        History of Tom Jones

, 1749. 1749. First Edition . FIELDING, Henry. The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling. London: Printed for A. Millar, 1749. Six volumes. 12mo, contemporary full calf gilt rebacked with original spines laid down, raised bands, red morocco spine labels. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $7800.First edition, first issue of Fielding's mock-heroic ""milestone in the development of the English novel"" (An English Library, 21), one of a first printing of only 2000 copies, in contemporary calf.""The book is generally regarded as Fielding's greatest, and as one of the first and most influential of English novels"" (Drabble, 988). The thoroughly entertaining story of how Tom, a kind-hearted, high-spirited young man, woos the morally exemplary Sophia and wins recognition from society is ""one of the best-plotted novels in English… A wealth of highly diversified episode is fitted together by the hand of a master craftsman into a perfectly organized whole"" (Baugh et al., 957-58). Prepublication demand for Tom Jones was so great that London booksellers immediately snapped up the first printing of 2000 copies; a second printing was completed before the official date of publication, February 28. First issue, with errata uncorrected in text; the table of contents, usually found with the errata leaf in Volume I, is here divided and bound separately into each volume, with errata leaf following the contents in Volume VI. The second printing was issued with the errors corrected, and therefore required no errata leaf. Other first-issue points: B9, B10 of Volume I are cancels; B4, B5 and N12 of Volume II are cancels; H8, H9, H10, M3 and Q11 of Volume III are cancels; N8 of Volume V is a cancel; B5 of Volume VI unsigned. Cross III:316-17. Rothschild 850. Grolier 100. Rosenbach 57:32. Lowndes, 797. Allibone, 593. Interior quite clean with only scattered light foxing; light marginal dampstaining to last few gatherings of Volume IV. Mild rubbing to spines, light age-wear to boards. A handsome, near-fine copy in contemporary binding.

Paris, Bidault, 1797. 4to (29 x 21.5 cm). With 8 folding engraved plates, showing how to determine the drop of a river, the contents of water, how to change currents, how to create different effects with different dyke constructions, etc. Contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine, in the style of Bradel & Derôme.

      - Brunet II, col. 1148; Ward 765; for Fabre: Poggendorf I, col. 711. Rare work on rivers, torrents and inland navigation. Jean Antoine Fabre (1749-1834), an hydraulic engineer, systematically describes the origin, conditions of rivers and torrents and offers advice on how to change their course and/or prevent them from causing damage. He argues against the deforestation of mountain slopes, gives advice on how to cultivate agricultural areas on hillsides and discusses different dyke constructions. In the third part of his work, he deals with inland navigation and gives a survey of the situation on several French rivers. He finally launches a plan to transform Paris into an harbour by forcing the current to deepen the rather shallow Seine, thereby enabling larger ships to reach the capital.A few leaves slightly foxed, pages 137-141 with lower margins/corner damaged; binding slightly rubbed, some repairs to spine. A well preserved copy with ample margins of this intriguing work on hydrology and navigation.

Nangazaki [Paris]: "Klnporzenkru, L'an du monde 59749" 1749. Two volumes in one, duodecimo, first title lightly stained and with an early ms attribution to 'Cahusac'; in old dark blue paper boards, red leather label. "Last edition" of this charming and rare book which had been suppressed by the authorities in Paris, and which announces itself as the 'final edition, less correct than previous versions.'De Cahusac (d. 1759) had a sustained career as a moderately successful playwright, and was a member of the Academy of science and literature in Berlin. Supposedly translated from the original Japanese ('la Litterature Japonnoise est d'ailleurs si fort ignorée en Europe...') this is a charming tale of the island of 'Fortunée'. Although the author claims to be translating (via Portuguese) from the original Japanese, he gives himself some elbow-room with announcements about his tendency to make the original more striking and original 'd'amuser ma Nation'. Although clearly a fairy-tale, the world which this work describes is blessed with all of the attributes of the idyllic utopia: perfect weather, ease of living, rational laws. It is dedicated to the exuberant young Grigri, and follows his many adventures.Ray Howgego has recently traced the publishing history of this book. He states that the work was written in 1744, published the following year in Paris and immediately burnt by the state police. Printing shifted to "Amsterdam" (as usual) for a second 1745 edition, meaning that this was actually the third - and indeed last - of 1749 (Ray Howgego, private correspondence). Very good copy.

D'Almeida....

Paris: Ballard Fils, 1749. 2 volumes. 182 pages with fold out frontispiece map and three additional folding engravings; 319 pages with seven folding engravings. half-titles in each (title pages improperly marked, first volume as second and vice versa). Duodecimo (6 1/2" x 3 1/2") bound in original publisher's full uniform contemporary French sponged calf, with gilt-tooled spines. First French edition after the 1748 English edition.Henry Ellis was a traveler, hydrographer, and colonial governor, returned from Italy in 1746, just in time to find an expedition to search for a north-west passage on the point of sailing. He appears to have been in easy circumstances; his name stands in the list of subscribers to the north-west expedition, and he had sufficient interest to get attached to it, nominally as agent for the committee, and really as hydrographer, surveyor, and mineralogist, the expedition, consisting of two vessels, the Dobbs galley of 180 and California of 150 tons, left Gravesend on 20 May 1746, joined the Hudson's Bay convoy in Hollesley Bay, and finally sailed from Yarmouth on the 31st. They parted from the convoy on 18 June, made Resolution Island on 8 July, and after a tedious passage through Hudson's Straits rounded Cape Digges on 8 August, and on the 11th 'made the land on the west side the Welcome, in latitude 64° N.' Bad weather drove them to the southward, and prevented their doing anything more that season. They wintered in Hayes River, in a creek about three miles above Fort York, where a quarrel with the agent of the Hudson's Bay Company gave an unwonted piquancy to the dark and weary days. They suffered much from scurvy, the prevalence of which Ellis attributes to their having got two kegs of brandy from Fort York for their Christmas merrymaking, and in a minor degree to the 'governor' not permitting the Indians to supply them with fresh provisions. On 29 May 1747 the ice broke up, and they were able to warp to the mouth of their creek; on 9 June they got down to Fort York. There they were allowed to get some provisions and stores, and on the 24th cleared the river and 'stood to the northward on the discovery'. On 1 July each of the two ships sent away her long-boat, but, owing apparently to some ill-feeling between the two captains, without any prearranged plan for working in concert. The consequence was that they separately went over the same ground, discovering, naming, and examining the several creeks and inlets on the west side of Hudson's Bay, the double examination perhaps compensating for the confusion arising from the double naming. Before the season closed in they had satisfied themselves that the only possible exit from Hudson's Bay on the west must be through the Welcome, and that very probably there was no way out except that on the east, by which they had come in. The result may not seem much; but as it served to put an end to the idea that the passage must lie through Hudson's Bay it was, at least, so much gain to accurate knowledge. After 21 August the weather broke, and they decided in council 'to bear away for England without further delay.' On the 29th they entered Hudson's Straits, passed Resolution Island on 9 September, and arrived at Yarmouth on 14 Octivwe. Ellis's share in the work of the expedition had really been very slender, but the reputation of it has been commonly assigned to him by reason of the narrative which he published the following year under the title A Voyage to Hudson's Bay, by the DobbsGalley and California in the years 1746 and 1747, for Discovering a North-West Passage (1748); a work which with many valuable observations on tides, on the vagaries of the compass, and on the customs of the Eskimos, a people then practically unknown, mingles a great deal of speculation on the certain existence of the passage, on magnetism, on fogs, on rust, and other matters, all more or less ingenious, but now known to be wildly erroneous. Such as it was, the book commended its author to the scientific workers of the day, and on 8 February 1748-9 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. Possibly in acknowledgment of his scientific labors, but more probably by some family interest, he was afterwards appointed successively governor of Georgia and of Nova Scotia, from which employment he retired about 1770. He seems to have spent his later years as a wanderer on the continent, was at Marseilles in 1775, and died at Naples on 21 January 1806.Condition:Some dark spot to spine else a very good copy.

This is not only a critique of the philosophy of Epicurus and Lucretius, but also a critique of ideas Sisters of Pierre Bayle and his disciples. The book played a role in the philosophical struggle. Interesting preface to Bougainville on philosophy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

Supposedly translated from the original Japanese ('la Litterature Japonnoise est d'ailleurs si fort ignorée en Europe... ') this is a charming tale of the island of 'Fortunée'.

[Palestine] A journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem; at Easter, A.D. 1697. The seventh edition; to which is now added an account of the author's journey to the banks of Euphrates at Beer, and to the country of Mesopotamia. With an index to the whole work. By Hen. Maundrell, M. A. late Fellow of Exeter Coll. and Chaplain to the Factory at Aleppo

Oxford printed at the Theatre, for W. Meadows Bookseller in Cornhill, London MDCCXLIX [1749] 8vo: [12],171,[1]pp, with engraved title vignette and 15 further copper-engraved plates (most folding, four of which signed by Hawksmoor). Modern half-calf over marbled boards, spine decorated in blind with five raised bands, red leather lettering piece gilt. A Fine copy, spine a tad faded, text very lightly toned but clean and bright, plates in vivid impressions. Gibson's Library, p. 194 (for an earlier edition). Fine Seventh Edition. At 3 pm, on Friday, 26 February 1697, Maundrell and fourteen others set off on an Easter pilgrimage from Aleppo, in Turkey (where Maundrell was chaplain to the Levant Company's factory) to Jerusalem, traveling across northern Syria to Latakia, down the coast to Acre, then to Jerusalem. According to the ODNB, "The Journey was partially intended to bring up to date George Sandys's account of 1610 (Relation of a journey begun an. dom. 1610. Foure bookes. Containing a description of the Turkish empire, of Aegypt, of the Holy Land, of the remote parts of Italy and llands adioyning). In fact, Maundrell's account is quite different from that of Sandys, and is a major work in its own right, giving detailed descriptions of the life and landscapes of Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, including the agricultural practices of the regions and places encountered, in addition to descriptions of places of religious significance. . . . Curzon, in his Visits to Monasteries in the Levant (1849), says that he 'was struck with the superiority of old Maundrell's narrative over all the others, for he tells us plainly and clearly what he saw' (Curzon, 168), and Howell, in a preface to a 1963 reprint of the Journey, says that 'it is taut, disciplined writing from which every wrinkle of ambiguity has been ironed away' (Howell, xi). Most of the nineteenth-century writers on the Holy Land, including Henry Robinson, Dean Stanley, Carl Ritter, and George Adam Smith, comment positively on Maundrell's account."
