Experiences sur L'Electricité, avec quelque Conjectures sur la Cause de ses Effets.

Geneve, Barrilot & Fils, 1748, 8, XII, 1 errata leaf, *129-*144, 145-304 pp 1 fold. table (after p. *136) 3 fold. plates with 15 figures, contemp. full calf, gilt-ruled covers, raised bands, gilt-stamped spine ExLibris Andreas Gedeon. Fine copy of the First Edition - THE FIRST USE OF ELECTROCHOCK THERAPY."Discovery of stimulation of muscles by electricity, and the first proof that paralysis could be successfully treated by electricity." Garrison & MortonThis work which gives an account of the first successful use of electricity to reverse paralysis. "After a succinct account of what is known about electricity, Jean Jallabert (1712-1768) describes his observations on how electricity can stimulate muscles and reverse paralysis. Together with Guiot, a leading surgeon, he examines a locksmith called Nogues, and finds him paralysed on the right side as a result of an accidental blow to the head fourteen years before. The man could not move his arm, he had no sensation in it and he had no control over the fingers in his hand. Holding a Leiden jar in his healthy hand and touching it with his paralysed hand, Nogues was treated with electric shocks for over an hour every day. Within two weeks an astonishing improvement in his condition was noted and three months later the patient had regained full use of his arm." Gedeon, Science and technology in Medicine, No. 19"This comprehensive work embraces the knowledge of the time on electric phenomena and theory it has been frequently quoted. The author considers electricity to be a subtile, elastic fluid." Wheeler Gift No 349 "He confirms the result obtained by Dr. Watson (A.D. 1745) that the electric fluid takes the shortest course by passing through the substance of a conducting wire instead of along its surface. By making his Leyden experiments with a jar in which the water is frozen, he shows that ice is a conductor of electricity. He improves upon Nollet's experiments, and demonstrates conclusively that plants which are electrified grow faster and have finer stems, etc., than those not electrified. He is the first to observe that a body pointed at one end and round at the other produces different appearances upon the same body, according as the pointed or the rounded end is presented to it. Of the two first issued in 1748, one was for the author himself, which is the genuine first... This famous and unfortunate expedition, consisting at the start of eight ships, was sent under the command of George Anson at the beginning of the war with Spain, to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America. Seven ships were lost around Cape Horn and on the coast of Chili and out of 900 men who left England on board more than 600 perished... The primary objective of the expedition was not attained, but by the capture of the Manila Galleon near China, Anson and the surviving members of his crew reached England much the richer... Walter's account of the voyage is a model of what such literature should be..." Cox I, p. 49. (Also, Sabin 1629).

Holzmann-B VII, 2833; Thieme & Becker XXV, p. 13 (Mörl) & II, p. 171 (Asam). Rare first edition of a magnificently illustrated history and description of Freising Cathedral, by Joseph Jacob von Heckenstaller (1748-1832) deacon of the Cathedral. The diocese of Freising, on the river Isar, near Munich, was founded by St. Corbinianus ca. 725/30. It remained an independent diocese until united with the diocese of Munich as the archbishopric of Munich/Freising in 1821. During the 1720s the interior of the cathedral was completely redecorated in the new rococo style by the brothers C.D. (1686-1739) and Egid Quirin Asam who were called to Freising by the bishop in 1723. The brothers Asam were responsible for the many characteristic stucco decorations as well as the five large ceiling frescos and numerous smaller frescos, all clearly visible on the large plate. A second edition in 1854 apparently had only one plate.A stamp on the title-page covered with paper, and a small tear in the largest folding plate repaired. (cgc) T.P.L. 207. Lane 1161. Sabin 22312. Hill p94. Ellis served as hydrographer, surveyor & mineralogist on the expedition under Capt. William Moor sent to discover the Northwest passage in 1746. The expedition proved decisively that no such passage from Hudson's Bay existed & contributed to a lapse of British interest in the subject until 1816. Ellis' work provided interesting & valuable information about the customs of the then relatively unknown Esquimaux, observations on the tides, and the `vagaries of the compass'. Plates depict natural history subjects, Eskimo costume & customs, and views. "Ellis went as proprietors' agent and scientific specialist with a two ship expedition commissioned to find the Northwest Passage, a hundred years after James' conclusion that such a search was pointless. Ellis's descriptions aroused James Isham to a hostile response, not published until much later (1949)". Waterston p9. .

Plan of the attack by Lord Nelson, on the combined fleet, October 21st 1805.London, printed by J. Smeeton for Robert Dodd, November 1805. Aquatint plan (26.5 x 36.5 cm) coloured by a contemporary hand on a broadsheet (66 x 44 cm), with letterpress text below. Framed (85 x 60 cm).

For Dodd: L. Macfarlane, “Dodd, Robert (1748-1815)”, in: ODNB (online ed.). Very well-preserved broadsheet commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805), including an attractive hand-coloured aquatint illustrating the commencement of the battle, where the British fleet led by Admiral Lord Nelson approaches the combines French and Spanish fleets in two columns to break the enemy formation into three. The broadsheet was published a month after the event and besides the aquatint plan, includes Vice-Admiral Collingwood's letters to the Admiralty describing the successful battle and the unfortunate death of Nelson, and a list of the ships in both fleets. Nelson successfully broke with military tradition by trusting his men to judge their situation and make tactical decisions, famously signalling as his instructions “England expects every man to do his duty”."From about 1783 Dodd himself engraved and published over 100 aquatints of his work. Of interest are his … sets of engravings of the battles of the Nile … and Trafalgar. In his engravings as in his paintings his strength lies in the depiction of water and in accuracy of the details of ships' rigging, masts, and sails in different conditions. … His prolific work is significant as a historical record, along with that of several contemporary marine painters working on the same subjects" (ODNB).In very good condition, with only an old, clean fold.

2 volumes, quarto (245 x 186 mm). Contemporary half roan, twin tan and beige paper labels lettered in gilt, smooth spines ruled in gilt, boards speckled black, edges red. Woodcut tail-pieces. Bound without the errata as often. Modern red morocco book label to rear free endpapers; contemporary or early ownership signature to half-title of Volume 1. Slight surface loss to boards, Volume 1 with small loss to fore margin of sig. Zz4, tiny hole to top margin of sig. Aa3, and sporadic faint dampstaining, ghosting from book label to top corners of last 3 or 4 leaves in both volumes. A very good copy. First edition of this classic in social science which influenced the formation of the United States Constitution and was the ideological basis of the French Revolution. "The most distinctive aspect of this immense syllabus is its moderation: a quality not designed to achieve official approval in 1748. It is an always original survey which is neither doctrinaire, visionary, eccentric, nor over-systematic" (PMM). L'Esprit des loix was a huge influence both on English law, especially as mediated by William Blackstone, and on those who framed the American Constitution. Blackstone's Commentaries, Hamilton's Federalist Papers and Tocqueville's Democracy in America are all thoroughly imbued with Montesquieu's theories. In particular, Montesquieu is credited with the idea that the powers of government should be separated and balanced in order to guarantee the freedom of the individual, a key concept in the creation of the US Constitution.

à Paris: Chez Antoine de Sommaville|& Augustin Courbe|& Toussaint Quinet, 1748. Fine. Chez Antoine de Sommaville & Augustin Courbe & Toussaint Quinet, à Paris 1748, in-12 (9,5x16cm), (16) 426pp. et (2) 470pp. (2) et (16) 636pp. et 679pp. (1) et (14) 554pp. (5) et 574pp. (1) et (16) 645pp. et (6) 648pp. 14 (2bc.) 632pp. (2) 4 (2bc.) 633-1213p., 10 volumes reliés. - New complete edition of the novel having appeared from 1642 to 1645; illustrated with 5 headpieces for five games in 10 volumes. Binding in full mottled brown sheepskin. Back with nerves decorated. As part beige morocco and volume number of brown sheepskin.

2011, pp.47-67, 413-416. It is believed that the first edition was printed in 500 t0 1500 copies, nobody really knows; part of the edition seems to have been seized by customs or lost in transport; in particular a large number of copies sent to England seem to have disappeared. Montesquieu was horrified by the errors he found which explains why no less than four kinds of errata were printed from January 1749 - three of which were destined for the first edition and inserted in the last copies that had been unsold and uncirculated by that time.FIRST EDITION of Montesquieu's [1689-1755] great L'esprit des loix in which he argued that the best government would be one in which power was balanced among three groups of officials. He thought England - which divided power between the king (who enforced laws), Parliament (which made laws), and the judges of the English courts (who interpreted laws) - was a good model of this. Montesquieu called the idea of dividing government power into three branches the \"separation of powers.\" He thought it most important to create separate branches of government with equal but different powers. That way, the government would avoid placing too much power with one individual or group of individuals. He wrote, \"When the [law making] and [law enforcement] powers are united in the same person... there can be no liberty.\" According to Montesquieu, each branch of government could limit the power of the other two branches. Therefore, no branch of the government could threaten the freedom of the people. His ideas about separation of powers became the basis for the United States Constitution.John Maynard Keynes in the manuscript preface to his French edition of The General Theory described Montesquieu as the greatest French economist: "Montesquieu was the real French equivalent of Adam Smith. The greatest of your economists, head and shoulders above the Physiocrats in penetration, clear-headedness and good sense".
