        Pair of Spanish ships.

London 1748 - Pair of copper engraved plates (each 58 x 73.5 cm), uncoloured, mounted on cardboard. Published as part of a larger series that celebrated British naval victories. These depict the capture of the famous Spanish vessel the "Glorioso". Very scarce. Richard Short (?-1702) was a naval officer and topographical draughtsman in the GB Royal Navy. Nothing is known of his naval career except the vessels in which he served: Baltimore (a sloop), Peregrine (a sloop built in 1749), Mermaid (a frigate, which he appears to have left before she sailed for Nova Scotia in 1754), Gibraltar (a frigate), and four ships of the line, Leopard (built in 1756), Prince of Orange, Dublin (which returned from the West Indies in 1763), and Neptune. After this service at sea he was appointed to the Chatham dockyard, England. In the pre-photography era drawing lessons formed a regular part of the training of officers. Short is known to be one of the first English military artists to record Canadian views during the period when British forces were stationed in Canada, which were engraved by various hands after his sketches. He is also known for views of naval engagements, engraved as a series by Caroline Watson and published by Boydell in London. J. Mynde (spelled here without the 'e') was a British engraver, active from 1740 to 1770. He worked mainly for booksellers producing plates of landscapes, portraits and anatomical subjects which he is best known for. He's portraits of Roger Earl of Orrery and William Harris, Doctor in Divinity rank as his principal.

A True Account of the Behaviour and Conduct of Archibal Stewart, Esq; Late Lord Provost of Edinburgh.

London: printed for M. Cooper,, 1748. In a Letter to a Friend. Octavo (177 x 115 mm), pp. [2], [iv], 3-51, [1]. Recent calf-backed boards. With contemporary manuscript corrections in ink to 4 pages. Fore- and lower edges unevenly trimmed, occasional light spotting; a very good copy. First edition, Todd's state (b), of one of Hume's rarest works, with an additional half-title not called for. The letter is dated 20 October 1747, and the postscript 4 November 1747. Stewart was a friend of Hume's and had supported his candidature for the Chair of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh in 1744. He was charged with neglect of duty during the Jacobite rising of 1745 and acquitted in November 1747. Hume wrote this letter in Stewart's defence, and it is "an example of Hume at his best in historical narrative. Straightforward, urbane, and witty, it is also accurate, learned, and philosophical, and displays a solid understanding of the law" (Mossner, Life of Hume, pp. 182-6). Hume's performance prompted Stewart to give him some fine burgundy, of which Hume is recorded as saying, "The gift ruined me; I was obliged to give so many dinners in honour of the wine".

A voyage round the world, in the years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV . Compiled from papers and other materials of the Right Honourable George Lord Anson, and published under his direction by Richard Walter, M.A. Chaplain of His Majesty's Ship the Centurion, in that expedition.

London T. Osborne 1748 - First edition. 4to.[20], 417, [1] pp., 42 copper-plates (mostly folding), complete with the 12-page subscriber list, and the "directions to binder", contemporary calf gilt, rebacked to style, red morocco label, edges repaired, endpapers renewed, occasional light spotting and offsetting, a few plates cropped close, a very good example. A landmark of eighteenth century English circumnavigation. The expedition was made in order to cut off Spanish supplies of wealth from South America after the outbreak of war between Britain and Spain in 1739. Anson succeeded in this by taking a number of prize ships off the Philippines, but at a heavy cost, losing six ships wrecked off the coast of South America or in rounding Cape Horn. Anson's voyage laid the groundwork for the British voyages of exploration in the Pacific of the later half of the eighteenth century and Richard Walter produced a masterpiece of descriptive travel that became the most popular book of maritime adventure of the time.         Observaciones astronomicas, y phisicas hechas de orden de S.Mag, en los Reynos del Perù...de las quales se deduce la figura, y magnitud de la tierra, y se aplica a la navegacion

First edition. 4to (264x190mm). pp. [18], 396, [14, index]. 9 folding plates. Engraved frontispiece. Title page in red and black. Contemporary calf with spine lavishly decorated in gilt. Contrasting lettering piece with title in gilt. Some scuffing to the boards and small area at head and foot of spine. Marbled endpapers, all edges stained red. Apart from wormholes running from the ffep to K2 (pp77/78) the contents are in very good, fresh, clean condition. The worming is to the head of the pages affecting the top margin and, in places, small parts of the text but it does not affect legibility. Despite these flaws, this is a nice copy, in an attractive contemporary Spanish binding, of a rare and important book which describes the process of establishing that the earth is not a perfect sphere. In 1734, the French Academy of Sciences organised a mission to determine the exact shape and magnitude of the Earth in order to establish whether or not it is a perfect sphere. That we know it is not is because of the work of scientists such as Juan and books such as this. It was decided to measure two arcs of one-degree meridian, one at the pole and the other on the Equator, and two expeditions, to Lapland and Peru, were organized. Jorge Juan was asked by King Philip V of Spain to join this Peruvian expedition and he was accompanied by, among many others, Antonio de Ulloa. They left Cadiz on 26 May 1735 and travelled to Quito in present-day Ecuador. They conducted numerous physical and astronomical observations, and cartographic surveys. This book, mostly dealing with geodesic and nautical surveying, details the work of triangulation and astronomical calculation conducted by the expedition and describes the instruments used and their management. Juan also successfully measured the heights of the mountains of the Andes using a barometer. This single volume scientific work was published in the same year as, although separately from, the four volume narrative account of the expedition entitled Relacion historica del viage a la America Meridional. Juan Jorge was a fascinating and brilliant man. Born in 1713, he was orphaned young and educated by the Jesuits. As a boy, he entered the Order of the Knights of Malta, where he took Holy Orders at the age of twelve and became a Knight at fifteen. At sixteen, he returned to Spain and entered the Royal Company of Marine Guards, the Spanish military school for naval officers. He studied technical and scientific subjects such as geometry, trigonometry, astronomy, navigation, hydrography, and cartography. He was clearly an outstanding student, being nicknamed Euclid by his colleagues. He finished his studies at the academy in 1734 before leaving for South America. On his return, Juan went to England, essentially as a spy using the name Mr Josues, to study British naval construction methods. He sent back reports written in code. He was not terribly impressed with British ship construction so created his own system which was formally adopted by the Spanish navy in 1752. In 1757, he founded the Royal Astronomical Observatory of Madrid. He died in 1773.

A true copy of a survey of the Lordship and Manor of Hilborrow made in the year 1627.

Revised and updated 1748 - Manuscript in ink on 54 leaves, folio, each leaf 37.5 x 24 cms., ruled in red throughout, bound in the original card covers annotated on upper cover in an early 19th century hand ('To be handed over to Mr. Hardy'), the fore-edge of covers a little frayed otherwise in excellent state of preservation. An 18th century copy of this early 17th century terrier, updated in 1748, showing the names of the then current land and property owners. Excluding those who had various rights on the 'heath and warren', the 1627 record shows no fewer than 1221 tenants and landowners, a number that was much reduced by 1748. Hilborough is a modest Norfolk village, a little over 5 miles from Swaffam and 25 miles south-west of Norwich. When this 1748 revision was made, the Rector was an ancestor of Admiral Nelson, indeed, the family of Horatio Nelson, his grandfather, father, uncle-by-marriage and his brother were all Rectors of All Saints' Church, Hilborough. As a young boy, Nelson stayed with his uncle and grandmother in Hilborough. After the battle of the Nile, Nelson was created Baron Nelson of the Nile and Hilborough. This 1748 survey shows that the majority of the land in the parish now belonged to a mere five owners: Edward Bunting, John Harvey, Thomas Snelling jun., William Took and Henry Glen. The original 1627 terrier, the Survey or Field Book of the town of Hilborough, William Hayward surveyor> is held by the Norfolk Records Office in Norwich [HIL 2/41 882 x 6].

Experiences sur L'Electricité, avec quelque Conjectures sur la Cause de ses Effets.

Fine copy of the First Edition - THE FIRST USE OF ELECTROCHOCK THERAPY."Discovery of stimulation of muscles by electricity, and the first proof that paralysis could be successfully treated by electricity." Garrison & MortonThis work which gives an account of the first successful use of electricity to reverse paralysis. "After a succinct account of what is known about electricity, Jean Jallabert (1712-1768) describes his observations on how electricity can stimulate muscles and reverse paralysis. Together with Guiot, a leading surgeon, he examines a locksmith called Nogues, and finds him paralysed on the right side as a result of an accidental blow to the head fourteen years before. The man could not move his arm, he had no sensation in it and he had no control over the fingers in his hand. Holding a Leiden jar in his healthy hand and touching it with his paralysed hand, Nogues was treated with electric shocks for over an hour every day. Within two weeks an astonishing improvement in his condition was noted and three months later the patient had regained full use of his arm." Gedeon, Science and technology in Medicine, No. 19"This comprehensive work embraces the knowledge of the time on electric phenomena and theory it has been frequently quoted. The author considers electricity to be a subtile, elastic fluid." Wheeler Gift No 349 "He confirms the result obtained by Dr. Watson (A.D. 1745) that the electric fluid takes the shortest course by passing through the substance of a conducting wire instead of along its surface. By making his Leyden experiments with a jar in which the water is frozen, he shows that ice is a conductor of electricity. He improves upon Nollet's experiments, and demonstrates conclusively that plants which are electrified grow faster and have finer stems, etc., than those not electrified. He is the first to observe that a body pointed at one end and round at the other produces different appearances upon the same body, according as the pointed or the rounded end is presented to it. Overall, a very good copy. "Of this important work there were many subsequent editions and translations. Four came out the same year as the original... Of the two first issued in 1748, one was for the author himself, which is the genuine first... This famous and unfortunate expedition, consisting at the start of eight ships, was sent under the command of George Anson at the beginning of the war with Spain, to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America. Seven ships were lost around Cape Horn and on the coast of Chili and out of 900 men who left England on board more than 600 perished... The primary objective of the expedition was not attained, but by the capture of the Manila Galleon near China, Anson and the surviving members of his crew reached England much the richer... Walter's account of the voyage is a model of what such literature should be..." Cox I, p. 49. (Also, Sabin 1629).

VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD IN THE YEARS MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV.

1748 - LARGE-PAPER SUBSCRIBER'S COPY PRINTED ON ROYAL PAPER PRINTED FOR THE AUTHOR ANSON, George; Richard Walter, compiler. A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD IN THE YEARS MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. By George Anson, Esq; Commander in Chief of a Squadron of His Majesty's Ships, sent upon an Expedition to the South-Seas. Compiled from Papers and other Materials of the Right Honourable George Lord Anson, and published under his Direction, by Richard Walter, M. A., Chaplain if His Majesty's Ship the Centurian in that expedition. Illustrated with forty-two copperplates. London: Printed for the Author, by John and Paul Knapton, in Ludgate-Street, 1748. First edition, first issue: a large-paper subscriber's copy printed on Royal Paper (leaf size: 28.5 x 22.5 cm). 42 engraved plates of illustrations, maps, plans, and charts; all but one are folding. [34], 417, [3] pp., with a list of subscribers bound in near the front and directions to the binder at the end. Quarto: A4 a4 b1 c-d4 B-3G4 [ ]2. The final two leaves are unsigned. Page 319 is misnumbered 219. Plates are clean but for a few that are foxed. Some scattered, light foxing in text, though a bit heavier in one gathering (E). Full leather binding, worn but sound: contemporary calf boards that have been rebacked, long ago, showing discoloration along joints and some edges of boards. Plain endpapers. All edges marbled. Overall, a very good copy. "Of this important work there were many subsequent editions and translations. Four came out the same year as the original. Of the two first issued in 1748, one was for the author himself, which is the genuine first. This famous and unfortunate expedition, consisting at the start of eight ships, was sent under the command of George Anson at the beginning of the war with Spain, to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America. Seven ships were lost around Cape Horn and on the coast of Chili and out of 900 men who left England on board more than 600 perished. The primary objective of the expedition was not attained, but by the capture of the Manila Galleon near China, Anson and the surviving members of his crew reached England much the richer. Walter's account of the voyage is a model of what such literature should be." Cox I, p. 49. (Also, Sabin 1629).

Holzmann-B VII, 2833; Thieme & Becker XXV, p. 13 (Mörl) & II, p. 171 (Asam). Rare first edition of a magnificently illustrated history and description of Freising Cathedral, by Joseph Jacob von Heckenstaller (1748-1832) deacon of the Cathedral. The diocese of Freising, on the river Isar, near Munich, was founded by St. Corbinianus ca. 725/30. It remained an independent diocese until united with the diocese of Munich as the archbishopric of Munich/Freising in 1821. During the 1720s the interior of the cathedral was completely redecorated in the new rococo style by the brothers C.D. (1686-1739) and Egid Quirin Asam who were called to Freising by the bishop in 1723. The brothers Asam were responsible for the many characteristic stucco decorations as well as the five large ceiling frescos and numerous smaller frescos, all clearly visible on the large plate. A second edition in 1854 apparently had only one plate.A stamp on the title-page covered with paper, and a small tear in the largest folding plate repaired. The spine is frayed, with some loss at the head and foot. With very large margins and in very good condition.

London. Printed for H. Whitridge. 1748.. 1st Edition. (cgc) T.P.L. 207. Lane 1161. Sabin 22312. Hill p94. Ellis served as hydrographer, surveyor & mineralogist on the expedition under Capt. William Moor sent to discover the Northwest passage in 1746. The expedition proved decisively that no such passage from Hudson's Bay existed & contributed to a lapse of British interest in the subject until 1816. Ellis' work provided interesting & valuable information about the customs of the then relatively unknown Esquimaux, observations on the tides, and the `vagaries of the compass'. Plates depict natural history subjects, Eskimo costume & customs, and views. "Ellis went as proprietors' agent and scientific specialist with a two ship expedition commissioned to find the Northwest Passage, a hundred years after James' conclusion that such a search was pointless. Ellis's descriptions aroused James Isham to a hostile response, not published until much later (1949)". Waterston p9. .
