Les Principales Aventures de L'Incomparable Chevalier Errant Don Quichotte de la Manche.

Paris Jacques-François Chereau (c. 1747) - Large folio. (1), (25)ff., plates. A reissue or reimpression published after the artist, Charles-Antoine Coypel, was named "Premier Peintre du Roi" in 1747; this series of twenty-five engravings was first presented as a deluxe portfolio in Paris, in 1724. The engravings were done after a series of paintings illustrating scenes from Don Quixote that Coypel had designed for a popular set of tapestries, which were woven continuously between 1714 and 1794. Coypel supervised the portfolio's production, and, according to the title page, the engravings were done by "les plus habiles artistes en ce genre." These artists included L. Surugue, F. Joullain, C. N. Cochin, and eight other engravers, who sign the plates. Coypel's depictions of scenes from Don Quixote differed significantly from previous illustrations of Cervantes's classic in that they were less focused on humor, and were more courtly and sophisticated, taking into account the eighteenth-century French taste for the Fête Galante and romanticized depictions of aristocrats in baroque rural settings. The scenery of these illustrations is a much lusher Versailles, rather than arid La Mancha. In addition, Coypel's illustrations were never intended to accompany a text, but instead were meant to be admired as decorative pieces. Bound in nineteenth-century half dark blue morocco over marbled boards. The spine bears a crimson lettering piece with gilt lettering. Wear to corners and head and foot of spine, front hinge starting, covers rubbed in spots, some faint marginal foxing, else a very good copy. (Ashbee 22, p. 12). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        La Cause Badine

chez Gersaint et chez Surugue, Paris 1747 - A charming arabesque depicting a group of children playfully engaged in an argument, from Moyreau's "Oeuvres Des Estampes Gravées d'après Les Tableaux & Desseins de feu Antoine Watteau." Born in Valenciennes in 1684, the versatile artist Jean-Antoine Watteau was primarily renowned for his fête galante paintings depicting aristocratic men and women amorously conversing in the outdoors. Following a brief apprenticeship to the local painter Jacques-Albert Gérin, Watteau moved to Paris in 1702 where he later studied with Claude Gillot, scene painter for the comédie italienne , who introduced him to the commedia dell'arte , which later became a recurrent theme in his work. In 1708, he began to work with the decorator Claude Audran, under whose tutelage he produced several innovative ornamental decorations that were for porcelain, furniture, and textiles. Watteau was also a prolific draughtsman and his varied and substantial oeuvre includes military, genre, religious, mythological, and theatrical scenes as well as tapestry cartoons. After Watteau's death in 1721, his friend Jean de Jullienne commissioned a comprehensive body of engravings after the artist's drawings and paintings, which further solidified his reputation as one of the most influential and prominent artists of the Rococo period. Cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs , vol 14, p. 473-6; cf. Dacier & Vuaflart Jean de Jullienne et Les Graveurs de Watteau au XVIIIeime Siècle , 119. Engraving, printed on laid paper. Very good condition with the exception of some repair in the bottom right hand corner of sheet. Image size: 13 7/8 x 19 inches.

DIE BITTRE SUSE ODER DAS GESANG DER EINSAMEN TURTEL TAUBE, DER CHRISTLICHEN KIRCHEN HIER AUF ERDEN.[manuscript title].

Ephrata. 1747. - [264]pp. plus 7pp. printed register. Small quarto. Contemporary three- quarter calf and marbled boards. Spine heavily worn, split in center. Later 19th- century ownership inscription on front fly leaf. Slight wear and foxing to some leaves, and some ink burn, resulting in splits to some leaves. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. A unique and spectacular manuscript hymnbook created by the religious community at Ephrata, Pennsylvania, founded by Johann Conrad Beissel. This manuscript is from the period when the community was at its zenith, and is an outstanding example of the Frakturschriften for which the Ephrata Cloister is known. It contains over 250 pages of manuscript music, some of it likely original compositions. The printed register at the end contains 375 hymn listings, and an additional fifteen pieces of music precede the main body of the work. Johann Conrad Beissel (1692-1768) was born in Germany and orphaned at an early age. A charismatic and engaging personality, he tried on several religious movements, and eventually emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1720 after being banished from his homeland for radical religious beliefs. Beissel spent part of the 1720s with the Dunkards in Germantown and Lancaster County before his controversial beliefs about celibacy and Sabbath-keeping caused a rift with his fellow congregants. He then established himself as a hermit on the banks of the Cocalico River, where he was eventually joined by other like-minded individuals who wished to follow his teachings, and so founded the Ephrata Cloister in 1732. "What began as a hermitage for a small group of devoted individuals grew into a thriving community of nearly 80 celibate members supported by an estimated 200 family members from the region at its zenith in the mid-18th century. During that period much of the activity surrounded the charismatic founder and leader, Conrad Beissel. His theology, a hybrid of pietism and mysticism, encouraged celibacy, Sabbath worship, Anabaptism, and the ascetic life, yet provided room for families, limited industry, and creative expression" - Ephrata website. "Both within and without Ephrata, Beissel aroused controversy. His opposition to the institution of marriage early divided his congregation, as did his refusal to tolerate the community's money-making industries. His adoption of the Jewish sabbath and work on Sunday violated provincial laws and aroused the opposition of civil officials. That women left their husbands and homes to be with Beissel produced their husbands' ever-lasting hostility and even provoked one to attack Beissel physically. Beissel's willingness to permit women to spend nights in his cabin and his initial housing of men and women in the same building led to rumors of sexual promiscuity that prompted a neighbor to try to set fire to the cloister" - ANB. The community became known for its self-composed a cappella music, Germanic calligraphy known as Frakturschriften, and the complete publishing center which included a paper mill, printing office, and book bindery. Printing at Ephrata began in 1745, the third geographical location of printing in Pennsylvania. In fact, the largest book printed in America before 1800, numbering more than 1,500 pages, was published at the Ephrata printing shop in 1748. The first printed hymnbook of the cloister was called the "Turtle-Taube (Turtle Dove)," and contained more than 400 of the community's hymns, most of which Beissel had written. It was issued in 1747, the same year as this manuscript. In addition to the press, the Cloister also had a scriptorium which produced beautiful manuscript hymnals and other works. Beissel composed many original hymns for the community, which then produced manuscript volumes containing both the words and, separately, the music. He is said to have composed more than 4,000 lines of poetry, almost all of it religious, some of it set to music also of his composition. "For the community's worship, he

He is said to have composed more than 4,000 lines of poetry, almost all of it religious, some of it set to music also of his composition. "For the community's worship, he developed distinctive types of choral harmony and antiphonal singing, and he frequently required the members to sing in this style on late night walks around Ephrata" - ANB. Manuscript production at Ephrata was used as a form not only of book production, but also as a meditation and spiritual act. Beissel established a monastic style of living for the Cloister in 1735, three years after its founding, and the earliest output of the scriptorium dates to this time. Most of the fine manuscript work was likely done by the Sisters (the Cloister was segregated by gender), while the Brothers maintained the printing press. The scriptorium flourished during the 1740s and 1750s, declining near the end of that decade. The present manuscript was produced while the scriptorium was at the pinnacle of its output and handiwork. This volume, with its elaborate fraktur titlepage, was likely a presentation copy rather than a standard, everyday hymnbook. The Ephrata community produced virtually the only original hymn texts and tunes during the colonial era. It was meant to be used with the printed words from the 1747 edition of DAS GESANG DER EINSAMEN UND VERLASSENEN TURTEL-TAUBE.... A bearded face has been drawn in each of the two upper corners of the fraktur, a highly interesting and unusual feature of the work. It is inscribed on the front fly leaf with a later ownership inscription which reads, "Abm. Burger's Book / January 29, 1830," which is followed by a gift inscription: "A Present of a Music Book from / Abm. Burger / to / Elder Lucius Crandal / Plainfield / Essex County / N.J. / December 17th 1854." These lines were probably written by Abraham Berger (1795-1856), a member of the Snow Hill Congregation in Quincy, Pennsylvania, an offshoot of the Ephrata community located about ninety miles to the southwest. When Ephrata was in its decline in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Snow Hill was in its prime, and as a result, many of the books and manuscripts were transferred from Ephrata to Snow Hill. This would explain how and why Berger may have acquired the volume. The gift recipient, Lucius Crandall (1810-76), was an elder and minister in the Seventh Day Baptist Church, first at Plainfield, New Jersey, and later at congregations in Rhode Island and New York. The Ephrata Cloister congregation, following its incorporation in 1814, became known as the Seventh Day Baptists of Ephrata, also referred to as the German Seventh Day Baptists. While Ephrata had no official ties or affiliation to the Seventh Day Baptist Church with which Crandall was affiliated, the two denominations formed a close relationship. This was true to the extent that in the later 19th century, Crandall's denomination included the annual reports of the Ephrata and Snow Hill congregations in their own annual reports. Ministers and members would travel from Crandall's Seventh Day Baptist Church to the Cloisters at Ephrata for feast days and baptisms, etc., providing a link between the two men. The Winterthur Library and Museum in Delaware has a significant collection of these hymnals, as noted by Kari Main in her excellent 1997 article on the subject (she compares eight hymnals). Columbia University has half a dozen manuscript hymnals, as well, and further collections can be found at the Ephrata Cloister, The Free Library of Philadelphia, the Library of Congress, and the Hershey Museum. Many of these derive from the great Samuel Pennypacker collection, dispersed at auction in 1908. Such manuscript works are incredibly rare on the market today, and the present copy is an especially fine example of these remarkable manuscripts. Kari M.         La Chaumiere. Gravé d'Après le Tableau Original de Ppe. Wouvermens de même grandeur Qui est dans la Gallerie de Son Ex. Mgneur. Le Comte de Brühl Premier Ministre de S.M. le Roy de Pologne Electeur de Saxe

Moyreau, Paris 1747 - A fine composition, showing rural life in the Flemish low countries: a thatched cottage is seen to the right, in the foreground two men prepare a couple of pack-horses. One man talks to a women seated, who spines wool using a hand spindle. A traveller passes on a laden ass. In the doorway of the house a women plays with a young child. The title notes that the original painting was the same size as the engraving. 'Dutch painter and draughtsman. [Philips Wouwerman]. was the eldest son of the painter Paulus [Pauwels] Joostens Wouwerman of Alkmaar (d. 28 Sept 1642), whose two other sons, Pieter Wouwerman and Johannes Wouwerman, also became painters. Philips probably received his first painting lessons from his father, none of whose work has been identified. According to Cornelis de Bie, Wouwerman was next apprenticed to Frans Hals, although no trace of Hals's influence is discernible in Wouwerman's work. Wouwerman is also reputed to have spent several weeks in 1638 or 1639 working in Hamburg in the studio of the German history painter Evert Decker (d. 1647). While in Hamburg, he married Annetje Pietersz. van Broeckhof. On 4 September 1640 Wouwerman joined the Guild of St Luke in Haarlem, in which in 1646 he held the office of vinder (agent or finder). Given the many southern elements in his landscapes, it has repeatedly been suggested that Wouwerman must have travelled to France or Italy, but there is no documentary evidence that he left his native Haarlem for more than short periods. During his lifetime he must have attained a certain degree of prosperity, as demonstrated by the relatively large sums inherited by each of his seven children after his wife's death in 1670. Engraving, coloured by hand, by J. Moyreau.

Reflexions sur la Cause generale des Vents. Piéce qui a remporté le Prix proposé par l'Académie Royale des Sciences de Berlin, pour l'Année 1746

Fine engraved vignette on title; one engraved headpiece with a port. of Frederick the Great, to whom the book is dedicated; & two folding engraved plates. 4 p.l., 194 pp.; 138 pp. 4to, cont. vellum over boards (one corner a little jammed), spine gilt. Paris: David l'aîné, 1747 [but 1746]. First edition of this important work. "In 1747 d'Alembert published two more important works, one of which, the Réflexions sur la cause générale des vents, won a prize from the Prussian Academy. In it appeared the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics. Euler later perfected the techniques of using these equations...As a work on atmospheric tides it was successful, and Lagrange continued to praise d'Alembert's efforts many years later."-D.S.B., I, p. 113. This and the Berlin edition of the same year are both variously claimed as the true first edition and it is perhaps logical to suppose that a prize-winning essay should first appear under the imprint of the prize giver. However, the imprimatur of the French Académie was granted on 6th September 1746 and the book was on sale in November of that year (see d'Alembert's letter of 6th January 1747 to Euler). Fine copy of a very rare edition. Contemporary signature of "Castiglioni" on title. From the library of Haskell F. Norman with bookplate. ❧ See Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 8 for the Berlin edition. .

Copper Medal in commemoration of his 1740-1744 Circumnavigation and 1747 defeat of the French at Cap Finisterre

London: Thomas Pingo, 1747. Copper medal, 43.3 mm., with Anson crowned by Victory at right, on the reverse Victory on hippocamp, the names of Anson's officers around; corrected CAMPBEL variety, remnants of 'H' faintly visible, about uncirculated, some mint color remaining, slight abrasions on the obverse. Anson's circumnavigation and defeat of the French. An excellent copper medal, commemorating Lord Anson's circumnavigation of the Globe and his 1747 defeat of the French at Cap Finisterre off the coast off Spain. George Anson was one of the most successful British naval commanders of the eighteenth-century, famous for his notoriously difficult circumnavigation of the globe from 1740-1744 as commander of the Centurion. In 1739 he had been given command of a Pacific squadron to raid Spanish possessions, a period at sea which saw him lose five of his six ships and literally most of his crew, but also return with a staggering £400,000 in bounty after his capture of the Manila treasure galleon. 'After the fleet's failure off Toulon in February the navy stood in need of a popular triumph, and the capture of a treasure galleon was in the public mind the next best thing to a fleet victory. Day after day the newspapers carried reports of the homecoming: the procession from Portsmouth to London, with thirty-two wagons laden with treasure; the feting of Anson and his men; details of the prize money and the dispute over its allocation…' (Williams, p. 229). Anson went on to a long career and, as this medal also commemorates, was instrumental in the French defeat at Finisterre off the Spanish coast on 3 May 1747, where Anson's thirteen ships of the line defeated the French admiral De la Jonquiere's smaller fleet in just three hours with most of the French men-of-war taken. This medal was struck for both of Anson's great achievements, and was commissioned from Thomas Pingo (1692-1776), then assistant engraver at the Royal Mint. On the obverse is a bust of the admiral crowned with a laurel by Victory and the caption 'Vict. Mai III MDCCXLVII'. The reverse bears the legend 'Circumnavigation' and the names of other officers on the famous journey, themselves famous names in the British navy: Keppel, Saumarez, Saunders, Brett, Dennis, and Campbel. When the medal was originally issued the name of the junior officer Campbel was mis-engraved "Camphel". The present medal is an example of the issue known as the corrected "Campbel" variety, with only remnants of the mis-engraved 'H'. Eimer suggests that the medal was commissioned by Thomas Anson, George's brother and himself a collector of medals. In this light, it has plausibly been argued that the long-accepted date of production of 1747 is in fact far too early, and that it was not until 1768, six years after Anson's death, that this medal was commissioned and struck.

A Genuine and Exact Plan of the Fortifications of Bergen-op-zoom with the Forts Moermont, Pinsen, and Rover, and ye Line of Steenberge. Also of The French Trenches and Attacks during ye Present Siege. Being an exact copy of One lately sent from the Hague.

1747 - London: Thomas Bowles & John Bowles, c.1747. 290 x 415mm. Some restoration. A scarce broadsheet old battle plan of the strategic Dutch border fortress of Bergen op Zoom under seige by the French in 1747, during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8, part of a larger conflict that included England's 'War of Jenkins' Ear' with Spain & 'King George's War' with the French in North America). The garrison inside included Britrish troops, including the 25th & 64th Foot (Loudon's Highlanders). This battle plan concentrates on the fortifications, which, built by Menno van Coehoorn at the beginning of the C17th, were believed to be impregnable. However, after seventy days, the French artillery breached the walls and their troops sacked the town. Loudon's Highlanders made a stand, fighting through the streets, but lost two-thirds of their number. It was reported that several thousand civilians were killed, which outraged European opinion. Following the defeat the Dutch were militarily exhausted, and the British joined negotiations at the Congress of Breda, leading to a treaty in 1748.

Copper Medal in commemoration of his 1740-1744 Circumnavigation and 1747 defeat of the French at Cap Finisterre

Thomas Pingo, London 1747 - Copper medal, 43.3 mm., with Anson crowned by Victory at right, on the reverse Victory on hippocamp, the names of Anson's officers around; corrected CAMPBEL variety, remnants of 'H' faintly visible, about uncirculated, some mint color remaining, slight abrasions on the obverse. Day after day the newspapers carried reports of the homecoming: the procession from Portsmouth to London, with thirty-two wagons laden with treasure; the feting of Anson and his men; details of the prize money and the dispute over its allocation?' (Williams, p.
