(Amsterdam ?), 1746. 4to. Wille. I værket redegøres for over 40 danske adelsslægter, Friis, Skeel, Rantzau, Thott m.v., og særligt må fremhæves afsnittet om Tycho Brahe, der ud over hans stukne portræt, indeholder kortet over Hven, prospekt af Uranienborg m.v.

One title-page cut close otherwise a nice clean and well-preserved copy with wide margin. Small stamps on title-pages. * A rare complete set of the most important and finest entomological German publication of the 18th century. The work was published by Rösel and his son-in-law Kleemann, both lived in Bavaria, in Nürnberg, working as artists, and both were ardent students of local natural history. "Rösel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After living in Copenhagen from 1726 to 1728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there, besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation, and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleemann tells us. Rösel also made the engravings of his drawings and, until his death in 1757, his 'loving and diligent spouse' contributed fine colouring to the prints" [Nissen. Bestiaries]. The handcoloured engraved frontispieces are of a great beauty and the plates, especially of his favourite group, butterflies and moths, usually show a complete life history, with eggs, larva, pupa and perfect insect. There was no title page published for the first issue of the supplement by Kleemann; a second issue of the supplement was published in 1792 which does have a printed title as well as 4 more plates. [Beiträge zur Natur- und Insectengeschichte], together with a second volume with 20 plates.Nissen ZBI, 3466 & 2201.

Eigenh. Zahlungsanweisung mit U. ("Freyh. v d Trenck mp").

Glatz, vor dem 26. Nov. 1746. - 1 S. Qu.-8vo. Vgl. Stephani, Über des berüchtigten Friedrich v. Trenck Gefangenschaft in Glatz, in: Neues allg. Archiv für die Geschichtskunde des preuß. Staates 1 (1836), S. 129-139. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Souci des jardins. Calendula officinalis. Stipple engraving on unwatermarked wove paper (56 x 36.5 cm), printed in colour à la poupée and finished by hand, of a Calendula officinalis showing two branches with seven flowers and buds in various stages, signed "P.F. Le Grand sculp." In passepartout.

      - Van Boven & Segal, Gerard & Cornelis van Spaendonck, pp. 178-184, no. 13a; for the series: Blunt, pp. 175-176; Hunt 673 note; cf. An Oak Spring flora 58, 92 etc. Magnificent illustration of a Calendula officinalis, commonly known as a pot marigold, printed in colour and delicately finished by hand. This flowering plant is probably native to southern Europe, but also found further north in Europe and elsewhere in warm temperate regions. It is originally part of a series of flower prints by Gerard van Spaendonck, the only engraved work published during his lifetime, "entitled Fleurs dessinées d'après Nature, which contains twenty-four magnificent drawings, brilliantly interpreted in stipple by P.F. Le Grand and other engravers. These are probably the finest engravings of flowers ever made" (Blunt) and "they are among the most breath-taking series of plates in the [Hunt] library" (Hunt). The series was originally published in 6 parts with 4 plates and available printed in black, printed in colour, or (as in the present case) printed in colour and finished by hand.Gerard van Spaendonck (1746-1822) was a proponent of the Dutch school of floral painting. He singlehandedly transformed the genre of flower painting in France, where he managed to unite the realism of the Dutch school with the suave elegance of the French school. In 1780 he became Professeur de Peinture de Fleurs at the Jardin des Plantes. Among his many pupils was Pierre Joseph Redouté.A few minor spots and a couple minor restorations along the extremities, otherwise in very good condition.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1746 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 41,5 x 81,5; - description: Map shows upper Silesia with beautiful herladic cartouche and description of the cities.; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

This second edition nearly 2 centuries later, edited by the Florentine historian Anton Francesco Gori corrects some of Condivi's errors and adds illustrations and extensive notes and commentaries. The Vita occupies 58 pages, followed by a brief supplement by the Florentine architect and sculptor Girolamo Ticciati tracing Michelangelo's career from 1553 to his death in 1564 (pages 59-63); observations on Condivi's Vita in French by Pierre Mariette, (1694-1774) a Paris collector of and dealer in old master prints, a renowned connoisseur of prints and drawings (pages 65-79); annotations on the same by the erudite Florentine historian and philologist Domenico Maria Manni (1690 - 1788) (pages 81-86); historical notices and annotations by Gori on the same (87-124); a compendium edited by Gori in Italian of the most notable facts taken from Giorgio Vasari's Life of Michelangelo (125-144); followed by the index.         A TREATISE CONCERNING RELIGIOUS AFFECTIONS

Boston: Printed for S. Kneeland and T. Green, 1746. FIRST EDITION. This pro-revivalist treatise by prominent Congregational minister Jonathan Edwards was a defense of the role of emotion in religious conversion and a rebuttal of Charles Chauncy's denunciation of religious fervor he saw as histrionic. Based on his own religious experience, Edwards (1703-58) believed the heart was at least as important as the head in finding one's way to God, and he responds here to Chauncy's contempt for over-inflamed religious "passion." According to ANB, "Treatise" makes the point that "affections were different from passion, which overpowered the rational exercises of the mind." Like Chauncy, Edwards was disturbed by the fainting spells and other excessive demonstrations of conversion that took place at revivals, but he still saw conversion as a very emotional experience. Copies of this work are not especially rare, but our volume has fared far better than most over the years.. 198 x 136 mm. (7 3/4 x 5 3/8"). 1 p.l. (title), vi, 343, [9] pp. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary sheep, flat spine, absence of pastedowns displaying the stitching and the boards printed with legal rulings from ca. 1755 (restorations to joints and corners). Inside front board with a couple of later ownership notations; rear flyleaf with ink notations of the births of Elisebeth (1764) and Nathan (1761) Haskell. Evans 5767. Leather a little crackled, half a dozen small abrasions to boards, but the binding entirely sound. Title page a little soiled, final leaf with fore-edge margin replaced, penultimate leaf with horizontal tear across text neatly repaired with minimal effect on legibility, minor foxing to margins throughout, more pronounced on three gatherings, isolated small stains, but a very good copy, the text generally clean and fresh, with nothing approaching a major defect.
