De Astronomica Specula Domestica et Organico Apparatu Astronomico Libri Duo

Finely engraved frontis. of the interior of the Imperial Library in Vienna, 43 folding engraved plates, 17 engravings in the text (including 8 full-page), engraved plan of Vienna on title, engraved headpiece, & one initial. Title printed in red & black. 12 p.l. (incl. the frontis.), 210 pp., one leaf of errata. Folio, cont. mottled sheep (dampstain, for the most part quite faint, in lower portion of final 40 leaves), spine richly gilt, contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. Vienna: L.J. Kaliwoda, 1745. First edition of this luxuriously printed and illustrated volume; this is a particularly fine and handsome copy. This work describes and illustrates the astronomical instruments in the private observatory of G.J. Marinoni (1676-1755), mathematician and astronomer to the Imperial Court of Austria and geodetic surveyor. Like the private observatories of Tycho Brahe in the 16th century and Hevelius in the 17th century, Marinoni's observatory was one of the most beautiful and best equipped in Europe in his time. He built his own instruments and those illustrated here include quadrants, telescopes, micrometers, an improved Graham pendulum, and a camera obscura. Marinoni left all the instruments to the Empress Maria Theresa, to whom this work is dedicated. "In 1755...in connection with a general reform of the University of Vienna, the Hapsburgs decided to establish a great central astronomical observatory. Its basic equipment was to be the instruments of the late imperial mathematician and geodetic survey, J.J. de Marinoni, who had made his house, on a relatively favorable site at the edge of Vienna, into an astronomical observatory."-D.S.B., VI, p. 233. It should be noted that many of the instruments are still preserved at the Vienna Observatory. A fine, crisp, and large copy. This copy does not have, as usual, a second leaf of errata at end. It is not required in the usual bibliographies. Contemporary signature of "P. Theodorici Byhers Prof Cremisans 1746" and with the arms in gilt of the Kremsmünster Academy on upper cover. ❧ Boffito, p. 129 & plate 81. Poggendorff, II, 53. Riccardi, II, 119-"Bellissima ediz." Turner, Early Scientific Instruments. Europe 1400-1800, p. 223-"a remarkable collection of equipment." .

Catalogue des Livres du Cabinet de M. De Boze

Engraved frontis. & an allegorical headpiece by J.M. Preisler after Ed. Bouchardon and an added engraved port. of De Boze mounted on the leaf facing frontis. 4 p.l., 332, xxxi pp. Folio, cont. Parisian dark blue morocco, triple gilt fillets round sides, spine gilt in compartments, broad inside gilt borders, doublures & endleaves of yellow watered silk, a.e.g. [Paris: Privately Printed at the Imprimerie Royale], 1745. A famous private library catalogue, splendidly printed by the Imprimerie Royale, in an edition limited to 12, 25, 36 or 50 copies according to various bibliographers, and only distributed to friends of the collector. It is printed on fine "papier d'Annonay." De Boze (1680-1753), was principally a numismatist who, as a young man, collaborated with the king himself in the Médailles du Règne de Louis le Grand (1702). Later he was in charge of the "Cabinet des antiques et des Médailles" of the Bibliothèque Royale and became a member of the Académie française (his membership entitled him to have this catalogue printed by the Imprimerie Royale). He was also one of the most important book collectors of his period, owning copies of the Gutenberg Bible (acquired after 1745), the Mainz Psalter of 1457, the 1462 Bible on vellum, several blockbooks including the Speculum, and three Grolier bindings, and an "almost complete" series of the editiones principes of the Greek and Latin classics, &c. The catalogue was compiled by Jean Boudot II (1685-1754), Imprimeur du Roi, bookseller and bibliographer. The portrait of Boze added to this copy is something of a mystery: it has not been added to any copy traced of the 1745 catalogue nor, indeed, to any copies of the 1753 catalogue. It is a reduced copy of André Bouys's original engraving after his portrait of Boze. It must therefore be assumed that Boze's heir, his nephew Claude-César Theyssier, had it newly engraved by Simonneau as a memento to his uncle and had it added to the above copy (his own?). A magnificent copy from the collections of Comte de Lignerolles (his sale, III, 1894, lot 3257, "Superbe exemplaire, l'un des 12 tirés de format pet. in-fol."); Maurice Escoffier (no. 155 in his private library catalogue, "Somptueux catalogue privé"); Jacques Millot (with the latter two's bookplates); and Bernard H. Breslauer (Christie's New York, 21 March 2005, lot 42). Preserved in a cloth box. ❧ Brunet, I, 1642. Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 233. .

The Case of Marshal Bellisle Truly Stated [And] An Account of the

1745. [Belisle (Bellisle), Charles Louis Auguste, Duc de (1684-1761)]. The Case of Marshal Bellisle Truly Stated: In Which, The Manner of His Being Seized in Hanover, The Usage He Met There, And His Removal Hither, Are Examined by the Law of Nations, And Fully Justified, As Well by Precedents as Arguments; And the Reasons of His Being Brought Over and Detained Here, Explained and Defended. To Which is Prefixed, A Preface as to the Motives of the Present Publication. London: Printed for M. Cooper, 1745. vii, 45 pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). [Bound with] An Account of the Birth, Life, And Negociations of the Marechal Belisle: To Which is Subjoin' a Letter to the Author, Proving the Said Marechal to be a Wooden Horse, &c. London: Printed for Jacob Robinson, 1745. 31, [1] pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlets bound into later three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Some fading to spine, toning to pamphlets, light foxing and browning to a few leaves. Handsome. * First editions. Similar in content and degree of Francophobia, these pamphlets discuss the case of Marshall Belisle, an emissary sent to the German states by France to weaken and divide them during the War of the Austrian Succession. Belisle was taken prisoner by the English and detained in England for a year. The Case, in part an essay on the principles of international law invoking such authorities as Grotius, Pufendorf and Wicquefort, defends the seizure of an enemy diplomat and rejects the argument that this policy will lead to retaliation against English prisoners of war. The bitterly satirical Account warns against the detention of Belisle. His "captivity" is a ruse; he is actually a Trojan horse sent to exploit internal conflicts in England, as he did in Germany. OCLC locates 1 copy of Case in a North American law school (Harvard), no copies of Account. English Short-Title Catalogue T140952 (Case), T140964 (Account).

A View of the Palace of Medon / Vue du Chateau de Medon [Meudon]

      - Paris: circa 1745. Hand-coloured engraving. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition. Framed in a beautiful gold-leaf frame with a cream washline mount. Image size: 8 1/8 x 16 inches. Framed size: 16 1/4 x 22 3/4 inches. A magnificent view of the Chateau of Meudon on the outskirts of Paris by the celebrated landscape engraver Jacques Rigaud. Meudon has a long history. The buildings depicted here were the result of renovations untaken by Le Grand Dauphin, son of Louis XIV, who employed a number of architects, most prominently Hardouin-Mansart. The main building burned down just after the armistice that ended the France-Prussian War in 1871. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a market developed among English and European travelers and vicarious travelers for prints of their countries' natural and man-made beauties. This grew out of a new sense of national identity, confidence and patriotism. Artists and printmakers began to publish topographical prints of important sights and architectural attractions, which in turn encouraged a wider public recognition of and sense of pride in national treasures. Addressing this market, Jacques Rigaud made a name for himself in both France and England as one of the most accomplished landscape engravers. He executed a large series of works depicting France's stately homes and he worked in England, where he was commissioned to illustrate the celebrated gardens at Stowe. Rigaud's work influenced an entire generation of English and French printmakers; his delicate formal engravings established a classical format for topographical prints, which would be used until the onset of the nineteenth century. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes III, p. 337, no. 95-100 (Le Blanc mistakenly confuses Jacques Rigaud with his nephew Jean Baptiste Rigaud and attributes Jacques' work wrongly) Clayton, The English Print 1688-1802 p. 156-157

        DELL'ANATOMIA. DISCORSO D'ANTONIO COCCHI MUGELLANO.

FIRENZE, GIO. BATISTA ZANNONI, 1745 - Elegante legatura in piena pelle rossa, duplice filetto in oro ai piatti; dorso abilmente rifatto con autore e titolo in oro su tassello verde, fregi e filetti sempre in oro agli scomparti; tagli dorati, dentelle interne e sguardie marmorizzate. 0 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Prospectus Londinium Sedes Regia, et praecipua Urbs in Anglia ad Temes Fluoium

Ausburg:, 1745. [London] Size: 397 x 485 mm. Copperplate engraving. Good condition. Some restoration work completed to lower margins and edges, mainly in the margins, most affecting the engraved surface. A scarce, unusual and highly stylised plan of London by Haffner and Ruprecht. The number six appears alongside the crest of the City of London below the plan, suggesting that this plan was one of a series of plans or views of the capital done by this duo. The title is written in Latin, French, Italian and German. Above the plan, the word "Londen" appears in reverse. The plan features a bustling River Thames, alive with mercantile activity. On the southern bank of the river, Shakespeare's famous Globe theatre appears, easily recognisable by a pennant flying proudly. Old London Bridge is seen linking Southwark with the City of London. St. Paul's Cathedral is easily recognised, as it dominates the city skyline, even though it is totally surrounded by a myriad of other ecclesiastical spires. The Tower of London is seen at the eastern edge of the plan. Haffner was an engraver, born in Ulm in 1668, died in Ausburg in 1754.

Decorative b/w cartouche, views of the Seven Churches, description and devices of the (then) 14 districts, as defined by Benedictus IV in 1743.         Recherches sur les vertus de l'eau de goudron, o? l'on joint des Réfléctions Philosophiques sur diverses autres sujets. Avec deux Lettres de l'Auteur.

Pierre Mortier,, Amsterdam 1745 - FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH OF BERKELEY'S LAST WORK, Siris, a chain of philosophical reflections and enquiries concerning the virtues of tar-water (1744) and of his two letters on the subject to Thomas Prior. At the time of its publication, Siris was the most popular of the author's many works. Berkeley had observed the use of tar-water among the native Americans and came to regard it as a panacaea in medicine, setting up an apparatus for its manufacture. "He recommends it not only in fevers, diseases of the lungs, cancers, scrofula, throat diseases, apoplexies, chronic disorders of all kinds, but also as a general drink for infants. It strengthens their bodies and sharpens their intellects. It is good for cattle. It is good for all climates, land and sea, for rich and poor, high and low livers, and he had himself drunk a gallon of it in a few hours" (DNB).The Siris is, however, more than just a medical work and the consideration of tar-water led Berkeley into a lengthy chain of reflections on the principles of the universe and of divine providence. 8vo (164 × 91mm.), pp. xxiv, 343, [1]. Woodcut ornaments. Contemporary calf, gilt panelled spine with flower tools, red morocco label. Small chip to head of spine. An excellent copy, clean and crisp in a nice contemporary binding.         South Prospect of Worksop Mannor, in the County of Nottingham

London: Engraved by Saml. & Natl. Buck and Published according to Act of Parliament, No. 1 Garden Court, Middle Temple, 1745. Engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild rippling and creasing, and a bit of minor mat burn. 15 x 23 1/2 inches. 16 1/2 x 25 3/4 inches. A spectacular panoramic view of Worksop Manor, the sprawling family seat of the Duke of Norfolk. Between 1720 and 1752, Samuel Buck and his younger brother Nathaniel toured England and Wales to record the castles and abbeys that scattered the countryside. Their detailed views provide an invaluable record of England's architectural antiquities, offering, in some cases, the only trace of ruined or lost buildings. Nathaniel and Samuel executed over 400 views in addition to 100 general views of English and Welsh cities. These detailed panoramas remain some of their most sought-after works, providing a fascinating view of England's most prominent cities. The Worksop Manor pictured here, a superb example of Elizabethan architecture, burnt down in 1761, not very long after the Buck's made this engraving.

The Ottens family were Dutch publishers from Amsterdam. Jusua and Reiner published 'Atlas Major' in 1745 which is most likely where this map comes from. Atlases of Dutch maps assembled to order were issued by Ottens varying from 4 to 15 volumes..

Facsimile Manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería

16 facsimile hand written pages with diagrams and three fold out diagrams of Palenque. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 1/2") bound in velum with black label and gilt lettering to cover. Testimonio's Tabula Americae. Limited to 980 copies of which this is 169. Spanish artillery Captain Antonio del Río?s (ca. 1745-ca. 1789) discovery of tangible evidence of an amazingly rich Maya past and this printed report were the beginning of the study of this truly lost civilization. In May 1786 upon the order of the Spanish Crown, Governor and Brigadier General of the Royal Audencia of Guatemala, Don José Estachería sent Río to Chiapas to investigate rumors of an ancient city near Santo Domingo del Palenque and determine the origin of its inhabitants. Rio was preceded by other visitors to Palenque, the most recent being two brief forays by José Antonio Calderón, a local official, and Spanish architect Antonio Bernasconi, whose sparse observations prompted the order for the full-scale investigation by Río. The Spanish captain made up for his lack of antiquarian training with his zeal, hiring seventy-nine Maya locals to assault with crowbars and axes the abandoned, tree-engulfed, seventh-century city of Palenque. In his report Río describes and comments on the hieroglyphs he saw. Río sent his manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería, and it was preserved in Madrid. Almendáriz?s original drawings were recently found in a private European collection and published: Estampas de Palenque (not included here), Madrid: Testimonio, 1993. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the author?s manuscript and Waldeck?s drawings re-emerged in a still mysterious manner to be published in England. Publisher Henry Berthoud bought the manuscript from a mysterious Dr. McQuy (McQueen?) in Jamaica at the end of April 1822. Capitalizing on public interest in American indigenous cultures as well as in Romantic ruins, Berthoud published Rio?s work in hopes of a popular bestseller, which might otherwise have been lost.Condition:A Fine copy.
