Reglas utiles para los aficionados a danzar: provechoso divertimiento de los que gustan tocar instrumentos. Y politicas advertencias a todo genero de personas. Adornado con varias laminas.Capoa, Joseph Testore, 1745. Small 8vo (14×10 cm). With 35 woodcuts in text (including many full-page), 7 folding leaves with woodcut music notation and letterpress text, and some letterpress text set along curves. Many of the full-page woodcuts and some on the folding leaves also include dance notation. Mid 19th-century gold-tooled green calf, with the emblematic device of the "Bibliotheca de Salvá" and initials VSP (=Vicente Salvá y Pérez) on each board.

Biblioteca de Salvá 2513 (this copy); Derra de Moroda 925; Huth library 2848; cf. S.S. Bueno "Reglas útiles para los aficionados a danzar..., de Bartolomé Ferriol i Boxeraus" ; Magriel, p. 98 (Malaga ed.); Palau 90688-90789 (Naples & Malaga ed.). One of the three editions, all dated 1745, of a richly illustrated work on dancing by the Catalan dance instructor D. Bartolome Ferriol y Boxereaux. Derra de Moroda considers it one of the two principal works of 18th-century dance in Spain ("a very rare book"), although it primarily describes the practice of French dance then in vogue. The main text is divided into 3 parts treating the different steps of French dance, the movement of the legs and arms and the art of choreography. It shows both the dance notation of Feuillet and that of Rameau. The book is fascinating not only as an important record of dance and its notation, but also for its experimental graphic design. From the Salvá library, formed by Vicente Salvá y Pérez (1780-1849) and his son, Pedro Salvá y Mallén (1811-1869). Title-page restored in the gutter margin and leaf C2 with a small corner torn off just touching the catchword. Very good copy of one of the principal sources on the history of dancing in Spain in the 18th century.

'T Hooge Heemraedschap van Rhynland. [Amsterdam, Isaak Tirion], 1746. Very large engraved wall map of the Rijnland water district in 12 map sheets and 1 title-sheet, the title-sheet divided into 3 strips, the whole mounted on cloth (measuring 185 x 169 cm as assembled). Coloured and shellacked by a contemporary hand, with gold for the lettering of the title and the coat of arms. With the water board's coat of arms, and two decorative cartouches listing the members of the water board in 1687 and 1746. Framed.

Donkersloot-De Vrij 715. Third state (extensively corrected and updated) of a finely engraved wall map of the Rijnland water district in Holland, including the cities of Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden and (on the district border) The Hague. At a scale of about 1:30,000 it shows the entire district and some surrounding land in great detail, with the fortifications and (outside the cities) the individual houses, windmills, churches and other buildings shown, besides the roads, paths, waterways, and the individual parcels of land in the polders. In 1745 the Rijnland waterboard ordered the surveyor Melchior Bolstra to correct the outdated map of Dou and Broeckhuysen of 1647, which had been slightly revised in 1687. The results of Bolstra's new survey were engraved on the original plates by David Coster.Evenly browned, except along the edges of the sheets, and some small smudges. Good copy of a large wall map of the Rijnland water district.

Planisphere Representant Toute L'Etendue du Monde

Amsterdam: Reiner Ottens, 1745. Engraved handcoloured map with ornate neoclassical ornamentation, 538 x 313 mm. (sheet size), fine. A magnificent French early eighteenth-century map of the world depicting the orb resting upon the shoulders of a finely engraved Hercules, complete with club and lion-skin cloak. The map is from the Atlas de la Navigation et du Commerce first published by Louis Renard and reissued twice by the Amsterdam bookseller Reiner Ottens in 1739 and 1745. The map is an example of the partially coloured issue, with the continents treated in primary colours, and is a fine example of Dutch neoclassical ornamentation. This map treats Australia as a super-continent: it is labelled both Terres Australes and Nouvelle Hollande and incorporates qualities of both geographical conceptions. While the Australian coast has no pretensions to exactitude it is nonetheless interesting that a strait is shown between New Guinea and Terres Australes. The extreme extension of the antipodes on this map is unusual given the north polar perspective it is generated from. Louis Renard (c.1678-1746), was a French born entrepreneur and spy for the English monarchy who flourished in Amsterdam as a printer and bookseller. He published a wide range of works aside from his maps and atlases, and is best known for his beautifully illustrated handbook of tropical marine fishes first published in 1719. In addition to selling books and prints, Renard traded as an apothecary and broker of English bonds in the Netherlands. For some years he was in the employment of the English crown as an agent and spy, and during his lifetime worked for Queen Anne, the Kings George I and George II.

A MAP OF NORTH AMERICA With the European Settlements & whatever else is remarkable in ye. WEST INDIES from the latest and best Observations.

London. c1745 - Size: 485 x 385 mm. Fine condition. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Very attractive eighteenth century map of North America produced at a transitional point in terms of European understanding of the geography of the New World - the Mississippi Valley, Mexico, the Great Lakes, and the Atlantic Coast are portrayed in detail with great accuracy, while the north-western portion of the continent is labelled "Parts Unknown" and California is depicted as an island. It is one of the last maps to perpetuate that misinformation about California, which had influenced cartography for some 145 years. Also shown are routes of explorers, mountains as raised topography, European and Indian towns, forts, and castles. Shaded areas marked with arrows indicate the trade winds. Decorative title cartouche at lower right. The map was drawn & engraved by Richard Wilson Seale (fl.1732-1773) for "The History of England" Written in French by Mr. Rapin de Thoyras. Translated into English with Additional Notes by N. Tindal. M.A. the Vicar of Great Waltham in Essex, England. This is a very attractive map with excellent detail. Published in 'Mr. Tindal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England'.

Dublin: Printed for Ignatius Kelly. 1745 - 12mo (in 6s), 162 x 90 mms., pp. [ii], 202 [203 -214 Index], recent boards, paper label on spine; occasional staining of text; with small binder's ticket on lower margin of front paste-down end-paper: "Bound by Antiquarian Bookcrafts Mary Craft Courtyard, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16." Lamotte's work was first published in London in 1730 and reprinted in 1731. It was published in Dublin - "printed for Thomas Bacon" - in 1742, and this would appear to be the same sheets with a cancel title-page, which is clearly tipped onto A2. Lamotte (?1781 - 1741) Lamotte is at pains to point out what he considers lascivious or obscene in painting, but he doesn't call for its suppression. His aesthetic principles are eclectically, but inflexibly, classical. The work also contains a ten-page comment on the origin of clocks and time-keeping. ESTC N9429 locates copies in National Library of Ireland and Trinity College [Dublin] Library in these islands; Haverford, Princeton, Library Company of Philadelphia, and California Irvine in North America. Verhandeling over de electriciteit, en derzelver oorzaken.Amsterdam, H.W. van Welbergen, 1751. 3 parts in 1 volume. 8vo. With 11 engraved folding plates. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine.

Ad. 1: Cat. Wheeler Gift 313 b; cf: Bierens de Haan 5343 and 5344 (ed. 1745 and 1746); ad 2: cf: Bierens de Haan 5239; Poggendorff 1243. Early work on electricity. Johann Winkler (1703-1770) improved the construction of the electric generator by using a leather cushion pad held against the globe by adjustable springs, rather than the palm of the hand, and made a further improvement by having the globe rotated by a cord connected to a foot treadle through an elastic rod, thereby releasing both hands. With these improvements he was able to rotate the globe of his machine as fast as 680 turns per minute and produced much brighter and stronger discharges. He also expanded earlier displays and attempted to determine the speed of the movement of electricity, concluding that no interval of time could be observed. The first part of his book describes the properties and causes of electric phenomena; the second investigates the quality of electric matter and electric fire. The essay by the German mining engineer J.S. von Waitz (1698-1777), who wrote two other essays in Dutch and one in French on the subject, won in 1744 the price at the Berlin Academy for the best dissertation on the subject of electricity. With library stamp on half-title, ownership's inscriptions on the title-page and dedication, one plate slightly waterstained, and a few wormholes. Binding with slightly rubbed sides. Very good copy.

However little the merits of Leibnitz's claim may be, as to its origination (although it is now generally acknowledged that his invention was an independent one), there can be no doubt as to the superiority of his notation to Newton's fluxional one, which was stubbornly adhered to at the english universities and prevented this country from having any important share in the progress of the calculus for more than a century after its invention". DSB 2, 286.First edition. It is the first work of one of the fathers of modern biology. He demonstrated the existence of parthenogenesis in the plant louses. Its experiments, rigorously undertaken, are thoroughly described here: For " we must defy ourselves of what the reasoning indicates & to consult the experiment as far as we can it. " Well before Claude bernard, Bonnet attributed a preponderant role in scientific research to the "art of observing". The second part is devoted to its " Observations on some species of fresh water worms which crossed per pieces, become complete animals as many.       Patavii - Joannem Manfre, 1745. Patavii - Joannem Manfre, 1745 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarcefirst editionof this commentary on the life of Jesus Christ and his mother by Pope Benedict XIV. In Latin. In two parts. Pope Benedict XIV (31 March 1675 3 May 1758), born Prospero Lorenzo Lambertini, was Pope from 17 August 1740 to 3 May 1758. He had a very active papacy, reforming the education of priests, the calendar of feasts of the Church, and many papal institutions. Perhaps the most important act of Benedict XIV's pontificate was the promulgation of his famous laws about missions in the two bulls, Ex quo singulari and Omnium solicitudinum. In these bulls he ruled on the custom of accommodating Christian words and usages to express non-Christian ideas and practices of the native cultures, which had been extensively done by the Jesuits in their Indian and Chinese missions. Translated from Italian into Latin by Michael Angelus de Giacomellis. Condition: In a full sprinkled calf binding. Externally worn, with some loss to the baords and some wear to the head of the spine. Joints are cracked, and boards are held by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. Ink stamp to recto of front free-endpaper. Ink signature to title page. Pages are bright and clean, with just some light scattered spotting in places (heavier to first and last few pages).
