An Essay upon Poetry and Painting, with Relation to the Sacred and Prophane History. With an Appendix concerning Obscenity in Writing and Painting.

Dublin: Printed for Ignatius Kelly. 1745 - 12mo (in 6s), 162 x 90 mms., pp. [ii], 202 [203 -214 Index], recent boards, paper label on spine; occasional staining of text; with small binder's ticket on lower margin of front paste-down end-paper: "Bound by Antiquarian Bookcrafts Mary Craft Courtyard, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16." Lamotte's work was first published in London in 1730 and reprinted in 1731. It was published in Dublin - "printed for Thomas Bacon" - in 1742, and this would appear to be the same sheets with a cancel title-page, which is clearly tipped onto A2. Lamotte (?1781 - 1741) Lamotte is at pains to point out what he considers lascivious or obscene in painting, but he doesn't call for its suppression. His aesthetic principles are eclectically, but inflexibly, classical. The work also contains a ten-page comment on the origin of clocks and time-keeping. ESTC N9429 locates copies in National Library of Ireland and Trinity College [Dublin] Library in these islands; Haverford, Princeton, Library Company of Philadelphia, and California Irvine in North America.         Nieuwe natuurkundige ontdekkingen, aangaande de eigenschappen, werkingen, en oorzaaken der electriciteit, of uitlokkings-kragt. Including: (2) WINCKLER, Johann Heinrich. 8vo. With 11 engraved folding plates. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine.

Ad. 1: Cat. Wheeler Gift 313 b; cf: Bierens de Haan 5343 and 5344 (ed. 1745 and 1746); ad 2: cf: Bierens de Haan 5239; Poggendorff 1243. Early work on electricity. Johann Winkler (1703-1770) improved the construction of the electric generator by using a leather cushion pad held against the globe by adjustable springs, rather than the palm of the hand, and made a further improvement by having the globe rotated by a cord connected to a foot treadle through an elastic rod, thereby releasing both hands. With these improvements he was able to rotate the globe of his machine as fast as 680 turns per minute and produced much brighter and stronger discharges. He also expanded earlier displays and attempted to determine the speed of the movement of electricity, concluding that no interval of time could be observed. The first part of his book describes the properties and causes of electric phenomena; the second investigates the quality of electric matter and electric fire. The essay by the German mining engineer J.S. von Waitz (1698-1777), who wrote two other essays in Dutch and one in French on the subject, won in 1744 the price at the Berlin Academy for the best dissertation on the subject of electricity. With library stamp on half-title, ownership's inscriptions on the title-page and dedication, one plate slightly waterstained, and a few wormholes. Binding with slightly rubbed sides. Very good copy.

However little the merits of Leibnitz's claim may be, as to its origination (although it is now generally acknowledged that his invention was an independent one), there can be no doubt as to the superiority of his notation to Newton's fluxional one, which was stubbornly adhered to at the english universities and prevented this country from having any important share in the progress of the calculus for more than a century after its invention".

DSB 2, 286.First edition. It is the first work of one of the fathers of modern biology. He demonstrated the existence of parthenogenesis in the plant louses. Its experiments, rigorously undertaken, are thoroughly described here: For " we must defy ourselves of what the reasoning indicates & to consult the experiment as far as we can it. " Well before Claude bernard, Bonnet attributed a preponderant role in scientific research to the "art of observing". The second part is devoted to its " Observations on some species of fresh water worms which crossed per pieces, become complete animals as many.       Patavii - Joannem Manfre, 1745. Patavii - Joannem Manfre, 1745 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarcefirst editionof this commentary on the life of Jesus Christ and his mother by Pope Benedict XIV. In Latin. In two parts. Pope Benedict XIV (31 March 1675 3 May 1758), born Prospero Lorenzo Lambertini, was Pope from 17 August 1740 to 3 May 1758. He had a very active papacy, reforming the education of priests, the calendar of feasts of the Church, and many papal institutions. Perhaps the most important act of Benedict XIV's pontificate was the promulgation of his famous laws about missions in the two bulls, Ex quo singulari and Omnium solicitudinum. In these bulls he ruled on the custom of accommodating Christian words and usages to express non-Christian ideas and practices of the native cultures, which had been extensively done by the Jesuits in their Indian and Chinese missions. Translated from Italian into Latin by Michael Angelus de Giacomellis. Condition: In a full sprinkled calf binding. Externally worn, with some loss to the baords and some wear to the head of the spine. Joints are cracked, and boards are held by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. Ink stamp to recto of front free-endpaper. Ink signature to title page. Pages are bright and clean, with just some light scattered spotting in places (heavier to first and last few pages).         Les amours pastorals de Daphnis et Chlo?.

[n.p.,Paris:] 1745. - The Philippe d'Orl?ans (1674-1723) plates originally appeared in 1718. Another edition appeared in 1731, in which the plates may or may not have been reengraved. Ray in his Art of the French Illustrated Book discusses the 1745 edition, which appeared in two formats, a small quarto and an octavo format. Ray says the plates were reengraved for the small quarto format, in order to provide an improved setting for the Regent's plates. He does not say whether the plates were reengraved for the octavo edition. Also, Ray describes twenty-eight plates (thirteen folding), rather than the twenty-five here, but only five vignettes, where our copy has eight. The 1718, 1731 and 1745 editions are all uncommon. Small octavo. [10], 159, [1], xx pp. Title-page in black and red. Engraved title (dated 1717), twenty-five engraved plates (eleven folding), and eight head-pieces, tailpieces and vignettes. The plates were engraved by Benoit Audran after designs by Philippe d;'Orleans. Full crimson morocco, gilt-ruled covers, gilt spine, tooled in compartments with floral decorations. Gilt green morocco doublures, green silk free endleaves, marbled paper leaves at front ang back. All edges gilt. A beautiful, though unsigned, binding, in fine condition, in morocco-tipped slipcase.       Dublin Castle, 2. I. 1745.. 1½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten, geschrieben sechs Tage vor Antritt der Lord-Lieutenancy of Ireland: "I am so much inclined to serve Captain Lushington, who belongs to me here, that I should have little merit in obeying your Lordship's orders, were it in my power to do it; but hitherto He has been above me, being a Captain already, and I having yet had nothing above a company to dispose of. In the Commission I gave your Lordship to be my Steward, I inserted the fullest powers possible, without either account or Control, and have not reserv'd to my self the liberty of even advising much less of directing. And whatever you think fit to do, will I am sure be the best that can be done, and whatever I should have done my self, would certainly have been the worst [...]". - Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt und gering fleckig; Bl. 2 etwas angestaubt und mit einigen winzigen Papierdurchbrüchen, verso Spuren alter Montage.

The Case of Marshal Bellisle Truly Stated [And] An Account of the...

1745. [Belisle (Bellisle), Charles Louis Auguste, Duc de (1684-1761)]. The Case of Marshal Bellisle Truly Stated: In Which, The Manner of His Being Seized in Hanover, The Usage He Met There, And His Removal Hither, Are Examined by the Law of Nations, And Fully Justified, As Well by Precedents as Arguments; And the Reasons of His Being Brought Over and Detained Here, Explained and Defended. To Which is Prefixed, A Preface as to the Motives of the Present Publication. London: Printed for M. Cooper, 1745. vii, 45 pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). [Bound with] An Account of the Birth, Life, And Negociations of the Marechal Belisle: To Which is Subjoin' a Letter to the Author, Proving the Said Marechal to be a Wooden Horse, &c. London: Printed for Jacob Robinson, 1745. 31, [1] pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlets bound into later three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Some fading to spine, toning to pamphlets, light foxing and browning to a few leaves. Handsome. * First editions. Similar in content and degree of Francophobia, these pamphlets discuss the case of Marshall Belisle, an emissary sent to the German states by France to weaken and divide them during the War of the Austrian Succession. Belisle was taken prisoner by the English and detained in England for a year. The Case, in part an essay on the principles of international law invoking such authorities as Grotius, Pufendorf and Wicquefort, defends the seizure of an enemy diplomat and rejects the argument that this policy will lead to retaliation against English prisoners of war. The bitterly satirical Account warns against the detention of Belisle. His "captivity" is a ruse; he is actually a Trojan horse sent to exploit internal conflicts in England, as he did in Germany. OCLC locates 1 copy of Case in a North American law school (Harvard), no copies of Account. English Short-Title Catalogue T140952 (Case), T140964 (Account)..

CARTE DU CANADA OU DE LA NOUVELLE FRANCE ET DES DECOUVERTES QUI Y ON ETE FAITES

Paris: Quai de L'Horloge , 17043 (1745). Copperplate engraving with hand colouring in outline. Upper margin browned with chips to corners, a nice strong impression. Sixth state. Kershaw I #313 ; Tooley #40. 19-1/2" x 25-1/4"-49.5 x 64.1. This seminal map of Great Lakes and Northern Canada Del'Isle first charted in 1703, and is reissued in this 1745 edition. It is lavishly decorated with a cartouche illustrating Native North Americans, Jesuits, and local flora and Fauna. There are several indications of historical discoveries such as the exploration of "New Denmark" by Jean Munck, the discovery of Baffin Bay by William Baffin in 1622 and the Straits of Davis in 1585. Noteworthy is the "Riviere Longue" an entirely fictitious river first "discovered" by Baron Lahontan in 1705 (and later copied by several prominent cartographers). Indeed Del'Isle seems to cast some doubt on the validity of the Riviere Longue as indicated in his missive under the cartouche. Del'Isle's map was the first printed map to show Detroit (founded two years prior) and it is considered "a superior rendering of the Great Lakes area than in his map of North America in 1700" (Tooley)

Citron morocco, gilt back with raised bands, gilt triple-rule border on sides with gilt stamped floral ornament in corners, inner gilt-dentelles, all edges gilt. Lower cover slightly discolored, otherwise a beautiful copy. Housed in a custom brown cloth clamshell. "Rather a paraphrase than a translation of Lord Shaftesbury's An Inquiry Concerning Virtue and Merit. Yet it is a very important work, indeed, for the growth and development of his thought. It was Diderot who furnished the Réflexions in a preliminary discours and lengthy footnotes to which students of Diderot now turn for precious indications of the unfolding of his ideas. It will be noticed that the French version is anonymous, neither Shaftesbury's name nor that of the translator was mentioned. The reason was that there was some danger involved in presenting to the French public a work that declared so boldly for the existence of a natural morality independant of any particular religion or church" (Arthur M. Wilson, Diderot, p. 50). Tchemerzine-Scheler, II, p. 916. Thomas, A checklist of major French authors in Oxford libraries, 1526-1800, p. 47. HBS 66927. $5,000 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
