A View in Lyme Park (With that extraordinary Custom of driving the Stags;) the property of Peter Legh Esqr

1745 - Copper engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild creasing, and a few skillfully repaired small tears in the margins. A picturesque view of Lyme Park in Cheshire, the ancestral estate of the Legh family, after the celebrated landscape artist Smith of Derby. This beautifully rendered print is one of 23 plates Vivares engraved after Smith. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, a trend developed among English artists and printmakers who sought to visually record the natural beauty of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those armchair travelers who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. One of the earliest and most influential landscape artists to begin this trend was Thomas Smith who came to be known as "Smith of Derby." Smith traveled the north of England painting famous houses and beautiful views. He was one of the first artists to depict wild landscape scenes, which became immensely fashionable with the development of the "picturesque landscape" towards the end of the century. Smith's paintings not only captured the English countryside at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, but also recorded the activities of visiting tourists and local inhabitants. These works capture a period in England's history, which was forever changed by the wheels of progress. Before the mills and the factories came to dominate the landscape of northern England, Smith depicted its wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. This beautiful view of the bucolic scenery of Lyme Park is a lovely example of Smith's superior work. As the title states, the practice of driving the stags through what was called "Stag Pond" each year at Midsummer was indeed extraordinary. There were large herds of red deer and wild cattle on the property, and at some point it became traditional to drive the deer around the park, ending with the swim through the pond. The last stag has just entered the water and two of the first in line are having a brief skirmish (though it looks rather like a dance). We have not yet discovered the purpose of the summer swim.

XXVII + 354 pp. 21,5cm. Bound. First edition. Vaz (1651-1711) was a Goan missionary of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri . He was Superior of the missions at Canar from 1681-84 , and in 1687 sailed for Ceylon where he ministered at Kandy . Vaz 's work greatly strengthened arguments in favor of indigenous clergy , who were often considered unsuitable for missionary work . The book is of particular importance because it was published 34 years after Vaz had died and when many people still remained who had known him and had witnessed the related facts. This work is very interesting and valuable for the history of the Portuguese missions in Eastern India in the last quarter of the seventeenth century and the first quarter of the eighteenth. Very rare. Full leather binding. Very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Madrid, Manuel Fernandez, 1745. 4to (220 x 150mm). pp. (48), 403, (5); pp. (8), 412, (16), with 1 large engraved folding map of the Orinoco and 2 engraved plates. Contemporary limp vellum, with contemporary manuscript title on spines (remains of ties). A very fine copy of the second enlarged edition. The first edition was published in 1741. José Gumilla (1686-1750), Spanish Jesuit, stayed for 30 years at the Orinoco missions and was the first to publish a comprehensive account on the Orinoco river, its people, tribes and natural history. "The work of father Gumilla is one of the most curious and interesting hitherto published upon the country of the Orinoco." (Sabin 29276). "He travelled widely on the Middle Orinoco and had ascended to Apure, Arauca and Meta rivers... and in 1741 published what was the first descriptive account of the Orinoco and its tributaries... In his book Gumilla spoke bitterly of the slave traders who invaded his country" (Howgego p. 464). The present work is based on Gumilla's personal observations as well as material he found in manuscripts left by fathers Mercado and Ribera.         Autograph letter signed ("Chesterfield").

Dublin Castle, 2. I. 1745. - 4to. 1½ pp. on double leaf. To an unnamed addressee, written six days before his appointment as Lord-Lieutenancy of Ireland: "I am so much inclined to serve Captain Lushington, who belongs to me here, that I should have little merit in obeying your Lordship's orders, were it in my power to do it; but hitherto He has been above me, being a Captain already, and I having yet had nothing above a company to dispose of. In the Commission I gave your Lordship to be my Steward, I inserted the fullest powers possible, without either account or Control, and have not reserv'd to my self the liberty of even advising much less of directing. And whatever you think fit to do, will I am sure be the best that can be done, and whatever I should have done my self, would certainly have been the worst [.]". - Slightly browned due to paper and somewhat spotty; fol. 2 slightly spotty and with small paper breakthrough, traces of old mounting on the reverse.
