Forestiere Illuminato Dell Citta Di Venezia.

1745 1745 - VENICE. ALBRIZZI, Giovanni Battista. [16], 419, [13] pp. including final blank. Illustrated with an engraved dedicatory frontispiece, an engraved bird's-eye view of Venice, and 72 views of the city and the surrounding islands on 46 plates, 28 of them double-page, engraved by Giuseppe Filosi and Francesco Zucchi. 8vo., 156 x 108 mm, bound in contemporary Italian brown speckled paste paper over boards, paper title label on spine, grey sprinkled edges. Venezia: Giambatista Albrizzi, 1745. Second Edition, expanded with ca. 80 additional pages and 4 more engravings. One of "the most important guides to Venice, both for its richness of information and illustrations." (Grand Tour: The Lure of Eighteenth Century Italy 88). The Forestiere illuminato is divided into six giornate in Venice, including descriptions of the palaces, churches, libraries, colleges, schools, monasteries, public monuments, etc., often listing the major works of art residing in each institution as of 1745. Dedicated to Frederick Christian, Prince-Elector of Saxony, the guide concludes with trips to the islands of the Venetian lagoon from San Giorgio all the way to Torcello. A final section lists Venetian festivals and public entertainments by the month. The double-page engravings are signed by F. Zucchi (1692-1764), including the last one, depicting the grand Chinese barge (peota) honoring the Elector of Saxony in the regatta of May 1716. It is likely Zucchi was responsible for a number of the unsigned plates as well. Giambatista Albrizzi (1698-1777), member of a distinguished family active in book publishing and bookselling in Venice for some 150 years, was also a patron and collector of art and a prominent figure in the cultural and intellectual life of eighteenth-century Venice. Albrizzi frequently collaborated with major Venetian artists of the day, such as Piazzetta, Zanetti, and Bartolozzi, who illustrated volumes for the Albrizzi press. On account of its huge success, this detailed guide to Venice was frequently reprinted in the eighteenth century, and again as recently as 2009. A very fine, very fresh copy, in original, unsophisticated condition. Cicogna 4479. Schlosser-Magnino 459. Berlin Katalog 2696. Robison, The Glory of Venice (1994), p. 516 (cites only the 1765 edition). Not in Cicognara. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Avec réflexions (Principles of Moral Philosophy, or Essays of Mr. S**** on merit and virtue. With reflections).

Zacharie Chatelain, Amsterdam [Paris] 1745 - 1 blank leaf + TP + iii-xxx + 1 leaf with engraving frontispiece on verso + 1-130 + half title + [131] with engraved frontispiece on verso + [133]-297 + [299]-[307] = Table des Matieres + 1 blank leaf. 12 mo. First Edition (Tchemerzine IV, p. 424)Title vignette and two frontispieces created by Durand and engraved by Fessard.Diderot's very loose translation of Shaftesbury's first book, An Inquiry Concerning Virtue, in Two Discourses, that was originally published in 1699 and which Shaftesbury then substantially revised when including it in the 1711, three-volume compilation, Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times. Diderot's 'translation' - with comments - is also in two parts but published as one volume. Despite the fact that the book begins with an 'open letter' from Diderot to his brother attacking religious intolerance, the book was still printed without the name of either Shaftesbury or Diderot on the title page and with a false attribution to an Amsterdam publisher. The work, which declared morality to be independent of any particular religion, church or Revelation was considered too scandalous to be acknowledged publicly. Shaftesbury had argued (and Diderot here reinforces with his own commentary) the belief that anyone who declares their belief in a just and benevolent God must already have some pre-Deity standard of judgement by which he decides that God should be just and benevolent. This work was a clear precursor to Diderot's more personal and radical Penées Philosophiques which was published the next year. full calf with ribbed spine in gilt lettering and red field. The title page has four lines of contemporary writing interleafed with the publisher's device identifying both Shaftsbury and Diderot. Clean and well-margined, an excellent copy.         ILIAD OF HOMER. Translated by Alexander Pope, Esq. [with,] THE ODYSSEY OF HOMER. Translated from the Greek

London W. Bowyer; Henry Lintot 1720; 1745 - 11 volumes in six. A complete set of the very scarce FIRST "POCKET" or SMALLER FORMAT EDITION and second edition overall of Pope’s great translation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Finely engraved plates, titles, head and tail pieces, portraits and maps throughout all the volumes. Fine, heraldic ownership plates of Bolton in each volume. 8vo, handsome later antique half-calf over marbled boards, the spines with raised bands gilt stippled, the compartments with central gilt ornamental devices and red morocco lettering labels gilt, red edges. A very handsome set, fresh and clean. VERY SCARCE. A FINE SET IN ANTIQUE CALF GILT. ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS AND PLATES THROUGHOUT. It has been justifiably claimed that Pope's translation is inaccurate due to his reliance on the sense of the texts of Chapman, Hobbes, Ogilby, Dacier and others--but "others have produced translations; Pope's work is a poem" (CHEL, IX, p. 84). Its fame and longevity are due more to Pope's desire to keep the spirit and fire of the epic alive than any obligation to render Homer in academic exactitude. HOMER'S ILIADS AND ODYSSEYS ARE STILL CONSIDERED THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL WORKS IN ALL OF GREEK CLASSICAL LITERATURE, AND THE WELLSPRING OF ALL SUBSEQUENT LITERATURE. The primacy of Homer's OPERA, particularly the ILIAD and ODYSSEY, cannot be overstated. "The ILIAD and ODYSSEY are the first perfect poetry of the western world. They spring fully grown, their predecessors lost, and their magic has persisted ever since. The legends of the siege of Troy and the return of Odysseus are the common heritage of all. The beauty of Helen, the courage of Hector, the grief of Achilles for Patroclus, the meeting of Nausicaa and Odysseus, the magic of Circe, all these are now a part of the mythology of Europe. It matters not whether they were first written or handed down orally, whehter both are by the same poet, whether the poet was Homer--all these and many other unanswered questions are secondary to the perennial appeal of the narrative and the poetry. The form, the action and the words have had incalculable influence on the form, action and words of poetry ever since; the composition of the AENEID, the DIVINE COMEDY, PARADISE LOST, and many others, has been determined by the ILIAD and the ODYSSEY" (PMM).         Phytanthoza iconographia; sive Conspectus aliquot millium, tam indigenarum quam exoticarum, ex quatuor mundi partibus, longa annorum serie indefessoque studio.

Regensburg: Hieronymus Lentzen [volume IV: Heinrich Georg Neubauer], 1735-1737-1745. - Together 8 volumes. Folio (15 x 9 6/8 inches). 4 text volumes: 2 frontispiece mezzotint portraits printed in blue by Haid after Hirschmann of Weinmann and Bieler, frontispiece mezzotint in blue of Allegorical Flora by Haid after Baumgartner. Latin, French and German title-pages to index printed in red and black and bound at beginning of the first text-volume along with a foreword by Albrecht Haller in German, the German and Latin index itself bound in at the end of the last text volume, Latin and German title-pages in other volumes, all printed in red and black, letterpress interleaved with blank leaves, parallel text in double columns and indices in both languages. 4 plate volumes: Exceptionally fine folding engraved and mezzotint plate of Aloe Americana folio Mucronato printed in colours and finished by hand on two joined sheets, signed in ink manuscript by J. Haid and bound in between plates 62 and 63 in volume one, 1024 (of 1025) numbered engraved and mezzotint botanical plates by B. Seuter, J.E. Ridinger and Haid after G.D. Ehret, N. Asamin and others, all printed in colour and finished by hand, 15 of which double-page and folding, plate 982 with folding wing, additional plate from another work tipped in before plate 276 in volume II (without plate 525, pale marginal waterstaining to plates 1-26 and 480-498, waterstaining entering into plate images of 506-524, tiny repairs to versos of plates 90 and 443, plate 702 with tiny area of abrasion affecting the colour, preliminaries to second plate volume repaired along the top margin). Contemporary vellum over paste-board, blue edges, spines lettered in both contemporary and 20th-century manuscript (lightly soiled, extremities a little scuffed). Provenance: with the 19th-century lithographed library label of Friedrich Knapp with inventory number 1115 in manuscript, on the front paste-down of the first text volume, and removed from some others; with the engraved bookplates of Freiherr Ernst von Grunelius, Freifrau Anna von Grunelius née Gräfin von Bernstorff dated 1928, on the front paste-down of each volume; with the small ink library stamp of Dresden Central Art Library on the verso of each plate WITH THE VERY RARE LARGE FOLDING PLATE OF THE 'CENTURY PLANT', Aloe Americana folio Mucronato, so called because of the time it takes to flower (actually between 10 and 60 years, depending on the warmth of its growing location). There are two states of this plate: one is signed 'J.J. Haid f. excud' and appears to be a separately published plate; the other is unsigned, as is this example, but is HERE SIGNED IN MANUSCRIPT BY THE ARTIST. Only one copy of the separate plate and four copies (one incomplete) of Phytanthoza with this extra plate can be traced as selling at auction in the past 35 years. The copies at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, NHM, BL, Cambridge, Oxford and Wellcome are all without this plate. THE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST WORKS TO USE COLOUR-PRINTING FROM A SINGLE PLATE. The work was issued in parts, and in more than one issue, and the make-up of the preliminary leaves and indices is known to vary between copies. A comprehensive and beautiful record of known 18th-century flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Financed by Weimann, director of the oldest pharmacy in Regensburg, who commissioned amongst other artists the now celebrated Georg Ehret. It was his first major commission, but he was not credited, and only received half of his promised wages, on the grounds that he had only supplied about half of the 1,000 that Weinman was expecting of him. However, even at this early stage in his career, Ehret's style is easily identified, particularly in various aloes and cacti growing in distinctive pots and urns that is a feature of Ehret's work for his own "Plantae et papiliones rariores" (1748-1759). The "Phytanthoza ." was a very important influential book. Filippo Arena borrowed heavily from it for his "La Natura, e coltura de' fiori" (1767-1768), and the dutch edition wa [Attributes: First Edition]

South Prospect of Worksop Mannor, in the County of Nottingham

London: Engraved by Saml. & Natl. Buck and Published according to Act of Parliament, No. 1 Garden Court, Middle Temple, 1745. Engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild rippling and creasing, and a bit of minor mat burn. A spectacular panoramic view of Worksop Manor, the sprawling family seat of the Duke of Norfolk. Between 1720 and 1752, Samuel Buck and his younger brother Nathaniel toured England and Wales to record the castles and abbeys that scattered the countryside. Their detailed views provide an invaluable record of England's architectural antiquities, offering, in some cases, the only trace of ruined or lost buildings. Nathaniel and Samuel executed over 400 views in addition to 100 general views of English and Welsh cities. These detailed panoramas remain some of their most sought-after works, providing a fascinating view of England's most prominent cities. The Worksop Manor pictured here, a superb example of Elizabethan architecture, burnt down in 1761, not very long after the Buck's made this engraving.

As the title notes, this map includes a great deal of useful information: soundings, rocks, harbours, etc.: all of which is vital in an area where huge tides were the norm and rocks and sandbars make it one of the more dangerous places in the world for shipping. The inset of the harbour of Annapolis Royal continues the good work of the main map by including a large number of soundings in addition to depictions of the physical features. The present copy is an example of Kershaw's third state. Kershaw, Early Printed Maps of Canada III: 763 ; Phillips, A List of Maps of America , p. 578 and p. 585.

He collected material for a monumental work on Japan, but published only several brief essays during his lifetime. The Paris-based publisher Nepveu posthumously issued two volumes of selections from Titsingh's papers, translated into French: Cérémonies usitées en Japon pour les mariages et les funérailles (1819) and Mémoires et anecdotes de la dynastie regnante des Djogouns (1820). The present second edition combines these two works, leaving out some short essays. The first volume consists of essays on Japanese marriage ceremonies, the second is devoted to funeral ceremonies and some other feasts, and includes an account of "dosia", a powdered recreational and medicinal drug, while the final volume consists of a series of anecdotes about the shoguns. In very good condition, with some plates slightly tattered at the edges. The bindings show some light wear.

MAP OF BALTICS FROM THE ATLAS RUSSICUS"DVCATVVM ESTONIA et LIVONIAE, TABVLA cumcursu Fluvii Dwiniae', copper engraving published in St.Petersburg in 1745 by Joseph-Nicolas De l"Isle. Original hand colouring. Size: approx. 50 x 58 cm. From the Atlas Russicus, the first complete printed atlas of Russia.Joseph-NicolasDe l"Isle, younger brother of Guillaume De l"Isle, was invited by Peter the Great to survey the vast empire of Imperial Russia. The enlightened Tzar also invited De l"Isle to found a school of Astronomy in St. Petersburg, and although Peter the Great died a year before De l"Isle arrived in St. Petersburg in 1726, he was successful in achieving both of his Imperial commissions. Together with his partner Ivan Kirilov they founded the school of Astronomy and began the immense task of surveying the Russian Empire. Eventually the two men parted company and Kirilov decided to publish his own incomplete atlas of Russia in 1734, eleven years before De l"Isle"s French team finished its more comprehensive work.On his return to Paris in 1747, De l"Isle was able to construct his own observatory in the palace of Cluny, the same observatory later made famous by French astronomer Charles Messier.Price: € 650,-.

World map - Guillaume De L'Isle (Covens & Mortier), 1745.

"Mappe-Monde Dressé sur les Observations de Mrs. De L'Academie Royale des Sciences et quelques autres et sur les memoires les plus recens Par M. De L'Isle.' Copper engraving published by Covens & Mortier in Amsterdam 1745. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 50,8 x 63,5 cm.Guillaume De L"Isle"s world map was originally published in 1700 and then revised and republished throughout the 18th century by De L"Isle and by subsequent map publishers. Dutch publishers Covens & Mortier"s first version of De L"Isle"s map was produced in 1720 adding the seascape with ships on the horizon at the bottom decorated with a second cartouche in the shape of a sea monster with a mermaid, merman and dolphins. They issued a later edition of that map (shown here) in about 1745 with the additional subtitle "Nouvellement corrigée apres les dernieres Decouvertes faites par l"Academie de Petersbough.'The map consists of two central hemispheres, eastern and western, surrounded by four smaller polar projections. The right hand projections focus on the Northern Hemisphere while the left hand projections depict the Southern. At top center there is an elaborate decorative cartouche with various allegorical elements depicting the four great continents in female form, from top left: America, Europa, Africa, and Asia. The routes of a number of the most famous explorers of the major oceans of the world are shown from 1542 to approximately 1730, ending with the Russian voyages of Chirikov and Bering. Some of the more noteworthy features of the map includes the Russian explorations along the Northwestern coast of America, Aleutian islands shown in a semi-mythical configuration and attached to a highly conjectural Alaska; Edmund Halley"s sighting of Antarctic ice; Bouvet"s large Cap de la Circoncision; A depiction of the tracks of François Pelsaert"s route from Australia to Java; Carpentaria attached to New Guinea; Abel Tasman"s route, along with a depiction of Tasmania, distinctly separate from Australia. The map also retains one of the more curious peninsula depictions of California.Price: € 2.250,-.

A Collection of Voyages and Travels, Consisting of Authentic Writers in our own Tongue, which have not before been collected in English, or have only been abridged in other Collections. And continued with Others of Note, that have published Histories, Voyages, Travels, Journals or Discoveries in other Nations and Languages, relating to Any Part of the Continent of Asia, Africa, America, Europe, or the Islands thereof, from the earliest Account to the present Time. Digested According to the Parts of the World, to which they particularly relate...And with great Variety of Cuts, Prospects, Ruins, Maps, and Charts. Complied from the curious and valuable Library of the late Earl of Oxford...

London: Thomas Osborne, 1745. A little foxing of the preliminaries, fore-edge margin of the frontispiece to the first volume thumbed and a little chipped (now well laid down); yet an excellent set overall, later bookplates of Rodney Davidson.. Two volumes, folio, with 37 maps and 16 plates (many folding), and a letterpress folding table; a handsome set in the original panelled calf, decorated in gilt, sympathetically rebacked by Aquarius. One of the most handsome voyage compendiums of the eighteenth century, these two volumes are typically known as the 'Harleian' or 'Oxford' voyages', being compiled in some part from the unpublished manuscripts in the collection of the Earl of Oxford. Although separately published by Thomas Osborne at a later date, these volumes are generally considered the logical supplement to the travel anthology first published in 1704 by John and Awnsham Churchill. Comprising material not included in the first six volumes of Churchill's anthology (including Galvano, Drake, Le Maire, de Mont and numerous others), they form a natural compliment. The first volume principally comprises the Near and Middle East, while the second volume covers North America, India, East Asia and the East Indies and Africa. The Chinese content is substantial and includes Baudier's History of the Court of the King of China and Escalante's Account of the Empire of China. The well printed plates are derived from a range of sources, while the maps are principally after the work of Dutch cartographer Herman Moll. The frontispiece to the second volume is a magnificent folding map titled "A Chart of the East Indies", while Moll's famous map of the trade winds (originally printed for Knapton's voyages of Dampier) here re-appears as a considerably enlarged folding chart measuring 200 x 540 mm.Osborne, or a close associate, has contributed a disarmingly eloquent introductory discourse on travel, foreign government and the like, filled with choice aphorisms such as "in your travel you shall have great help to attain knowledge, which is not only the most excellent thing in man, but the very excellency of man".This set bears the armourial bookplates of Thomas Dampier, Bishop of Rochester and a veteran bibliophile and friend of Thomas Dibdin. Though no relative of the buccaneer of the same name, Thomas Dampier's library was reputed to be one of the finest in England at the time, and upon his decease was sold en-bloc to William Cavendish for the handsome sum of £10,000.A printer's error has resulted in jump in pagination between pp. 262-410 in the first volume. Although this is not noted in the bibliographies listed, comparison with two copies in American university libraries reveals the mis-pagination is consistent (accordingly, the set presently offered is complete).

Under Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode gick biblioteket in i en andra blomstringstid.

A Letter to a Member of Parliament, Concerning the Importance of our Sugar-Colonies to Great Britain. By a Gentleman, who resided many Years in the Island of Jamaica

London: Printed for J. Taylor, 1745. First and only edition, [2], 30pp., stitched as issued in blue paper wrappers, a very good copy. The author argues against putting an additional duty on sugar "which... would be a great hardship on the sugar-planter in the West Indies, and very little benefit to the revenue...". He sets out all the costs involved in producing sugar, such as the price of slaves and the cost of keeping them, the higher freight costs, insurance, cost of animals and contributions to the defence force. Finally, he states the advantages of the sugar trade for Britain and shows how an additional duty would be to the detriment of the trade. Goldsmiths'-Kress, 8163; Hanson, 5917; Sabin, 40397; ESTC gives the British Library as the only UK hold.

Leben Carl (Carls) des Zwölften Königs von Schweden mit Münzen und Kupfern, 3 Teile (in 3 Bänden).

Ohne Ort und Verlag, 1745 - 1751 (1755). Vollständiges Werk in 3 Bänden. Bd. I (Erster Theil): Erstes bis neuntes Hauptstück.
