        LA GERUSALEMME LIBERATA

Venezia: Stampata da G. Albrizzi, 1745. Hardcover. Remarkably Fresh and Clean Contemporary Copy of One of the Finest Illustrated Books of the Century. 457 x 305 mm (18 x 12"). 14 p.l. (including two frontispieces), 253, (i.e., 252), [1] leaves, followed by the final plate (complete). Pleasing contemporary marbled calf, raised bands, spine ornately gilt, red label. WITH 84 ELEGANT ENGRAVINGS: two frontispieces (one of Apollo and the muses, with angels flying in a tondo portrait of the author, the other of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, to whom the edition is dedicated), charming vignette on title page of Tasso riding on a half shell into a Venetian dock, welcomed by a female personification of Venice petting one of a pair of lions, 20 vignette initials, 20 large vignette headpieces, 20 vignette tailpieces (19 large and one smaller), 20 EXQUISITE LARGE PLATES, each within a decorative frame, and a final large plate showing Tasso and the publisher Albrizzi out in nature, all BY GIAMBATISTA PIAZZETTA. Ink stamp on front flyleaf of Starhemberg Family Library at Castle Eferding, Austria (see below). Cohen-de Ricci, p. 978; Brunet V, 666; Graesse VI, II, 33. Joints with slight wear, minor worming to top two spine compartments, covers with a bit of worming and a few marks, almost invisible repair to inner upper marginal corner of final plate and following blank, otherwise AN OUTSTANDING COPY, THE TEXT EXCEPTIONALLY FRESH, BRIGHT, AND CLEAN. This is a remarkably fresh and clean contemporary copy of one of the finest illustrated books of the 18th century. It is a wonderful oversized illustrated Venetian printing of a great Italian classic, which the normally reserved Graesse describes as a "magnificent edition in regards to the printing and the paper: the 20 plates and the headpieces by Piazzetta are beyond all praise." The engravings are highly detailed, romantic rococo illustrations of a major artist, Giambatista Piazzetta (1682-1754). Palluchini (as reported by Benezit) comments on the "subtle unity and vibrant luminosity" of Piazzetta's chiaroscuro, and he remarks that "Piazzetta's striking use of light, together with the bold compositions and handling seen in some of his works, make him an important precursor of Tiepolo." As for the author, Britannica says it as well as anyone: in his "Jerusalem Delivered," Tasso (1544-95) "aimed at ennobling the Italian epic style by preserving strict unity of plot and heightening poetic diction. He chose Virgil for his model, took the first crusade for [his] subject, [and] infused the fervor of religion into his conception of the hero Godfrey." But his inclination toward romance clashed with his original epical intentions, and the work became a classic early example of the poetry of sentiment. "This sentiment, refined, noble, natural, steeped in melancholy, exquisitely graceful, pathetically touching, breathes throughout the episodes of the 'Gerusalemme,' finds metrical expression in the languishing cadence of its mellifluous verse, and sustains the ideal life of those seductive heroines whose names were familiar as household words to all Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries." Unfortunately, the work, while still in manuscript, was condemned by contemporary critics on both religious and literary grounds, and the sensitive and conscientious author suffered a nervous breakdown, was later visited by a violent insanity, and was confined for seven years. When he was released, he discovered that his masterpiece had been published and that he was now famous. He was to have received the laurel crown with which Petrarch alone had been honored, but he died just before the presentation. Our copy comes from the collection of Starhemberg princes of Eferding, the best known of whom was Prince Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg, who as vice chancellor of Austria in the 1930s made a stand against the German takeover. The prince is featured in the historical novel, "The Sceptre," by Dorothy Jane Mills.

        Mappa Generalis Totius Imperii Russici

Impero. Dimensioni 965x555. A large map covering the full extent of the Russian Empire stretching from Finland to Kamchatka, published in the Atlas Russicus. Copper engraving, contemporary outline colour, in excellent condition. The Atlas Russicus was published in 1747 and contained twenty maps. De L?Isle's map was copied by many publishers, including the Italian Santini, whose map was later issued by Remondini. Joseph Nicholas De L?Isle (1688-1768), Guillaume?s brother, became a friend of Peter the Great and supplied him with information on the Russian Empire. He stayed in Russia for twenty-two years and was in charge of the Royal Observatory in St. Petersburg, returning to France in 1747, taking with him much of the material he had access to, particularly relating to explorations along the northern Pacific coasts of Russia and America, which he subsequently published. The Russian Academy of Sciences was created in 1724 in St Petersburg. It was not only intended to coordinate and produce science but also to aid in solutions to practical problems. Many foreign scientists were invited to participate. Joseph Nicolas de l' Isle was invited to head the department of geography and came in 1726. The making of the first atlas Russicus, not surprisingly considering the size of the country, took a long time. New bearings in trigonometry had to be taken all over the country. Existing cartographic material had to be obtained and analysed. Among the Russian scientists that worked on the atlas was Kirilow, the man who published the first map of Russia in 1734. Dimensioni 965x555. San Pietroburgo St. Petersbourg

Very unusual elongated map of the East coast of Canada. A beautiful map of Northeastern Canada, including Nova Scotia, Labrador and Newfoundland. This is the second state of the map originally drawn by Seutter and engraved by Lotter, with Lotter's imprint. The map's vertical format elongates the geography and distorts Newfoundland. The St. Lawrence River runs nearly north-south. It is very detailed, especially along the coastlines and rivers. Many place names, both European and Indian. At bottom right is a scene with several sailing ships. At top left is a huge decorative title cartouche featuring allegorical figures, Indian chiefs, explorers, mapmakers, a fleet of ships, fishermen and wildlife. Augsburg Augsburg 490 580

Legatura in tutta pelle coeva.

- Einband leicht berieben. - Sauberes, fleckenloses Exemplar auf starkem Papier. - Copy on thick rag paper. Report on a ten year sojourn of the French mathematician and astronomer (1701-1774). By appointment of the French Academy of Sciences to measure the arc of the meridian La Condamine travelled to Guayaquil under the direction of Louis Godin, together with Pierre Bourguer, Joseph de Jussieu and others. Condamine parted with his colleagues and hiked through the tropical forest discovering an Indian tribe who used rubber and described in his book for the first time the use of chinin to fight cholera. After arriving in Quito, he proceeded to measure the arc of the meridian, thus contributing to the definition of the original meter. The expedition was largely indebted and delayed, so Condamine chose to follow the Amazonas. In February 1745 he reached, as the second European after Francisco de Orellano in 1544, the estuary of the Amazon River. He described for the first time the existence of indigenous poisons used for their arrows and proposed the first map of the Amazon River. His report was read on April 28th 1745 in the Academy and the book was successfully published. Binding slightly worn. Clean, immaculate copy on heavy paper.

INSTRUCTIONS TO SIR PAUL METHUEN, HIS MAJESTY'S AMBASSADOR IN SPAIN 1717, UPON WHICH THE TREATY OF MADRID DEC. 14, 1715, SIGNED BY MR. BUB, WAS FOUNDED. THIS PAPER WAS DRAWN BY THE RIGHT HONBLE. HORATIO WALPOLE, ESQ., THEN COMMIS. TO MY LORD TOWNSHEND AT THAT TIME SOLE SECRETARY OF STATE [manuscript title]

[Np. nd, but ca. 1745].. 17pp. Folio. Loose gatherings. Light vertical crease. Near fine. In a cloth and marbled boards clamshell case. A later copy of the instructions given in 1715 to Ambassador to Spain Sir Paul Methuen, in order to negotiate a commercial treaty with that nation, which lists in fifteen detailed sections the possible positions the Spanish negotiators might take and Methuen's possible answers to them. Where, or even if, there is a 1715 original, is unknown to us. The Treaty of Madrid was signed Dec. 14, 1715, after the initial Treaty of Utrecht, signed in 1713. Methuen began negotiations, but George Bubb closed and signed the treaty on behalf of England. "George Bubb, afterwards celebrated as George Bubb Dodington, Methuen's successor at Madrid, negotiated a new commercial treaty...to the lively satisfaction of the English trading classes. By it duties on commerce in the two countries were reduced to the status quo of the reign of Charles II (of Spain), and each contracting party conceded to the other the privileges of the most favored nation, a clause highly injurious to the French woolen manufacture" - Hunt & Poole. One of the articles specifically mentions indigo and other products from the West Indies, used in the British woolen manufacture. This document was drawn up by Horatio Walpole, 1st Baron Walpole of Wolverton (1678-1757) several years later (the watermark in the paper dates to around 1745), and appears to be, in some capacity, official. Walpole was a diplomat and politician, brother of the powerful Prime Minister and the uncle of the author Horace Walpole. William Hunt & Reginald L. On an old mount, broadside previously folded and repaired with slight. loss of a few letters, not affecting sense or legibility. A. triangular section to the upper right blank margin lost & supplied. Charles best known today as the instigator/leader of the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745, in his effort to restore an absolute monarchy to the United Kingdom, which culminated in defeat at the Battle of Culloden, essentially signaling the end of the Jacobite cause. This broadside, issued at the apex of the rebellion, highlights the extent of Charles' belief in his claim to the throne, for in it he declares the parliament at London to lack legitimacy; next, he brands traitor & rebel all who attend said parliament; and finally, he declares the "pretended union of these Kingdoms now at an End." A very rare survivor of this tumultous time of British history, this broadside is known in only 6 copies [per ESTC], none on this side of the pond. . Large headpiece [4.3 cm x 15 cm]. Large initial capital letter 'W'.

Thesaurus Musicus: A Collection of Two, Three, and Four Part Songs, Several of Them Never Before Printed, To Which Are Added Some Choice Dialogues

John Simpson, London, 1745. Second Edition. Hardcover (Half Leather). Very Good Condition. Half calf over marbled boards, worn but intact. Lacking the front endpaper, but otherwise complete in two volumes with a separate title and pagination. The first edition, entitled Harmonia Anglicana, was published the year before in one volume - according to Fuld there is only one known copy in the Library of Congress. The interest in the two arises from the printings and revisions of the song known as "God Save the King", printed here as "A Loyal Song". The version here is in three stanzas (though a fourth is added neatly in an early hand) and includes the addition of the "George" to king (pretender to the throne "Bonnie Prince Charlie" had landed in Scotland in July 1745, making "King" alone ambiguous. Attractively printed, slight foxing and discoloration here and there, but generally clean; a bit of soiling to the end of volume 2 and a small paper tear in the margin. A few small, neat additions in an early hand. Trimmed a little close in spots, losing the last sentence of the advertisement at the base of the second title, but no other text. 77, 80pp. ref: Fuld, The Book of World-Famous Music: Classical, Popular, and Folk Music. pages 249-250.         A View in Lyme Park (With that extraordinary Custom of driving the Stags;) the property of Peter Legh Esqr

Aug. 27 1745. Copper engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild creasing, and a few skillfully repaired small tears in the margins. 15 3/8 x 21 3/8 inches. 17 1/8 x 23 1/8 inches. A picturesque view of Lyme Park in Cheshire, the ancestral estate of the Legh family, after the celebrated landscape artist Smith of Derby. This beautifully rendered print is one of 23 plates Vivares engraved after Smith. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, a trend developed among English artists and printmakers who sought to visually record the natural beauty of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those armchair travelers who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. One of the earliest and most influential landscape artists to begin this trend was Thomas Smith who came to be known as "Smith of Derby." Smith traveled the north of England painting famous houses and beautiful views. He was one of the first artists to depict wild landscape scenes, which became immensely fashionable with the development of the "picturesque landscape" towards the end of the century. Smith's paintings not only captured the English countryside at the onset of the Industrial Revolution, but also recorded the activities of visiting tourists and local inhabitants. These works capture a period in England's history, which was forever changed by the wheels of progress. Before the mills and the factories came to dominate the landscape of northern England, Smith depicted its wild beauty and breathtaking scenery. This beautiful view of the bucolic scenery of Lyme Park is a lovely example of Smith's superior work. As the title states, the practice of driving the stags through what was called "Stag Pond" each year at Midsummer was indeed extraordinary. There were large herds of red deer and wild cattle on the property, and at some point it became traditional to drive the deer around the park, ending with the swim through the pond. The last stag has just entered the water and two of the first in line are having a brief skirmish (though it looks rather like a dance). We have not yet discovered the purpose of the summer swim. THE FIRST PRINTED ATLAS OF RUSSIA, AND ONE OF PETER THE GREAT'S MOST SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS First edition of Delisle's "Atlas russicus.", or, in German "Russischer Atlas..." In commissioning this great Atlas De L'isle Russia's greatest reforming Tzar, Peter the Great made a significant contribution to the modernization of his vast empire of Imperial Russia. The enlightened Tzar also invited De L'isle to found a school of Astronomy in St. Petersburg, and although Peter the Great died a year before De L'isle arrived in St. Petersburg in 1726, he was successful in achieving both of his Imperial commissions. Together with his partner Ivan Kirilov they founded the school of Astronomy and began the immense task of surveying the Russian Empire. Eventually the two men parted company and Kirilov decided to publish his own incomplete atlas of Russia in 1734, eleven years before Deslis French team finished its more comprehensive work. Delisle's atlas contained virtually every map of Russia issued by the Academy of Sciences and its institutional predecessor, Akademia Nauk, up to and including 1745. On his return to Paris in 1747, Delisle was able to construct his own observatory in the palace of Cluny, the same observatory later made famous by French astronomer Charles Messier. Ralph E.         Les amours pastorals de Daphnis et Chloé

[n.p.,Paris:] 1745 Full crimson morocco, gilt-ruled covers, gilt spine, tooled in compartments with floral decorations. Gilt green morocco doublures, green silk free endleaves, marbled paper leaves at front ang back. All edges gilt. . Small octavo. Title-page in black and red. Engraved title (dated 1717), twenty-five engraved plates (eleven folding), and eight head-pieces, tailpieces and vignettes. The plates were engraved by Benoit Audran after designs by Philippe d;'Orleans. A beautiful, though unsigned, binding, in fine condition, in morocco-tipped slipcase. The Philippe d'Orléans (1674-1723) plates originally appeared in 1718. Another edition appeared in 1731, in which the plates may or may not have been reengraved. Ray in his Art of the French Illustrated Book discusses the 1745 edition, which appeared in two formats, a small quarto and an octavo format. Ray says the plates were reengraved for the small quarto format, in order to provide an improved setting for the Regent's plates. He does not say whether the plates were reengraved for the octavo edition. Also, Ray describes twenty-eight plates (thirteen folding), rather than the twenty-five here, but only five vignettes, where our copy has eight. The 1718, 1731 and 1745 editions are all uncommon.

The Itinerary of John Leland the Antiquary. In Nine Volumes. The Second Edition: Collated and Improved from the Original MS. With the Addition Also of a General Index

Oxford: Printed at the Theatre; for James Fletcher and Joseph Potte 1745-4 The greatly revised second edition of the works of John Leland first published in 1710. Original marbled boards with vellum backstrips. . Nine volumes, octavo in fours. . With a large, folding copper-engraved plate in Volume VIII. Engrqaved vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre on title-page of Volume I. Spines a bit rubbed, with hand-lettering mostly worn off, a few hinges with minor spilits. Minor wear to covers. A remarkably fine, uncut set. Leland (1506?-1552) has been called "the father of English local history." He established the county as the basic unit for studying the local history of England. He was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, All Souls College, Oxford, and in Paris, and at different times had the patronage of Thomas Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell. He was appointed prebendary of Wilton Abbey in 1535 and received two adjacent benefices. In 1533 he was apparently entrusted by the kind with a document which authorized him to examine the libraries of all the religious houses in England, and he made numerous lists of significant books in these libraries, for the most part before they were dissolved. He subsequently made many journeys, including five major itineraries to various regions of Britain, and on these he kept notebooks, writing down information he gleaned from personal observation, from books, charters, and oral sources. Though Leland's Itineraries remained unpublished until the eighteenth century, they provided important source material for Camden's Britannia (1586) and many other works. His other works included Latin poetry, a treatise on King Arthur, the "New Year's Gift" (a letter addressed to Henry VIII), a biographical dictionary of famous British authors, and others.
