La Secchia Rapita. Poema Eroicomico... -

Modena, Soliani, 1744.In - 4. Antiporta, ritratto a p. pag., 12 tavv. f.t. Gamba 2097: «Stimatissima edizione». Vinciana, Aut. Ital. del '600, 3018: «... la migliore edizione della Secchia»

        Methodus invenieni Lineas Curvas

Lausanne & Geneva 1744 - Euler, Leonhard (1707-1783). Methodus inveniendi lineas curvas maximi minimive proprietate gaudentes, sive solutio problematis isoperimetrici latissimo sensu accepti. 4to. [2], 322, [2]pp. 5 folding engraved plates. Lausanne & Geneva: Marc-Michel Bousquet & Compagnie, 1744. 248 x 199 mm. Half mottled calf, gilt spine, marbled boards c. 1744, rubbed, some wear at extremities and corners, bookplate removed from inside front cover. Minor foxing and toning, but very good. From the library of Pietro Riccardi (1828-98), historian and bibliographer of mathematics, with his library bookplate on the front endpaper.First Edition. With the publication of this work, the calculus of variations came into being as a new branch of mathematics. Euler was the first to formulate the principal problems of the calculus of variations and to create general methods for their solution. His work in the Methodus was cumbersome by modern standards (the calculus of variations as we know it is the work of Lagrange), but it yielded simple and elegant formulae applicable to a large variety of problems. He introduced (using different terminology) the concepts of function and variation, distinguished between problems of absolute and relative extrema, and deduced the differential equation that now bears his name.         La Secchia Rapita

1744. TASSONI, Alessandro. La Secchia Rapita, poema eroicomico... lx, 92, 489 pp., 1 f. (errata). With an engraved allegorical frontispiece by Zucchi after Villani, title-page in red and black, title vignette by Lepedi after Manfredi, engraved portrait by Lepidi after Bonvicini, 12 full-page plates, folding genealogical table of the Tassoni family, 2 facsimiles of Tassoni's handwriting, 2 folding maps, 10 engraved tailpieces, final leaf with woodcut of the "Tower of the City of Modena." 4to., 267 x 203 mm, bound in contemporary Italian vellum. Modena: Bartolommeo Soliani, 1744. |~| |~| |~| |~| |~| |~| Precious Copy Printed on Blue Paper. Most Important Edition of Tassoni's La Secchia Rapita , called by Gamba "stimmatissima edizione" and "belle édition" by Brunet. Two issues were evidently published in 1744, a quarto edition and an octavo edition. Rossi, in his bibliography of 17th-century Italian authors, states that a few copies of this quarto issue exist with the plates printed in blue ink; RLIN lists both issues, but does not mention any copy with the plates in blue, as here. This edition contains notes and a biography by two leading scholars of the eighteenth century, Gaspare Salviani and Lodovico Muratori. Tassoni (1565-1635) was a prolific author whose reputation rests mainly on the above satirical work, loosely translated as "the captured bucket" (in reference to the petty warfare between Modena and Bologna). "The poem is pervaded by an exuberant, satirical, and often brillaint humor... There are passages in which the humor is sustained and cumulative, and others in which an apparent seriousness finds its climate in a sudden hilarious absurdity" (Wilkins, Italian Literature , pp. 298-9). Fine copy; very rare on blue paper. PROVENANCE: Marco di Carrobio, with his bookplate. Rossi 3018. Gamba 2097. Brunet V, 675.

South Afr. Bibl. I, p. 74; STCN (1 copy); Tiele Bibl. 42. Rare third, enlarged Dutch edition of accounts of Anson's ill-fated Pacific privateering voyage, first published in English in 1744. The objective of the expedition was to plunder the Spanish possessions along the Pacific coast of South America and to attack Panama. The expedition, fitted out with a squadron of five men-of-war and one sloop, rounded Cape Horn in March 1741, in the worst of seasons; only three ships reached the Jean Fernandez islands in June. Moreover, scurvy, cold and privation had killed a considerable number of the crewmembers of the reaming ships. Nevertheless, Anson took some small prizes before he decided to return home across the Pacific, his squadron now reduced to the two ships, Centurion and Gloucester. But before the ships could reach the Mariana Islands, the Gloucester was lost too. With one ship left, Anson was still determined to take a Manila galleon, which he finally did in June 1743, taking the Nuestra Señora de Covadonga, carrying 1,313,843 pieces of eight and 35,682 ounces of virgin silver.Owner's entry in blue ink on pastedown and library stamp on last page, both struck through. One plate with small tear, slightly browned throughout, one leaf with tear repaired, new free endleaf at front. Binding worn, front joint cracked, front board with a small hole, some restorations. A rare edition of an popular Pacific voyage.

        Raccolta di Varie Favole delineate

1744. FOSSATI, Giorgio. Six volumes in two. [16], 44; [16], 48; [8], 76; [8], 59; [8], 59; [8], 36 pp. Title-pages in vol. I with engraved ornamental borders printed in red. Illustrated with 3 engraved headpieces and 216 engraved plates, printed in red, green, blue, brown and black. 4to., 295 x 205 mm, bound in full Venetian contemporary vellum boards. Venice: Carlo Pecora, 1744. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of one of the most sought-after Venetian eighteenth-century colour-printed works. The two hundred plus engravings are printed in the following colour inks: blue, olive green, sepia, madder rose, chocolate brown, yellow brown, Payne's grey, reddish brown, cadmium orange, black and blue-grey. This scarce Venetian edition of classical fables with coloured engravings was designed and executed by the architect Giorgio Fossati. Birds, beasts, plants and humans are placed in Venetian pastoral or architectural settings. The latter are especially noteworthy and reveal the practiced hand and eye of their author; in plate XXXIII ("The Gentleman and the Ape") the grand illusionistic stage setting recalls the work of the Bibiena. The Swiss-born Giorgio Fossati (1705-1785), designer of the facade of the Scuola and church of San Rocco in Venice, was an important promulgator of architectural history, theory, and practice through his many sumptuous publications, including new editions of Vignola, Palladio, and Félibien. Fossati specialized in books with illustrations printed in colour. The colour-technique he employed involved no overprinting or mixing, just pure colour printed on heavy white Italian paper giving his books an extravagant Venetian character. Copies of the Favole that were bound in six volumes sometimes manifest additional engraved title-pages preceding each volume of text; the present copy, like that of the Spencer Collection (NYPL) has the two engraved title-pages preceding vol. I. In our copy the allegorical explications of the fables in the first two volumes (8 + 8 pp.) are bound before their respective texts. Fine copies in contemporary Venetian bindings are very rare on the market. This is a fresh, fine and attractive copy in its contemporary Venetian binding. PROVENANCE: With later bookplate bearing a crossed monogram "L.L." surrounded in each corner by the emblem of medicine (a serpent entwining the staff of Asclepius). Cohen-Ricci 410. Lewine 192.         PAMELA, ou la vertu recompensée

New edition, illustrated with 32 figures by Punt and title vignette repeated on 4 volumes. Title pages in red and black. First edition, it seems, has to be fully illustrated, previous editions showed only four headpieces, however it should be noted that the figures are dated 1742 The mention of third edition refers only Dutch editions is therefore not significant. Translation of the Abbe Prevost and Aubert de la Chesnaye Hood.Full Sheepskin brown vintage. Back tooled raised. Part of title and volume number in red morocco. Head cover of Volume I pulled out. Lack head of Volume II. Lack the upper jaw tail of Volume I. Headgear tail missing part to Volume III. Corners bumped. Friction. Pearses foxing.Pamela was a real twist in the world of literature and was a resounding success all over Europe. Its main merit is likely to have given birth not only epistolary novel (Rousseau) but Fielding gave two satirical suites: The Adventures of Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones. We know that Diderot raved about this novel. Pamela is a novel of manners and romance novel whose imprint on the literature of the eighteenth is permanent and indelible. It is often regarded as the first novel of manners bourgeois and this move places the action of the aristocracy to the bourgeoisie had an enormous impact. H.Goerke, Die Beziehungen Japans zur europäischen Medizin im 18.Jhdt. J.Jap.Soc.Med.Hist. - - Foundation of western Medicine in Japan! - The rare Latin edition printed in Amsterdam of "Die Anatomische Tabellen". The Compendium became very well known and wide-spread, and it was the first anatomical compendium of modern medicine (v. Goecke). The first edition is extremely rare, since it was only designed for the use of Kulmus' students. - The "Anatomische Tabellen" were even translated into Japanese. After the Japanese physicians MAYENO RYOTAKU (1723-1804), GENPAKU SUGITA (1733-1817), and JUN'AN NAKAGAWA (1739-1786) had convinced themselves the 4th of March 1771 in Kotsukappara, near Edo, by the dissection of an executed, about 50 years old Japanese woman, Aocha-Baba (Mother Green Tea), that those "Tabellen" presented the true anatomical relations, thus demonstrated that anatomy as it had been taught in Japan up to that time was false. - "The book in no way differed from what we saw before us. If we could translate parts of this Taheru Anatomia we could gain a clear understanding entirely and advance medicine beyond its present level." Genpaku Sugita, Rangaku katohajime (1815). - So Kaitai Shinsho (New Book on Human Dissections) was the first complete translation of a medical work which originated on a German text. It represented an empirical approach to nature, which was undermining the prestige of Chinese medicine in Japan. It took about 4 years and eleven attempts to translate it, and was edited by GENPAKU SUGITA in 1774. The translator MAYENO RYOTAKU didn't sign it because of his extreme modesty. - -cf. Hirsch-H.         An Introduction to the Study of Philosophy: Exhibiting a General view of all the Arts and Sciences, for the use of pupils. With a Catalogue of some of the most valuable authors, necessary to be read, in order to instruct them in a thorough Knowledge of each of them

London: J. Rivington. This is the original edition bound in late 19th century boards. . London, J. Rivington, 1744. 8°. VI, 26 pages. This is the original edition bound in late 19th century boards. The Reverend Doctor Samuel Johnson (October 14, 1696 ?- January 6, 1772) was a clergyman, educator, and philosopher in colonial British North America. He was a major proponent of both Anglicanism and the philosophy of George Berkeley in the colonies, and served as the first president of the Anglican King's College (the predecessor to today's Columbia University). Born in Guilford, Connecticut, he graduated from the Collegiate School (now Yale University) in 1716. Johnson first became Congregationalist minister of a church in West Haven, but influenced by the writings of John Locke and Isaac Newton, he and a group of other Collegiate School graduates began to express doubt in the legitimacy of their Congregational ordination. As a result, Johnson left the colony in order to seek ordination in the Church of England. Upon his return to Connecticut, he opened the first Anglican church in the colony at Stratford in 1724 and strenuously polemicized, under the auspices of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, against both the Congregationalists of New England and the new evangelical outburst occasioned by popular preacher George Whitefield and the Great Awakening he unleashed. He remained in Stratford until 1754, when the vestrymen of the Anglican Trinity Church in New York City considered him the logical choice to serve as after the first president of King's College. Though reluctant to leave his family in Connecticut and fearing the smallpox epidemics he considered endemic of urban life, Johnson ultimately took up the post, assisting in behind-the-scenes maneuverings to ensure the college would be explicitly Anglican, rather than nonsectarian. In the early years of the institution, Johnson was the sole instructor, primarily teaching classics and philosophy. His first class consisted of eight boys he considered "woefully unprepared". Owing to his fear of smallpox, of which his son William had died while in England, Johnson was frequently absent from the city, and increasingly shared his teaching responsibilities. When his wife died of smallpox, Johnson began to seek a means to leave his post, although the Governors of King's College and the Archbishop of Canterbury had already maneuvered to replace him with the Oxford-trained minister Myles Cooper. Johnson left the post in 1763 and returned to his ministry at Stratford, where he died. Johnson was the father of William Samuel Johnson, a Founding Father of the United States who attended the United States Constitutional Convention. He followed his father's footsteps, attending Yale and becoming president of Columbia College. Johnson was among the few colonial Americans whose cultural and intellectual achievements garnered notice in Great Britain. He was a friend of and often corresponded with the Irish philosopher George Berkeley, and became the chief promoter of his philosophy of immaterialism in colonial America. In 1731 Johnson published his Elementa Philosophica (eng. Compendium of Logic and Metaphysics), and in 1746 his Ethica (eng. System of Morality). In 1752, Benjamin Franklin printed both in a single, expanded volume, a third edition of which appeared in 1754 with Johnson's corrections and an introduction by Dr. William Smith, provost of the College of Philadelphia. In 1757 a London publisher printed his English and Hebrew Grammar, to which was appended a "Synopsis of all the Parts of Learning". (Wikipedia)

Newton's "Opuscula Mathematica [.]" covers many different treatises by Isaac Newton, from his mathematical works and optical lectures, which were greatly influential and laid the basis for modern science, to his philological essays on history and theology. Thus the work presents several of his most influential texts. The three volumes of "Opuscula Mathematica" are part of a hybrid set of in all 8 volumes of the first collected works of Isaac Newton. The hybrid set was published between 1739-1761 and also consists of "Geneva Principia" , 3 vols. (1739-42), "Opticks" (1740) and "Arithmatica Universalis" (1761), but the three volumes of "Opuscula Mathematica" are usually found separate. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Modern Cook: Containing Instructions for Preparing and Ordering Public Entertainments for the Tables of Princes, Ambassadors, Noblemen and Magistrates

London: Thomas Osborne, 1744. Third Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Full contemporary mottled calf, rebacked. Cagle 803a (the 1736 ed.), Originally published in English in 1733 (La Chapelle had been poached by Lord Chesterfield and brought to London), it survived early cries of plagarism from Massialot (of which it is guilty) to become one of the lasting contributions to 18th century cuisine in both English and French - his is one of the first books where one can recognizably trace recipes through to the present day. It is also the first to suggest cutting green beans lengthwise ("French style") and, perhaps straining the limits of credulity to provide something novel for the English palate, there is a recipe for a tea flavored custard.         STATUTUM ET ORDINES VEN. COLLEGII DD. RATIONATORUM MEDIOLANI.

La prima ediz., dedicata all??Exc. (Milano, 1898), pp. 74 - 76. Esempl. molto ben conservato, di grande rarità.
