Doctor Franklin & Spain: The Unknown HIstory

Santa Fé: The Press at the Palace of the Governors, (1026). 4to. 59pp. plus colophon. One of 80 numbered copies. Printed letterpress at the Palace Press by Tom Leech and James Bourland on handmade wove Spanish paper from the Garza Paper Mill. The typeface is digital Bodoni Old Face; Franklin himself praised Bodoni's' Essay on Type as "one of the most beautiful..." Frontispiece portrait of Franklin based on a painting of Franklin by his French neighbor, Anne-Rosalie Bocquet Filleul. Finely bound by Priscilla Spitler in half brown morocco, deep blue leather lettering label, gilt, and with sides of paper marbled by Tom Leech. Map endpaper of the hemispheres taken from Seale's 1744 atlas and show the extent of Spanish interest in the western hemisphere. Illustrated with a drawing of Franklin's armonica (glass harmonica), which is a major player in this story. Also illustrated with photographic reproductions of letters relating to the story. Dr. Franklin, an inventor of may things, counted the glass harmonica among his achievements. When he found out through the Spanish Ambassador to France that the King of Spain wanted one for the youngest prince, Franklin supplied it. And thus began the story of Franklin, the Spanish Crown, and the surreptitious financing of parts of the American Revolution, a story which is just now coming to light, after all these years, to be told by Dr. Chavez more fully in the near future. A magnificent addition to the fine work of the Palace Press. It is in fine, as new condition, in the publisher's custom box. Fine.

Poems attempted in the style of Milton. By Mr. John Philips, Student of Christ-Church, Oxon. With his life by Dr Sewell

London: printed for E. Curll, in Covent-Garden, , MDCCXLIV. [1744]. Full Calf. Fine. 12mo: xxx,42;72pp, with frontispiece portrait of the poet, frontispiece to the separately paginated Cyder, woodcut head- and tailpieces. Contemporary speckled calf, covers framed with double fillets in gilt, spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt, recent red morocco lettering piece gilt, edges speckled red. A Fine—indeed exceptional—copy. Foxon, p. 570. Tenth Edition (but first under this title), collecting The Splendid Shilling; Blenheim, An Ode (in Latin and English), and, most importantly, Cyder—A Poem in Two Books (Fourth Edition, printed for J. and R. Tonson, and S. Draper, 1744). Many of Philips's poems, including his first, the Splendid Shilling (which The Tatler commended as "the finest Burlesque Poem in the British Language"), were composed in Miltonic blank verse. "Philips's greatest poem, the two-book georgic Cyder (1708), begun at Oxford, celebrates his native land (and in particular Herefordshire) with a combination of accurate knowledge of apples and cider making and a ‘sketch of our National History.' The botanist Philip Miller told [Dr.] Johnson that ‘there were many books written on the same subject in prose, which do not contain so much truth as that poem.' . . . Philips taught Pope, who drew on Cyder in Windsor Forest, how to use Paradise Lost for un-Miltonic purposes, and to suggest that paradise might still be found in England's green and pleasant land."         Acajou et Zirphile conte [Ensemble] Histoire du prince Titi A R EDITION ORIGINALE

A Minutie|[Paris] ; |à Bruxelles: S.n. ;|ChezFrançois Foppens, 1744. Fine. S.n. ; ChezFrançois Foppens, A Minutie [Paris] ; à Bruxelles 1744 - 1736, In-12 (9x16,5cm), (14) 161pp. ; 274pp., 2 ouvrages en un volume relié. - This edition of Duclos appeared following the first in-4 with planks Boucher, it is rare. The second story of Saint Hyacynthe is in first edition.

[Madrid, 1744. 6 leaves. Folio. Dbd. Contemporary manuscript annotations on top of first page and in margins of text. Old folds. Moderate dampstaining in top margins. A good copy. A rare printed decree by Philip V, King of Spain, regarding the reconstruction of the Casa de Moneda in Santiago following the earthquake that devastated that city in 1730. Detailed orders concerning the construction and operation of the Casa de Moneda and related matters regarding the processing of gold are also provided. It is noted that the reconstruction of the Santiago mint will ensure that the gold will not need to be sent to Lima for processing, as was the case after the earthquake. Dated Oct. 1, 1743, the decree was printed in Madrid for distribution to officials in the Council of the Indies and in Santiago. A printed note (dated Madrid, March 22, 1744) at the bottom of the text indicates that the text is a copy of the original which remains with the Secretary of Peru. A rare printed decree regarding the institution of the Casa de Moneda in Santiago. Not in EUROPEAN AMERICANA. OCLC records only a single copy, at the Chilean National Library. MEDINA (BHC) 365.         PAMELA ou la vertu recompensée

à Amsterdam: Aux dépens de la Compagnie, 1744. Fine. Aux dépens de la Compagnie, à Amsterdam 1744, 4 tomes en 4 Vol. in 12 (9,5x16,2cm), (26) 480pp. et (2) 491pp. et (6) 635pp. et (2) 646pp., relié. - New edition, illustrated with 32 figures by Punt and title vignette repeated on 4 volumes. Title pages in red and black. First edition, it seems, has to be fully illustrated, previous editions showed only four headpieces, however it should be noted that the figures are dated 1742 The mention of third edition refers only Dutch editions is therefore not significant. Translation of the Abbe Prevost and Aubert de la Chesnaye Hood. Full Sheepskin brown vintage. Back tooled raised. Part of title and volume number in red morocco. Head cover of Volume I pulled out. Lack head of Volume II. Lack the upper jaw tail of Volume I. Headgear tail missing part to Volume III. Corners bumped. Friction. Pearses foxing. Pamela was a real twist in the world of literature and was a resounding success all over Europe. Its main merit is likely to have given birth not only epistolary novel (Rousseau) but Fielding gave two satirical suites: The Adventures of Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones. We know that Diderot raved about this novel. Pamela is a novel of manners and romance novel whose imprint on the literature of the eighteenth is permanent and indelible. It is often regarded as the first novel of manners bourgeois and this move places the action of the aristocracy to the bourgeoisie had an enormous impact. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

Birch's collection became the standard academic edition of Boyle's work for more than two centuries. Boyle's contribution to modern science cannot be understated. This work contains Boyle's most notable experiments that laid the foundation of modern chemistry, including: Boyle's Law; The Properties of Air and the Vacuum; the rejection of Aristotle and Paracelsus's views on matter in favor of a modern concept of elements, compounds and mixtures; atoms as the basis of matter; heat as mechanical movement; a continuation of Francis Bacon's principles of rational based experimental science; as well as many other experiments. Specifically, the works include: Boyle's air pressure experiment No. 17 in Spring of the Air showing a Torricellian apparatus and an air pump; Experiments Physio-Mechanical, Touching the Spring of the Air and its Effects, 1662, Boyle's Law; The Description of the Pneumatick Engin, and it's Use; etc. Fulton 240. This history of the lives and amours of the Empresses and consorts to the first 12 Caesars was compiled by the French historian Jacques Roergas de Serviez (1679-1727). See Miriam Elizabeth Burstein, "Unstoried in History: Early Histories of Women (1652-1902) in the Huntington Library Collections" (in: The Huntington Library Quarterly, Vol. 64, No. 3/4 [2001], p. 472). * An outstanding set of this scarce work. PROVENANCE: D.F. de GELAS DE VOISINS D'AMBRES (1686-1762), COMTE DE LAUTREC, MARECHAL DE FRANCE, with his armorial bookplate in each volume.

Four sheet wall map drawn by Chiesa and Gambarini, etched by Carlo Nolli & Giovan Battista Piranesi. Pope Benedict XIV commissioned engineers Andrea Chiesa and Bernardo Gamberini to prepare a survey of the full course of the Tiber River in order to anticipate problems of flooding and to explore the possibilities for navigation. In addition to the narrative which details this information, there are two maps. The smaller of the maps shows a more detailed view of the Tiber as it passes through Rome. The larger of the two maps, engraved by Giambattista Nolli, is included in four contiguous plates. It includes two vignettes of ruins and many profiles of altitudes of the river. There are also small views of several bridges and other features such as Ponte Molle, Ponte Sant'Angelo with Castel Sant'Angelo, Ponte dei Quattro Capi and Ponte Ferraro. It was only in 1939, that Lamerberto Donati identified that these unsigned engravings in the the P

Autograph Letter Signed, to Edward Bromfield sending his thanks to Bromfield for giving an apprenticeship to his son and to consenting to his son's marriage to Bromfield's daughter. Also sending best wishes to the young couple

Andover, [Massachsetts], 1744. 3 pp text, 1 p. address, on one leaf. 1 vols. 6-3/8" x 8". Slightly chipped, small portion lacking (due to removal of seal) with no loss of text, customary browning, else fine. 3 pp text, 1 p. address, on one leaf. 1 vols. 6-3/8" x 8" Phillips was the minister of the parish of South Andover for 60 years (until his death in 1771), and author of an "Elegy" (1718) and numerous religious treatises and occasional sermons. His son, John, became a merchant in Exeter, NH, and a member of the New Hampshire council for several years and a liberal benefactor of Princeton and Dartmouth. His writing is a fine example of the lavish, convoluted prose (complete with 3 footnotes!) of 17th century élite Americans, to wit: "I would therefore take leave to give thanks to your self (sir) and to Madam also your worthy consort, for your many past kindnesses (too many to be now recited) to my son, during the time of his apprenticeship; and more especially, for your last & greatest, since the Expiration of the Term, viz. in giving him your Eldest Daughter in marriage, and thereby acknowledging him for a son."

The Shepherd of Banbury's Rules to Judge of the Changes of the Weather, Grounded on Forty Years Experience: To which is Added a Rational Account of the Causes of such Alterations, the Nature of the Wind, Rain, Snow…

      W. Bickerton,, London: 1744 - 8vo, later cloth backed marbled boards, [2], viii, 64 pp. Binding worn, splitting at joins with some tears on the spine, normal aging, but internally very good. This work was first published in 1670 as "The Shepherd's Legacy." Although it is unsure who the shepherd of Branbury was, it is possible that it was John Claridge. The OCLC repeating from the introduction of G.H.T. Kimble indicates that in the 1946 edition, the author refers to himself as John in the original edition. It is believed that in the present edition, additions have been made anonymously by John Campbell (ESTC T12185). Claridge talks about the benefits of understanding the weather, and describes some of the tools that are used for that purpose in his introduction, including the value of observation. However, the main purpose of his work is to share the rules that help predict the weather, such as, small and round clouds will yield fair weather for two or three days, or the chance of rain when the Moon is new.
