Castelli, e Ponti Con alcune ingegnose pratiche, e con la descrizione del trasporto dell' obelisco Vaticano, e di altri del cavaliere Domenico Fontana.

Rome: Niccolò and Marco Pagliarini, 1743 - Large folio (480 x 362 mm). Contemporary vellum, red morocco spine label. Binding a little soiled and worn, with neat repairs to corners, some spotting and dampstaining, a good copy. Engraved portrait, 54 engraved plates (4 double-page). Title-page, preface and explanatory text for plates in Italian and Latin. First edition of this fundamental work for the history of the restoration and maintenance of St Peter's Fabbrica and for an understanding of early building practice. The master mason and engineer Nicola Zabaglia (1664–1750) invented many ingenious mechanical devices to aid restoration. Here he illustrates his techniques, with the help of Giovanni Bottari and Lelio Cosatto. The mechanical devices, scaffolds and working tools here described would remain in use in the Roman building yard until the beginning of the twentieth century. The plates also illustrate the renowned achievement of Domenico Fontana in re-erecting the Vatican obelisk in 1589. Berlin Kat. 2755; Cicognara 968; Riccardi ii, 642.

Plate 43 - The American Goldfinch

London: 1734-1743 - Plate from The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands London: 1734-1743 (first edition and second edition) Sheet size: 14” x 20” Framed size: 24" x 20 1/2" In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas. Over the course of his journeys, he encountered and documented uncountable varieties of animal and plant life that were entirely unknown to Europeans. His drawings and written observations were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of previously uninvestigated wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. When Catesby returned to England from his final voyage to America in 1726, he was unable to afford the expense of having his drawings engraved professionally. Undeterred, he taught himself to etch with the assistance of Joseph Goupy, a French artist living in London, and went on to produce all but a few of the plates for his publication. He scrupulously monitored the coloring of the engravings, either painting the impressions himself or closely supervising the work to insure its fidelity to his preparatory studies. The result of Catesby’s tenacious effort was the most sweeping, complete and unique natural history study ever done. Widely considered a crowning achievement of 18th-century art and science, Catesby’s Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands has lost none of its power to delight in the 250 years since its publication. This remarkable study of American plants, animals, and marine life provided an important model for later artists, including John James Audubon, who followed in Catesby’s footsteps a century later. The works illustrated here are among the masterpieces of Catesby’s Natural History. The artist’s charming, distinctive style is immediately apparent in these engravings, and Catesby’s enthusiasm for his subjects is palpable. Aside from their esthetic charm, however, Catesby’s illustrations were significant for other reasons. His pioneering attempts to describe and portray birds accurately, life-sized, and in botanical settings set him apart from his contemporaries and foreshadowed the work of Audubon and Alexander Wilson. He was the first to abandon the Indian names for his subjects, trying to establish scientific names based on generic relationships. Indeed, the great Linnaeus, working on his Systema Naturae at this time, used Catesby’s work as the basis of his system of binomial nomenclature for American species. For all these and many other reasons, these are magnificent prints both for their beauty and importance. The quality of the work was so far superior to foregoing accounts that many scholars rank Catesby as the first real naturalist in America. Framed in a beautiful frame to museum specifications: mounted with archival materials, UV plexiglass, etc.

Locupletissimi Rerum Naturalium Thesauri - Tab. LXXXVII

Amsterdam 1743 - Seba was a German-born apothecary practicing in Amsterdam. His scientific interests and curiosity motivated him to amass a collection of exotic oddities garnered from his travels to the East and West Indies and from the purchases he made of specimens collected by travellers and world over. Many of the snake, plants, fish and shells illustrated and described in his 'Thesaurus' were based on the specimens Seba collected in his 'cabinet of curiosities'. In fact, many of the extravagant designs of the engravings were copies of the arrangements of the specimens in the drawers of his cabinets and were echoed in the arrangements on the walls of the museum's interior. The collection was a valuable source to European natural historians, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to travel to the far flung destinations where the specimens were collected. It is documented that Carolus Linneas visited the collection when he was in Amsterdam. In 1717, Seba sold his collection to Peter the Great of Russia for an amount which contemporaries described as 'vast'.

        The History of England

London - John and Paul Knapton 1743 - Four leatherbound volumes with marble paper covered boards and gilt titles to the spines. Volume I has an engraved frontispiece, 3 fold-out maps, 4 foldout plates, and 49 other plates. Volume II has an engraved frontispiece and 12 plates. Volume III has an engraved frontispiece, 2 foldout maps, 1 foldout plate and 6 other plates. Volume IV has an engraved frontispiece, 1 other plate, 5 foldout maps and plans, and all 22 plates of medals. Paul de Rapin (March 25, 1661 - 1725), sieur of Thoyras (and therefore styled Thoyras de Rapin), was a French historian writing under English patronage. The son of Jacques de Rapin, an avocat at Castres (Tarn), he was educated at the Protestant academy of Saumur, and in 1679 became an advocate, but soon afterwards joined the army. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and the death of his father led him to come to England; but, unable to find work there, he went on to the Netherlands where he enlisted in a company of French volunteers at Utrecht, commanded by his cousin, Daniel de Rapin. He accompanied William III to England in 1688, and during the Williamite war in Ireland he took part in the siege of Carrickfergus and the Battle of the Boyne, and was wounded at the Siege of Limerick (1690). Soon afterwards he was promoted to captain; but in 1693 he resigned in order to become tutor to the Earl of Portland's son. After travelling with the boy, he settled with his family (he married Marie-Anne Testart in 1699) in Holland, first at the Hague, then, to save money, at Wesel, in 1707. It was at Wesel that he began his great work, L'Histoire d'Angleterre. Volume I contained, in five books, an account of Britain from the time of the Ancient British down to the Norman Conquest, and made an unsually thorough attempt for its time to rally the various principal sources. Volume II (Books VI-VIII) Covered from William the Conqueror to Henry III; Volume III (IX, X and XI), Edward I to Henry V; Volume IV (XII to XIV), Henry VI to Henry VII; Volume V (XV), Henry VIII; Volume VI (XVI & XVII), Edward VI to Elizabeth, and Vol VII (XVIII), James I and Charles I. It was printed at the Hague in 1724, with illustrations and allegorical endpieces designed and engraved by F. M. La Cave, and with a dedicatory epistle to King George I. The written style is lucid and effective. Although written in French this work was produced for the endorsement of the British monarchy, and at the time of its publication, for the House of Hanover. The original version was almost the only English History available in France in the first half of the eighteenth century. All volumes of his work were translated in the early 18th century by the Rev Nicolas Tindal. Tindal, the nephew and heir of Dr Matthew Tindal, the eminent deist, in a total of 14 volumes. Tindal began this great task as a chaplain to the Royal Navy, as attested in his Forward to an early volume. He added large numbers of informative notes throughout the volumes, which were illustrated with engravings, maps and genealogical tables of great quality. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm although the outer hinges are starting to crack. There is some wear to the extremities including heavy rubbing to the boards with loss to the paper at the edges, and some cracking to the leather on the spines. The pages are rough cut. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark, odd spot, mild water stain and some pencil and inkannotations. There are repairs to a few of the edges of the pages, mainly in Volume I, including the title page of Volume I. There are two pages with large closed tears to the middle: p 671/2 in Volume II, and p 513/4 in Volume III. Page 11/12 in Volume IV is detached and present. The volumes are missing some plates, although there is no pagination on the ESTC to properly compare this. All the medals plates of Volume IV are present as these are numbered and described in the accompanying text. Overall the volumes a [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Single Plate, Musculorum Tabula IX from Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani.

[Leiden Joannem & Hermannum Verbeek 1743] - From the first edition of one of the greatest of all Anatomical Atlases. Tabula IX, which features Albinus and Wandelaar's famous "Muscle Man", a skinned figure whose musculature is visible and defined, as viewed in walking profile with the left arm raised and the right foot forward, his head is turned slightly away from the viewer. Elephant folio, 620 by 475 mm, single folio sheet, now mounted with the use of none-evasive corner tabs and protected by mylar. Very well preserved, fully intact with only the most minor evidence of age. ONE OF THE MAGNIFICENT PLATES FROM "AMONG THE MOST ARTISTICALLY PERFECT OF ANATOMICAL ATLASES." Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect. The most famous plate in the atlas depicts a skeletal figure standing in front of an enormous grazing rhinoceros, sketched by Wandelaar from the first living specimen in Europe, which had arrived at Amsterdam zoo in 1741" (Norman). The plates in this large folio work, and in the four supplementary works in large folio with which it is bound, are unsurpassed for their cool, elegant aesthetic and scientific accuracy. They were drawn and engraved by Jan Wandelaer, a pupil of the engravers Jacob Fokema and Guillem van der Gouwen, and the painter Gerard de Lairesse, who prepared the drawings for Bidloo's atlas. Prior to working for Albinus Wandelaer worked for Friedrik Ruysch. Albinus, however, provided Wandelaar with the opportunity for the full expression of his talents as a draftsman and engraver. In an attempt to increase the scientific accuracy of anatomical illustration, Albinus and Wandelaar devised a new technique of placing nets with square webbing at specified intervals between the artist and the anatomical specimen and copying the images using the grid patterns. Wandelaer placed each figure in a carefully chosen landscape setting, and the artistic results are so pleasantly successful that the anatomical figures, although composed of many separate parts, appear to be actually stepping out of the picture.         Mappemonde ou Description du Globe Terrestre

1743 - Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy Mappemonde ou Description du Globe Terrestre Paris: 1743 Copperplate engraving with original hand outline color Paper size 20" x 29 1/2"; Framed size 31 1/4" x 41 1/8" The Robert de Vaugondy family of mapmakers was preeminent in the eighteenth century, at a time when the French were at the forefront of cartography. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy was a descendent of the family of the great seventeenth-century French cartographer Nicolas Sanson. Sanson had initiated the so-called “French school of cartography,” which was unprecedented in its attention to precision and scientific detail, and which discarded much of the decorative embellishments of previous maps as being irrelevant. From Sanson’s time in the second half of the seventeenth century until the latter part of the eighteenth century, with the activity of the Robert de Vaugondy family, French geographical conceptions were more influential than those of any other nation. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy inherited the firm of his uncle, Pierre Moullart-Sanson, in 1730. He enlarged the stock of his family company when he purchased the estate of another acclaimed cartographer, Hubert Jaillot. He and other family members combined much of the inherited cartographic material with their own innovations, as well as those of the most advanced American mapmakers, to publish a series of beautifully produced atlases at mid-century. Gilles and his son, Didier, were the most celebrated members of the cartography dynasty, both honored with the title of Geographer to the King, Gilles in 1730 and Didier in 1760. They were responsible for this large-scale, remarkably accurate world map. In compiling it, they revised and corrected material from Sanson and Jaillot, and added many new place names. As a result, this map was one of the most advanced of its day. In a move that was characteristic of French scientific cartography, the unknown areas were left blank, rather than invented (see, for example, theincomplete coastlines of Australia and North America). This is a magnificent map by this distinguished family of mapmakers.

        Voyages de Mons'r Shaw M.D.

The Hague, Jean Neaulme 1743 - Volume one of a scarce french translation of Thomas Shaw's greatest workFirst French EditionVolume One only of two containing most of the plates for the whole work. The complete work fetches around 3000. Translated from the original into FrenchBound in half leather with marbled boards and gilt letteringIn 1720, Thomas Shaw(16941751), was appointed chaplain to the English factory at Algiers at a salary of 100 per annum. During his time there he travelled widely, to Egypt, Sinai, Cyprus, and the Holy Land in 17212 and to Tunis and Carthage in 1727, as well as making various excursions into the interior of Barbary (Algiers, Tripoli, and Morocco). In Barbary travel was comparatively safe, but in Aqabah he was stripped naked by robbers, and while travelling with 6000 pilgrims to Jerusalem he was seized and held to ransom. However, with a body capable of bearing the fatigues of travelling united to a mind rich in most kinds of human learning (European Magazine, 19, 1791, 83), in all these regions he made careful observations of the geography, natural history, customs, and antiquities. In 1733, having married Joanna, the widow of his friend and benefactor, Edward Holden, consul at Algiers, Shaw returned to England. Elected a fellow of Queen's in 1727, he became doctor of divinity in 1734 and was presented to the vicarage of Godshill, Isle of Wight. He was also elected a fellow of the Royal Society on 13 June 1734, having contributed to their Philosophical Transactions of 1729, through Sir Hans Sloane, with A geographical description of the kingdom of Tunis. Four years later Shaw published Travels, or, Observations Relating to Several Parts of Barbary and the Levant (1738), which included maps, plates, lists of animals, plants (about 640 species), fossils, coins, and inscriptions, and a copious index. He had engaged the botanist Johann Jakob Dillenius to catalogue his flora. Dedicated to George II, the book also acknowledged the generous patronage of Queen Caroline. The bibliophile Thomas Dibdin called the work a safe inmate of a well-chosen collection and exhorted Fly, fly, to secure it (Library Companion, 1824, 2. 48). It was especially admired for the illustrations of natural history, of classical authors, and of the scriptures. Gibbon honourably excepts him from the crowd of blind travellers (E. Gibbon, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, chap. 24), while his scrupulous veracity was vindicated by James Bruce and later African explorers. (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). Condition: The binding is firm. The front outer hinge is starting. There is wear to the extremities including 1. 5 by 1 area of loss to the base of the spine panel as can be seen above. There is also some bumping, and rubbing to the leather. There is a small neat label to the head of the spine panel. Internally the pages are generally bright and clean with some areas of slight browning and spotting. There is a small ownership ink stamp to the front free end paper. Overall the condition of the book is very good with very good pull-outmaps and plates. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Plate 80 - The Small Bittern

London 1743 - The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands London: 1734-1743 Hand-colored copperplate engraving; Sheet size: 14” x 20” In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America.
