Le Delizie della Villa di Castelazzo

1743. LEONARDI, Domenico Felice. Le Delizie della Villa di Castelazzo. LXVIII, [2] pp. Illustrated with a double-page engraved portrait of Conte Giuseppe Antonio Arconati-Visconti, a double-page engraved plan, and 24 double-page engraved plates by Marc'Antonio Dal Re. Small folio, 374 x 255 mm, bound in full contemporary Italian calf, intricately gilt-tooled spine. [Milano: F. Joseph Maria Felix Ferrarini, 1743.] |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition. Marc'Antonio Dal Re illustrates the gardens, architecture, and contents of the famed Lombardian Villa Castelazzo, owned by Conte Giuseppe Antonio Arconati-Visconti. This series of 24 engraved plates by Dal Re represents a separate issue devoted only to the Villa Castelazzo; they were originally prepared by Dal Re for his massive work on seventeen Italian villas of the Milan region entitled Ville di Delizia, issued in the same year (1743). In Dal Re's Ville di Delizia, Castelazzo received by far the largest number of engraved images compared to any other villa in the Dal Re series. The Villa Castelazzo was designed by the noted Italian architect Giovanni Ruggeri and the landscape gardens were conceived by Jean Gianda. The emphasis was on scenographic effect; the gardens were the largest in Lombardy and offered a new, creative Italian style principally using the huge, clipped green hedges as walls for linear and winding pathways. In a few instances the hedges formed complex and geometrical green buildings and streets, such that the garden became "a kind of laboratory for experimenting with a possible fantastic city of the future built around metaphysical spaces, absent from cities as we know them" (Virgilio Vercelloni, European Gardens, an Historical Atlas 86). The Dal Re engravings capture the eighteenth-century views of clipped high hedges, refined parterres, a complex labyrinth of high hedges, open-air theaters, bassins and fountains, an impressive espaliered wall of lemon trees below a tower, and exterior and interior views of the villa, including two depictions of the art gallery. The landscape plates reveal a palpable French influence on these Milanese gardens at Castelazzo, with elaborate parterres and separate garden buildings, although one would never mistake these for French gardens, as they all contain distinct Italian characteristics. It was Eugene, Prince of Savoy, who was largely responsible for the political stability in the Lombardy province during the early eighteenth century and who was a recognized connoisseur of the visual arts, architecture, and landscape design. Under Eugene's rule Northern Italy enjoyed many years of peace that made possible the construction of country villas and with their attendant lavish gardens. "Villa owners, especially those such as the Arconati, came from Lombardy's nobility and aristocracy. This was not a villa culture dominated by the papacy, papal families, or the Catholic Church as one would find surrounding Rome in the same or earlier periods… Display of elaborate estates and vast land holdings, along with various signs of wealth and status such as fashion, architecture, and garden design, served to justify and reinforce position in the social hierarchy. Dal Re's prints admirably served this purpose, advertising the elegant villa and its surroundings - if not their reality, then the owner's desired fantasy - to an extended audience of locals and travelers alike" (Dianne Harris, "Lombard Villas of the Eighteenth Century and the Villa Arconati at Castelazzo," in Catena: Digital Archive of Historic Gardens and Landscapes). Some professional repairs to binding extremities. A very fine copy. PROVENANCE: Ownership signature dated December 1755 on rear end leaf; Sir William Woods (1785-1842) with his ex-libris. Woods was an illegitimate son of the Duke of Norfolk and was appointed to the post of Garter Principal King of Arms in 1838, which position he held until his death; Weillschott, with ex-libris. Cicognara 4030. Berlin Katalog 3495.

Calf-backed marbled boards; a fine copy. First edition. Disappointed with Fuchard?'s work, Bunon was the first to perform specialized odontological research as well as to address such issues such as the development and care of children?'s teeth, and dental hypoplasia (caused by childhood diseases). For the prevention of tooth decay, he writes that after caries, dental tartar is the most potent enemy to the vitality of the teeth. In addition, he includes the first dental pharmacopeia. Of special interest was Bunon?'s proposal to substitute the word legs for that of dental roots. Bunon (1702-1748), a French dentist, was an ardent champion of conservative dentistry and prophylaxis and succeeded in converting many medical men to his views. ?"Anyone who takes the trouble of reading Bunon?'s works attentively cannot help admiring his depth of insight, his spirit of observation, his exquisite clinical sense, and his ingenuity?" (Guerini, A History of Dentistry, p. 342).

[38], 408, [16 (index)] pp. (lacking engraved title, pp. 49/50).. 1743 Very uncommon fourth edition of this emblem book, following the first of 1706. Ginther also published a book of sermons, Currus Israel, et auriga ejus, along with a Marian emblem book, Mater amoris et doloris; the present item was printed in Augsburg, Germany, with the text in Latin and illustrated with 50 engraved emblems. The emblems are unattributed, but the frontispiece (not present in this copy) was done by Johann Caspar Gütwein. Boards covered in music-printed paper from an 18th-century antiphonal, spine with gilt-stamped leather title and author labels. Engraved title and pp. 49/50 (emblem VII) lacking. Title-page and next leaf with long-ago repaired holes, one on the latter affecting an initial on the verso; title-page with old inked device(?) and 19th-century institutional stamp on verso, showing through in part to recto; a small hole in a third leaf, taking perhaps a letter or two. Final blank leaf and two other leaves also stamped. One leaf torn from margins into text, repaired with Japanese tissue. Pages slightly age-toned, some with mild foxing or the odd spot. Faults noted, this is yet a worthwhile and studyable/enjoyable volume.

Woodcut royal arms on title. 1 p.l., 34 pp. Small folio, cont. French red morocco, panelled in gilt in the style of the "cabinet du Roi," gilt arms & ciphers [Olivier 2495 fer 2] on covers, with ciphers on spine, a.e.g. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1743. First edition and very uncommon. This catalogue, the splendid Han Fürstenberg -- Otto Schäfer -- Jacques Bemberg copy, lists the plates made of the collections of the king, including paintings, medals, royal chateaux, fountains, grottoes, statues, busts, tapestries, and jewels, along with records of festivals, entrances, battles, etc., etc. "Colbert, understanding that engraving was the best means to disseminate and preserve knowledge of the undertakings of Louis XlV, began to assemble a group of outstanding engravers. By 1660 they had achieved the stature of independent artists and by 1670 had become a special group under the protection of the king, joined together at the Gobelins around Charles Le Brun and Sebastien Le Clerc. From 1660 André Félibien was charged with providing descriptions of maisons royales and Adam Van der Meulen and Israel Silvestre were sent to the newly conquered territories to make views of the principal chateaus and fortresses. Other commissions for the Cabinet du Roi included engravings by Chauveau of the king's paintings at the Tuileries; copies of paintings and sculpture by Claude Mellan, Rousselet, and Audran in the galleries of the king; copies by Ronelet of the king's collection of medals; and other works of art and architecture by Rousselet, Silvestre, Chauveau, and Le Clerc. At the same time the Académie des Sciences began scholarly works commissioned by Colbert...Illustrators for these works were Abraham Bosse, Sebastien Le Clerc (who often made engravings for Claude Perrault), Nicolas Bailly, and L. de Châtillon... "From 1670 Colbert determined to join these engravings in a collection. He proposed that at the end of each year a temporary volume would be composed of all types of works, with the text printed in French and Latin. At the end of ten or twelve years the collection would be subdivided by topics, so that the king would have volumes separated into all the sciences and achievements of his reign... "A complete record of the king's possessions was never achieved, but the plan was continued by his successors. The engravings from the Cabinet du Roi were first published in a variety of sizes, and separately. They were then collected into volumes, according to Colbert's plan, but sporadically. In 1727 a new edition was published with additional plates and a catalogue. A third edition of twenty-three volumes with further additions and an index was issued in 1743. Later sets were formed with plates from various editions. The plates survive to the present day at the Chalcographie du Louvre."-Millard, French Books, 46. This catalogue was issued as a guide to the contents of the fifty sets of 956 plates of the 1743 edition, which were prepared as gifts (see Balayé, La Bibliothèque Nationale des origines à 1800, pp. 226-27). Fine copy. .

This is the former copy of the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. [Norman 974, Waller 4011, Wellcome III, Osler 1153, Choulant p. 289 f.] Hallerian physiology was a theory competing with galvanism in Italy in the late 18th century. It is named after Albrecht von Haller, a Swiss physician who is considered the father of neurology. The hallerians' fundamental tenet held that muscular movements were produced by a mechanical force, different from life and from the nervous system, and which operated beyond consciousness. The activity of this function could be controlled in dead and dissected animals by touching a metal knife to the muscle fiber or by a spark being discharged on them. The electricity operated only as a stimulus of irritability, and it was irritability which was the one, true cause of the contractions. (Wikipedia) Haller's attention had been directed to the profession of medicine while he was residing in the house of a physician at Biel after his father's death in 1721. While still a sickly and excessively shy youth, he went in his sixteenth year to the University of Tübingen (December 1723), where he studied under Elias Rudolph Camerarius Jr. and Johann Duvernoy. Dissatisfied with his progress, he in 1725 exchanged Tübingen for Leiden, where Boerhaave was in the zenith of his fame, and where Albinus had already begun to lecture in anatomy. At that university he graduated in May 1727, undertaking successfully in his thesis to prove that the so-called salivary duct, claimed as a recent discovery by Georg Daniel Coschwitz (1679?-1729), was nothing more than a blood-vessel. Haller then visited London, making the acquaintance of Sir Hans Sloane, William Cheselden, John Pringle, James Douglas and other scientific men; next, after a short stay in Oxford, he visited Paris, where he studied under Henri François Le Dran and Jacob Winslow; and in 1728 he proceeded to Basel, where he devoted himself to the study of higher mathematics under John Bernoulli. It was during his stay there also that his interest in botany was awakened; and, in the course of a tour (July/August, 1728), through Savoy, Baden and several of the cantons of Switzerland, he began a collection of plants which was afterwards the basis of his great work on the flora of Switzerland. From a literary point of view the main result of this, the first of his many journeys through the Alps, was his poem entitled Die Alpen, which was finished in March 1729, and appeared in the first edition (1732) of his Gedichte. This poem of 490 hexameters is historically important as one of the earliest signs of the awakening appreciation of the mountains, though it is chiefly designed to contrast the simple and idyllic life of the inhabitants of the Alps with the corrupt and decadent existence of the dwellers in the plains. In 1729 he returned to Bern and began to practise as a physician; his best energies, however, were devoted to the botanical and anatomical researches which rapidly gave him a European reputation, and procured for him from George II in 1736 a call to the chair of medicine, anatomy, botany and surgery in the newly founded University of Göttingen. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1743, a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1747, and was ennobled in 1749. The quantity of work achieved by Haller in the seventeen years during which he occupied his Göttingen professorship was immense. Apart from the ordinary work of his classes, which entailed the task of newly organizing a botanical garden (the Alte Botanische Garten der Universität Göttingen), an anatomical theatre and museum, an obstetrical school, and similar institutions, he carried on without interruption those original investigations in botany and physiology, the results of which are preserved in the numerous works associated with his name.... This is the former copy of the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland.. At that university he graduated in May 1727, undertaking successfully in his thesis to prove that the so-called salivary duct, claimed as a recent discovery by Georg Daniel Coschwitz (1679-1729), was nothing more than a blood-vessel. Haller then visited London, making the acquaintance of Sir Hans Sloane, William Cheselden, John Pringle, James Douglas and other scientific men; next, after a short stay in Oxford, he visited Paris, where he studied under Henri Francois Le Dran and Jacob Winslow; and in 1728 he proceeded to Basel, where he devoted himself to the study of higher mathematics under John Bernoulli.
