        [HWV 49a]. Acis and Galatea. A Mask As it was Originally Compos'd with the Overture, Recitativo's, Songs, Duets & Choruses, for Voices and Instruments... [Full score]

      London: I. Walsh. [1743]. Folio. Attractively bound in period style in modern brown half calf with marbled boards, spine in blind-tooled compartments with red morocco title labels gilt. 1f. (title), 1f. (table of contents and publisher's catalogue, "Musick Just Publish'd... Compos'd by Mr. Handel"), 89, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Occasional minor foxing and offsetting; title and final leaves slightly browned at edges; small ink stain to table of contents. . First Edition of the complete work in full score; the only such edition published in Handel's lifetime. Smith p. 82, no. 6. BUC p. 430. Hoboken 5, 88. Hirsch II, 373. RISM H380. The first public performance of the complete work was given at Lincoln's Inn Theatre on March 26th 1731. The libretto is by John Gay (1685-1732). "Acis and Galatea, HandelÂ’s first dramatic work in English, had its models in the English pastoral operas by Pepusch (his colleague at Cannons), Galliard and others that had been given in 1715–18 at the Drury Lane theatre in rivalry to the Italian opera... The work is unique in HandelÂ’s output (though he tried to recapture elements of it in such works as LÂ’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, 1739, and Semele, 1744); the influence of Purcell has been claimed, and musical ideas indebted to Keiser and others have been noted, but in approach it owes more to the Drury Lane pastoral operas than to any other source and in inspiration, conception and execution it remains wholly individual." Stanley Sadie in Grove Music Online. Acis and Galatea "is so perfect in style that we might take it for the climax of a long traditon, instead of a first essay in a new form and an unfamiliar language. As such it is a sufficient miracle; but it appears as a solitary peak only because its forebears have never been investigated. It is a vital link in the chain between the Purcellian masque and the mature Handelian oratorio." Dean p. 153.

        [HWV 350]. Handel's Celebrated Water Musick Compleat. Set for the Harpsicord. To which is added, Two favourite Minuets, with Variations for the Harpsicord, By Geminiani

      London: I. Walsh. [ca. 1743]. Folio. Attractively bound in period style in modern quarter tan calf with marbled boards, red morocco title label gilt to spine. 1f. (title), [1] (blank), 2-27, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Final blank page with a somewhat crude contemporary sketch of two bulls and a woman with horns, hooves, and a devil's tail, with annotations in pencil and black ink. Slightly worn, soiled and foxed; small repair to blank lower margin of final leaf not affecting text. . First complete edition. Smith p. 255, no. 3 (the present copy includes the additional page numbering as described herein). Fuld p. 622. BUC p. 443. RISM H1323 (not distinguishing issues). "The major orchestral work of this period is the Water Music, a large-scale suite specially written to accompany a royal water party of June 1717, in which George I and his entourage were conveyed by barge along the Thames from Whitehall to Chelsea and back. The suite is remarkable for being the first orchestral work composed in England to include horns, crooked in both F and D; in movements in D major they are joined, sometimes in dialogue, by trumpets. The jovial opulence of such moments is balanced by lightly scored movements in both major and minor keys, mostly having G as their tonic. Though some of the music may have been written earlier for other contexts, the recent notion that the music was conceived or considered to exist as ?'three suites?' is questionable, since the earliest sources (keyboard transcripts from the early 1720s) show the movements in D and G in mixed order (as in the editions of Arnold and Chrysander). Ordering the movements by key had however become a practice by the 1730s, and is reflected in the keyboard arrangement published by Walsh in 1743." Anthony Hicks in Grove Music Online.

        THE GERMAN BIBLE IN AMERICA. WITH 25 ORIGINAL LEAVES. Introduction by Don Yoder

      New Haven; Bryn Mawr; New York. 2012.. 20; 20pp. text in both English and German, plus twenty- five original leaves tipped into accompanying folders. Large folio. Fine. In a custom clamshell box. The German Bible in America has a long and significant history, reflective of the European culture which gave it birth, the local conditions of Pennsylvania, where it rose to its greatest heights, and the rich German- American culture created by emigrants and their descendants in the 19th-century United States. From the first American edition of a Bible in German, in 1743, through the late 19th century, numerous printers and publishers issued Bibles in various formats, ranging from large folios intended for lectern use to smaller versions for personal study. This leaf book celebrates the range and richness of these productions, indicative of the world of German culture in America in the 18th and 19th centuries, as expressed through its most widely studied text, in a series of twenty-five leaves. Each set contains two versions of the descriptive text, one in English and the other in German, with an introduction by Don Yoder, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, Folklore and Folk-Life at the University of Pennsylvania. Further text describes the printers of each of the leaves, the circumstances under which they were printed, and other attributes. Each leaf is enclosed in an individual folder. The German Bible in America is issued in an edition of sixty copies, with fifty of the regular series and ten additional deluxe copies containing six extra leaves of illustrations from the illustrated Bibles included in the collection. This is one of fifty regular copies, numbered by hand. A deluxe issue, with six additional illustrated leaves, is also available for $3500.

These prints have a location on each of them, what did pas.Plein calf iced era edition from 1740. Smooth spine decorated. Part of title and volume number in red morocco. Caps of Volume II leveled; 2 corners élimées.Ce licentious and erotic tale won upon its release a success, although it caused a scandal and that accused the author of obscenity, irreligion; some even saw a critique of Ugénitus bubble (against Jansenism) and Cardinal de Rohan, and Crebillon lives imprisoned following his accusations. Tanzai is a fairy tale and political, including the strangeness of the story always surprises the reader, the whole story revolving around a skimmer gold huge round ... --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

        CONSULTATIONES MEDICAE SIVE SYLLOGE EPISTOLARUM CUM RESPONSIS HERMANNI BOERHAAVE

      Alex. Johnson 1743 - (2), 16, 231, (1), 34, (2=blank) pp. Some library descriptions also mention an initial blank. In all copies seen this is a misidentified flyleave however. The Leiden copy of the 1743 edition is quite loosely bound, and shows quite clearly that the final blank and leave R1 are connected. Contemporary calf with gilt title on decorated spine (in 6 compartments). Contemporary decorated endpapers. Title page in red and black. Edges stained red. Small old name at ffep., the connected HB (identical to our copy of Elementa Chemiae) suggests a Boerhaave related provenance. With 2 prefaces, a 2-page version, undated and ending with a double horizontal line. Further a 14 -page preface signed CB, December 1die, 1743. The first is commonly found in copies with a 1743 title, the long preface in those with 1744 on title. Collation of the text then following is identical in both issues: A-P8 R6. The librarian of UVA checked the collations of their 2 copies confirming this, as do the 1743 and 1744 copies of Leiden University (autopsy, also noting that the 1744 title is printed in black only). 52 medical cases with a response (and sometimes recipy) by Boerhaave. Followed by two annexes on Kaxezia and Paralysis. A very early edition of this Boerhaave title, reprinted many times in London (1744, Nourse), Goettingen (Van der Hoek) and Paris. This possibly explains, why no copies are found outside The Netherlands: foreign librarians just ordered in their own country, where the book was available shortly after the Dutch 1st edition came out. 5 copies in NCC (the central electronic catalog of Dutch libraries), 1 in KvK (Erlangen/Nurnberg). COPAC mentions 1 copy (Wellcome). First signature of text signed: Vol. I, as usual, however no additional volumes issued. Osler 1119 (however a later 1753 Paris edition). Here then a rare copy of the 1st (1743) issue, surprisingly with also the long preface bound in, which usually is found in 2nd (1744) issue copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        A Voyage to the South Seas, in the Years 1740-1

      London: Jacob Robinson, 1743. Octavo, a good copy in contemporary sprinkled sheep, repaired. "incredible Hardships they frequently underwent for want of food" First edition of one of the classic stories of shipwreck survival: the loss of the Wager. This famous account jointly written by the gunner and the carpenter on the Wager describes the wreck of the ship, one of Anson's fleet, off the coast of Chile, the survivors' life on shore, and their subsequent voyage in a longboat through the Straits of Magellan to Rio de Janeiro. As Spate has remarked, 'For wild drama, or melodrama, very few tales of the sea can match this of the Wager'.Like Anson's official account of the full expedition this was a popular book and went through a number of editions. There were two editions in the first year of publication, one as here giving the authors' names on the title-page and the other anonymously published.

        GILBERT (Davies) On the Expediency of Assigning Specific Names to All Such Functions of Simple Elements as Represent Definite Physical Properties; with the Suggestion of a New Term in Mechanics;

      - Illustrated by an Investigation of the Machine Moved by Recoil, and Also by Some Observations on the Steam Engine, pp.25-38, Presented within the complete volume of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol 117. * "Here Davis Gilbert separates for the first time the concept of efficiency in a steam engine from the concept of duty, a term invented by James Watt. To demonstrate the usefulness of this new concept, he carries out a theoretical investigation of the reaction turbine, known then as Barker's mill, a simple form of reaction water turbine invented in 1743 by Dr. Robert Barker. However, it could also be worked using steam, as invented by Wolfgang von Kempelen in 1784, much to Watt's alarm. Trevithick himself had also designed a steam reaction turbine in 1815. The paper goes on to consider how to increase the efficiency of the high-pressure steam engine by reducing its fuel consumption, citing in particular Hornblower's compound engine, and is a rare example of a theoretical rather than practical approach to this problem." [J. Elton]. Presented within the complete volume of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Vol 117, Parts I and II (complete), bound in one volume for 1827, comprising, vi, 388,16, 12, (7)pp large quarto, with 15 engraved plates, late 19thC morocco backed library cloth with a neat unlinked library name stamp on general title, foot of last leaves and occasionally elsewhere, also an inked library stamp verso title and occasionally repeated, inner joint broken and first signature sprung forward with resultant damage to outer edges of some early leaves and plates (not affecting the Gilbert paper), otherwise a good copy, London, Nicol., printers to the Royal Society,1827. * A FULL LIST OF CONTENTS OF THIS VOLUME SENT ON REQUEST.         A general system of horsemanship in all its branches.

      London, J. Brindley, 1743.. Folio. 2 vols. bound in one. (2), 142 pp. (7), (1), ''138'' (but: 142), (14) pp. Vol. 1 (Cavendish) with a double-page engraved title-page by Petrus de Jode after Abraham van Diepenbeeck, 42 double-page engraved plates after Abraham van Diepenbeeck numbered bottom right, the title-page and all plates on guards, 6 engraved headpieces (including the arms of the Duke of Richmond above the dedication), 5 engraved historiated initials, over 40 woodcuts in text, woodcut tailpiece. Vol. 2 (Saunier) with 20 engraved plates (10 full-page and 2 folding printed in sepia, 8 full-page printed in black), 2 engraved headpieces (1 in sepia) (including the arms of Dr. [Richard?] Mead above the dedication), 1 engraved historiated initial in sepia, woodcut tailpieces. Set in Caslon types, along with some "Fell" types that had found their way from Oxford to the London trade by this date. 18th century mottled calf, sewn on 7 cords, re-backed with parts of the original gold-tooled spine and red morocco label laid down, with a Duke's crowned D and reversed D-monogram in the last compartment.. First edition in the original English of a comprehensive and magnificently illustrated study on horses and horsemanship, first published in French translation, with fine engravings showing different riding positions, hunting views, bridles, and the anatomy of the horse. The text elaborates on the manner of feeding, dressing and training of pure-bred and common horses, directions for the choice of stallions and mares, disorders, causes and symptoms of all illnesses and methods of cure, and the anatomy and physiology of the horse. At the end of volume 2 there are indexes of diseases and remedies as well as a collection of prescriptions according to the best modern practices for most of the illnesses of which a horse is known to suffer. - Volume 1 is the first English translation of the "Methode et invention de dresser les chevaux", using the same plates as the first French edition (Antwerp, J. van Meurs, 1658). The book was written by the diplomat and aristocrat William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle (1592-1676). "The publisher J. Brindley acquired the original copperplates for the engravings in the original French edition of Newcastle, printed in 1658 at Antwerp" (Podeschi), and published his French edition in 1737. "The book was then translated into English and published in 1743 as vol. I of 'A General System of Horsemanship'. As such, it is the first English version of the French Newcastle, a work [originally] written in English but translated [from the author's manuscript] and first published in French" (Podeschi). The engraved title-page still bears the date of the first French edition, and most reference works list it with the plates. On some plates the page numbers of the French edition have been removed, with traces still visible. Most of volume 2 is the first English translation of "La parfaite connaissance des cheveaux" ("The perfect knowledge of horses"), an anatomical and physiological description of the horse by the master horseman and director of the Leiden equestrian academy Gaspard de Saunier (1663-1748) and published under the inspection of the Dutch botanist, humanist and physician Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738). The anatomical plates include (reduced) copies of the plates used in the first French edition of Saunier's work (The Hague, A. Moetjens, 1734), and Snape's "The anatomy of the horse" (London, M. Flescher, 1683, cf. Podeschi 31). - The engraved headpieces "are copied from Parrocel's engravings in La Gueriniere's 'Ecole de cavalerie'" (Podeschi), which was published in 1733 and called by Mennessier de la Lance "one of the most beautiful equine books ever published in France" (cf. Podeschi 46). The numbering of the pages is irregular, with volume 1 switching from Roman to Arabic numerals between 8 and 11, the second volume repeating pp. 33-36, with several misnumbered pages. - We have not identified the presumably English duke whose crowned D cypher monogram appears at the foot of the spine. 20th-century armorial bookplate of Perran Wood on paste-down. The author's preface to volume 1 bound in volume 2 and the index to volume 2's plates on diseases (along with the plates themselves) between pages 4 and 5. Spine rebacked; front hinge cracked. In good condition. - Mennessier de Lance II, col. 250 (s. v. Newcastle). Nissen, ZBI 849. Podeschi 49. Brunet I, 1700. Graesse I, 93.

        Religion is the life of God's people: a sermon preached at Boston, in the presence of His Excellency William Shirley, Esq; Governour and Commander in chief in and over His Majesty's Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New-England; and the Honourable His Majesty's Council, and the Honourable House of Representatives, of the Province aforesaid, May 25th. 1743. Being the day for the election of His Majesty's Council

      Boston: Pr. by S. Kneeland & T. Green, Printers to the Honourable House of Representatives 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.625"). [1] f., 43, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1743 In May of 1743 the Convention of Ministers, consisting of the "Pastors of the Churches of Christ in the provinces of Massachusetts-Bay," met to reaffirm the establishment Protestant religion and denounce the Great Awakening. On the occasion of this meeting their moderator, the Rev. Nathanael Eells, Congregationalist minister and pastor of the Second Church in Scituate, preached this sermon—which includes the significant phrase, "the one only living and true God; who is one in Essence, and three in Relations" (p. 8). This formulation in reaction to the Great Awakening characterizes the beginning of the Unitarian movement in the U.S., a movement which now seems very far indeed from anything this preacher would have foreseen. A fascinating item in the history of religious thought. Recent cloth-covered boards; a red leather spine label, gilt double ruled above and below with gilt lettering. 19th-century library rubber-stamps on verso of title leaf and bottom of p. 43. Light waterstain on title-page, occasional other light stains, overall remarkably clean. A nice, neat book.

        TABLEAU NATUREL DES RAPPORTS QUI EXISTENT ENTRE DIEU, L'HOMME ET L'UNIVERS.

      Opera completa in due volumi. Testo francese. Cm.20x11,7. Pg.276; 246. Legature in mz.pergamena con piatti marmorizzati. Opera articolata in 22 capitoli, corrispondenti ai 22 arcani Louis - Claude de Saint Martin (Amboise, 1743 - 1803), meglio conosciuto come il ?filosofo incognito? (?le philosophe inconnu?) frequentò la facoltà di giurisprudenza a Parigi tra il 1759 e il 1762, divenendo avvocato del Re al seggio presidenziale di Tours, ma dopo solamente sei mesi si dedicò alla carriera militare. Nel 1769 conobbe il suo maestro ed iniziatore, il nobile Jacques de Livron de la Tour de la Case Martines de Pasqually, fondatore del ?martinismo?, insieme al quale elaborò il rituale dei tre gradi azzurri, desunto dai tre gradi della Massoneria Universale, e il rituale del Grande Architetto dell?Universo. Trasferitosi a Lione, quivi pubblicò il suo primo lavoro nel 1775, ?Des Erreurs et de la Verité?. Avverso all?ateismo filosofico, e in seguito anche al materialismo rivoluzionario, fu attratto dal problema dell?origine del bene e del male. Partecipò alle operazioni teurgiche di Rosacroce, rifiutò di aderire al Convento dei Filaleti, e quindi si trasferì a Parigi, dove scrisse il presente ?Tableau naturel des rapports que existent entre Dieu, l?Homme et l?Univers?, in cui ribadisce i principi del martinismo. ?In quest?opera egli postula nell?uomo l?esistenza di facoltà superiori a quelle puramente sensoriali. L?uomo dipende sì dal mondo fisico da cui elabora le idee determinate dall?impressione esercitata sui suoi sensi, ma nello stesso tempo conserva in sé idee di legge, di ordine, di unità e di giustizia; la sua vita interiore ed esteriore si forma sia dalle sue idee intellettuali ed archetipe, sia dalle idee elaborate attraverso l?esperienza sensibile. La sua dipendenza da queste ultime è stata causata da un disordine inferiore che si è opposto ad una legge superiore, determinandone la caduta. Il suo principio superiore si è così ?sensibilizzato? e sono apparsi gli effetti dell?ordine e del disordine, del bene e del male, che non sarebbero certamente apparsi se l?uomo si fosse uniformato all?ordine dato da Dio. Ma poiché tutto tende a ritornare all?Unità che tutto ha emanato, l?uomo con il suo desiderio può reintegrarsi nell?unità primitiva attraverso il sacrificio del Riparatore? (Pietro Turchetti).

Garrison-Morton 3672.1 "One of the outstanding French dentists in the period following Fauchard's Chirurgien dentiste (1728) was Robert Bunon, who was the first to perform specialized odontological research. Dissatisfied with the incomplete coverage of dental problems that he found in the works of Fauchard and Gerauldy, Bunon addressed such issues as dental erosion, tooth development and the prophylaxis of dental caries and other maladies of the teeth in his Essay, the first of his important dental works. Three years later he published Expériences et demonstrations . . . pour servir de soute et de preuves à l'Essai . . . , in which he proved the assertions of his earlier Essay through a series of dental researches conducted on patients at the Salpêtrière and at the hospital of St. Côme-the first such ever performed. In this work he discussed for the first time the genesis of enamel hypoplasia (which he found was caused by various childhood diseases), as well as the prevention of tooth decay; he also included in it the first dental pharmacopeia.         Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde repésentées par des figures dessinées de la main de Bernard Picard [4 of 9 volumes]? [and:] Superstitions anciennes et modernes: prejugés vulgaires qui ont induit les peuples à des usages & à des pratiques contraires à la religion [2 volumes, complete]

      Amsterdam: J.-F. Bernard, 1743. First edition. Engraved title vignettes. Illustrated with engraved plates (several folding) after drawings by Bernard Picart (enumerated below). 6 vols. Folio. Handsomely bound in modern half brown morocco and cloth, with stamp of "Lincoln's Inn Library" at the foot of each spine, and the Library's bookplate on front pastedowns. Occasional spotting to a few pages of text and title, but the plates for the most part are crisp and clean, and all volumes are complete with half-titles. 147 Fine Plates by Picart This magnificent set, issued by the publisher Bernard over a period of 20 years, and rarely found complete, represents some of Picart's finest work. The encyclopedic text represents a compilation of extracts from the writings of several authors, including Le Brun, Thiers, Abbadie, Dupin, Boulainvilliers, et. al. - but it is the scope and beauty of Picart's engravings that gives the work its irresistible power. The titles and illustrations are as below: CEREMONIES: Vol. I : JUIFS ET CHRETIENS CATHOLIQUES. 1723. Frontispiece* and 35 engraved plates (several foldout). Vol. II: CATHOLIQUES. 1723. 27 engraved plates. Vol III: CEREMONIES ET COUTUMES RELIGIEUSE DES PEUPLES IDOLATRES. Part 1 (of 2). 1723. 47 engraved plates. Vol. IX: [SUPPLEMENT, Part 2 (of 2). 1743. 24 plates. SUPERSTITIONS: VOL. I. 11 plates VOL. II. 2 plates *This beautiful plate, representing all the major religions of the world, was issued in 1743, and, according to Brunet, "manque souvent.".
