Amsterdam, the widow Joachim Ottens and sons, [1719/25]. Oblong 1mo (34 x 39.5 cm). With engraved allegorical title-page (with the coats of arms of the province of Zeeland and 8 Zeeland cities) and 37 engraved plates (plate size 21 x 28 cm), including 2 different views of Middleburg from the harbour side (the earlier publications included one or the other). 19th-century gold-tooled sheepskin parchment.

Bodel Nijenhuis 1743?; STCN? (3 copies); De la Fontaine Verwey, "Vincent van Gogh, kunsthandelaar en bibliofiel", in: De Boekenwereld IV, pp. 14-21; De Vries, Catalogue de la bibliothèque privée de feu M. Vincent Van Gogh... mardi 15 et mercredi 16 janvier 1918, 463; cf. Hollstein XXVI, p. 168, 32; Kluiver, De cartons voor het Speculum Zelandiae (1989), p. 5. The bibliophile Vincent van Gogh's (1866-1911) copy (with his fine etched bookplate) of a beautiful book of 36 splendid large views of cities, towns, noblemen's estates, and castles in the Dutch province of Zeeland, with an elaborately decorated armorial title-page, first engraved in the years 1654 to 1662 and published by Zacharias Roman in Middelburg. The cities shown include Middelburg, Vlissingen, Goes, Zierikzee, Tholen and Veere. The title appears in an elaborate cartouche with the arms of Zeeland and of these six cities, with allegorical figures and a view of Middelburg with ships. The three views of Middelburg include two different views from the harbour side, one printed from Roman's first plate of ca. 1655, and the other from a plate that replaced it in publications between 1657 and 1660 (the earlier editions therefore included one or the other). The book is rarely found complete, as most copies were broken up and the cherished prints sold individually.Vincent van Gogh, nephew of the famous painter, was an art dealer and well known bibliophile. His copy of the Speculum Zelandia formed part of the final auction of his library in 1918. That auction contained a collection "not large in size but of high quality... one of the finest collections of Dutch books ever to have been amassed in our country" (De la Fontaine Verwey). With the beautiful etched bookplate of Van Gogh (by Marius Bauer), including a knight and two horses and the Van Gogh coat of arms; and a ca. 1900 bookplate of Theodoor Johan Verrijn Stuart (1869-1930). In very good condition and with the margins untrimmed, leaving the deckles intact. Some margins a bit frayed and spotted, a few marginal wormholes not approaching the plate edges, some minor stains in the last plate slightly affecting the image. Vincent van Gogh's copy of a magnificent book of 17th-century Zeeland views.

Copenhagen: Ernst Henrich Berling, 1743. Folio, with woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, and initials, engraved allegorical frontispiece and 68 full-page plates, mostly showing various formations, manoeuvring, and engagements of naval fleets; title-page with oval library stamp of "Søe Officerernes Bibliothek Stempel"; a fine, fresh copy in an attractive contemporary calf binding, decorative gilt borders to sides with the cipher of King Christian VII of Denmark at the centre. A wonderful royal copy of this splendid naval work, bound for Christian VII (1749-1808) who ruled as King of Denmark and Norway from 1766. This is the first edition of this important Danish work on naval manoeuvres, based on the French classic L'Art des Armées Navales by Père Paul l'Hoste, first published in Lyons in 1697.'Hoste's book was an immediate success and soon became very well known. It was republished in 1727. Over the course of the eighteenth century several books based on L'Art des Armées Navales were to appear. In 1743 C.F.L. Fontenay, an officer in the Danish Navy, published Søe-Evolutioner eller En Orlogs-Flodes... Although this book relied heavily on L'Art des Armées Navales it is not simply a translation of that work. De Fontenay revised much of the text, omitted many of the mathematical elements of Hoste's original, added much derived from his own experience as a naval officer and had the plates re-engraved...' (Hugh Cahill: see note below).Paul l'Hoste (1652-1700) was a Jesuit who served in the French navy as a chaplain. Despite his higher calling he was a gifted naval strategist who developed a system of tactics based on the single line ahead and the independent action of squadrons, using new ideas such as "doubling" and "breaking the line". His book was 'a standard work on naval tactics, which includes valuable accounts (with many engraved illustrations) of the battles of the Second Dutch War...' (National Maritime Museum Library Catalogue). Instructions are given for the fleet to sail out in an orderly formation, deploy for battle in line or column, retreat, cope with foul weather, and so on. The fine and detailed engravings illustrate how the ships of a fleet should shift from one formation to another. An excellent article on Hoste's book by Hugh Cahill appears in the King's College London "Book of the Month Archive" at www.kcl.ac.uk/depsta/iss/library/speccoll/bomarch/bomarch.html.         [...] Luciani Samosatensis Opera. [...] Cum Nova Versione Tiber. Hemsterhusii, & Io. Matthiae Gesneri [...] Cuius priorem partem summo studio curavit & illustravit Tiberius Hemsterhusius. [...] notasque suas adiecit Ioannes Fredericus Reitzius.

4 vols. (3 vols. Opera + later Index vol.), 4to., pp. [x], LXXII, 882 + 1 plate; [iv], 953, [i]; [iv], 860; [viii], XVI, 500, [iv]. Index volume lacks gathering 4D, and has the 'Index Criticus' bound before the main text (rather than its usual place at the rear). Half-titles to vols. I-III, title-pages in red and black with engraved printer's devices except vol.IV which has a woodcut decoration. Woodcut initials, engraved head- and tail-pieces, occasional illustrations in the text. Parallel columns of Greek text and Latin translation, Latin footnotes. Some light foxing mostly restricted to front and rear, occasional dustiness to some head margins and final leaves, a little toning to Index vol. around text, to vol.III a slight separation between gatherings A and B. Contemporary vellum, titles inked to spines, raised bands, boards blindstamped, edges heavily sprinkled red. Light smudgy marks and a few small stains, lower corner of vol. III's upper board curved inwards a little but a very good, attractive set. Bound uniformly with our stock number 51574, Burmann's Virgil (1746). The famous three-volume edition of Lucian by the eminent 18th-century classicist Tiberius Hemsterhuis (1685-1766), together with a fourth volume of indices produced three years later by Conrad Reitz. In 1824 Jacob Geel published a further 66-page volume of Hemsterhusius' annotations which had been supposed to have been burnt, but had in fact been preserved in Leiden public library. 'This is not only the most beautiful, but the most accurate and complete edition of Lucian that has ever been published: the editors were Hemsterhusius, J.M. Gesner, and Reitzius. The greater part of the first volume was particularly the production of Hemsterhusius, and it contains a rich find of the most curious and profound criticism relating to Lucian; the second and third volumes were completed chiefly by J. Reitzius; the fourth volume [...] was compiled by Conrad Reitzius, the brother: Gesner had the care of the Latin version, which is a very excellent one, and accompanied with useful notes. The high character which this edition has long borne in the classical world, makes it unnecessary to give minute description of its contents [...]' (Dibdin). 'Édition la plus estimée de cet auteur' (Brunet).

A Voyage to the South Seas, in the Years 1740-1.

London: Jacob Robinson, 1743. Octavo, in contemporary sprinkled sheep. First edition of one of the classic stories of shipwreck survival: the loss of the Wager. This famous account jointly written by the gunner and the carpenter on the Wager describes the wreck of the ship, one of Anson's fleet, off the coast of Chile, the survivors' life on shore, and their subsequent voyage in a longboat through the Straits of Magellan to Rio de Janeiro. As Spate has remarked, 'For wild drama, or melodrama, very few tales of the sea can match this of the Wager'.Like Anson's official account of the full expedition this was a popular book and went through a number of editions. There were two editions in the first year of publication, one as here giving the authors' names on the title-page and the other anonymously published. Covers repaired. A good copy.

De Fontenay revised much of the text, omitted many of the mathematical elements of Hoste's original, added much derived from his own experience as a naval officer and had the plates re-engraved... ' (Hugh Cahill: see note below).Paul l'Hoste (1652-1700) was a Jesuit who served in the French navy as a chaplain. Despite his higher calling he was a gifted naval strategist who developed a system of tactics based on the single line ahead and the independent action of squadrons, using new ideas such as "doubling" and "breaking the line". His book was 'a standard work on naval tactics, which includes valuable accounts (with many engraved illustrations) of the battles of the Second Dutch War... ' (National Maritime Museum Library Catalogue). Joints skilfully repaired.

The book was published in eight fascicules, each with a separate title-page, beginning in 1743 and ending in 1756. "Although nearly ten different engravers prepared plates for the book, the plates are all of high quality and are clear, artistic, and exact renditions of their subject. The plates depict nearly all the arteries of the human body as well as the various organs. There are special plates of the heart, omentum, base of the skull, diaphragm, uterus, and spinal cord" (Heirs of Hippocrates). The complete work contains a total of forty-seven plates by Joel Paul Kaltenhofer (d. 1777), C. J. Rollinus, and others. "The order of the subjects is purely accidental, depending upon the author's occasional necessities of making some accurate dissections of certain organs. Besides the general views of the system of the arteries of the whole body, as given in the last four plates, various other plates represent on a larger scale almost all the arteries of special sites and organs, with the surrounding parts. Then there will further be found special representations of the diaphragm, the spinal cord, the uterus and its appendages, the omentum, the base of the skull, and the heart. This work will always remain the main source of information for accurate anatomic studies, especially of the arteries and the viscera" (Choulant-Frank, p.290). Very Good....

A La Haye (Paris), 1743. - in-8. 2ff. 251pp. [Attributes: First Edition]

A Prospect of the Chee-Torr &c. on the River Wie, Two Miles below Buxton

[No place], 1743. Etching by Thomas Smith with engraving by Gérard Scotin on laid paper, coloured by hand. (Corners rounded, two expertly repaired tears to upper blank margin). A rare example from a series that was the first to display the picturesque nature of English landscapes."Landscape prints encouraged admiration of natural scenery and native landscape painters sought British scenes to rival those found [abroad]... In stimulating an appetite for British beauty Thomas Smith of Derby... was a pivotal figure. A subscription for "eight of the most extraordinary Natural Prospects in the Mountainous Part of Derbyshire and Staffordshire, commonly called the peak" was proposed in June 1743... these landscapes... represent the first English appearance of the precipices and cascades that Burke would later call sublime.'(T. Clayton The English Print, 1997, p.157).This print, drawn and etched by Smith, depicts a cascade in the River Wye surrounded by the limestone walls of Chee Tor in Derbyshire.

A fine copy. ----Norman 974; Choulant-Frank, pp. 289-90; Heirs of Hippocrates 881; Garrison-Morton 397; Osler 1153; Wailer 4011; Wellcome III, p.198; Roberts & Tomlinson pp. 347-356. - ¬FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE WITH ALL 8 PARTS PRESENT.

With 3 different engraved frontispieces, 1 large engraved folding map, 445 (of 473) engraved illustration plates numbered in 5 series plus 1 plate by Seligmann numbered "115" in part 4 but not normally included. With all the usual illustration plates (plus the map) coloured by a contemporary or near contemporary hand, but the extra plate uncoloured. Near contemporary uniform gold-tooled calf, gilt edges.

      - Anker 462; Fine Bird Books, p. 73; Nissen, Vogelbücher 857. First German edition, with the plates newly made for this edition and including new material, the text combining German translations by Georg Leonhard Huth of three important English ornithological works: George Edwards's A natural history of uncommon birds (1743-1751) and Gleanings of natural history (1758-1764), and Mark Catesby's Natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (second ed. 1748-1754). Seligmann (1720-1762) brought these materials together and engraved the illustration plates and two of the frontispieces. The book is especially strong for American and Asian birds. The parts and plates were published in instalments and while many copies lack the whole of part 9, the present copy includes the plates and accompanying leaves of text of this part up to plate XXIV. It further includes one (uncoloured) plate, a portrait of an indigenous North American man, not recorded in the literature, though engraved by Seligmann. With 2 tears in the folding map, almost entirely in the sea, but generally in very good condition. The bindings are slightly scuffed and have some professional restorations along the extremities, but are otherwise very good with most of the tooling clear.
