[France], 1743. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to manuscript on paper [297 x 173 mm]. (2) pp., 384 pp, (4) pp. Bound in contemporary vellum over boards, manuscript title on spine, remnants of ties, red sprinkled edges. Some joint separation at head and tail of upper cover, minor rubbing, some staining and scoring to the covers. Narrow margins with edge occasionally touching a letter but with no loss of text, a few minor stains, otherwise excellently preserved and perfectly legible throughout. Unpublished autograph manuscript by the French nobleman and traveller Louis de Chancel de Lagrange (1678-1747) documenting his extraordinary world travels between 1692 and 1704. Lagrange provides an eyewitness account of the groundbreaking 1698-1700 trading expedition to Canton made by the frigate L'Amphitrite, considered the "the first voyage of the French to China" (p. 207; see also Lach and Van Kley, p. 104), as well as first-hand information concerning Louis XIV's various military campaigns during the Nine Years' War (1688-1697), including accounts of the Siege of Namur (1692) and the Raid on Cartagena (1697). Over the nearly 400 closely written pages of his manuscript Lagrange also provides insider knowledge on current politics, court intrigue, and the like, all the while carefully describing the architecture, natural setting, and inhabitants of the some 200 towns and cities he visited in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Lagrange, a native of Périgueux, begins his manuscript with an account of his early childhood, noting that unlike his older brother, François Joseph Lagrange-Chancel (1677-1758), the child-prodigy dramatist once thought to be the next Racine, he struggled with formal education, preferring to make paper boats over reading books and drafting essays (p. 1). Sent to Paris at the age of twelve to serve as a page in the household of Marie Anne de Bourbon, daughter of Louis XIV and his mistress Louise de La Vallière, Lagrange soon lost his "Gascogne accent" (p. 5) and was tutored under the finest masters of mathematics, geography, science, drawing and dance. Not yet sixteen years old, Lagrange joined the navy in 1694, taking part in Louis XIV's Catalonia campaign (1694), battling Spain in the Azores (1696), and in the West Indies privateering at the Siege of Cartagena (1697), with the latter engagement extensively described (pp. 119-151) both in terms of military matters and of the layout, inhabitants and customs of the city itself (Saint-Domingue and Havana are also discussed)............. * Paul Pelliot, "L'origine des relations de la France et de la Chine: Premier voyage de 'l'Amphitrite' en Chine," Journal de savants, (1928) pp. 433-51 and (1929) pp. 110-25, 252-67, and 289-98; E.         Vestibolo d’antico Tempio

1743 - Acquaforte, bulino e puntasecca, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Etching, engraving and drypoint. Example of the fourth state of five. From "Opere Varie di Architettura Prospettive Grotteschi Antichità Inventate ed incise da Giambattista Piranesi Architetto Veneziano". A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, with wide margins, perfect condition. Opere Varie This is the first publication by the young artist, who had just arrived in Rome. The outcome is not entirely unitary, characterised by noticeable stylistic differences between plates, but is endowed with great charm and already bestows a glimpse on Piranesi's future artistic development. This work followed established traditional models, which included caprices, views, scene paintings and architectural treatises. However, if one analyses the artist's biography, this work can be interpreted as the outcome of a crisis in his role as an architect and of an intensely lived internal conflict. Summarising, the consequence of a contrast between a mentality still associated with Venetian culture, heir to the poetry of ruins evoked by Marco Ricci and upheld by Bellotto and Canaletto, and the new architectural erudition which was beginning to develop in Piranesi, the First Part of Architectures., together with the imaginary architectural compositions which follow it, are an important step toward the objective which he strove for in the introduction to this work: to utilise the architectural caprice as a means to free architecture from the chains of the material world and society in order to transform it into a truly liberal art. The popular success of this program was immediate. As we have written before, the first version of this work dates from 1743 and was dedicated to Nicola Giobbe, an important impresario at the service of the Apostolic Chamber, who was also the young Venetian architect's benefactor. At a later time, it was inserted into a larger collection which also comprised the Capric [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Set printed at London, 1743-1745. First edition. An attractive set, tall and fine, of Pococke’s description of the journey he undertook to the East between 1737 and 1740. Richard Pococke ( 1704-1765) studied at Christi College Oxford and was appointed to the precentorship of Lismore Cathedral. Between 1733 and 1736 he toured in Europe and planned a visit to the East. He reached Alexandria at the end of September 1737 and traveled south into upper Egypt, passing the traveled Frederick Lewis Norden in the night as he was returning and Nordon was going up the Nile. From Cairo Pococke went Jerusalem and Northern Palestine where he explored Baalbeck. He remained three years in Eastern Mediterranean, visiting, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Asia Minor, and Greece. He also spent some time in Germany and Switzerland in 1741 before returning to England in 1742. A year later he published the first part of his Description, on Egypt, and then in 1745 the second part of the remainder of the journey. The work was translated into German and published in 3 volumes at Erlangen in 1754-5; a French edition appeared at Paris in 1772-3 ( 6 Vols.) and a Dutch edition ( 6 Vols.) appeared in 177686 at Utrecht. The plates of antiquities are after drawings by Pococke himself; however the illustrations of the monuments of Athens were not drawn on the spot. Pococke achieved great reputation with this publication; the work was very popular during his lifetime and was praised by Gibbon. Pococke also published a catalogue of his numismatic finds in Egypt: Inscriptionum Antiquarum, 1752. [ Blackmer 1323; Brunet IV, 750; Weber 513; Tobler pp. 127-8; Hilmy II 124; Atabey 958].         Seasonable Thoughts on the State of Religion in New England…

Boston: Rodgers and Fowle, 1743. 8vo, contemporary paneled calf, rebacked, with new endpapers, red morocco label on spine, 424 pp. Lacking upper corner of title page, but not affecting text, binding with some wear, and rubbing, signature on title, mended tear on first leaf, some foxing and aging, especially on title and first leaf. Charles Chauncy (1705-1787) was considered one of the most influential clergymen of his time. He graduated from Harvard in 1721, and became the pastor of the First Church of Boston, where he presided for 60 years. He had an interesting career and published many tracts on important subjects, and even managed to have three wives along the way. He became the leader of the “Old Lights” or liberals in theology, and was also the leader in the opposition to the establishment of an “Anglican bishopric in the American colonies.” During the American Revolution, he supported the cause in his sermons and pamphlets. He is probably best known for this work "Seasonable Thoughts on the State of Religion in New England." DAB Vol.II. Evans 5151.

A Proposal to Determine our Longitude

Second edition. 8vo. 200x125mm. pp. unnumbered half-title, (3), folding table and explanatory notes entitled "Lodgitude", 5-160. The contents pages (L1-L2) have, as is usual, been bound after page 152 (the end of the main text) and before the postscript which starts on p154 (153 being blank). Contemporary tan calf with single line gilt border to upper and lower covers. Five raised bands and six compartments with gilt borders. Second compartment has a black morocco label with "Squire On the Longit" tooled in gold. In the centre of both upper and lower covers is a black morocco roundel with a decorative gilt roll. The roundel is divided into four quadrants by crossed gold lines and each quadrant contains a design based on the symbols used by Jane Squire to demonstrate her theories. This use of decoration on the cover relating to the contents of the book is unusual before the nineteenth century and Squire's "Proposal" is an extremely rare example of the practice in the eighteenth century. This is a near-fine binding with a little looseness to the hinges and some minor staining to the foot of the upper and lower covers. The contents are in fine condition with no foxing. There are some very light pencil lines in the margins made by a previous reader to note important points in the text. Overall, this is a very nice copy of a comparatively rare volume. In 1714, Parliament formed a committee for discovering a system of determining longitude. The large prize of £20,000 (about £1.5m today) was won by John Harrison. Jane Squire was the only woman who entered the competition without hiding her sex behind a pseudonym. Squire was born in 1671 and died in 1743 (as this second edition was being published). She is rare in being an educated female mathematician and scientist at a time when women's education was largely ignored altogether. Jane Squire began by writing an eleven page pamphlet in 1731 but it seems that this was largely ignored. Her "Proposal to Determine our Longitude" was a fuller sequel to that pamphlet. The first edition of this work was published in 1741 in English and French. This second edition, in English only, contains the Proposal itself taken from the original pamphlet, together with her correspondence to and from the MPs who served on the longitude committee. In her letters Squire complains how her proposal was not taken seriously and it seems clear that this was, in large part, because she was a woman. Whilst her ideas were never likely to win the competition - even admirers admit that they were impractical - she was undoubtedly the victim of some prejudice and her book is a valuable insight into the experience of women in science in the eighteenth century. Modern scholarship is now taking Squire seriously, not so much for her ideas on longitude, but for her pioneering role as a female scientist and an educated woman.

Hanmer's Shakespeare was published at Oxford in 1743-44, with nearly forty illustrations by Francis Hayman and Hubert Gravelot. Anno 1743. [Sluis (in Zeeland), 1743]. Folio (33 x 21 cm). Manuscript written in Dutch, in brown ink on paper, with the coat of arms of the district Vrije van Sluis on the title-page coloured by a contemporary hand in opaque gouaches and gold. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

      - A manuscript compiled in 1743, at least partly by Adriaan Reynesteyn (b. ca. 1700?), born, married and living in Sluis, transcribing ten extensive manuscripts (and adding two indexes) containing official documents of the district known as Het Vrije van Sluis, in southwestern Zeeland on what is now the Dutch-Belgian border. The manuscripts transcribed range in date from 1542 to 1695 and record the district's statutes, ordinances, regulations for the division and inheritance of land, rules of litigation, remuneration of district officials for various services, and feudal, customary and common law. At the end of each section, the compiler gives the date and source of the original manuscript, the name of the registrar who signed the original and often the names of the burgomasters and other officials. One notes that Adriaan Reynesteyn made the present copy on 29 October 1743 and many, but not all, appear to be in the same hand.On 5 pages the last letter or number of some lines has been shaved, but can still be read. Otherwise in very good condition, with only some small worm holes in the head of the gutter margin in the first few quires. The binding is scuffed and has a few tears. A wealth of important material for the history of the district Het Vrije van Sluis in Zeeland.

D'Alembert's principle. First edition of this landmark in the history of mechanics. "This book, D'Alembert's magnum opus, was one of the first to give a unified view of mechanics. It started out from a minimum of principles, one of which came to be named after him." (Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, ch. 11). ❧ PMM 195; Norman 31; Roberts & Trent 7; Stanitz 56. "The 'Treatise on Dynamics' was d'Alembert's first major book and it is a landmark in the history of mechanics. It reduces the laws of the motion of bodies a law of equilibrium. Its statement that 'the internal for of inertia must be equal and opposite to the forces to produce the acceleration' is still known as d'Alembert's principle.' This principle is applied to many phenomena and, in particular, to the theory of the motion of fluids. It has become useful in the practical solution of many technical and mechanical problems, and is as import for the motion of bodies as is the principle of virtual velocities for their equilibrium" (PMM). "The treatise itself consists of two parts; the first defines the general laws of motion and the equilibrium of bodies, while the second considers the general principles of move¬ment of several bodies acted upon by each other. D'Alembert's work is at least as important as that of Laplace and exceeds the practical and engineering utility of Des¬cartes. In essence, d'Alembert and Coriolis provided engineers with two of the tools necessary to practice their profession." (Roberts & Trent). This work was the foundation for Lagrange's classic book on analytical mechanics which codified the laws governing the motions of any systems of bodies. D'Alembert is also credited with laying to rest, in the Traite, the vis viva controversy by investigating its philosophical basis and dismissing its ontological reality. "In this way d'Alembert was clearly a precursor of positivistic science" (DSB). D'Alembert was the scientific editor of the Encyclopédie, and his preface to the Traité de dynamique sets out his philosophy of science and his recognition of the conceptual revolution catalysed by Newton. 4to (220 x 168 mm), pp [4] xxvi [2] 186 [2] and four folding engraved plates of diagrams, vignette by Duflos on title. Contemporary calf with gilt spine and red spine label, some wear to extremeties, but completely unrestored.
