A Treatise of Fluxions. In Two Books

41 folding engraved plates. 3 p.l., vi, 412 pp.; 1 p.l., 413-763, [1] pp. Two vols. 4to, cont. calf, spines nicely gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines. Edinburgh: T.W. & T. Ruddimans, 1742. First edition-- and a very handsome set printed on large and thick paper -- of the most important early presentation of Newton's calculus. "Maclaurin's Treatise of Fluxions (1742) has been described as the earliest logical and systematic publication of the Newtonian methods. It stood as a model of rigor until the appearance of Cauchy's Cours d'analyse in 1821...The Treatise is otherwise noteworthy for the solution of a great number of problems in geometry, statics, and the theory of attractions. It contains an elaborate discussion of infinite series, including Maclaurin's text for convergence, as well as a remarkable investigation of curves of quickest descent and various isoperimetrical problems...Maclaurin also elaborated many of the principles enunciated by Newton in the Principia in this work, including problems in applied geometry and physics, grounded on the geometry of Euclid."-D.S.B., VIII, pp. 610-11. It incorporates in a revised form his On the Percussion of Bodies, the memoir published in 1724 which gained Maclaurin the prize of l'Académie Royale des Sciences. A fine, handsome, and crisp set with the armorial bookplate of Col. George Callander of Craigforth. From the library of Haskell F. Norman with bookplate. This has become a scarce book, especially in such fine condition. .

A True and Exact Draught of the Tower Liberties survey'd in the year 1597 by Gulielmus Haiward and J. Gascoyne.

1742 - London: Society of Antiquaries, 1742. 415 x 550mm. Blind stamp of the Hull Public Library in margin. This survey of the Tower and its immediate environs, surveyed in 1597 to settle a dispute over jurisdiction between the Tower authorities and the City of London. As the monarch's property, the Tower of London always had the status of a 'Liberty', independent of both the City of London or the County of Middlesex. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries land outside the moat was added to Henry VIII's property, so that the 'Liberties of the Tower of London' included both Tower Hill and East Smithfield. On the 29th June 1595 trouble broke out on Tower Hill, with a crowd of over a thousand gathered to protest against an unpopular Major of London. When the Major sent the Tower Street Watch to Tower Hill to quell the disturbance, Sir Michael Blount, Lieutenant of the Tower, felt his authority was being undermined and turned out the Tower guards to repell the Major's men, which was done with force. The Tower Hill Riot is considered one of the most dangerous urban uprising of the century and the response was harsh, with Queen Elizabeth putting the City under martial law. The rioters were held to have crossed the line between riot and rebellion and five were hung, drawn and quartered on Tower Hill. This plan was commissioned by the Privy Council to determine the extent of the Tower Liberties, in order to clarify jurisdiction. Judging in the Tower's favour, they also increased the size of the garrison and recommended further fortification to secure the Tower from further unrest.

Maupertuis (1698 - 1759) studied mathematics in Paris and became converted to Newtonian mechanics during a visit to London in 1728. This was his first published work and is considered the first unequivocal Newtonian text to come from a French scientist. "In it he objected to Cartesianism on the ground that it was unable to explain why Kepler's laws should hold." In his second book La Figure de la Terre (1738) he published the results of an expedition with the scientist Clairaut to Lapland to measure as accurately as possible the length of a degree of longitude, by which he was able to prove Newton's theory that the earth was flattened at the poles.

Diba, p. 82. Cfr. De Backer-Sommervogel, II, 977. Auger e Weiss in Michaud, Biogr. Universelle, VII, 527-528. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Carte Du Royaume De Danemarc.[Denmark]

Amsterdam: Cóvens & Mortier, [1742]. - Engraved with period outline colour. Plate size: 607 x 490 mm. This map of Denmark originally comes from a Dutch edition of De L'Isle's work entitled: Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. Par Guillaume de l'Isle. Premier Géographe de sa Majesté. Published by Covens and Mortier. Pieter and David Mortier were brothers of French extraction whose publishing interests covered a wide field embracing French, English and Dutch works. Pieter was probably trained in the bookselling business in Paris and David spent many years in England, acquiring British nationality and dying there in about 1728. After Pieter's death, his widow continued the business until their son, Cornelis, was able to take over. Then in 1721, Cornelis entered into partnership with his brother-in-law, Johannes Covens, to form the firm which continued in existence, with only a slight change of name, until the middle of the nineteenth century. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini. Under Cassini's direction, observations were taken from locations all over the world that enabled much more accurate longitudinal calculations to be made. De l'Isle carried on this work, constantly revising and improving his maps, which as a result are both accurate and attractive. In perfect original condition, with no marks or staining.         Acta Apostolorum Arabice (Hindostanice).

Halae, Institutum Judaicum, 1742..
