Index Testarum Conchyliorum quae adservantur in Museo Nicolai Gualtieri... et methodice distributae exhibentur tabulae CX.

Florence, C. Albizzini, 1742. Folio (464 x 325mm). pp xxiii [including frontispiece], (1); ff. 126, with engraved frontispiece, portrait, 110 numbered full-page plates, 17 vignettes on section titles, 18 other vignettes and plates in text, 2 initials, main title and section titles in red and black. Early 19th century half calf, richly gilt decorated spine in 6 compartments (short split to joint of frontcover). A fine large uncut copy of the first edition of this beautiful shell book. Niccolo Gualtieri (1688-1744) was a professor at the University of Pisa and physician to Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany. The Duke was a keen collector and had a magnificent cabinet of shells including 360 species sent to him by Rumphius, and many of the duplicates were given to Gualtieri. The present work shows Gualtieri's collection and is one of the most curious and beautiful books on shells ever published. Many of the shells are depicted standing on their apices. Both engraving and typography is exceptional. The vignettes show marine scenes and corals. The engravings are by P.A. Pazzi after drawings by Giuseppe Menabuoni (1708 - after 1745)./Gualtieri's collection is extant and can be found in the Museo Storia Naturale in Pisa. Many pages have a circular library stamp of Academie de Macon at the outer margin not affecting the illustration.//Nissen ZBI, 1736.

(Edición ilustrada de esta obra muy popular; consiste en una colección de cartas supuestamente escritas por un agente turco, que inspiró a muchos escritores del siglo XVIII, tanto por su enfoque satírico como por el tema oriental). [Illustrated edition of this enormously popular work . The first volume is generally attributed to Giovanni Paolo Marana and subsequent volumes have ben variously attributed. It was originally published over 10 years between 1684 and 1694 and the first collected edition, under a general title page, was issued in the latter year. The work which consists of a collection of letters supposedly written by a Turkish agent, has been regarded both as the ancestor of a long line of spy works and travel journals and as a major work of late seventeenth-century liberalism with its discussion of a wide range of the major themes of the Enlightenment. It inspired several eighteenth-century writers not only with its unusual material about the East but also in its approach to satire. With a map of Constantinople] ORIENTE

THE CHRISTIAN'S PATTERN: OR, A TREATISE OF THE IMITATION OF JESUS CHRIST . . . TO WHICH ARE ADDED, MEDITATIONS AND PRAYERS FOR SICK PERSONS

London: printed for B. Barker [and others], 1742. 13th Edition (according to the title page) n. Hardcover. With the Most Elaborate, Delicate, and Precise Gilt Decoration a Fabulously Wealthy Owner Could Buy. 203 x 127 mm (8 x 5"). 6 p.l., 339, [3], 45, [1] pp. Translated by George Stanhope. 13th Edition (according to the title page). ANIMATED CONTEMPORARY BLACK MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT, covers with a central cottage-roof design enclosed by ornate floral rolls and small tools, the "roof" frame containing a large and elaborate fleuron within a lozenge of small tools; raised bands, spine gilt in compartments bordered by plain rules and dogtooth rolls, each compartment divided into quarters by gilt diagonal lines, each quarter with a delicate stippled floral tool, red morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece of the Crucifixion, plus engravings of the Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Christ in the wilderness, and the Last Supper. Front pastedown with 18th century armorial bookplate of Fane William Sharpe, "Student of Ch[rist] Ch[urch, Oxford]"; front free endpaper with 18th or 19th century armorial bookplate of W. Combes. Spine faded to a pleasing hazel brown, a little rubbing to joints and extremities, minor chafing to boards, occasional faint foxing, isolated dust soiling to head edge, other trivial imperfections, but a fine copy nevertheless, the leaves clean and fresh, and the intricately tooled unsophisticated binding very lustrous and showing no significant wear. This is a splendidly bound copy of Stanhope's extremely popular translation of Thomas à Kempis, which was first published in 1698 and was printed more than 30 times over the next 150 years. The very intricate binding incorporates tools and designs somewhat similar--but not identical--to those of Christopher Chapman (especially the pointillé paisleys and the unusual trefoil in the outer border). Chapman (d. 1756) was the son of a London bookseller who served a 15-year apprenticeship to William Sparkes, beginning in 1704. He set up business in Duck Lane in 1720, and became one of the chief binders for the Harleian collection, travelling to Cambridgeshire to work on the library. Whoever executed this binding was an artisan of great skill. In comparing its designs and tooling to other cottage roof bindings of the period, as pictured in the British Library's Database of Bookbindings, Maggs, Nixon, and other standard reference works, one is struck by the precision and delicacy of the decoration. The lines are perfectly straight and the complicated design is absolutely symmetrical. The outer line of the "cottage roof" is executed in the pointillé style, something that would require great skill and dexterity to do as perfectly as it is done here. The original owner of this work, for whom it was no doubt bound, was Fane William Sharpe (ca. 1729-71), only son of John Sharpe, the British government's agent in the West Indies, and heir to a great fortune--exactly the sort of person who would employ the finest craftsman to bind his books. Young Sharpe was a student at Oxford at the time he received this volume, but went on to take over his father's seat in Parliament. While copies of this work are not uncommon, it is most fortunate to find one in such an attractive and well-preserved contemporary binding.

Brunet, V, 406.

The Virgin Unmask'd: Or, Female Dialogues, betwixt an Elderly Maiden Lady, and her Niece, On Several Diverting Discourses on Love, Marriage, Memoirs, Morals, &c. of the Times. The Fourth Edition.

London: Printed for T. Cooper. 1742 - 8vo, 165 x 97 mms., pp. x, [8], [17] - 232, 235 - 239 [240 blank], contemporary calf, neatly rebacked and binding restored, new morocco label; title-page soiled, text fingered, pages toned, lightly browned to margins, several leaves nicked/ chipped to fore-edges, into text at pp. 35, some scattered smudging and marking, ink spotting to a few margins, corners turned/ creased at points, a few upper leaves dampstained to lower margin. Admonishing her niece for revealing so much of her cleavage in his upper garment, the "Maiden Lady" seems to anticipate the burka: "Women, in strictness, should never appear in Public but veil'd; at least Young Women should never shew their Faces to any Men, but their nearest Relations." As ODNB notes, the work begins in almost pornographic fashion, but "quickly disappeared as the discussion turned to the undesirability of marriage and the harmful effects of child bearing on women, two proto-novels, and a discussion of the dangers posed by Louis XIV to Europe's peace and security." Mandeville 1630 - 1733) published this in 1709. ESTC T57159 locates copies in BL, Bodleian, TCD, Leeds Brotherton; Duke, McGill, UCLA.

        pl. VII F. Aculeatus (coral)

A wonderfully detailed hand colored copperplate engraving by John Stackhouse (1742-1819) from his book "Nereis Britannica; or A Botanical Description of the British Marine Plants" which was published in Bath by S. Hazard in 1795. Overall this print measures 16.5" x 10.75”. John Stackhouse was born at Trehane, Cornwall in 1742. He attended Oxford in 1758, eventually studying marine biology in the Mediterranean. He was particularly interested in seaweed and other marine plant life. He married Susanna Acton in 1773. Shortly thereafter the pair decided to build a house on the southern coast of England around Cuddon Point so that John could continue his study of seaweed. Later, he moved to the coastal area now known as Stackhouse Cove, and in honor of his wife, built Acton Castle. He was elected as one of the earliest members of the Linnean Society in 1795. In 1795 his studies and illustrations of seaweed of the Southern coast of England culminated in his publication of Nereis Brittanica or A Botanical Description of the British Marine Plants in Latin and English, Accompanied with Drawings from Nature. This unusual and rare work is the first English volume devoted marine plant life. It is also important in the field of marine biology for Stackhouse’s new approach to classifying the plants. The outstanding hand-colored copperplates were engraved from drawings by both Stackhouse and Thomas Velley. Overall this print is in good condition with some light foxing and staining, and evidence of previous binding in left margin. The left and right margins have both been cropped down.

Franciscisci Blanchini Veronensis Utriusque Signaturæ Referendarii, & Prælati Domestici, de Tribus Generius Instrumentorum Musicæ Veterum Organicæ Dissertatio.

Romæ Impensis Fausti Amidei Bibliopolæ in via Cursus. Ex Typgraphia Bernabò & Lazzarini 1742 - FIRST EDITION. Large 4to, xi [xii blank], 58, 8 full-page engraved plates of musical instruments, 5 engraved vignettes, contemporary vellum, with the armorial book plate of E. de Blavette on the front paste-down end-paper; fore-margins of first few leaves slightly frayed, slight wear to binding, but generally a very good copy. Francesco Bianchini [1662-1729] was librarian to Cardinal Ottoboni, later Pope Alexander VIII, in Rome. He seems to have been a much respected antiquary who enjoyed considerable Papal patronage. Bianchini's name is often spelled Blanchini, but it seems to be one and the same person. Graesse in his 'Supplement' of 1869 lists the work under Bianchini gives these as alternative spellings for the same person. [With thanks to John Wilbraham for this information.] This seems to be a work that Bianchini compiled as librarian, and it was not published in its lifetime. At the Wolffheim sale in 1928 - 1929, a copy sold for £100. Eitner II, 32. Wolffheim, I, 1126. Legacy of Sebastian Virdung(Grolier Club, 2005), no. 38. [Attributes: First Edition]
