      - Stafleu & Cowan 7222; Nissen, ZBI 3067. First edition of the Dutch translation of a detailed work on corals and sponges by the German zoologist and botanist Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811). In this work, originally entitled Elenchus zoophytorum sistensbgenerum adumbrationes generaliores, first published as a part of Pallas's Miscellanea zoologica, Pallas presents an innovative classification of corals and sponges just after they had been transferred from the plant to the animal kingdom. The Dutch naturalist translator Pieter Boddaert (1694-1760) added some of his own observations and made the drawings for the copperplates. In 1766 Pallas published his Miscellanea Zoologica, which included the descriptions of several new vertebrates, which he had discovered in Dutch museum collections. His new system of animal classification was praised by Georges Cuvier and others. Some black spots on the first 15 leaves, not affecting the text, a small marginal water stain near the end and a large stain on pp. 289-304 and 548-560 from a previously inserted document, edges of the plates slightly frayed. Binding rubbed along the extremities, corners bumped. Overall in good condition.

(I.E. 240) ; (4) 280pp., 6 parties en 3 volumes reliés. WEST INDIES / WAR OF JENKINSÕ EAR: GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PRINCIPAL OBJECTS OF THE PRESENT WAR IN THE WEST-INDIES, VIZ. CARTAGENA, PUERTO BELLO, LA VERA CRUZ, THE HAVANA, AND SAN AGUSTIN, SHEWING THEIR SITUATION, STRENGTH, TRADE, &.

London: printed for T Gardner at CowleyÕs-Head without Temple-Bar; J Carter at the Royal Exchange; T Cooper in Paternoster Row; J Jollyffe in St JamesÕs Street; and H Chapelle in Grosvenor-Street 1741 - 8¡ (21.5 x 14 cm / 8.5 x 5.5 inches): Collation Complete - Folding Map + viii + 192 pages (pp.97-104 mispaginated as pp. 89 - 96) + 1 map (between pp. 84 & 85), bound in modern tan polished quarter-calf and marbled boards (Very Good, wide margins with some pages uncut, some light foxing, especially to folding map and title page, small marginal tear to upper right corner of title). A scarce and fascinating British work on the Spanish Caribbean colonies and the history of the Anglo-Spanish rivalry in the region, issued at the height of the War of JenkinsÕ Ear. This attractive and intriguing work was issued in London in December 1740, during the height of the War of JenkinsÕ Ear (1739-42), a dramatic contest between Britain and Spain for domination of the West Indies. The conflict was a major media sensation in Britain, as the public had an insatiable thirst for information on the events that occurred in such a far away and exotic theatre. It also presented an opportunity for the British government, aided by jingoistic publishers, to develop BritainÕs first modern propaganda campaign, which sought to exaggerate BritainÕs victories and minimize (or erase) any mention of her defeats. The West Indies possessed a special place in the 18th Century British psyche. Its sugar colonies in the region, such as Jamaica and Barbados, were sources of immense wealth. The area was also where legendary British adventurers and pirates, such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir Henry Morgan made their names, conjuring up romantic adventure and visions of great treasures. The region also offered Britain the chance to capture further plunder from the vast, yet declining Spanish American empire. That all being said, while the Spanish Caribbean occupied an outsized place in the British consciousness, it was actually little know by the vast majority of Britons. The present work sought to inform the British public of the region and its history, in a manner that supported the British propaganda campaign. It is written in a succinct, yet lively, manner, making pleasant reading for both the contemporary and todayÕs audiences.SEE OUR WEB-SITE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION References: Cundall, West Indies, 2023; ESTC: T40779; European Americana, 741/94; Howes, G103.         A Description of the Empire of China and Chinese-Tartary, Together with the Kingdoms of Korea, and Tibet...

London: printed by T. Gardner for Edward Cave, 1738-1741. Two volumes, large folio, with 51 maps and plans (most folding) and 13 plates; in original blind stamped calf, panelled in gilt between raised bands. A very attractive copy of Du Halde's magnum opus, the fullest expression of Enlightenment views on China, with a superb series of maps and views. This first English folio edition was carefully re-translated from the original French edition with the addition of a new suite of finely engraved maps designed to improve upon the French originals. This splendid large folio version took the place of the small octavo translation which had been hurried to the press following the magnificent French edition of 1735. In his lengthy preface, the publisher Cave claims to have improved upon du Halde's work in a number of respects, boasting better organisation and structure, clear and literal translation from the French, improved maps and a new standardised orthography of Chinese for European use. Löwendahl attributes the translation to William Guthrie and an Irish assistant who worked under Cave's scrutiny 'to give a faithful version of the Author's Sense in the fewest words, and to avoid a disagreeable style.'This edition did improve the standardisation of place names and proper nouns that marked du Halde's original (a result of its compilation from diverse missionary authors). By doing so it 'established the orthographic conventions by which Chinese has been represented in English until very recently' (DNB). Furthermore, Cave lavished great expense on having the maps reproduced in their entirety, checking and cross referencing place names and adding engraved notes from the relevant texts to illuminate the understanding of his readers. This task was accomplished by the prolific London engraver Emanuel Bowen who later in his career printed several North American surveys by James Cook.Cave was the proprietor of the London published Gentleman's Magazine and employed Samuel Johnson as editor from 1738 onwards in a bid to raise the tone of his publication and attract a more erudite readership. During this time Johnson checked and edited the text of du Halde as it was translated: 'One of the works that he advertised and condensed was a translation by other members of Cave's staff of Jean Baptiste du Halde's Description de la Chine (1735). First promised to the English public in 1735, the work finally appeared in two volumes in 1740. Johnson must have read, on and off, in du Halde for years, thereby increasing a stock of knowledge about Eastern, non-European culture that had begun to build up while researching Irene' (DeMaria The Life of Samuel Johnson 1993, p.67). Significantly, in his other writings Johnson used knowledge of Confucius derived from his close reading of du Halde, thereby disseminating awareness of the great Chinese philosopher to British readers of the eighteenth century. Provenance: Contemporary ownership inscription of Archibald Kennedy, a customs agent. Some scattered foxing but a very good copy, spines expertly restored in contemporary style.

Nouvelle edition.

Amsterdam: Jean Frederic Bernard, 1741. Three quarto volumes, with two frontispieces, two engraved decorative titles, and 16 plates (of which three are folding), contemporary binding of polished calf, flat spines gilt with complex ornaments in panels. Beautifully printed with an impressive array of engraved plates, this is widely considered the most desirable eighteenth-century edition of Rabelais. It is notable for its learned commentary by the scholar Jacob Duchat, and for the inclusion of letters and other material related to the life of the master satirist. This lavish enlightenment production contains sixteen plates including three folding studies of Rabelais' family estate of La Déviniere at Indre-et-Loire (namely, a birds-eye view of the estate with its walled vineyard, Rabelais' chamber, and the domestic courtyard). As the title-page boasts, many of the engravings are from the Amsterdam workshop of Bernard Picart (1673-1738), a gifted Huguenot engraver who emigrated to Amsterdam in 1710. Like many printers of the early decades of the eighteenth century, Picart sought refuge in Holland from religious persecution. Today he is best remembered for his role in the monumental enlightenment study of comparative religion Cérémonies et coutumes Religieuses de tous les peuples du Monde. To this edition of Rabelais he contributed a striking portrait frontispiece (as a religious exile Picart may well have found sympathy with the irreverent treatment of the clergy in Rabelais' writings). This is an excellent set in a striking contemporary, probably English, binding. Joints of first volume just starting but a very attractive set.

In about 1618, when he was not yet twenty years old, Berrettini prepared a series of twenty anatomical drawings, depicting their subjects in a variety of dramatic poses amongst columns, plinths and arches derived from classical architecture, which remained unpublished until 1741. "Many of the dissected men hold oval or rectangular medallions - they look like framed mirrors - within which are drawn figures detailing the anatomy of various regions. Others have no accessory figures" (Roberts & Tomlinson, p. 273). Gaetano Petrioli must have decided to publish them because of the high reputation of Berrettini's art in the eighteenth century. Petrioli's edition contained the original twenty plates (nos. I-XIX and XXVII) plus seven others with figures copied from Vesalius, Vesling, Casserio and others, along with commentary supplied by Petrioli. As a supplement, to enhance the unity of Berrettini's plates, Petrioli also had them embellished with numerous smaller anatomical figures taken from Vesalius, Valverde, and others, "engraved in an incongruous manner wherever there was sufficient space on the plate" (Roberts & Tomlinson). Berrettini's original drawings were acquired by Sir William Hamilton, the British Ambassador to the King of Naples, and husband of Admiral Nelson's mistress, Lady Emma Hamilton. In 1772 Hamilton presented them to William Hunter for inclusion in Hunter's anatomical museum. They are now in the Hunterian Collection at University of Glasgow Library. Very Good....

Stadtpfarrkirche und Künstlerpfarre von Wien. 1288-1988. Versandkostenfreie Lieferung Austriaca, Viennensia, Theologie, Böhmen, Johann v.       - Kuijlen et al., Paradisus Batavus 103 (& exhib. 86); Picarta (1 copy); WorldCat (2 copies). Rare first and only edition of the catalogue of the private botanical garden of the wealthy Rotterdam merchant Isaac Evert Cornelis van Schinne (1741-1819), established in 1788 at the suggestion of the physician Johannes van Noorden (1749-1800) and containing near 2000 domestic and foreign plants. Van Noorden used the garden to give classes in botany. The catalogue is arranged according to the Linneaen classification and makes references to the catalogues of the Prague botanical garden and Kew Gardens in England, but notes that there are also "wholly new" species, not in those catalogues. Van Schinne's four-page dedication to the Burgermasters and Councillors of the city of Rotterdam and his two-page note to the reader give some information about the history and use of the collection. The collection was sold on Schinne's death in 1819 and the garden closed. With the embossed stamp and 2 different ink stamps of Johannes Hendrik Willem Eldermans (1904-1985), who collected books on magic and occult. One of the stamps indicates that this book was part of his forensic library. In very good condition.

FREDERICK THE GREAT / POLAND - BATTLE OF MOLLWITZ (MA?UJOWICE) BROADSIDE: AFBEELDINGE VAN DE VELDTSLAG TUSSCHEN DE LEGERS VAN DE KONING VAN PRUISSEN, EN DE KONINGINNE VAN HONGARIEN, VOORGEVALLEN DEN 10. DE APRIL 1741, TUSSCHEN NEISS EN BRIEG BY ‘T DORP

Amsterdam 1741 - Broadside: Copper engraving (Very Good, old centerfold, small closed tear entering image near top centre, trimmed close at top but outside of platemark), 39 x 44 cm (15.5 x 17.5 inches). A very rare pictorial broadside of the Battle of Mollwitz / Ma?ujowice (1741), Silesia, an epic showdown during the First Silesian War (1740-2), considered one of the defining events in the military career of Frederick the Great. This very rare broadside features one of the finest images of the famous Battle of Mollowitz (Ma?ujowice), fought in Silesia on April 10, 1741, between King Frederick the Great’s Prussian Army and the Austrian army under General Graf Wilhelm Reinhard von Neipperg. The epic battle, part of the First Silesian War (1740-2), see-sawed back and forth and is famous for placing the young Prussian king in an existential, moral crisis. His experiences during the battle and his ultimate victory, marked a transformative juncture in Frederick’s life, setting him on the road to becoming one of history’s greatest field commanders. The scene of the battle was fought near the village of Mollwitz (Polish: Ma?ujowice), Silesia, which is today located in the Opole Voivodeship of Poland. The scene depicted on the broadside shows a stylized, vibrant, yet chaotic, scene as the Prussian and Austrian armies enjoin full-on battle. A veritable pageant of military action, cavalry is shown charging infantry, with scenes of hand-to-hand combat and fierce cannonades. As noted in the letterpress text below, in the background are the towns of Mollwitz / Ma?ujowice (marked A), Brieg / Brzeg (B) and Neisse / Nysa (C). The letters below identify 26 named major combatants, on both sides, including: 1. King Frederick; 7. the Graf von Schwerin, the ultimate hero of the battle; and 12. the Graf von Neipperg. The creator of the present broadside, Jacobus Hayman (fl. 1729-60), was a prolific Amsterdam publisher of works on current affairs, history, religion and philosophy. He is perhaps best known as the co-producer of the Dutch edition of Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles’s monumental and lavishly illustrated work on global voyages, Historische beschryving der reizen (Amsterdam, 21 vols., 1747-67). Historical Context - The Battle of Mollwitz was one of the most dramatic events of the First Silesian War, part of the greater conflict of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8). In 1740, the 23-year old Empress Maria Theresa ascended to the Austrian throne after the sudden death of her father Charles VI. While Maria Theresa eventually developed into a great leader, she was initially unprepared for the events that greeted her ascension. Frederick II "The Great" of Prussia, then 28-years old, likewise ascended to his throne that same year, however, in contrast to Maris Theresa, he was he was bursting with energy and confidence, but also naïveté. In 1740, Frederick took advantage of the political turmoil in Vienna, moving quickly to conquer the mineral-rich Habsburg province of Silesia, which was accomplished with relative ease. However, Austrian forces managed to regroup, mounting a reprise, aimed at reclaiming Silesia. . SEE OUR WEB PAGE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION.         A speech delivered by an Indian Chief in reply to a sermon preach'd by a Swedish missionary, in order to convert the Indians to the Christian religion. On or about the year of Our Lord, 1710; a Swedish missionary preached a sermon at an Indian Treaty held at Canastogoe in Pensylvania; in which sermon he set forth original sin, the necessity of a mediator, and endeavoured by certain arguments to induce the Indians to embrace the Christian religion. After he had ended his discourse one of the Indian Chiefs made a speech in reply to the sermon, and the discourses on both sides were made known by interpreters. The missionary upon his return to Sweden, published his sermon; and the Indian's answer. Having wrote them in Latin, he dedicates them to the University of Upsal, and desires them to furnish with arguments to confute such strong reasoning of the Indian.

2 volumes de I. VIII, 119 Paris, G. Cavelier, 1741, in-12, 2 volumes de I. VIII, 119, (1bl.), 420pp.

Ex-libris manuscrit ancien.
