small quarto, 2 ½ page manuscript account, neatly and boldly inscribed in ink, in very good clean and legible condition. It is written on laid paper manufactured by Benoid Vimal, a French paper maker active in the first half of the 18th century. See http://data.bnf.fr/14782624/benoit_ vimal/Contemporary manuscript account, written in French, of the Battle for Cartagena in the War of Jenkin's Ear. The account is probably a letter from a French trader active in Colombia at the time. This trader is most likely one François Hercouët. There exists in the archives of a notaire, named Morel, from Saint-Malo an "acte d'engagement" dated 29 January 1740 to a ship, the Theresa, chartered by the owner and captain, Hercouët, to go to the Americas. There are further traces in the history of Saint-Malo of François Hercouët. He was at the time a slave owner. Most importantly, the newspaper "the Courier" of 14 July 1741 alludes to the account offered here, H. recounts the events of Cartagena in very similar terms. It is cited that the information had come to the journal by way of a Captain Barcouët, who was entrusted by H. to send the report on to the Courier. The paper related that Barcouët, commanding the Marie-Anne, had left Santa Marta on 30 April and arrived at Brest 30 June. There was, by way of further note, a "Captaine Hercouët" who was very active in the slave trade to Saint Domingue in the 1770s. In March 1741 a large scale expedition of British and American colonial troops led by Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) arrived at Cartagena, a city on the northern coast of present day Colombia, in the Caribbean Coast region, with a massive fleet of 186 ships and 23,600 men, including 12,000 infantry. They were opposed by six Spanish ships and fewer than 3,000 men, in an action known as the Battle of Cartagena, part of the War of Jenkin's Ear. The siege was broken off due to the start of the tropical rainy season, after weeks of intense fighting in which the British landing party was successfully repelled by the Spanish and native forces led by commander General Blas de Lezo y Olvarrieta, a Basque from the Guipuzcoa province in northern Spain. He died in the aftermath of the battle. Heavy British and Colonial casualties were compounded by diseases such as yellow fever. The victory prolonged Spain's control of the Caribbean waters, which helped secure its large Empire until the 19th century. Admiral Vernon's unsuccessful expedition to Carthagena was the greatest and most expensive that had ever entered the American seas. There was a large force of American colonials, mainly from New England, recruited for the expedition, and this was the first American Expeditionary Force. George Washington's brother, Lawrence Washington was a member of the force, and was so impressed with Admiral Vernon, that he named his Virginia estate and plantation, Mount Vernon, after him. The manuscript, written in French, is here given in our rough English translation: "The English have established mortars on the nearest fort of the city and fire bombs into Cartagena without effect. They have sent a ship of 70 guns between those which had sunk and led to the northwest of the city and Fort St. Lazare to barrage the said fort whose cannot reach the vessels. The English made their descent under Notre Dame de La Pouppe at night without being sighted and after came by way of the road from Hyhymany [i.e. Imainie, name of the lower city of Cartagena, which means suburb in the native dialect.] into the city where they found 800 militia men and 400 regulars whom they surprised and put to flight and immediately won the road to Bouquille. By this means they were holding the city blocked by sea and land. After being masters of the path to Bouquille … they established a battery and mortars to bombard the city in breach. But M. le Vice-Roy de Sta fe who had come to the rescue of Cartagena made a lively attack with 3,000 Indians who went by the way of Bouquille. They put the English in a crossfire, as they on one side had the sea and on the other the thick trees. Spaniards and Indians killed 2000, made 500 prisoners and seized the path of Bouquille and the battery of cannons and mortars and 850 guns and other weapons. This road was guarded by all of the Indians and all the negro slaves of Cartagena to whom the Vice-Roy had promised freedom if the city was not taken, and that he would pay owners of Negroes a half of their value. The English also wanted to take Fort St. Lazare by scaling the walls, but were repulsed with loss of many people of unknown numbers. M. le Vice-Roy gave a truce to the English to bury their dead. The Spaniards in this action have not lost many men, but they lost 400 men in defence of Boccagica [Fort Bocca Chica]. The Spaniards fortified the suburb of Imanie and they are almost all drawn back, and have people in the city to extinguish fires in case set off by bombs. The English carennent [nautical term unknown to me] many of their ships in the harbor of Bocagica, having up to 17 there at a time. Moreover, their camp is still by Notre Dame de Pouppe, between there and Cartagena's Fort St. Lazare. After the vessels [of war] and 128 sailing ships there arrived 38 more, and every day more come. There are 180 sailing ships and 60 warships. The vessels and batteaux cross from St. Marta to Cartagena, and from Cartagena to the river. 18 merchant ships are at the coast of Portobello to be dealt with under the control of a warship. The English repair to Fort Bocagica "Le Sieur Hercouet" sortied from Santa Marta April 30 and arrived au Cap on 10 May and gave us the latest news "a la pointe d'avene ou Palmalite."

Decreet of ranking of the creditors of the now deceast David Dunbar of Dunphaill.

[Edinburgh] 1740. folio, 330pp. (each numbered sequentially), each page signed at the foot by James Justice, and countersigned at the foot of the final leaf by Thomas Bruce and then dated 17th June 1740, original mottled calf, just a little general wear at extremities, with the original red morocco label on upper cover lettered 'Decreet ranking the creditors of Dumphail'. In excellent state of preservation. A comprehensive and extensive legal document being the original adjudication and court order for the precise distribution of assets of David Dunbar of Dunphail, Forres in Morayshire [Scotland] to the estate's numerous creditors. The detailed 'decreet' (decree), which provides what seems to be a comprehensive account of the financial affairs of a mid-18th century Scottish estate, was handed down by the Lords of Council and Session in Edinburgh as the result of an action initiated by Mr. 'George Ouchterlong merchant in London and Alexander Tytler writer in Edinburgh' on behalf also of numerous other creditors. The Dunphail estate, its assets, liabilities and debts, had it seems been inherited by various members of the Dunbar family, including Ludonack Dunbar of Westfield, Christine Mackintosh (David Dunbar's widow), Grisell Brodie (widow of Robert Dunbar), Lauchlan Mackintosh of that Ilk, Alexander Canning of Alloy, John Duff of Cubin, Robert Grant of Detachable, Margaret Grant of Lochiechulls (widow of John Rose of Wester Alves), Peter Rose (eldest lawful son), Daniel Macqueen of Currieburgh, William Macqueen of Cluny, Alexander Cuming of Burntack, Alexander Tulloch (surgeon in Forres), John Falconer in Galeside, Charles Earl of Murray, and Lauchlan Dunbar, 'now of Dunphaill, eldest lawfull son and apparent heir of the said deceast David Dunbar of Dumphaill and his tutors and curators and the tutors and curators of such of the other defenders as are minors'. *Dunphail is variously spelt 'Dumphail', 'Dumphaill', and 'Dunphail'. It is located in Morayshire close to Carnach about 10 miles south of Forres.

The History of the Revolutions of Portugal, from the foundation of that kingdom to the year MDCLXVII With letters of Sir Robert Southwell, during his embassy there, to the Duke of Ormond; Giving a particular Account of the deposing Alfonso, and placing Don Pedro on the Throne

No marks of ownership, the binding is sound and handsome, the text clean and tight. Collation: A8 a4 B-2A8 2B4 This anonymously published work was written by Thomas Carte [1686-1754]. [NOT French historian, René-Aubert Vertot's more common work published in an English translation in 1735.] Our author, Thomas Carte, was born near Rugby, took his degree from Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1702, and an MA from King's College, Cambridge in 1706. He was ordained around 1714, and in that year refused to take the Oath of Allegiance out of loyalty to the Stuarts. In 1721, on the discovery of the plot for the capture of the royal family and the proclamation of the pretender (James Francis Edward Stuart) as King James -- Bishop Francis Atterbury (an accomplished political schemer) was arrested with the other chief malcontents, and in 1722 committed to the Tower of London. Thomas Carte, as secretary to the disgraced Francis Atterbury, was accused of high treason in 1722 and was forced to flee to France -- where he adopted the name of "Philips," for a time. We have a story which would have been familiar to many of the subjects whose histories Thomas Carte was prepared to write: a talented Englishman, abstracted from England for a time not of his choosing. In Paris, Carte (or, should we say "Philips" ?) collected materials for an English edition of the works of Jacques August de Thou and Nicolas Rigault -- two French men of affairs, who were also historians, scholars (and book collectors, by the way). Carte also began gathering papers for a detailed history of James Butler, Duke of Ormonde, who had ruled over Ireland (twice) for the English crown, and had spent many years in Paris enduring his own exile during the Protectorate. It is probably during this time in Paris that Carte also adopted his only other non-English subject: the complex history of Portugal. And it is revealing that there is an Englishman, Sir Robert Southwell, who wrote detailed and revealing letters home to England in the midst of one of the most complicated situations at the heart of the Portuguese history Thomas Carte wished to relate. In outline at least, Carte's text covers the development of modern Portugal from the Moorish overturning of the Gothic empire in A.D. 713. But the central period which attracts most of Carte's full attention begins with a revolution by the nobility and high bourgeoisie on the first of December, 1640, 60 years after the crowning of Philip I. Three main plotters -- Antão Vaz de Almada, Miguel de Almeida and João Pinto Ribeiro -- together with several associates, killed Secretary of State Miguel de Vasconcelos and imprisoned the king's cousin, the Duchess of Mantua, who had governed Portugal in his name. Their moment was well chosen, as Spain was at the time fighting the Thirty Years' War. The support of the people of Portugal became apparent almost immediately and soon John, 8th Duke of Braganza, was acclaimed King of Portugal as John IV. Subsequently, there was a war with Spain, called the "Restoration War." This conflict concentrated mainly on five significant battles - each a victory for King John's Portuguese forces, and the new King was in a position to demand of Spain that they recognize his new Portuguese Royal House of Braganza. John IV was a splendid monarch, a patron of fine art and music, and a proficient composer and writer on musical subjects. He collected one of the largest libraries in the world. He also cemented a relationship with England by marrying his daughter Catherine of Braganza to Charles II of England, (and offering Tangiers and Bombay as a dowry). Alas, John IV died in 1656 and [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Populars books, sold by peddlers, printed on poor quality paper and almost never bound, they are rare today. Each volume has a wood-engraved frontispiece always showing a one-legged hawker, delivering a letter. Frontispices and titles are different along the years and cities of publication. It is illustrated with several woodcuts in the text including a folding plate showing historical events, crime stories, curious anecdotes, discoveries, etc ... Each almanac contains at the beginning, a calendar, usually printed in black and red, with a list of fairs, and often advices for farming and gardening, as well as weather forecasts. The biggest production of the "Messager boîteux" took place between 1780 and 1860 in a limited geographical area: Switzerland, Alsace, Lorraine, Rhineland, Franche-Comté. This collection contains the years, (and places of printing) : 1753 (Bâle) - 1759 (Bâle) - 1776 (Bâle) - 1780 (Bâle) - 1782 (Vevey) - 1792 (Bâle) - 1798 (En Suisse) - 1803 (Bâle) - 1810 (En Suisse) - 1816 (Besançon) - 1817 (Montbéliard) - 1817 (Besançon) - 1818 (Montbéliard, 2 differents issues of the same year are bound together) - 1819 (Montbéliard) - 1820 (Vevey) - 1821 (Vevey) - 1822 (Vevey) - 1823 (Vevey) - 1824 (Montbéliard) - 1825 (Vevey) - 1827 (Vevey) - 1828 (Montbéliard) - 1828 (Montbéliard) - 1829 (Vevey) -1829 (Montbéliard, bound with the former) - 1830 (Montbéliard) - 1831 (Vevey) - 1832 (Vevey) - 1833 (Vevey) - 1836 (Vevey) - 1837 (Vevey) - 1838 (Strasbourg) - 1839 (Vevey) - 1841 (Vevey) - 1841 (Strasbourg) - 1843 (Vevey) - 1844 (Vevey) - 1846 (Vevey) - 1848 (Strasbourg) - 1849 (Vevey) - 1851 (Vevey) - 1852 (Vevey) - 1853 (Vevey) - 1855 (Vevey) - 1857 (Vevey) - 1858 (Vevey) - 1859 (Vevey) - 1867 (Vevey) - 1878 (Strasbourg) - 1879 (Strasbourg). Plus 4 volumes, with a different title, but similar to the "Messager boîteux" and published by the same printers : - Le Nouvel Anabaptiste, ou l'agriculteur-pratique. The 1830 volume has the following title : "Le grand messager boîteux des cinq parties du monde". It has a folding plate contemporary coloured. Various defects, with some tears and loss of paper here and their. A woodcut has been cut off on the title of the copy of 1753.

o.O. o.Dr. 1740 - Folio (23x33 cm). 144 S., 1 Faltkarte, 276 S. (Urkunden), 1 Bl., 8 Kupfer-Tafeln, 14 S. (Anhang), 10 S. (Additamentum), 2 Kupferkarten (komplett!). Privater marmor. Pappband im Stil des 18. Jh., m. kalligraphischem Rückenschild (innen gelegentlich leicht stockfleckig, sonst sehr gut erhalten). * Holzm.-B. III,5968; Kat. Schlesw.-Holst. 799. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Neraïr et Melhoé, conte ou histoire. Ouvrage orné de disgressions.

Paris? Chez rue a l'enseigne, 1740. Two volumes, small octavo; contemporary French mottled calf, spines gilt compartments with double labels. Very scarce: the probable first edition of this utopian romance, which is missed by most of the standard bibliographers. This strange mix of the utopian and the fairy-tale is set on the Island of Zinzinard three thousand years ago. Showing a very strong awareness of precedents in the imaginary voyage, Zinzinard is set mid way between Utopia and the land of the Sevarambes.Recent research by Ray Howgego has deepened our understanding of the history of this work: the author is thought to have been Henri Barthélemy de Blanes (c.1707-1754) was born in the Auvergne and was mestre de camp of a cavalry regiment; nothing more is known of him, our only source of information being a passing mention in volume 47 of Charles-Joseph Mayer's, Le Cabinet des Fées (1786). However, authorship of Neraïr et Melhoë remains uncertain, and more than twenty-five years were to pass before any name would be associated with the book, beginning with Catalogue des Livres provenans de la Bibliothèque de M.L.D.D.L.V., vol. 2 (Paris, 1767). The recently published Correspondance de Madame de Graffigny: 23 octobre 1744 - 10 septembre 1745 contains several references to the book, but Françoise de Gaffigny, novelist and playwright, laments her ignorance of the author, stating only that he is 'a friend of Ponteval' [Antoine de Fériol, comte de Pont-de-Veyle]. An alternative attribution frequently made to the theatre historian Claude Parfaict (1701?-1777) seems unlikely. Parfaict wrote nothing of a similar nature, and it appears that the sole source of this perpetuated mis-attribution is a librarian's note in the Catalogue des Livres de la Bibliothèque de Feu M. de Lamoignon, published in 1791.The unusual imprint of the work, together with the relatively incomplete listings available, has led to some confusion over both dates and authorship. The original date of publication is unknown, the publisher's imprint telling us only that it was in 'l'an de l'âge de l'auteur, LX' which itself throws suspicion on De Blanes who died at forty-seven. Le Cabinet des Fées dates the book to 1759, but the Graffigny correspondence clearly indicates that the book was in widespread circulation around 1744, which is probably closer to the date of publication. The journal Die Neue Europäische Fama first lists it in 1746. A now very rare German translation appeared at Bremen and Leipzig in 1747 as Der Stutzer nach der Mode [the follower of fashion?], and a second French edition of two volumes in one can be dated precisely to 1748. Another edition of two volumes in one was printed under the title Le Miroir, ou histoire griguenodine with the false imprint 'Venise' [Venice]. It is known that in 1749 all copies of this "Venise" edition were seized by the state and the bookseller Vente imprisoned in the Bastille. Any remaining copies, only two of which could be found, are overstamped with a government 'health warning'. It is also significant that the 1748 edition was printed in duodevicesimo (18o), which is usually a fair indication that the book had by then gone 'underground'.With the bookplate of Robert Garrisson. Some wear to extremities.

First edition, rare. The second book is also the first edition, adorned with a frontispiece representing the devil handing a letter to a gentleman. Full Calf blond contemporary. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. A tear p. 127. Caps slightly threadbare. Excellent small anonymous novel, typical in its construction and writing of the first half of the eighteenth century, which narrates the encounter between a gentleman and a duelist, the largest woman he had ever seen; it will eventually tell her story of love and give an explanation for this curious duel. The second book, satirical, denounces and ridicules critical number of subjects with a biting tone for the strange. Some references seem abstruse hidden. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! He was a French chef who served as chef de cuisine (officier de bouche) to various illustrious personages, including Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, the brother of Louis XIV, and his son Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, who was first duc de Chartres then the Regent, as well as the Duc d'Aumont, the Cardinal d'Estrées, and the Marquis de Louvois. His 'Nouveau Cuisinier Royal et Bourgeois' first appeared, anonymously, as a single volume in 1691. His other cookbook, 'Nouvelle Instruction pour les Confitures, les Liqueurs et les Fruits' appeared, also anonymously, in 1692, and was reprinted several times in the eighteenth century, as offered here. Massialot describes himself in his preface as "a cook who dares to qualify himself royal",... and it is not without cause, for the meals which he describes..."have all been served at court or in the houses of princes, and of people of the first rank." An innovation in Massialot's book was the alphabetical listing of recipes, a step toward the first culinary dictionary. Meringues make their first appearance under their familiar name with Massialot, who is also credited with Crême Brulée, in which the sugar topping was melted and burnt with a special dedicated red-hot fire iron. Another first with Massialot is two recipes in which chocolate is an ingredient: in a sauce for wigeon and in a sweet custard. Until then, chocolate was consumed solely as a drink. Massialot's works were translated into English as 'The Court and Country Cook' 1702, and again were often reprinted. Vicaire 455.
