The South part of Great Britain called England and Wales

London., 1740. 2 sheets joined. Size: 610 x 980 mm. Copperplate with original outline colour. Some skilful paper restoration to map folds and to worm holes. Very good condition. This wonderful large scale map of England and Wales was produced by the German émigré to London; Herman Moll. The map features a wealth of interesting fact and information, including two comprehensive and informative tables on the eastern and the western sides. The tables list in alphabetical order all the cities, towns and boroughs, what county they lie in, their relative sizes etc. Another boxed explanation tells you which towns and cities have an archbishoprick, a bishoprick, the number of members it sends to parliament, mileage distances and post towns etc. Two large and decorative cartouches, help to 'balance' the map; one is the largely allegorical title cartouche, and the other is the dedication cartouche. "The South Part of Great Britain" refers to the constitutional union of England and Scotland that occurred in 1707, which joined the north and south as it were. The map is full of interesting details including roads and distances between towns, which was a relatively new innovation in maps.( Ref:Reinhartz, The Cartographer and the Literati-Herman Moll and His Intellectual Circle , pp.18-36)

Paris, Nyon 1740 - 2 forts vol. in-4 carrés, [6] ff. n. ch. (faux-titre & titre, préface, sommaire des titres), 752 pp., [2] ff. n. ch. (additions, errata) ; [6] ff. n. ch. Frère I, 404-405. [Attributes: First Edition]

A New Map of the British Empire in America

Amsterdam, 1740. No Binding. Very Good. 43 3/4 x 40 inches. (four joined sheets)Original outline color; fine condition with strong impression. In fine, museum-quality frame. A superb example of the first large-scale map of the English colonies in North America. When originally issued on an enormous scale of 20 sheets in 1733, it was a semi-official work in behalf of the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to aid in the administration of the American colonies. This finely engraved and exact Dutch edition made the map available in a more manageable, four-sheet format. The Popple was also the first English map to name all the original thirteen colonies. Of particular importance in this regard, it was one of the first maps to show Georgia. Perhaps more than any other earlier map, the Popple map graphically brought home to English colonial administrators an appreciation of the vast territory at stake in the coming conflict with France. The map's unique graphic style, in which topography is expressed in very dense detail, further contributes to the sense of the unclaimed vastness of North America. Cartographically, the map was of considerable influence. For example, its distended shaping of the Florida peninsula is seen on numerous maps in the following decades.

[c.1740] - Attractive mansucript chart showing the coastline around the town of Oran with a key to significant sites - forts, "Maison qu'habittent les Mores", and "ance ou l'on fit decente" a curve in the bay where landings could be made, together with anchorages and soundings in the bay. Evidently this map was intended for use in some form of amphibious operation as, in addition to the soundings, the actual physical nature of the cliffs and beaches along the coast have been very carefully portrayed with a system somewhere between literal graphic representation and stylised hachures. There is an ink signature of "Le Ch[eva]l[ie]r de Murat Saurins" beneath the legend which may tie this chart to the operations of the French against the Ali-Pasha, Bey of Tunis. In 1742 one Lieutenant Saurins-Murat was sent by the Marquis de Massiac to take Tabarka by surprise with a force of three hundred on board two brigantines. They were betrayed and fell into an ambush, two hundred and twenty-four unfortunates, including their leader, were committed to the bagnios of Tunis, whilst twenty-seven were killed and their heads displayed on the fondouk.

(Map / Chart Thames, Spanish Armada, Military History): Thamesis Descriptio Anno 1588. Roberto Adamo authore. Engraved from a copy drawn by Mr. Joseph Ames 8th April 1738 from the Original in Parchment

London: J. Pine , 1740. Very good condition, highly decorative chart with elaborate upper cartouche with armorial, lion and griffin. There is a lower cartouche, in the midline, with an English scale. This seems to be early color, on heavy laid paper, with nice margins, image measuring 15.75x26.5 inches. There are remnants of two small archival mounting stubs in the upper front corners, nowhere near the neatline and not constituting any serious visual distraction. This is a very uncommon chart from Pine's "The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords..", published in 1740 (a year later than the original compilation). The actual copyright date on this chart, in the right lower corner, is 1740. Pine's original publication had 10 sea coast chart, and this particular chart of the Thames was often missing, so this is a very uncommon and highly attractive item. Lord Effingham, commander of the British fleet that defeated the Armada, had commissioned Adams to produce this series of charts representing various battle phases. HC Vroom was commissioned to produce the original tapestry designs, which were woven by Francis Spiring of Harlem. Almost all the tapestries were burned in the Westminster Palace fire of 1834. London appears to the far right of the river chart, and there is a decorative 16 point compass rose just above the city location. The CD version of the DNB states: " In 1739 Pine published another work of great interest, entitled ?The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords, representing the several engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets in the ever-memorable Year mdlxxxviii,? with portraits, charts of the coasts of England, medals, &c. As these valuable tapestries, executed by H. C. Vroom to commemorate the defeat of the Spanish armada, were subsequently destroyed by fire, Pine's engravings, done from drawings by C. Lempriere, are of the greatest historical value.".

        Paraquariae Provinciae Soc. Iesu

Magnificent map of Paraguay, drawn by the Jesuits of the Missions. c.1740. Augsburg. Middle fold, printers creasing, not affecting engraved surface, slight staining on blank margins not affecting text, a very good example. 621 mm x 536 mm. Extending from the upper coast of the Rio de la Plata to the lower portion of Brazil, going across Uruguay, several Argentinean provinces and of course Paraguay and Bolivia. On the lower end, the map extends up to the Chilean Pacific coast. The rarity and great importance of the map are based upon the fact that the Jesuit in the 18th century ?until their expulsion in 1767- controlled in their missions most the area herein shown, hence their knowledge applied to the map is probably best than all others at the time; most names are in the original languages.

I swänske rim författad, från engelskan. Af Andreas Hesselius americanus. Sthlm, L. L. Grefing, 1740. 4:o. (4),80 s. William Killigrews (1606-95) "Ormasdes or Love and friendship" trycktes 1664. Hesselius skrev stundom under pseudonymen "Angantyr Heidriksson Vinlandsfarare".

Copper-engraved wall map, with original outline colour, backed onto old linen, with contemporary wooden rollers, overall in very good condition. 49 x 55 inches. A rare and monumental wall map of Europe by one of the great masters of French cartography. Jean-Baptiste Nolin was one of the most accomplished and certainly the most ambitious French cartographer of his era. He founded what ultimately became a family empire in Paris in the 1680s. Exceptionally, he managed to marry superlative decorative ornamentation with the serious objective of producing maps that reflected the most advanced rendering of geographical detail. The artistic élan of his compositions evinced a style that preserved the rhetorical ambitions of the Baroque ethic, while anticipating the playful elegance of the Rococo period. His masterpieces, many like the present wall map, were monumental in scale and represented Nolin's desire to overwhelm his competition in what was a very challenging market. Highly controversial, Nolin occasionally described himself as "the Engraver to the King," an appointment of which the royal court was curiously never apprised. In his endeavour to include the very latest geographical details on his maps, he seldom hesitated to acquire information from his eminent contemporaries, most notably Guillaume De L'Isle and Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, Jean- Dominique Cassini and the Sieur de Tillemon. At times these rivals were not appreciative of Nolin's adoption of their intellectual property, and De L'Isle successfully sued Nolin for plagiarism in 1705. However, the larger-than-life Nolin always seemed to transcend these challenges, leaving a thriving enterprise to be taken up by his son. The present map was created in 1740 by Jean-Baptiste Nolin II, largely based on earlier maps produced by his father. It is a highly detailed and refined image of Europe, which was then in the process of intensifying its imperialistic grip over the other continents. This map is an artistically virtuous composition on a monumental scale, the image being surrounded by thirty vignettes, each framed in individualised Baroque borders, that depict various events from European history, along with textual narratives. The greatest decorative flourish of the composition is surely the title cartouche, located in the upper-left of the main image. Exquisitely engraved classical gods and allegorical personifications border the construction. Iconologically, they are meant to imbue Europe with the various strengths and virtues that they represent. For instance, Mercury, the messenger god of travel, is present to protect and speed European ships as they sail the seas on global missions of conquest and commerce. This wall map is one of the greatest subjects of the Nolins' legacy, not only being a masterful work of art and a fascinating image that tests the very limits of European geographical knowledge, but a vivid record of a dramatic transitional period in the history of cartography, and of society in general.

London: J. Bowles, P. Overton, T. Bowles, John King, c. 1740. Hand- coloured engraving. Repaired loss to bottom left corner outside neat line with facsimile border. Trimmed to platemark in places in top margin. Three vertical creases where map was folded into atlas. Multiple creases parallel to center fold. Splits in vertical folds have been rebacked. 24 3/8 x 38 1/2 inches. This large, marvellous Moll map of France bears his distinctive style and the fruits of his diligence. There is a lengthy, alphabetical index of more than 280 towns giving their distances from Paris as well as names and locations of passes through the Pyrenees. The source for this information was Nicolas de Fer. The depiction of France itself includes the roads and the distances from point to point on those roads in leagues, a relatively new feature in maps. Also noted, by a sword and date, are battle sites in which the English were involved or "mentioned in History" as he puts it. The cartouche includes two emblematic figures dressed for battle, one, Bacchus perhaps, the god of wine, and one loosely draped in a cloth adorned with fleur-de-lys who seems to represent French Royalty and, indirectly, French culture.

A Single Plate, Musculorum Tabula V from Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani

[Leiden: Joannem & Hermannum Verbeek, 1740]. From the first edition of one of the greatest of all Anatomical Atlases. Tabula V, which features Albinus and Wandelaar's famous "Muscle Man", a skinned figure whose musculature is visible and defined, as viewed from behind standing with the left arm raised, right arm turned and his weight shifted to the right foot. Elephant folio, 620 by 475 mm, single folio sheet, now mounted with the use of none-evasive corner tabs and protected by mylar. Very well preserved, fully intact with only the most minor evidence of age. ONE OF THE MAGNIFICENT PLATES FROM "AMONG THE MOST ARTISTICALLY PERFECT OF ANATOMICAL ATLASES..." Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect. The most famous plate in the atlas depicts a skeletal figure standing in front of an enormous grazing rhinoceros, sketched by Wandelaar from the first living specimen in Europe, which had arrived at Amsterdam zoo in 1741" (Norman). The plates in this large folio work, and in the four supplementary works in large folio with which it is bound, are unsurpassed for their cool, elegant aesthetic and scientific accuracy. They were drawn and engraved by Jan Wandelaer, a pupil of the engravers Jacob Fokema and Guillem van der Gouwen, and the painter Gerard de Lairesse, who prepared the drawings for Bidloo's atlas. Prior to working for Albinus Wandelaer worked for Friedrik Ruysch. Albinus, however, provided Wandelaar with the opportunity for the full expression of his talents as a draftsman and engraver. In an attempt to increase the scientific accuracy of anatomical illustration, Albinus and Wandelaar devised a new technique of placing nets with square webbing at specified intervals between the artist and the anatomical specimen and copying the images using the grid patterns. Wandelaer placed each figure in a carefully chosen landscape setting, and the artistic results are so pleasantly successful that the anatomical figures, although composed of many separate parts, appear to be actually stepping out of the picture.

        Poëmata

Amstelaedami: Apud Adrianum Wor & Haeredes Gerardi, 1740. 8vo (22.7 cm, 9"). Added engr. title-page, [18], 291, [1] pp. Sole edition of these neo-Latin poems, written by the brother of noted classical scholar Jacques Philippe d'Orville. The volume is illustrated with a mythic-themed, copper-engraved added title-page and head- and tailpiece vignettes done by A. vander Laan. All the engravings are gorgeous, and some extend almost to a half page in size. The main title-page is printed in black and red. Most of the poetry here is "occasional" — there are several epithalamia as well as elegies and odes honoring various "noble youths" and such figures as Pieter Burmann, Hadrian Reland, and the author's brother Jacque Philippe. Some works celebrate (and are in the styles of) the great ancient Latin poets; at least one, and the longest, is explicitly (Christian) religious; two are in Greek. Uncommon: OCLC and NUC Pre-1956 find only four U.S. holdings. Brunet 13064. Contemporary vellum, covers framed and panelled in blind with blind-tooled central lozenge, spine with hand-inked title; front cover slightly warped, binding dust-soiled. Front pastedown institutionally rubber-stamped. Scattered spots of light to moderate foxing. Errata (final page) lined through in ink.
