        Afrique

Paris 1740 - This splendid hand-colored copperplate engraving depicting Africa is in excellent condition measuring 9 1/4” x 13 1/8”. The African countries and areas as known in the late 18th century are divided throughout the use of the vibrant outline colors yellow, teal and orange. French cartographer Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a leader among cartographers and map publishers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. At the young age of twelve he began an apprenticeship as an engraver, working for his father Antoine de Fer, a printer and publisher. With the death of his father in 1673, Nicolas took over the publishing house and created numerous atlases, prized for their original and decorative qualities and accurate publications. In 1691, de Fer became an official geographer of the French Daupin and in 1702 to the Duke of Anjor later to be the King of Spain.

Submissions for an appeal on behalf of the Estates General of Brittany relating to property covered by the jurisdiction of the royal abbey of Saint Melaine, Rennes. Subsequently sold, the value had been awarded to heirs of the Comte de Villeneuve (d. 1678), who had inherited the property from Henri de Bourbon, Marquis de Malause. The Appeals were initiated by M. de Gennes de la Motte who was the Avocat des Etats de Bretagne. Of these two works OCLC lists only the BNF (with a date of "1738"); not in COPAC. The South part of Great Britain called England and Wales.

London. 1740 - 2 sheets joined. Size: 610 x 980 mm. Some skilful paper restoration to map folds and to worm holes. Very good condition. Copperplate with original outline colour. This wonderful large scale map of England and Wales was produced by the German émigré to London; Herman Moll. The map features a wealth of interesting fact and information, including two comprehensive and informative tables on the eastern and the western sides. The tables list in alphabetical order all the cities, towns and boroughs, what county they lie in, their relative sizes etc. Another boxed explanation tells you which towns and cities have an archbishoprick, a bishoprick, the number of members it sends to parliament, mileage distances and post towns etc. Two large and decorative cartouches, help to 'balance' the map; one is the largely allegorical title cartouche, and the other is the dedication cartouche. "The South Part of Great Britain" refers to the constitutional union of England and Scotland that occurred in 1707, which joined the north and south as it were. The map is full of interesting details including roads and distances between towns, which was a relatively new innovation in maps.( Ref:Reinhartz, The Cartographer and the Literati-Herman Moll and His Intellectual Circle , pp.18-36)

Early ownership signature on front pastedown. First Edition. While Cheyne is best know for his works on gout (G-M 4487) and hypochondria (G-M 4840), these were really part of a continuing program of medical writing that stressed moderation in diet and drink and the exploration of aspects of the mind-body relationship. These topics, which occupied Cheyne from the 1720s until his death, made him one of the most widely read English medical writers. A second edition of Cheyne's Regimen was published the same year as the first. DSB. Wellcome II, 339.

"Mother Shipton was Ursula Southill (or Sowthiel, or Southiel), the incredibly ugly daughter of Agatha Southill, known locally herself as a powerful witch. She is supposed to have been born in a cave at Dropping Well, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, in 1488, and because of her unfortunate appearance and reputed powers, was widely rumoured to be the child of Satan. Sometime about 1512, she married a wealthy builder from York named Tobias Shipton. She soon attained considerable notoriety throughout England as "The Northern Prophetess," and her prognostications received great public attention, were printed in pamphlets, and were widely distributed."-James Randi, An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural, 1995.
