First edition of an extremely rare work on the Pacific colonies of South America, with valuable information on British piracy in Americn waters. 1740. Madrid. Oficina de Diego Miguel de Peralta. In 4to (203 mm x 144 mm). 8 ff. + 368. Contemporary green velvet, only a little rubbed, as expected, in slipcase. A fantastic copy in immaculate condition, with its entirely genuine presentation binding; very clean and fresh.First edition. A very rare work, and a remarkable copy in contemporary velvet, in uncommon state of preservation; Alcedos´s Aviso includes a vast array of information on the Pacific colonies of South America. A whole chapter is dedicated to English privateering activities in American waters, both in the West Indies as in the Pacific. Although having had a successful career in the Spanish colonial administration in America, it was Alcedo´s fierce opposition to piracy, the English invasions to Spanish dominions, and his actions to prevent contraband, what would make him known.Dionysio de Alcedo y Herrera (1690 ?" 1777) first travelled to America in 1706, accompanying Castell dos Rius, Viceroy of Peru; during the journey he became gravelly ill in Cartagena and decided to return to Spain. During the voyage, a British privateering fleet, under the command of Charles Wager, captured the ship he was on board. After this, he was taken to Jamaica, and shortly set free, this adventure was to be the beginning of his career in the Colonial administration in South America. He journeyed overland towards Peru, only to find Castell dos Rius had passed away, and a new Viceroy, the bishop of Lima, Diego Ladron de Guevara, had occupied the position. Subsequently, Alcedo occupied high positions in the colonial administration of Mexico and Peru: in 1723 was designated as deputy of commerce in Peru, in 1728 he is designated President of the Audiencia de Quito. It´s this later position that would acquaint Alcedo with the expeditionary mission lead by Charles de la Condamine, as well as Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa. His performance granted him the appointment as Governor of Tierra Firme, and Captain General of Panama ?"both influential and substantial position in the colonial administration-, center of the confrontation with Great Britain. After a while he went back to Spain accused of administrative irregularities. The positions occupied, as well as his deep interest in combating contraband and piracy, collaborate to the creation of a fundamental source of information on the Pacific colonies of South America.

First edition. Engraved allegorical frontispiece by Schley. 2 parts in one volumes. 1 vols. 4to. Contemporary French mottled calf, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Upper joint starting at bottom, and apart from some minor toning, this is a lovely, unsophisticated copy in contemporary dress. Printed by Prosper Marchand, a Huguenot publisher and journalist who fled France in 1709, the work appeared at the 300th anniversary of the invention of printing. Marchand writes that he produced the book "a la sollicitation de quelques amis qui ont cru que le troisième jubile ou la troisième année séculaire, de l'imprimerie, reveilleroit infailliblement la curiosité du publique touchant l'origine de ce bel art [at the request of some friends who believed that the third jubilee, or the tercentenary of printing, would infallibly wake the public curiosity concerning the origin of this beautiful art]." The allegorical frontspiece by J.V. Schley show Minerva and Mercury, descending from Heaven, granting the gift of printing to Germany who in turn gives it to England, Holland, France, and Italy.

Elle semble seulement précédée par celle de Houppeville (cf. Bibliography, In : Birkett J : The Diseases of the Breast, p. xvi). 4, p. 588) et Boddice le cite également (Pain and Emotion in Modern History, pp. 23, 29-30, 33-35). © S.A.S. Jean-Pierre Aubert.         AN ACCOUNT OF THE SHIPWRECK OF A DUTCH VESSEL ON THE COAST OF THE ISLE OF QUELPAERT, TOGETHER WITH THE DESCRIPTION OF THE KINGDOM OF COREA [KOREA] Translated from the French

[London]: Printed for Henry Lintot; and John Osborn, [1740-1750]. [1745].. [1745].. Very good. - Folio, 14 inches high by 9 inches wide. Unbound, removed from a larger volume at some time in the past. [24] pages consisting of the title page and pages 720 through 742, with text printed in 2 columns with a woodcut decorated tailpiece. There is some darkening and occasional foxing with a few corner creases. Page 725 is miscut with the overlapping corner folded in. The edges of the last leaf are slightly chipped. Though the last leaf is detached and some of the leaves are partially detached, the contents are otherwise very good. Complete in itself, this section containing Henry Hamel's "Account of the shipwreck of a Dutch vessel on the coast of the Isle of Quelpaert, together with a description of the kingdom of Corea [Korea]" is extracted and removed from the substantial 6 volume set of Awnsham and John Churchill's "A Collection of Voyages and Travels".One of the earliest reports on the customs, manners and people of Korea. The author of this narrative, Hendrik Hamel, sailed to Batavia on the Sperwer in 1653. From there, they set sail for Japan ferrying Cornelis Caesar, the new governor of Formosa to his new post. Nearing Korea, the ship was shipwrecked on the coast of the Isle of Quelpaert. The crew was captured and brought to Korea where they were held prisoner for 13 years. Hamel and some of his men finally escaped in 1666. They fled to Japan, found refuge at the Dutch factory in Nagasaki, and eventually returned to the Netherlands."This short relation was first printed in Holland by the secretary, as he calls himself, of the ship that perish'd, and was one of those that escap'd, and, after a long captivity had the good fortune to return home. There's nothing in it that carries the face of a fable, invented by a traveller to impose upon the believing world; yet there are some men, who will scarce believe any thing but what they see, and at the same time will not stir an inch from home to be inform'd. These sort of creatures are not to be satisfied as to the credibility of any thing beyond their own capacities. ... the eight men mentioned at the end of this journal were all in Holland, and examin'd by several persons of reputation, concerning the particulars here deliver'd, and they all agreed in them; which seems to render the relation sufficiently authentic. Besides, as the French translator observes in his preface, there's nothing here asserted in the description of Corea, but what agrees with what Palafox, and others that write of the invasion of the Tartars, have said before. ... Thirteen years residence in Corea, was time enough to have given a much more perfect description, and many men in that time would have made it more ample and satisfactory; but the author gave what he had, and I suppose his memoirs were small and ill digested, having leisure enough, but perhaps little inclination, to write in that miserable life, as not knowing whether ever he should obtain his liberty, to present the World with what he writ." -[Quoted from the Preface].

Versailles Illustrated; or, Divers Views of the Several Parts of the Royal Palace of Versailles; as likewise of all the Fountains, Groves, Parterras, ye Labyrinth & other ye most beautiful parts of the gardens .

John Bowles, London 1740 - (12 1/2 x 16 1/4 inches). Engraved pictorial title and 29 engraved plates by Bowles, showing fountains, water falls, statues and gardens of Versailles. Publisher's blue paper wrappers. Housed in a modern cloth case. An early English work depicting the famed gardens and fountains of Versailles. The plates depict the gardens and fountains of Versailles after Sebastien Le Clerc and others, engraved and issued by print and mapseller John Bowles. This edition is dated based on Bowles's address "at the Black Horse, in Cornhill" at which he was active between 1733 and 1752 (after which the name of the firm changed to John Bowles and Son). The last seven plates depict the fountains in the labyrinth at Versailles, representing the Fables of Aesop. The "fable fountains" no longer exist and are now only known through engravings such as the present examples. These seven plates are each divided into six compartments. These contain a map of the Labyrinth giving the location of each fountain, a single compartment of engraved text describing the concept, a view of the entrance to the Labyrinth with its statue of Aesop, and 39 images of selected fountains, each of these latter images is accompanied by a verse translation of the fable above and a description of the sculpture below. Johnston 394; Lowndes, p. 2764 (1726 edition). [Attributes: Soft Cover]
