Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii, in America Septentrionali siti, delineatio cura et sumtibus Matthæi Seutteri, Sac. Caes. Maj. Geographi August. Vind. Cum Gratia et Privil. S.R.I. Vicariat in part, Rheni, Sveviae, et Juris Franconici

Matthäus Seutter, Augsburg 1740 - Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in very good condition. An excellent example of the third state of Seutter's important map of the American northeast with the famous 'Restitutio' view of New York City A fine example of one of the much-pirated Jansson-Visscher New England series of maps, first published by Visscher in 1651. The present plate was first published by Seutter in 1730, and `is the first map in the [Jansson-Visscher] series to show . the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.' There are three states with Seutter's imprint: the first with no mention of his imperial appointment, and the second state mentioning that he is Imperial geographer. In the third state (as here), dating to 1740 onwards, the title has been altered again, this time to include mention of the privilege that he has been granted. After Seutter's death his son-in-law, Tobias Conrad Lotter, inserted his own name and three further states were published. To this map of the northeast is added the famous Restitutio View of New York City, which celebrated the brief return to Dutch governance from late 1672 until February of 1674. This is one of the earliest views of the city. Adorning the inset view is a very elaborate tableau in which the Emperor, Charles VI, is shown attended by Hermes, god of commerce, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hera, who is standing over a chest of gold coins. Behind the divine beings, dark skinned workers of the world carry nature's products to lay at the Emperor's feet. Matthäus Seutter was one of the most important German mapmakers of the eighteenth century. Born in Augsburg in 1678, he became an apprentice to the renowned cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremberg. In 1707 he established himself as a map publisher in Augsburg, and quickly became Homann's main rival. His business flourished and by 1731 he was appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court.         DELL'ORIGINE DEI PROGRESSI E DELLO STATO ATTUALE D'OGNI LETTERATURA.

per i Fratelli ManfrediniOpera completa in 23 tomi raccolti in 11 volumi, dedicata al Nobiluomo Niccolò Puccini. Cm.19,7x12,8. Pg.5772 complessive. Buone legature in piena pergamena coeva.

1740 - 12mo., sometime bound in full vellum with morocco spine label; pp.[8] + 518 + 21 leaves. With 4 folding engraved plates. Contemporary ink name on title-page, some browning and occasional spotting, boards slightly springing, otherwise a very good copy. "Nouvelle edition, revu^e, corrigee, & beaucoup augmentee, avec de nouveaux desseins de tables." François Massialot, born in Limoges, 1660, died in Paris, 1733. He was a French chef who served as chef de cuisine (officier de bouche) to various illustrious personages, including Philippe I, Duke of Orlà ans, the brother of Louis XIV, and his son Philippe II, Duke of Orlà ans, who was first duc de Chartres then the Regent, as well as the Duc d'Aumont, the Cardinal d’Estrà es, and the Marquis de Louvois. His ‘Nouveau Cuisinier Royal et Bourgeois’ first appeared, anonymously, as a single volume in 1691. His other cookbook, ‘Nouvelle Instruction pour les Confitures, les Liqueurs et les Fruits’ appeared, also anonymously, in 1692, and was reprinted several times in the eighteenth century, as offered here. Massialot describes himself in his preface as "a cook who dares to qualify himself royal", and it is not without cause, for the meals which he describes."have all been served at court or in the houses of princes, and of people of the first rank." An innovation in Massialot's book was the alphabetical listing of recipes, a step toward the first culinary dictionary. Meringues make their first appearance under their familiar name with Massialot, who is also credited with Crême Brulà e, in which the sugar topping was melted and burnt with a special dedicated red-hot fire iron. Another first with Massialot is two recipes in which chocolate is an ingredient: in a sauce for wigeon and in a sweet custard. Until then, chocolate was consumed solely as a drink. Massialot's works were translated into English as ‘The Court and Country Cook' 1702, and again were often reprinted. Vicaire 455. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

"In 1690 he published under his own name the comprehensive Discourse about Trade, which included his Proposals for the Relief and Employment of the Poor, which had appeared earlier as an undated pamphlet. This work was reprinted in 1693 under the title A New Discourse on Trade to coincide with a new attempt in parliament to reduce the legal maximum rate of interest ( ... ) Child acquired considerable fame as an economic writer in his own day and was both widely read and frequently quoted. His works were reprinted continuously during the eighteenth century and published in French in 1754. He exerted influence because of his fluent and persuasive pen, his debating skills, and his obvious success in and experience of business" (ODNB). As Geoffrey Poitras notes "Child is another of the truly remarkable individuals populating the early history of financial economics. Child has some status as a noteworthy, pre-Smithian economist ( ... ) His status as Governor of the East India Company was matched by his stock trading acumen" (The Early History of Financial Economics, 1478-1776, 2000, p.322).

        Poëmata

Amstelaedami: Apud Adrianum Wor & Haeredes Gerardi 8vo (22.7 cm, 9"). Added engr. title-page, [18], 291, [1] pp.. 1740 Sole edition of these neo-Latin poems, written by the brother of noted classical scholar Jacques Philippe d'Orville. The volume is illustrated with a mythic-themed, copper-engraved added title-page and head- and tailpiece vignettes done by A. vander Laan. All the engravings are gorgeous, and some extend almost to a half page in size. The main title-page is printed in black and red. Most of the poetry here is "occasional" — there are several epithalamia as well as elegies and odes honoring various "noble youths" and such figures as Pieter Burmann, Hadrian Reland, and the author's brother Jacque Philippe. Some works celebrate (and are in the styles of) the great ancient Latin poets; at least one, and the longest, is explicitly (Christian) religious; two are in Greek. Uncommon: OCLC and NUC Pre-1956 find only four U.S. holdings. Contemporary vellum, covers framed and panelled in blind with blind-tooled central lozenge, spine with hand-inked title; front cover slightly warped, binding dust-soiled. Front pastedown institutionally rubber-stamped. Scattered spots of light to moderate foxing. Errata (final page) lined through in ink.

The Lives of the Professors of Gresham College: To Which is Prefixed The Life of the Founder, Sir Thomas Gresham. With An Appendix, consisting of Orations, Lectures, and Letters, Written by the Professors

London: John Moore, 1740 Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. [frontispiece and 4 engravings][4] xxiv, pp 1-338, [2], 156 A subscriber's copy of the first edition of Ward's Gresham College, inscribed and aggressively annotated by Christopher Wren, self-appointed protector of his father Sir Christopher Wren's reputation as summarised by Ward in this work. The book is bound in handsome twentieth century speckled calf, gilt, with new endpapers and a little trimming to the textblock. Christopher Wren who oversaw the topping out of his father's masterpiece, St Paul's Cathedral, in 1710 helped shape his father's reputation in his old age, collaborating on 'Parentalia, or, Memoirs of the family of the Wrens' which only appeared after his own death. It is no surprise therefore to find his printed name in the Subscribers' list of a book intimately involved with his father's life, and his ownership signature: 'E Libris Chr.i Wren' on the title page. Wren's annotations are amusingly dismissive about his own son, Stephen Wren (later the editor of Parentalia) as 'a rare fool' and he is equally critical of Ward's attempt to profile Sir Christopher, noting in the index against Ward's account of his 'person and character' that 'Both of these awkwardly and foolishly Described' and that the biography is: 'nothing to the purpose'. Ward's interpretation of his forebears attracts particular ire from the annotator who observes: 'His Descent which from this Book is made out to be none at all'. The pattern of annotation appears to have continued in the book after Wren's death with a note about the disposal of the long lost lunar globe devised by Sir Christopher Wren, that 'it was afterwards sold at a publick auction by his Grandson Stephen Wren' as well as other marginalia. Sir Christopher Wren's biographer Lisa Jardine has described him as 'an outstandingly gifted individual born at a defining moment in English history [whose] diverse talents were more exceptional by far than a single building, however magnificent, could convey'. This remarkable Wren family association copy allows the process of reputation building to be laid bare.
