Examen du livre intitulé réflexions politiques sur les finances et le commerce.

The Hague: Vaillant & Nicolas Prevôt, 1740 - 2 volumes, octavo (157 × 91 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, brown morocco labels, spines lettered in gilt and gilt-tooled in compartments, red edges, marbled endpapers, armorial bookplates. Hinges lightly rubbed, otherwise an excellent, fresh, set. First edition. Pâris-Duverney and Deschamps refute Dutot's Réflexions politiques sur les finances et le commerce (1738) - a favourable consideration of John Law's paper currency system. Pâris-Duverney (the third of the four brothers Pâris, whose financial plans had been accepted under the Regency in 1716) had fallen into disgrace with the rise of Law, then risen again with Law's fall in 1720. In the Examen, he and Deschamps made a clear and tersely-argued refutation of Dutot and Law, warmly praising the Visa, and providing a detailed history of the Mississippi scheme and its collapse. "The different operations of this scheme are explained so fully, so clearly, and with so much order and distinctness, by Mr. Du Verney in his Examination of the Political Reflections upon Commerce and Finances of Mr. Du Tot, that I shall not give any account of them" (Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations, 1776, I, 385). Kress 4519; Goldsmiths' 7784; Einaudi 1538; INED 1359; Mizuta, Adam Smith's Library: A Catalogue, 1244. [Attributes: First Edition]

Tomi Duo. - - Anton Maria Valsalva (1666-1723), "of Bologna, who was one of Malpighi's students at Padua and the teacher of Morgagni, wrote the first full account of the minute anatomy of the ear in his 'De Aure Humana Tractatus' ((Bolgna 1704) Treatise on the Human Ear), in which the whole structure of the ear is described and illustrated with many new discoveries, and the uses of all its parts are investigated; in which is inserted a new description and delineation of the uvula and pharynx. He was the first to define the ear's three regions-outer, middle, and inner-and to explain their relative functions. - - The 'Treatise' is arranged in six chapters. The first three are anatomic and deal with the parts of the ear; the last three are physiologic and explain the functions of these parts. The auricle and auditory meatus, the tympanum and middle ear, and the labyrinth and inner ear are discussed. Chapter 2 includes Valsalva's report, promised on the title page, of the musculature of the uvula and pharynx; these are depicted on separate plates. The ten illustrations are good line engravings, of which the most striking are those of the nerves and blood vessels of the outer ear, the carotid artery, the semicircular canals, and the structure of the whole ear. - - Valsalva described and named the eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear and the pharynx. His consideration of the eustachian tubes led to the "respiratory maneuver" named for him; if the tubes are patent and if the nose and mouth are closed, a forcible expiratory effort increases pressure on the tympanic membranes. Valsalva used this procedure to expel pus and foreign bodies from the middle ear. Since his time, the Valsalva maneuver has proved to be of value to the internist, the otologist, and the radiologist. In the section on the pharyngeal muscles, he detailed the dysphagia which has also been named for him. By the digital manipulation of "a kind of dislocation of the cartilaginous appendages of the hyoid bone," he relieved a woman who could not eat after a lump of beef had lodged in her throat." William R. Lefanu, Notable Medical Books from the Lilly Library (1976), p.101 - - Politzer, Hist. of otology, pp. 136 -143: 'The scientific value of this work is demonstrated by the fact that the anatomcial sections of all the otological treatises up to the 19th century are based on Valsalva's work, part of which remain valid even today. Morgagni's edition, Venice, 1740, also containes his anatomical letters. Valsalva mentions for the first time the small sebaceous glands ... in the skin of the auricle and compares them to analogous structures in other parts of the body, e.g. the nose. Valsalva's description of the Eustachian tube is classic, again demonstrating his masterful dissection technique. Valsalva was the first to observe the presence of a watery fluid in the labyrinth. Valsalva was the first to describe a muscular dilatator tubae that widens the Eustachian tube during the perception of sound... Valsalva was the first physician who inspected the tympanic membrane in living subjects.' It was Valsalva who first rationalized treatment in otology. - - This is also the first printing of Valsalva's other anatomical papers on the colon, arteries and nerves, the eyes, kidneys etc. They include useful contributions to anatomy and surgery, of which the best remembered is his delineation of the sinuses of the aorta, still called 'Valsalva's sinuses.' - - Morgagni, Valsalva's student , edited this Opera with elabortate commentary. He himself added his most important biography of Valsalva, and 22 anatomical letters, that are a commentary on the work and a vehicle for publishing his (Malgagni's) own discoveries. Jürgen Probst, L. Heister, Unfallchirurgie 10 (1984), 1-8 (Nr. 1) - - 54 pp. are devoted to a surgical bibliography.         The History of His Own Time

London - Printed For The Editor 1740 - Two leather bound volumes with gilt titles to the spine. Matthew Prior (July 21, 1664 September 18, 1721) was an English poet and diplomat. When Queen Anne died and the Whigs regained power, Prior was impeached by Robert Walpole and kept in close custody for two years (17151717). In 1709, he had already published a collection of verse. During this imprisonment, maintaining his cheerful philosophy, he wrote his longest humorous poem, Alma; or, The Progress of the Mind. This, along with his most ambitious work, Solomon, and other Poems on several Occasions, was published by subscription in 1718. Prior's poems show considerable variety, a pleasant scholarship and great executive skill. The most ambitious, i. e. Solomon, and the paraphrase of The Nut-Brown Maid, are the least successful. But Alma, an admitted imitation of Samuel Butler, is a delightful piece of wayward easy humour, full of witty turns and well-remembered allusions, and Prior's mastery of the octo-syllabic couplet is greater than that of Jonathan Swift or Pope. His tales in rhyme, though often objectionable in their themes, are excellent specimens of narrative skill; and as an epigrammatist he is unrivalled in English. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm with all pages securely attached although the outer hinges are cracked on both volumes. There is some wear to the extremities including minor bumping to the corners, creasing to the spine and some slight rubbing to the leather. Internally the pages are clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and isolated spot. There are some water stains toseveral pages in Volume II. There are bookplates to the front pastedowns. Overall the volumes are in very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Retour de Chasse et Curée

Moyreau, Paris 1740 - Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper by Moyreau. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and mild rippling. A fine composition showing the hunting party returning from the hunt to refresh themselves and organize their spoils. This beautifully coloured print is one of many engravings Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) made of Wouwerman's paintings. Born into a family of Dutch artists in Haarlem in 1619, the prolific draughtsman and painter Philips Wouwerman was primarily renowned for his lively battle and hunting scenes. After an early elementary introduction to the art of painting by his father, Paulus Joostens, he trained with the landscape painter Jan Wynants (1620-1679) and briefly worked in the Hamburg studio of the history painter Everard Decker (d. 1647) around 1638. Wouwerman later returned to Haarlem, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke, which later elected him to the office of vinder in 1646. His elegantly rendered, distinctive works, which are characterized by their luminous colour and detailed, animated treatment of figures and landscape alike, were extremely popular in the seventeenth century as well as the nineteenth century, during which they were zealously collected. Among his varied and substantial repertoire of subjects, which included military and battle scenes, landscapes, travellers, animals and genre subjects, Wouwerman favored his hunting scenes. Cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs , vol 14, p. 723.

        The Ruins of Rome

London - Lawton Gilliver 1740 - A very scarce copy of this poem by JohnDyer. Dyer (1699 - 1757) was a painter and Welsh poet turned clergyman who maintained an interest in his Welsh ancestry. He was most recognised for Wordsworths sonnet, To The Poet, John Dyer, addressed to him, and for Grongar Hill, one of Dyers six early poems.         Afrique

Paris 1740 - This splendid hand-colored copperplate engraving depicting Africa is in excellent condition measuring 9 1/4” x 13 1/8”. The African countries and areas as known in the late 18th century are divided throughout the use of the vibrant outline colors yellow, teal and orange. French cartographer Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a leader among cartographers and map publishers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. At the young age of twelve he began an apprenticeship as an engraver, working for his father Antoine de Fer, a printer and publisher. With the death of his father in 1673, Nicolas took over the publishing house and created numerous atlases, prized for their original and decorative qualities and accurate publications. In 1691, de Fer became an official geographer of the French Daupin and in 1702 to the Duke of Anjor later to be the King of Spain.

Submissions for an appeal on behalf of the Estates General of Brittany relating to property covered by the jurisdiction of the royal abbey of Saint Melaine, Rennes. Subsequently sold, the value had been awarded to heirs of the Comte de Villeneuve (d. 1678), who had inherited the property from Henri de Bourbon, Marquis de Malause. The Estates General wished to assert the jurisdiction of the abbey (with themselves acting as court of appeal), against the Parlement of Paris, and also to divert the considerable sums from the beneficiary the Duc de la Rochefoucauld. The Appeals were initiated by M. de Gennes de la Motte who was the Avocat des Etats de Bretagne. Of these two works OCLC lists only the BNF (with a date of "1738"); not in COPAC.         Observations sur la Construction de la Carte de l'Océan Oriental ou Mers de Indes, pour servir vaisseaux du roy, dressée au dépost des cartes, plans & journaux de la marine, par ordre de M. le comte de Maurepas, 1740

Jacques Guerin, [Paris] 1740 - Contemporary paper-backed boards Provenance: Earls of Macclesfield (library shelf marks, blind stamps) The rare first edition of Bellin's extensive account of his map of the Indian Ocean. The work includes lengthy separate analyses of the coasts of Africa from the Cape of Good Hope to the Red Sea, Madagascar and other isles in the Indian Ocean, and the coasts and isles of Asia from the Red Sea to China. In addition to these geographic locations, observations made in the regions by various explorers are cited. The cartographer Bellin was employed for more than five decades in the French Hydrographic Service, where he served as the first "Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine." Commissioned to develop new surveys of the coasts of France and then the known coasts of the world, these were published, respectively, as Le Neptune Français in 1735 and the Hydrographie Français between 1756 and 1765. Bellin also published a Petit Atlas Maritime with 580 charts and plans of harbors, issued in five volumes in 1764. The present work was later reprinted as one of thirty reprinted pamphlets in the author's Recueil des Memoires qui ont été publiés avec les Cartes Hydrographiques (Paris, ca. 1767). Remarkably rare in this original printing: not in OCLC; RLIN records only a reprint at the JCB issued as part of the author's Recueil . Cf. Sabin 4556. (9 5/8 x 7 13/16 inches). 35pp. Quarto. Contemporary manuscript corrections in text on pp.7, 12, 21, 28, and 30. (Small tear at outer margin of first leaf). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
