      June 11, 1740. The document reads in full, <I>"Know all men by these pls. That we Samuel Hill of Biddeford in ye county of New York & Province of ye Massachusetts Bay in New England Gent. And Humphrey Scammon of Sd. Town & county gent, are holden and justly indebted to Thomas Paine of Boston in ye County of Suffolk merchant in the full & just sum of two thousand pounds in good bills of credit of ye Province above sd. Or current lawfull silver money to be pay'd to him & sd Paine his heirs execrs adms or assign to the which payment well & truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs and administers joyfully & severally firmly by these . . . sealed with our seals on the eleventh day of June 1740. The condition of this bond is that if the sd Samuel Hill & Humphrey Scammon shall pay to ye sd Thomas Paine one thousand & twelve pounds three shillings & two pence in like good bills of credit or silver money or in a good wood or lumber delivered to Paine at Boston at money Pine at or before the eleventh day of June next which will be A.S. 141 with lawfull interest for the same bond shall be void otherwise it shall remain in full force. Allen, Robert Treat Paine, Sam'l Hill and Humphrey Scammon"</I><br /><br />The verso of the document is dated <I>"Boston, October 15, 1744"</I> and reads, <I>"Rec'd of Mr. Pushworth Jordan by ye hand of Mr. Jacob Parker fifty pounds old tenor on . . within bond . . . Thomas Paine."</I> At the time Robert Treat Paine signed this document, he was 9 years-old for his father, Thomas. Thomas Paine was a pastor in a Weymouth church for several years before turning to mercantile pursuits in Boston. This document no doubt has something to do with his business.

      Incisione in rame, in plano, mm.560x400, presentata in elegante pass-partout a due finestre, con al verso la versione schematizzata dell'incisione. Tratta dalla prima edizione di una delle più celebri opera di Anatomia: Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani [Leiden: Joannem e Hermannum Verbeek, 1740]. Wandelaar era solito rappresentare le sue anatomie sovrapponendole ad uno sfondo ornamentale in modo di dare all'incisione un effetto un'illusione di vitalità e dinamismo. Le tavole furono incise e disegnate da Jan Wandelaer, allievo del più celebre Jacob Fokema e Guillem van der Gouwen, e del pittore Gerard de Lairesse, il quale preparò i disegni per l'atlante di Bidloo. La storia del diorama inizia con una elaborazione delle "vue d'optique" traforando particolari che, illuminando il retro in trasparenza, producevano l'effetto giorno-notte o, la modifica dell'immagine con l'arricchimento di personaggi o con la sostituzione del paesaggio di fondo. Le immagini, una volta modellate con cura a punta di forbice, divenivano delle autentiche "quinte" da inserirsi nell'apposito visore in legno, i cui nomi sono i più diversi: scatola ottica, teatro ottico o dioramico, pantoscopio, mondo nuovo, cosmorama, zoogroscopio, poleorama, aletoscopio. Esemplare nitidamente colorato e in ottimo stato di conservazione, come raramente reperibile, soprattutto nelle parti ritagliate a punta di forbice.. .

Two quarto volumes, 701 pp in total + table of contents, index, and publisher's catalogue, with 26 engraved folding plates. An attractive set in in contemporary mottled calf, spines with raised bands and decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers. Small chip to head of Volume II, minor rubbing to joints, leather at upper corners of one volume rubbed through. Mariotte (1620-1684), was a pioneering experimental physicist and founding member of the Académie des Sciences. He is best known for his discovery of the blind spot in visual fields and his independent discovery of Boyle's Law (called Mariotte's Law in France), which states that the pressure of a given quantity of gas varies inversely with its volume at constant temperature. Through active experimentation, he made other important discoveries in physics, mechanics, hydraulics, optics, plant physiology, and meteorology. This set contains all of Mariotte's published works.

Con una bella vignetta xil. al frontespizio, bellissima vignetta incisa in rame alla prima pagina di testo e bel capolettera; 5 tavole ripieg. f.t. incise da Philippe Simonneau. Legatura coeva in piena pelle bazzana con titolo in oro su doppio tassello e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso, tagli rossi. Minima mancanza di pelle alla cuffia inferiore e a una punta, alcune spellature superficiali ai piatti, lieve alone al margine inferiore bianco e sporadiche macchiette. Esemplare nel complesso in buono stato di conservazione. Jacques Cassini (1677-1756), astronomo francese figlio del celebre Gian Domenico, studiò presso l"Osservatorio di Parigi prima di entrare al Collège Mazarin. Fu membro dell"Academie des Sciences, della Royal Society e dell"Accademia di Berlino; qui ebbe modo di frequentare assiduamente scienzati come Newton e Halley. Cassini fu militante cartesiano ed espresse un parere contrario alla teoria della planetarietà terrestre; descrisse il meridiano perpendicolare di Francia e studiò l"inclinazione dei satelliti e degli anelli di Saturno. Sempre nel 1740 pubblicò gli Elemens d"astronomie e nell"anno seguente abbandonò le ricerche astronomiche lasciando gli incarichi presso l"Osservatorio di Parigi al figlio Cesar-Francois. Rara prima edizione, seconda tiratura emendata dagli errori tipografici [l"errata in fine è presente solo negli esemplari in prima tiratura; nella seconda tiratura gli errori furono emendati nel testo e l"errata non più ripubblicata - si allega copia dell"errata e, a mo" di esempio, copia di una pagina della prima tiratura contenente un errore di stampa poi emendato nel testo della seconda].       [1740] 1740 - Incisione in rame, in plano, mm.560x400, presentata in elegante pass-partout a due finestre, con al verso la versione schematizzata dell'incisione. Tratta dalla prima edizione di una delle più celebri opera di Anatomia: Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani [Leiden: Joannem e Hermannum Verbeek, 1740]. Wandelaar era solito rappresentare le sue anatomie sovrapponendole ad uno sfondo ornamentale in modo di dare all'incisione un effetto un'illusione di vitalità e dinamismo. Le tavole furono incise e disegnate da Jan Wandelaer, allievo del più celebre Jacob Fokema e Guillem van der Gouwen, e del pittore Gerard de Lairesse, il quale preparò i disegni per l'atlante di Bidloo. Joined the maps show the complete area and Danube in one large map! Engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Made by 'Homann Heirs' after an anonymous artist. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Homann Heirs'. Following the long period of Dutch domination, the Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in Germany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. The Homanns produced a Neuer Atlas in 1714, a Grosser Atlas in 1737, and an Atlas Maior with about 300 maps in 1780. They also issued a special Atlas of Germany with full sized plans of principal cities, school atlases and an Atlas of Silesia in 1750 with 20 maps. Condition: Good, given age. Damp stained top and bottom. Edges with an occasional tiny tear.Two small tears bottom edge. Light staining and soiling in the margins. A few small spots. Some minor crinkles. Original middle fold as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 25.2 x 21.2 inch.       Augsburg, Engelbrecht, 1740 ca. - 7 fogli (ciascuno di mm 188x235) su carta ritagliata con cura e con colorazione coeva; conservati e montati in sequenza entro scatola di plexiglass. Si tratta di un teatrino ottico in miniatura con le tavole numerate 50-56+76 sul cartone che funge da camicia; è stato rifilato il margine inferiore che doveva riportare le scritte Cum Priv. S.C. Maj. - Mart. Engelbrecht excud. A.V,". La storia del diorama inizia con una elaborazione delle "vue d'optique" traforando particolari che, illuminando il retro in trasparenza, producevano l'effetto giorno-notte o, la modifica dell'immagine con l'arricchimento di personaggi o con la sostituzione del paesaggio di fondo. Le immagini, una volta modellate con cura a punta di forbice, divenivano delle autentiche "quinte" da inserirsi nell'apposito visore in legno, i cui nomi sono i più diversi: scatola ottica, teatro ottico o dioramico, pantoscopio, mondo nuovo, cosmorama, zoogroscopio, poleorama, aletoscopio. All'interno si potevano ammirare le scene illuminate ad effetto tridimensionale. Accanto a soggetti ispirati al teatro e all'opera appaiono danze, feste in villa, battute di caccia, giochi popolari. La scena, estremamente veritiera, raffigura una piazza di Strasburgo con il mercato ed ha la possibilità di inserire un doppio fondale: o un Teatro con attori che recitano o un'ampia via prospettica con carrozze, personaggi e sullo sfondo una Chiesa. Interessantissimo e non comune soggetto. Esemplare nitidamente colorato e in ottimo stato di conservazione, come raramente reperibile, soprattutto nelle parti ritagliate a punta di forbice. Legatura coeva in piena pelle; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli su tass. rosso e ricchi fregi dorati agli scomparti; tagli spruzzati. Antichie note ms. di mano antica, alcune di dileggio verso i regnanti sabaudi. Minime mende alla parte bassa del dorso e trascurabile fenditura a una cerniera; lievi e naturali fioriture, sporadici e piccoli aloni. Esemplare nel complesso ben conservato. Antoine Favre (1557-1624), celebre rappresentante della giurisprudenza "culta", fu presidente del tribunale della Savoia; studiò, ottenendo grande prestigio, le interpolazioni giustinianee riuscendo a sviscerare la sostanza degli istituti partendo dalla critica testuale. Questo celebre Codex, certamente la sua opera principale, raccoglie le decisioni del senato di Savoia (riducendole a definitiones) seguendo lo schema del Codice giustinianeo. Di grande interesse anche la vicenda editoriale; la prima edizione fu stampata nel 1606 a Ginevra, priva però del primo foglio (De summa Trinitate) dedicato alle pene da infliggere agli eretici. La nostra edizione, dello stesso anno della prima, fu stampata a Lione proprio per ovviare a questa censura. Molto raro ed assai ricercato. Graesse e Sapori riportano altre edizioni.
