        A Treatise of Human Nature:

London: John Noon (vol. III Thomas Longman),, 1739-40. Being An Attempt to introduce the experimental Method of Reasoning into Moral Subjects. 3 volumes, octavo (195 x 122 mm). Rebound to style in modern speckled calf, red and green morocco labels to spines, red morocco roundels on green labels lettered in gilt, compartments ruled in gilt, raised bands tooled with rope-twist roll in gilt, boards double-ruled in black, red sprinkled edges. Engraved head- and tailpieces and initials. Contents to Books I and II additionally bound in to the front of volume 2. Corrections neatly made in pencil to contents of volume 1 following errata, 2 faint marginal pencil marks to volume 2. A fine set with very occasional spotting. First edition of Hume's first great work, rarely found thus, with two of five leaves which Chuo notes as often cancelled in the uncancelled state (A4 and F6 of volume 3). Hume composed the first two books before he was 25 during his three years in France. He returned to London with the finished manuscript by mid-September 1737, but he did not sign articles of agreement with a publisher, John Noon, for another twelve months, and the two volumes finally appeared, anonymously, at the end of January 1739. Already fearing that they would not be well received, Hume had meanwhile begun a third volume, Of Morals, in part a restatement of the arguments of these first two books, which was not published until 5 November 1740 by a different publisher, Thomas Longman. Hume treated the third volume as a discrete work in its own right in so far as he later "cast anew" its contents alone as An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals (1751). As a result of this broken-backed publication history, the three volumes of the Treatise are rarely found together. "The book comes up for sale so seldom that one may doubt whether more than one or two hundred can be extant" (Keynes and Sraffa, in their introduction to Hume's Abstract).

        Plan de Paris.

Paris Achevé de gravure 1739 - Folio (56.4 x 45.4 cm). Folding overview map, 20 double-page maps engraved by Claude Lucas after Bretez including 1-16 numbered in the plate, plates 18 and 19 joined and folded. Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with gilt borders, gilt arms of Paris to covers, fleur-de-lys to corners, spine in ten compartments, gilt lettered direct in second, others with fleur-de-lys tooling, raised bands, a very attractive example. Turgot's celebrated plan of Paris during the reign of Louis XV - a fine, fresh copy attractively bound in full morocco. Michel-Etienne Turgot (1690-1751), Louis XV's Prévot des Marchands, commissioned this plan in 1734 from Louis Bretez, a sculptor, painter and perspective specialist, who used the conventional bird's-eye representation (isometric projection). The stunning result shows maps with great and decorative details, being an important record of the architecture and gardens of Baroque Paris, the world capital at the time. This was the last major example of this type of plan. Michel-Etienne Turgot was chief of the municipality of Paris as provost of merchants (the equivalent of today's mayor). He is the father of the famous economist and statesman Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, which history has remembered as an early advocate for economic liberalism. What motivated Michel-Etienne Turgot to commission a map of Paris was his will to promulgate the reputation of the city for Parisian, provincial or foreign elites. That is why he asked Louis Bretez (c. 16. - Paris, 1736), a French architect, cartographer and professor of perspective who belonged to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, to draw up the plan of Paris and its suburbs. Over his two years of work (1734-1736), Bretez was granted access to all the houses and gardens he needed to visit in order to take the relevant measurements. The 21 sheets of the plan were created in 1736 by Claude Lucas, engraver of the Royal Academy of Sciences. The plan was published in 1739, and the prints were bound in volumes offered to the King, the members of the Academy and the Municipality. Additional copies were kept to be used as representations of France to foreigners. The 21 engraved brass plates are held by the Chalcography of the Louvre, where they are still used for re-printing based on the same techniques as almost three centuries ago. Millard 39. Forma, ac Methodus delcribendae morborum hiftoriae. De Motu Cordis & Aneurysmatibus.Lancisi laid the basis for cardiac pathology with his observation of valvular lesions and cardiac dilatation in correlation with symptoms of disease. He was the first to describe cardiac syphilis, he also notable as an epidemiologist, with clear insight into the theory of contagion. The copperplates depict the cardio-vascular system, the maps relate to the Pontine Marshes near Rome. In 'De Motu Cordis et de Aneurysmatibus', in which the germ of many later notions can be found. For instance, Lancisi gave very clear descriptions of warthy growths on valves and of dilated and strongly pulsating cervical veins in right heart dilatation (differentiating them from the pulsations in chlorosis). It should be noted that Lancisi described also correctly the genuine arterial (in particular aortic) and caridac aneurysm, as we know it. Still more pertinent to present day cardiology was his 'De subitaneis Mortibus'. Of course the definition of sudden death was not so strict as it is now - much debated as this question has been in our own time - but it is interesting that Pope Clement XI, alarmed by a recent increase of the number unexpected deaths among prominent people in Rome, ordered Lancisi to inquire by autopsy the cause of every sudden or quickly occuring death in the years 1705 and 1706. The findings proved far from uniform and the epicrisis (Scholium) was often couched in vague terms of iatrochemical hypotheses. However, in some cases of rupture of an aortic aneurysm was found and in ohter instances an aneurym (dilatation) of the heart which probably was due to hypertension or aortitis with aortic insufficiency. In one young patient with valvular disease and a large spleen, bacterial endocarditits may have been present.Lancisi did also important research on malaria, he pointed out that the fevers afflicting Rome and the surrounding countryside were closely related to the presence of swamps, which encouraged the multiplying of mosquitoes,. By a brillant intuition Lancisi attributed the spread of the disease to these insects, and strongly advocated the draining of the swamps - unfortunately without success. During his life he collected a personal medical library of considerable size (well over 20,000 volumes) and interest, which he generously donated to the Hospital of Santo Spirito the library is now named for Lancisi.

& 188pp.

In addition to "Riches of Christ" book contains the following Tennent Sermons: "An Exhortation to Walk in Christ"; "The Duty of Self-Examination"; "The Divinity of the Sacred Scriptures and the Dangers of Covetousness"; "The Legal Bow bent": "The Solemn Scene of the last Judgement"; The Preciousness of Christ to Believers." Original full calf, with gold lettering and tooling to spines. Engraved title vignettes. Title pages in red and black lettering. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. First English language edition of this monumental and groundbreaking work in the newly emerging field of comparative religion. Written in the very first decades of the intellectual movement known as the Enlightenment, "The Religious Ceremonies and Customs of the Several Nations of the Known World" made readers see religion in a brand new fashion. Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was one of the most prolific and talented engravers of his age. Jean Frederic Bernard (1683-1744) was a French language bookseller and publisher of Huguenot background based in Amsterdam. Together they prepared thousands of pages and hundreds of engravings intended to capture the ritual and ceremonial life of all the known religions of the world. "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (the original title in French), or simply "Picart" as it was often subsequently known endeavored to "present all religions, even those of the "idolatrous peoples," as impartial as possible. It argued for religious toleration by showing the danger of fanaticism, wherever it could be found, and by praising those religions, such as Islam, that offered toleration to others. At a time of widespread anti-Semitism, this work offered one of the most sympathetic portraits then available of European Jewry." (For more information, see: "The Book That Changed Europe: Picart and Bernard's Religious Ceremonies of the World," by Lynn Hunt, Margaret C. Jacob, and Wijnand Mijnhardt. Belknap Press / Harvard University Press, 2010). The 222 striking engravings (out of 224) depict stately papal rituals with casts of thousands; Jewish families around the Seder table; Russian Orthodox baptisms and Protestant funerals; the burial of a king of Guinea; a Japanese temple with a thousand idols; Freemasonic temples and Chinese altars, etc. Bindings rubbed along edges, with most hinges starting.         English Channel] Canalis inter Angliæ et Galliæ Littora. Pasecaert van 't Canaal tusschen Engeland en Vranckryck

Renard, [Amsterdam 1739 - Copper-engraved sea chart, with full orginal colour, in very good condition. A highly decorative sea chart of the English Channel, by the master-engraver Renard. The marine atlases of 17th and 18th century Holland were best sellers. The nation that led the world in overseas commerce also led in the arts of engraving and cartography. Plus, there was a large audience of mariners and mariners' parents, who needed to study the obscure straits and recently discovered island groups their sons were seeing. Louis Renard (1678-1746) was from a Huguenot family. He moved from France to the Netherlands and became a book dealer and publisher in Amsterdam in 1703. It was re-issued unchanged by the Ottens in 1739. The charts were printed from plates made by Frederick de Wit in 1675, Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas . These were corrected by Renard, using, primarily, van Keulen.         Laws relating to the poor, from the forty-third of Queen Elizabeth to the third of King George II. With cases adjudged in the Court of King's Bench, upon the several clauses of them. In a method entirely new.

London In the Savoy: printed by E. and R. Nutt and R. Gosling assigns of E. Sayer Esq; for T. Woodward 1739 - 8vo., (32) + 284 + (20)pp., including the initial advertisement leaf, contemporary calf with raised bands and label, a little wear and cracking of top portion of upper joint (but binding absolutely sound), else a fine, crisp, copy. First edition. This seems to have been a genuinely new arrangement of material with examples of case law included exemplifying changes of legislation. 'It would have been tedious to have had the several Acts of Parliament upon this subject thrown together without intermission: the cases are therefore interspersed, and follow the very clauses of each Act from which they derive their force and efficacy. . In a word, from a view of the progress of the several Acts of Parliament, the reader sees in an historical light the particular inconveniences each was to guard against, and so enters into the wisdom of the Legislature'. Amplius explicata, multisque novis anatomicis inventis, chirurgicisque observationibus aucta Guilielmo Cowper accedunt ejusdem introductio in oeconomiam animalium, & Index in totum Opus. Omnia nunc primum latinitate donata. Curante Guilierlo Dundass.

Leiden, Johan Arnold Langerak 1739 - (frontispiece, 9) 59 (2), 114 folia. Rebound half Leather with 5 raised bands, large Folio 54 x 38 cm. (The pages are occasionally soiled, mostly in the margins, some of the plates are reinforced on the verso, the pages of the Appendix are reinforced in the margins. Otherwise a good and firm copy. Usually plate number 10 is also a folding plate but in this copy both halfs are bound seperately which makes 115 full-page engravings instead of the usual 114. The first Latin edition of one of the finest anatomical works of the eighteenth century by the English surgeon William Cowper, 1666-1709. The work was initially published by Cowper in English with the title 'The Anatomy of Humane Bodies' (1698), and was an almost direct copy of the 'Anatomia Humani Corporis' (1685) by the Dutch surgeon and professor of anatomy Govard Bidloo, 1649-1713. Cowper translated this work, added 9 plates and some of his own commentaries and published it as his own work. Although the obvious plagiarism the work became, also due to its improvements, more famous than the original and was reprinted three times in the eighteenth century, once in English and twice in Latin. The large anatomical atlas is illustrated with a frontispiece and 115 full-page engravings, of which 2 folding engravings. The plates depict the human bodies of adults and infants in living form and different types of dissection. The first 106 plates (numbered as 105) are engraved by Pieter van Gunst after the drawings of Gerard de Lairesse, the final 9 plates are engraved by Michel van der Gucht after the drawings of Henry Cook. All of the plates are accompanied by a description of the depicted dissection on the facing leaves. The plates are very sharp and detailed and despite the subjects displayed they provide a tasteful representation of dissection. With good reason called one of the most beautiful anatomical atlases of the eighteenth century.) Atkinson, J. (1834). Medical Bibliography: A. and B., p. 278-280 / Hahn, A./Dumaître, P. (1962). ¶ Heirs of Hippocrates 25 : "This atlas is a handsome production, with its life-sized copperplates and striking engraved title page" - Hahn & Dumaître "La beauté de ces gravures sur cuivre font de cet ouvrage le plus remarquable atlas anglais d'anatomie et lui valut d'être réédité plusieurs fois au cours du XVIIe siècle" - Choulant-Frank p.253 "The engraving is most elegantly done and is artistically perfect..."

This edition has been successively increased and it is very difficult to find the date of the original, certainly in 2 volumes. It is illustrated with 21 pretty faces, 5 folding (portrait Méhemet; a view of Constantinople, Richelieu portraits, Knights of Malta, the figures of the Chinese, Tartars, Arabs ... Boards on Morocco, the inhabitants of the West Indies etc.). Title pages in red and black. Binders full speckled brown sheepskin and icy contemporary. Back to ornate and finely decorated nerves. parts of title and volume number in red morocco. red edges. Volume I of the head cap threadbare, and heads of the Volumes II, III and IV, with gaps. Lack tail of Volume I and Volume V. A slot in the first nerve of Volume VI. A dozen corners bumped. Despite some flaws, a beautiful, very nice. Prestigieuse provenance. With 2 aquatint frontispiece portraits, an aquatint plate, and 15 engraved plates with maps and nautical charts (12 folding), some by Alexander Dalrymple, some reproducing Islamic manuscript maps. Further with 2 folding letterpress tables. Modern half calf, marbled sides.

Howgego N10; Goldsmith's Lib. 19402; Kress Lib. B5275. Definitive second edition, revised, expanded and with additional maps, of a detailed scholarly study of ancient navigation in and cartography of the Indian Ocean, the Gulf region the Arabian peninsula and Ceylon, by William Vincent (1739-1815). Volume 1 is devoted to the 325 BCE voyage of Nearchus, a Macedonian General under Alexander the Great, from the mouth of the Indus River along the coasts of what are now Pakistan and Iran, into the Gulf. Vincent calls it "the first event of general importance to mankind in the history of navigation". The second volume continues with other classical sources for voyages to India and Ceylon, including Homer, Herodotus and Ptolemy, along with many less well known. It also covers Vasco de Gamba and other early Portuguese voyagers. An appendix on ancient maps of the world includes a map by Muhammad al-Idrisi (1099-1165/66) from a manuscript in the Bodleian Library. It also includes several references to pearl fishing in Bahrain and elsewhere. With stamp on both title-pages. With brown offsets from the ink of the plates onto the facing pages and a tear through the text of one leaf, but otherwise in good condition, with a few smaller and mostly marginal tears and tiny holes, a couple tears repaired on the folds of plates and other minor defects. A detailed study of ancient navigation in and around the Indian Ocean and the Gulf, with numerous excellent maps.

Fine. Chez Le Breton, à Paris 1739, in-12 (9x16,2cm), viij 9-314p. ; (13) 14-288p., relié. - First Edition Copy the arms of the Princes of Bourbon Condé, Azure three fleurs-de-lis, the bastion of mouths.

A Journal of a Voyage from London to Savannah Georgia in Two Parts… The Fifth Edition. Bound with. A Continuation… From his Arrival at Savannah, To his Return to London. The Second Edition. Also bound with. A Continuation… From his Arrival in London, to His Departure from thence on his Way to Georgia. The Second Edition

James Hutton, London 1739 - 8vo, full leather, morocco label on spine, 55; [1], [2], 38, [1]; iv, 115 pp. Handsomely rebound in leather, with new endpapers. Internally a little browned but pretty clean, however one leaf is bound in backwards. George Whitefield (1714-1770) was born in Gloucester England in 1714. Although he was the son of an innkeeper, he did manage to get an education and graduated from Pembroke College at Oxford in 1736. He went on to become a very important religious leader in the 18th century, and he, not John Wesley, is believed to be the real founder of Methodism. During his career he made several trips to America, and became an important religious leader on both sides of the Atlantic. He had excellent oratory skills, and would often attract thousands at open air sermons. Benjamin Franklin in his autobiography refers to these skills, and mentions that after vowing to give Whitefield nothing because of a disagreement, ended up emptying his pockets completely after listing to Whitefield preach. His journals paint the picture of a very active man with tremendous energy, His writings include much about religion and preaching, but it does talk about some of the people he met and places he visited along the way. Despite his piety, Whitefield had his issues, and one of them was being a slave owner, which he justified in biblical terms. On the other hand, he did establish schools and the Bethesda Orphanage. He died in Newburyport, Connecticut in 1770. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Original full calf, with gold lettering and tooling to spines. The 222 striking engravings (out of 224) depict stately papal rituals with casts of thousands; Jewish families around the Seder table; Russian Orthodox baptisms and Protestant funerals; the burial of a king of Guinea; a Japanese temple with a thousand idols; Freemasonic temples and Chinese altars, etc... Bindings rubbed along edges, with most hinges starting. Gilt-lettered leather title label missing on spine of vol. 5, detached on vol. 3, but laid in. Head and tail of spines partly chipped. Front free endpapers of vols. 5 and 6 detached but present. Fly leaf at rear of vol. 3 detached but present.
