Fine. Chez Erasme Kinkius, à Cologne 1739, in-12 (10x17cm), (2) 34pp. (14) 513pp. et (10) 486pp. et (4) 530pp. (16) et (4) 429pp. et (4) xviij, 516pp. (14) et (4) 414pp. (10), 6 volumes reliés. - New edition. This edition has been successively increased and it is very difficult to find the date of the original, certainly in 2 volumes. It is illustrated with 21 pretty faces, 5 folding (portrait Méhemet; a view of Constantinople, Richelieu portraits, Knights of Malta, the figures of the Chinese, Tartars, Arabs ... Boards on Morocco, the inhabitants of the West Indies etc.). Title pages in red and black. Binders full speckled brown sheepskin and icy contemporary. Back to ornate and finely decorated nerves. parts of title and volume number in red morocco. red edges. Volume I of the head cap threadbare, and heads of the Volumes II, III and IV, with gaps. Lack tail of Volume I and Volume V. A slot in the first nerve of Volume VI. A dozen corners bumped. Despite some flaws, a beautiful, very nice.

The commerce and navigation of the ancients in the Indian Ocean ... London, T. Cadell, W. Davies, 1807. 2 volumes. 4to. With 2 aquatint frontispiece portraits, an aquatint plate, and 15 engraved plates with maps and nautical charts (12 folding), some by Alexander Dalrymple, some reproducing Islamic manuscript maps. Further with 2 folding letterpress tables. Modern half calf, marbled sides.

Howgego N10; Goldsmith's Lib. 19402; Kress Lib. B5275. Definitive second edition, revised, expanded and with additional maps, of a detailed scholarly study of ancient navigation in and cartography of the Indian Ocean, the Gulf region the Arabian peninsula and Ceylon, by William Vincent (1739-1815). Volume 1 is devoted to the 325 BCE voyage of Nearchus, a Macedonian General under Alexander the Great, from the mouth of the Indus River along the coasts of what are now Pakistan and Iran, into the Gulf. Vincent calls it "the first event of general importance to mankind in the history of navigation". The second volume continues with other classical sources for voyages to India and Ceylon, including Homer, Herodotus and Ptolemy, along with many less well known. It also covers Vasco de Gamba and other early Portuguese voyagers. An appendix on ancient maps of the world includes a map by Muhammad al-Idrisi (1099-1165/66) from a manuscript in the Bodleian Library. It also includes several references to pearl fishing in Bahrain and elsewhere. With stamp on both title-pages. With brown offsets from the ink of the plates onto the facing pages and a tear through the text of one leaf, but otherwise in good condition, with a few smaller and mostly marginal tears and tiny holes, a couple tears repaired on the folds of plates and other minor defects. A detailed study of ancient navigation in and around the Indian Ocean and the Gulf, with numerous excellent maps.

Fine. Chez Le Breton, à Paris 1739, in-12 (9x16,2cm), viij 9-314p. ; (13) 14-288p., relié. - First Edition Copy the arms of the Princes of Bourbon Condé, Azure three fleurs-de-lis, the bastion of mouths.

Laws Relating to the Poor, From the Forty-Third of Queen Elizabeth.

1739 - London, 1739. First edition. An Interesting Summary of Early Eighteenth-Century English Poor Laws Foley, Robert, Compiler. Laws Relating to the Poor, From the Forty-Third of Queen Elizabeth to the Third of King George II. With Cases Adjudged in the Court of King's Bench, Upon the Several Clauses of Them. In a Method Entirely New. [London]: Printed by E. And R. Nutt, And R. Gosling, (Assigns of E. Sayer, Esq;) for T. Woodward, 1739. [xxxii], 284, [20] pp. Includes one-page publisher advertisement. Octavo (7-3/4" x 4-3/4"). Recent period-style three-quarter calf over cloth, endpapers renewed. Light toning to text, worming to lower margins to preliminaries and first three leaves of main text carefully mended, internally clean. $650. * First edition. Apparently the first book arranged chronologically, this digested compilation of legislation and related case law was intended for sheriffs and justices of the peace. Each act is followed by a set of illustrative cases. Foley plan also demonstrates the evolution of poor laws. "In a word, from a view of the progress of the several Acts of Parliament, the reader sees in an historical light the particular inconveniences each was to guard against, and so enters into the wisdom of the Legislature" [vi]. This was a well-received work. Later editions were published in 1743, 1751 and 1758. Not in Goldsmiths.' English Short-Title Catalogue T113188. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Journal of a Voyage from London to Savannah Georgia in Two Parts… The Fifth Edition. Bound with. A Continuation… From his Arrival at Savannah, To his Return to London. The Second Edition. Also bound with. A Continuation… From his Arrival in London, to His Departure from thence on his Way to Georgia. The Second Edition

James Hutton, London 1739 - 8vo, full leather, morocco label on spine, 55; [1], [2], 38, [1]; iv, 115 pp. Handsomely rebound in leather, with new endpapers. Internally a little browned but pretty clean, however one leaf is bound in backwards. George Whitefield (1714-1770) was born in Gloucester England in 1714. Although he was the son of an innkeeper, he did manage to get an education and graduated from Pembroke College at Oxford in 1736. He went on to become a very important religious leader in the 18th century, and he, not John Wesley, is believed to be the real founder of Methodism. During his career he made several trips to America, and became an important religious leader on both sides of the Atlantic. He had excellent oratory skills, and would often attract thousands at open air sermons. Benjamin Franklin in his autobiography refers to these skills, and mentions that after vowing to give Whitefield nothing because of a disagreement, ended up emptying his pockets completely after listing to Whitefield preach. His journals paint the picture of a very active man with tremendous energy, His writings include much about religion and preaching, but it does talk about some of the people he met and places he visited along the way. Despite his piety, Whitefield had his issues, and one of them was being a slave owner, which he justified in biblical terms. On the other hand, he did establish schools and the Bethesda Orphanage. He died in Newburyport, Connecticut in 1770. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Original full calf, with gold lettering and tooling to spines. Engraved title vignettes. Title pages in red and black lettering. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. First English language edition of this monumental and groundbreaking work in the newly emerging field of comparative religion. Written in the very first decades of the intellectual movement known as the Enlightenment, "The Religious Ceremonies and Customs of the Several Nations of the Known World" made readers see religion in a brand new fashion. Bernard Picart (1673-1733) was one of the most prolific and talented engravers of his age. Jean Frederic Bernard (1683-1744) was a French language bookseller and publisher of Huguenot background based in Amsterdam. Together they prepared thousands of pages and hundreds of engravings intended to capture the ritual and ceremonial life of all the known religions of the world. "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (the original title in French), or simply "Picart" as it was often subsequently known endeavored to "present all religions, even those of the "idolatrous peoples," as impartial as possible. It argued for religious toleration by showing the danger of fanaticism, wherever it could be found, and by praising those religions, such as Islam, that offered toleration to others. At a time of widespread anti-Semitism, this work offered one of the most sympathetic portraits then available of European Jewry." (For more information, see: "The Book That Changed Europe: Picart and Bernard's Religious Ceremonies of the World," by Lynn Hunt, Margaret C. Jacob, and Wijnand Mijnhardt. Belknap Press / Harvard University Press, 2010). The 222 striking engravings (out of 224) depict stately papal rituals with casts of thousands; Jewish families around the Seder table; Russian Orthodox baptisms and Protestant funerals; the burial of a king of Guinea; a Japanese temple with a thousand idols; Freemasonic temples and Chinese altars, etc... Bindings rubbed along edges, with most hinges starting. Gilt-lettered leather title label missing on spine of vol. 5, detached on vol. 3, but laid in. Head and tail of spines partly chipped. Front free endpapers of vols. 5 and 6 detached but present. Fly leaf at rear of vol. 3 detached but present. Missing two plates in vol. 6 (the one facing page 80: "Baptism administered in private Houses / The Breeding Woman's Oath / Funeral Procession of the English," and the one facing page 203: "The Free Masons").         Provincia Mexicana apud Indos Ordinis Carmelitarum Discalceatorum sub Titulo S. Alberti Erecta anno 1588

A very rare map of central area of Mexico, with Carmelite convents, engraved by Domenico Franceschini. The map shows the province established in 1588 by the Spanish Congregation of the Order of Discalced Carmelites and dedicated to Sant 'Alberto, whose image surmounts the cartouche with the title. In 1588, the Congregation was divided in six provinces plus Mexico (Castilla la Vieja, Castilla la Nueva, Andalucia la Alta, Andalucia la Baja, Aragon and Portugal). Then, the Order expanded throughout Europe and the congregations of Portugal and Italy were created but the three congregations remained independent from each other. The map is part of the work Provinciarum et Conventuum Fratum, ac monalium Discalceatorum Ordinis B Virginis Mariae de monte Carmelo Congregationis Hispaniae Corographica Topographica, et Chronologica Descriptio" edited in Rome in 1739. Graduated borders, scale in the Spanish miles - Scala Leucarum Hispaniae (40 miles = 4.5 cm), the topography is represented with the design of the mountains from the shaded profile; It is also reported the hydrography, indicating the names of the waterways. In the lower margin, alphabetical and numerical legends respectively, with the references to the Convents of Friars (Conventus Fratrum) and those Carmelite nuns (conventus monalium). Copperplate, with margins, a small wormhole in the upper margins, light foxing, otherwise perfect condition. Dimensioni 245 183mm

The Tryal of a Cause for Criminal Conversation, Between Theophilus.

1739 - A Notable to Profit from Adultery [Trial]. Cibber, Theophilus [1703-1758], Plaintiff. The Tryal of a Cause for Criminal Conversation, Between Theophilus Cibber, Gent. Plaintiff, And William Sloper, Esq; Defendant. London: Printed for T. Trott, 1739. 32 pp. Octavo (7-3/4" x 4-3/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into nineteenth-century three-quarter calf over cloth, gilt title to spine. Moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, front hinge cracked, hinges starting, bookplate residue to front pastedown, early bookseller description tipped-in to front free endpaper. Light soiling to title page and verso of p. 32. Moderate toning to text, minor stains and smudges to a few leaves. * Only edition, one of two issues, both from 1739. The Cibber trial, which involved two well-known actors, was a sensational event because it appears that Cibber pushed his wife toward adultery in a scheme to make money from her affair. William Sloper was a frequent visitor to the Cibber's country home, having been asked by Mr. Cibber to teach his wife backgammon while he pursued his interest in hunting. There were reports that the Cibbers and Mr. Sloper lived together and that a door connected Mr. Sloper and Mrs. Cibber's bedrooms. It appears that Mr. Cibber had already "borrowed" ?400.00 from Mr. Sloper and that matters might have continued in a similar manner, with Mrs. Cibber serving as a kept woman procured by her husband. However, Mrs. Cibber detested the situation because she fell in love with Mr. Sloper. She ran off with him, but Mr. Cibber brought her back by force and confined her. She was rescued by her brother and returned to Mr. Sloper. Though ruling in his favor, the jury was convinced that Mr. Cibber had instigated the affair and awarded him ?10.00 instead of the ?5,000.00 he sought. The other issue of this pamphlet is identical except for a title-page statement reading "Price Six Pence." OCLC locates 3 copies in North American law libraries (Harvard, Library of Congress, Worcester Law Library). English Short-Title Catalogue T51983. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An attempt to explain the oeconomy of the human frame, upon the principles of the new philosophy. (bound with) The use of reason recovered by the data in Christianity. Part II

James Brettenham; George Straham, London 1739 - Separate title pages for each book. Contemporary calf, double gilt fillet covers, spine in gilt with morocco label, shelf mark stamped in gilt at head of spine. Covers lightly rubbed, interior with sprinkled margins, an excellent copy from the library of The Earl of Portsmouth with his armorial bookplate on front paste-down. First edition of an anonymously published work by Hutchinson, exceedingly rare with only 4 known copies (3 in the UK and the Yale copy in America). Hutchinson was not a physician, but interested in the activities of medical men, including the so called quack practitioners. He cites physicians that do not look to the patients symptoms and only guess what diseases they might carry. He here writes on the human frame (skeleton), describing his positions about numerous subjects, such as the motion of bodies in fluid, the quality of matter placed in the stomach and of the juices secreted into it out of the blood, the circulation of blood in animals, a description of the ducts for secreting, and the glands for collecting juices out of the blood, the state of the operations in a healthy person, the effects of too much heat and too much cold, the use of purges, diuretics, cupping and scarifying, blistering, smoking, or chewing tobacco and snuff, and his observations and comparisons between the effects of eating fresh fruits, greens, etc.Hutchinson (1674-1737) was born at Spennithorne, near Middleham, Yorkshire. He was privately educated to be a land steward when in 1700 he met John Woodward, the Duke of Somerset's physician and became interested through him in natural philosophy. He collected fossils and made observations for Woodward, who apparently was to have written an account of the creation and demonstrate the error of Newtonian concepts. Woodward used his fossils but never wrote his treatise. Therefore, Hutchinson produced his own alternative account that rejected Newtonianism because it conflicted with revelation, especially on vacuum and gravitation. What was surprising was that his alternative natural philosophy drew attention and persisted throughout the eighteenth and into the nineteenth century, winning him many disciples. He continued with a major interest in the geological theories by Thomas Burnet and Woodward, stoking the flames of a controversy as to the relations between geology and the book of Genesis.
