[Attributes: First Edition]

The Rights of War and Peace, In Three Books, Wherein are Explained

1738. The "Best Edition" of Grotius, With "Excellent" Notes Grotius, Hugo [1535-1645]. [Morrice, John (1685-1740), Translator and Editor]. The Rights of War and Peace, In Three Books. Wherein are Explained, The Law of Nature and Nations, And the Principal Points Relating to Government. Written in Latin by the Learned Hugo Grotius, And Translated into English. To Which are Added, All the Large Notes of Mr. J. Barbeyrac. London: Printed for W. Innys [et al.], 1738. [iv], xxxvi, 817 pp. Notes in parallel columns beneath single-column main text. Folio (19" x 14"). Contemporary calf with later rebacking, lettering piece, raised bands and gilt ornaments to spine, endpapers renewed. Rubbing to boards with wear to edges and corners, light rubbing and minor wear to spine ends, front joint starting at head, hinges cracked. Light toning to text, a bit of discoloration and very faint dampstaining to head of text block, minor worming to upper margins of some index leaves. Faint early owner signature to head of title page, interior otherwise clean. * First English edition with Barbeyrac's notes. Lowndes describes this is the "best edition;" Marvin says Barbeyrac's notes are excellent. First published in Paris in 1625, The Rights of War and Peace established the system of modern public international law, based on the concept of "droit naturel," a morality-based law that superseded the personalities of individuals or nations. Grotius describes the situations in which war is a valid tool of law enforcement and outlines the principles of armed combat. Though based on Christian natural law, Grotius advanced the novel argument that his system would still be valid if it lacked a divine basis. In this regard he pointed to the future by moving international law in a secular direction. First published in 1715 (with Barbeyrac's notes), Morrice's edition and translation was produced with the assistance of Edward Littlehales (1690-1724) and John Spavan (1685-1718). Lowndes, Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature (rev. ed.) III:950. Marvin, Legal Bibliography 353. English Short-Title Catalogue T110924.

? 5.4. 1693 in Quedlinburg. 8000 gr. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

ROSETO PERPETUO A' MAGGIOR GLORIA DI MARIA SEMPRE VERGINE

Presso Stefano Abate, Napoli 1738 - Dimensions: 23cm x 17cm approx. As we do not speak or read Italian, we cannot describe the contents of this volume exactly. However, it would appear to be some sort of text regarding the Virgin Mary and appears to be extremely rare. The volume has an illustrated frontispiece and also has engraved chapter highlights. It is in what we would describe as very good condition for its age. The full text of the title page is as follows: "Roseto Perpetuo A' Maggior Gloria Di MARIA Sempre Vergine; Ove siorisce per tutti i giorni dell' Anno un ragionamento in encomio del SANTISSIMO ROSARIO Tomo Settimo Che contiene i Discosi per l'intero Mese di LUGLIO Composto dal M. R. Padre F. GIO: TOMMASO BIANCHI Maestrogia Provinciale, e Vicario Generale Della Provincia di Santa Caterina da Siena, in Abruzzo; e Figlio del Real Collegio di San Domenico, nel' Aquila: dell' Ordine Predicatori. Dedicato All' Angelico Maestro SAN TOMMASO D'AQUINO Del suddetto sacro Ordine, e Quinto Dottor della Ciesa. Considering the fact that this book is almost 300 years old, it is in Very Good condition. The vellum covers have a fair bit of wear/rubbing/fading/marking and are slightly warped (front cover in particular). The internal pages are very good with some foxing and yellowing throughout and are also a bit warped. The binding is remarkably tight. Overall, in spite of the ravages of time, this book has been read only sparingly. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A VG+ remarkably fresh and very clean set of this scarce work. John Ray was an English naturalist, widely regarded as one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists, and the man with whom "the adventure of modern science begins". For three years beginning in 1663, the celebrated English botanist and natural historian toured the Continent together with his younger Cambridge contemporary, Francis Willughby, and others, primarily with a view to composing a systematic account of European natural history. They travelled through the Low Countries, Germany, and Italy, France, and Switzerland, with Ray making short visits to Sicily and Malta, and Willughby making a separate excursion to Spain. Included are observations on local customs and antiquities, and a systematic catalogue of European plants (with separate title and pagination, pp. 119, [1], bound at the end of Volume II). The Travels were first published in 1673. The second volume edited by Ray, comprises a collection of sixteenth and seventeenth century travels to the Middle East including a very lengthy narrative containing Dr. Leonhart Rauwolf's Journey into the Eastern Countries viz., Syria, Palestine, or the Holy Land, Armenia, Mesopotamia, Assyria, Chaldea, etc., translated by Nicholas Straphorst and revised by Ray, and also Travels into Greece, Asia Minor, Egypt, Arabia Felix, Petraea, Ethiopia, the Red Sea, etc., from miscellaneous observations and extracts from Belon, Alpinus, Vernon, Wheeler, and others. Ray had intended to draw attention to the botanical observations contained in the narratives, and compiled the catalogue of oriental plants found at the end (pp. [2], 44). Keynes 22, 22a (incorrectly citing 68 leaves), and 96. Cox I pp. 106-07. Blake p. 372. Blackmer 1397 (1st Edn. of A Collection of Curious Travels, London: 1693). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

REMARKS ON SEVERAL PARTS OF EUROPE, relating chiefly to their antiquities and history.

London, H. Lintot, 1738.Collected upon the spot in several tours since the year 1723; and illustrated by upwards of forty copper plates, from original drawings; among which are the ruins of several temples, theatres, amphitheatres, triumphal arches, and other unpublish'd monuments of the Greek and Roman times, in Sicily, and the south of France. FIRST EDITION 1738, 2 volumes bound in one, complete set, this being a sequel to two volumes published in 1726 also published with the title "Remarks on several parts of Europe" and continuing "relating chiefly to the history, antiquities and geography, of those countries through which the author has travel'd; As France, the Low Countries, Lorrain, Alsatia, Germany, Savoy, Tyrol, Switzerland, Italy and Spain". The author's Preface makes it clear that this work of 1738 is a continuation in which he confines himself to describing the antiquities and monuments of Sicily, Italy and France. Several reference works erroneously describe this as a second edition of the 1726 publication. Folio, approximately 360 x 230 mm, 14¼ x 9 inches, 41 of 43 plates, 21 folding or double page, 2 PLATES LACKING FROM VOLUME II, most engraved by P. Fourdrinier, 1 by E. Kirkall, engraved headpiece to Dedication in Volume I, historiated woodcut head - and tailpieces and initials, pages: (2), xii, (4), 292, (14), index and errata; (2), 316, (14) - index and errata, 22 - Addenda, bound in antique leather, raised bands to spine, no lettering or label. Binding in poor state, worn and rubbed, missing large pieces of leather on covers with some old repairs, corners worn, hinges cracked and holding on the cords, amateur repairs to spine, 10 mm (½ inch) chipped from head of spine, paper hinges inside covers cracked, pale damp stain to lower outer corner from title page to page 89 in Volume I, diminishing in size and growing fainter, affecting a few plates, tiny piece missing from upper corner of first 3 leaves, slight browning to upper edge of title page, small brown stain on first and 5th text pages, no loss of legibility, small pale brown stain to 1 lower corner, otherwise contents clean and bright, small closed edge tear to lower margin of 2 text pages, small closed edge tear to lower margin of 1 plate, 2 to lower margin of another plate, all neatly repaired on reverse. Text block tight and firm. A good working copy of a scarce set in a poor binding. John Durant Breval (1680 / 81?1738), was the son of a French immigrant Catholic priest who settled in England around 1660, converted to Protestantism and in 1674 was appointed a prebendary of Westminster Abbey. John Breval was educated at Westminster School and at Trinity College Cambridge achieving his M.A. in 1704. After a brief spell in the army, he became a professional writer of verse and stage entertainments, finally embarking in about 1720 on a career as travelling tutor to the sons of the nobility visiting France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Switzerland. (ODNB). In the first of our two volumes he describes Sicily and the whole of Italy north and south concentrating on the antiquities and ancient monuments in the major towns and cities, including Rome, Genoa, Florence, Venice, Turin and the Lakes. In the second volume he deals with the whole country of France, not just the south as announced in his title, again describing the antiquities of Paris, Versailles, Lyons, Marseille, Dijon, Strasbourg, Avignon, Orange and many smaller places. He also makes brief excursions to places in Switzerland and Germany just over the border that he had not covered in his earlier work of 1726. Paul Fourdrinier (1698?1758), engraver and printseller born in the Netherlands the son of French Huguenot refugees, studied architectural engraving in Amsterdam under Bernard Picart and later engraved the designs for many architectural books. He settled in London in 1719 and established premises there by 1727 trading in prints, maps and stationery. (ODNB). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST.         Ricciardetto di Niccolo Carteromaco.

In Parigi A spese di Francesco Pitteri Libraio Viniziano 1738 - FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 4to, 275 x 200 mms., pp. [ii], xxxvi, 420; [ii], 412, including half-title to volume 2 but no title-page (as issued), engraved portrait frontispiece of "Niccolo Carteromaco," title-page in red and black, with engraved vignette (by F. Zucchi after G. Ghedini), engraved head- and tail-pieces, by F. Zucchi, C. Orsolini, M. Pitteri, G. Cattini after designs by Ghedini, for each of the 30 cantos, attractively bound in contemporary vellum, red morocco labels; natural flaw in paper of frontispiece, slightly affecting portrait, slight chip to lower fore-margin of binding of volume 1, but very good to fine set, from the library of the 19th century collector George Wilbraham, and inscribed on recto of front free end-paper of both volumes, "comprato alla vendita dei libri di G. Wilbraham in Londara il 13 di Giungno 1829." Niccolò Forteguerri (1674 - 1735) lived in Rome and worked in the Vatican. An accomplished poet, he contributed to anthologies and collections, but this posthumously-published work is his greatest achievement. A slightly satiric and mock-heroic chivalric narrative in octets (ottava rima), it occasionally verges on the risque. In his 1947 book on Shelley, Newman Ivey White, maintains that a major impetus for Shelley's poem "The Witch of Atlas" was Fortegurri's Ricciardetto. [Attributes: First Edition]
