Rare compilation of early French editions. "The Mercure de France of 1 June 1738 compared Cupis favourably with his contemporaries, predicting that his playing would unite the tenderness and feeling of Leclair with the fire and brilliance of Guignon. Rameau named a movement of his fifth concert (1741) after him. Cupis contributed to the evolution of violin playing through his use of 8th position, fourth-finger extensions and new bowing methods with extended phrases on single bow strokes. His violin sonatas (with one exception) each contain four movements, a slow movement followed by three faster ones. The allegro movements are characteristically monothematic and careful attention to dynamic nuance is evident throughout. The first sonata of op.2 contains the famous ?'menuet de Cupis?' praised by D?'Aquin de Château-Lyon (1753)." Julie-Anne Sadie in Grove Music Online. "Veracini... dedicated a set of 12 solo sonatas to Prince Elector Friedrich August of Saxony. Though knowing that a violinist was not needed at the Dresden court... the prince persuaded his father to retain Veracini... Veracini travelled to Dresden where he was transferred from the prince?'s private employment to the regular court payroll on 20 November 1717. His salary was equal to Heinichen?'s, Volumier?'s and Johann Schmidt?'s, and far exceeded those of the other composers, J.G. Pisendel, Christian Pezold and J.D. Zelenka. In February 1719 Veracini was entrusted with hiring more singers for the court while he was in Bologna and Venice. He returned to Dresden where he remained until 1722, when on 13 August he leapt from a third-storey window in a fit of madness brought on by too much application to music and reading of alchemy, according to Mattheson. Veracini?'s treatise hints that there was a plot against his life inspired by jealousy, however... The op. 1 sonatas of 1721 are... contrapuntal, perhaps owing to the influence of the German composers at Dresden, from whom he certainly got the idea of beginning a suite of dances with a French overture (unheard of in Italian solo sonatas)." John Walter Hill in Grove Music Online. The Meyer collection, formed over a period of some 75 years, was one of the most important collections of printed music, musical autographs, and books on music of the 20th century

Clean, unmarked pages. Ships daily. A unusual treatise on the reflections of the Old World and the New World. In this work, La Rue's reached a similar conclusion 20 years before Rousseau, where he empahasizes how the loss of "savage reason" was an indication of folly by the Peruvians and Mexicans. (Buccani, Americas in Italian Literature and Culture, 1700-1825, p 66). Such ideas were prevalent towards the end of the Enlightenment and La Rue's book mimics that of Baron de Lahontan dialogues with Adario. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Los Señores de la Nueva España

      - Manuscript on paper, copied in 1738 in Mexico and subscribed by the Italian historian Lorenzo Boturini Benaducci (1698-1755).Folio, (6 blank), 150, (6 blank) leaves. Contemporary flexible vellum with ties. With the blind stamp of a certain "Esteban Mendez". At the end is the subscription of Lorenzo Boturini, who states to have copied the manuscript in 1738 from a copy housed in the Jesuit library St. Peter and Paul in Mexico. Written in a very clear and elegant Spanish writing, probably by a professional copist. This early account on Latin America, also known as Relacion de las cosas notables de la Nueva España, was written in the 16th century by the Spanish jurist Alonso de Zorita. It was copied by Boturini in the context of a larger project that he was carrying on, that of collecting all the written and archaeological sources on the history of Latin America. Boturini was a follower of G.B. Vico and his aim was that of not merely classifying the sources but also studying them within a modern anthropological and philosophical frame.In 1746 Boturini published the Idea de una Nueva Historia General de la America Septentrional (Madrid, Juan de Zuñiga), where on chapter X (Manuscriptos de autores españoles) the present manuscript is quoted. In the Idea the author, who traveled to Mexico in 1735 in order to trace the historical origins of Our Lady of Guadeloupe, draws on his own collection of Mexican-Indian manuscripts, which John B. Glass termed "the most important collection for Mexican ethno-history ever assembled". The second part of the book, the Catalogo del museo historico indiano del cavallero Lorenzo Boturini Benaducci, Señor de la Torre, y de Hono, lists the items in the Boturini's collection.His project of a Historia General remained however unfullfilled. After Boturini's death, his library and archive were dispersed (cf. G. Antei, El Caballero Andante, Guadalupe, 2007; F. Venturi, Un Vichiano tra Messico e Spagna: Lorenzo Boturini Benaduce, in: "Rivista storica Italiana", LXXVII, 1975, pp. 770-784).Alonso de Zorita (Cordoba 1512- Granada 1585) was appointed judge in 1547 in Santo Domingo, in 1553 in Guatemala and then in 1556 in Mexico City. He was a follower of Bartolomé de las Casas and tried to respect the rights of the local populations. Beside the present work, which remained unpublished until the 20th century (Breve y Sumaria Relacion de los Señores de la Nueva España, Mexico, Imprenta Universitaria, 1942), Zorita is the author of a Summa de los Tributos, Leyes y ordenanazas del Nuevo Mundo. In the Relacion he frankly states his deep regret for the violence against the Indios and seems to approve the utopical ideas of the Franciscan missionaries. Showing great historiographical accuracy, he reports all the facts and sources he was able to find on the pre-Columbian period. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition, illustrated with a frontispiece Jongmann and a title tag.         Tractatus de commerciis, et cambio. In quo non minus opportune, quam iuxta occasionem copiose tractatur de mora, interesse, usura, solemnitate scripturae, asse in pondere, et valore, de moneta, solutionibus, oblatione, deposito, praescriptionibus, compensationibus, iurium cessionibus, delegationibus, adiudicatione nominis debitoris, hypotheca...

      In folio (cm 30,5); senza legatura; pp. (8), 755, (125). Palgrave, III, p. 360. Kress, 369. ICCU, ITICCUPUVE07102. \

        EL REY. POR QUANTO HAVIENDOSE RECONOCIDO LOS PERJUICIOS, INCONVENIENTES, Y LITIGIOS, QUE SE OFRECEN EN LOS CABILDOS DE LAS CIUDADES DE LAS INDIAS...[caption title]

      [Madrid. 1738].. 3pp. Folio. Dbd. Maltese cross printed at head of title. Accomplished in manuscript at Aranjuez, Spain on April 11, 1738, signed by Miguel de Villanueva. Manuscript inscription on verso of last printed page written on Nov. 14, 1738 in Santiago de Chile. Contemporary annotation on first page, light dampstaining in margins. A very good copy. A rare proclamation by Philip V, King of Spain, declaring that major lieutenants (Alfereces Mayores) of the cities, towns, and villages of Peru are to be recognized over the unpaid local judges (los Alcaldes) of the Holy Brotherhood (Santa Hermandad). Numerous local brotherhoods had served as municipal peacekeeping organizations in Spain since the Middle Ages. The Holy Brotherhood was established by Ferdinand and Isabella to suppress the original municipal leagues and guarantee personal security and public order, and local brotherhoods were organized in New Spain and Peru. An attempt to regulate the power of the brotherhoods, this decree was printed in Madrid and distributed to royal officials in all the provinces of the viceroyalty of Peru. This copy, accomplished at Aranjuez on April 11, 1738, is signed by Miguel de Villanueva as representative of the King of Spain, with the inscription: "Yo el Rey." A manuscript note on the verso of the last printed page, written in the city of Santiago on Nov. 14, 1738, describes an instance of the distribution of the text in Chile. An important proclamation regarding local governance in the viceroyalty of Peru, with a contemporary manuscript inscription regarding the text's distribution in Chile. Not in Medina BHA or OCLC.

        A compleat system of opticks.

      for the author, Cambridge 1738 - SMITH, Robert(1689--1768). A compleat system of opticks. 2 vols. in 1, 4to. [6], vi, [8], 455, 171, [13]pp. 83 folding plates. 288 x 225 mm. Full antique calf, gilt, preserving original morocco spine label and original marbled endpapers. Occasional foxing or browning, slight soiling in first & last leaves, but a very good and large copy. Contemporary signatures & stamp on title; initials on fore-edge. Cambridge: for the author, 1738. FIRST EDITION. Probably the most influential textbook of optics in the 18th century, covering light, color, theory of vision, construction of microscopes and telescopes, methods of grinding and polishing lenses, astronomical discoveries, and concluding with "An essay upon distinct and indistinct vision" by physician James Jurin(1684--1750; see G-M 1689)."Smith developed a very comprehensive set of geometric propositions for the computation of the focus, location, magnification, brightness, and aberrations of systems of lenses and mirrors. Apparently he was the first person to construct images by means of an unrefracted central ray and a ray parallel to the axis that is refracted through the focus. He also derived a particular case of the relationship now known as the Smith-Helmholtz formula or the theorem of Lagrange"(DSB). DNB. BOA I 194. Becker 345. Blake 422. DNB. BOA I 194. Becker 345. Blake 422.

        A letter to the Right Rev. Dr. Warren, on his conduct as Bishop of Bangor:

      by Shôn Gwialan.A minor but interesting piece by David Williams (1738-1816), the political and religious theorist and founder of the Literary Fund, using the pseudonym "Shôn Gwialan", written at the behest of Thomas Williams (1737-1802), the wealthy Welsh copper magnate and industrialist.The letter relates not only to Bishop Warren's general administration of the diocese (the clergy "a set of base, ungrateful wretches"), but also to the Bishop's personal behaviour over the forcible ejection from his office of Samuel Grindley, the Deputy Registrar, which had resulted in the Bishop's criminal prosecution. Williams points out that in France 18 Archbishops, 118 bishops, 11,850 canons, 3000 superiors of convents (&c.) have been massacred or expelled. Bishop Warren should take notice.* The ms notes read:"An electioneering squib supposed to have been written by Dd Williams author of the History of Monmouthshire at the request of the late Mr Williams of Llanidan Anglesey because the Bishop's good wishes were for Lord Penrhyn & against the Anglesey interest. Lord Penrhyn & Sir Robt Williams Bart. were the two candidates".For a good commentary of the Parliamentary constituency of Caernarvonshire, the election of June 1796, and the Bishop of Bangor's support for Richard Pennant, Lord Penrhyn, see, e.g. R.G.         The Tryal of John Peter Zenger, of New-York, Printer, Who Was Lately Try'd and Acquitted for Printing and a Libel Against the Government. [Bound with]: Remarks on the Trial of John Peter Zenger ?

      London: J. Wilford, behind the Chapter-House, St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1738. Third edition. [2], 32; iv, 27pp. 4to. Modern red half morocco and cloth, spine gilt, uncut. Very minor soiling. Near fine. The third London edition of the transcript of Zenger's famous trial, one of four London editions of that year, issued two years after the New York first edition.  Zenger was put on trial for satirical remarks made in his newspaper about the Governor of New York.  His trial is usually considered to be the first case involving freedom of the press in America.  The REMARKS... provide an account of the Zenger trial and its repercussions concerning British law, by two lawyers who evidently felt conviction would have been more appropriate.  "Zenger's acquittal received wide attention in Europe for its revolutionary aspects, which apparently raised popular interest.  These remarks, supposedly by two eminent American lawyers, disparage Andrew Hamilton's 'wild and idle Harangue' that won Zenger's release" - Streeter.

        Two unidentified small wash drawings

      N.p., 1738. Each signed, possibly in anoher hand, lower left, in ink, "Gravelot". 1 vols. 9.3 x 7.4 cm. The two matted together and framed. Both drawing slightly toned, but very good. The first illustration, of a Monkey addressing a Lion and a Wolf, is almost certainly from Gravelot's English period (1733-1746) and could well be a preliminary sketch for Gay's FABLES; yet the second drawing, depicting a female figure driving a chariot, displays an allegorical style reminiscent in style and theme to his illustratons for ICONOLOGIE PAR FIGURES (ca. 1789).

        Memoirs of the Royal Society;

      London - Printed by G. Smith 1738 - A very scarce and sought after book. Volume one only. Fourteen plates including frontis, ten of which are folding. Benjamin Baddam (c16931740) was a printer and compiler of the Memoirs of the Royal Society. He compiled an abridgement of the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions. It was printed for him between 1738 and 1744 by Godfrey Smith in ten volumes, with 131 folding plates drawn by G. Smith and engraved by James Hulett, under the title Memoirs of the Royal Society, being a new abridgment of the Philosophical Transactions for the years 1665 to 1735. Previous abridgements of the Philosophical Transactions had been carried out on a piecemeal basis, whereas Baddam's version provided continuity and uniformity for the first time. Condition: The boards are missing. The text block is firm. Internally the pages are generally clean, with slight browning. There is some very mild spotting, which is mostly limited to the first and last couple of pages. There is the occasional handling mark. The back endpaper is chipped.
