Andr. Kalsenium.

1737 - Leiden, apud C. Wishoff, 1737. 8:o. (16),270,(44) pp. + Leiden, apud C. Wishoff, 1737. 8:o. (8),24 pp. Uncut in contemporary grey paper boards, worn. Heavy spotting on spine, later MS label. Plain paper slipcase with label printed in red. Occasional minor foxing and ruststains. Small hole in the page number on p. 5 and in the margin on index leave T7. Ruststain in lower margin. on p. 145. Old dedication "Kalmar nation" on front flyleaf and an A at bottom of title-page, which also contains a bookbinder's note "papr" in outer margin. A fine copy. Soulsby 276 for both works which were published together. The "Critica botanica", which constitutes a further development of aphorisms 210-314 in Fundamenta botanica, established Linnaeus' rules when naming the plants genus and species, which had long been a problematic issue in botany with its long and complicated denomination of species' seemingly intended to confuse rather than clarify. According to "Critica botanica" a species is named using a single word and not just any kind of names were permitted. It was for instance recommended, that if in any doubt, to name the genus after some famous botanist. For the species itself a longer description is used containing a thorough characteristic though with an upper limit as to the number of words used. The "Critica botanica" contains a noteworthy appendix, Johan Browallius' (1707-55) "Discursus" about the importance of introducing natural science as a subject in schools and colleges. It is a typical plea of its time, shared by many, of the benefits natural science in education could reap for society. Linnaeus had become acquainted with Browallius during his time in Falun where the latter was chaplain and private tutor with the County Governor Nils Reuterholm. Under Linnaeus' influence Browallius came to develop a strong interest in the natural sciences and in the year when "Discursus" was published he was awarded a professorship in the natural sciences at Åbo. Whilst at Åbo he introduced Linnaeus' taxonomy before he was transferred to the theological faculty. Browallius, who became the Bishop of Åbo in 1749, also authored the first biography of Linneaus, "Curriculum vitæ Caroli Linnæi" (Swedish translation in 1920). Linnaeus reciprocated by naming the plant genus Browallia after his friend. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Seu Fundamentorum botanicorum pars IV. Accedit Johannis Browallii De necessitate historiæ naturalis discursus. Leiden, apud C. Wishoff, 1737. 8:o. (16),270,(44) s. + BROWALLIUS, JOHAN.

Il Conte d'Essex was first performed at La Scala in Milan in the autumn of 1818. The music for the ballet is ascribed to the Austrian writer and composer Peter Lichtenthal (1780-1853). "He was a close friend of Mozart's son Karl, and an ardent proponent of Mozart's chamber music. He composed about 50 works, including seven ballets for the Teatro alla Scala, church music, orchestral music (about 15 symphonies), chamber music, songs, piano and organ works. A number of these were published; most of his manuscripts are in the Milan Conservatory library." Alfred Loewenberg and Bruce Carr in Grove Music Online."Gioia';s works show the cross-fertilization between opera and pantomime balletn dancer and choreographer. ". his prodigious output amounted to some 95 different ballets in more than 220 productions. Gioia';s works show the cross-fertilization between opera and pantomime ballet. Gioia';s ballets were important models for Italian operas of his and the following generation. The realistic acting technique of dancers in Gioia';s ballets influenced the expressive art of such outstanding young singers as Pasta and Malibran." Kathleen Kuzmick Hansell in Grove Music Online.

Archive of Documents and Letters, covering the period 1769 - 1789, on the management by Stanislas Foache of business and properties in Saint Domingue which were the property of M. Le Vicomte de la Belinaye, captain of Dragoons in Fougeres, France

No Binding. Near Fine. Archive of documents, letters and papers which relate primarily to the residential real estate holdings of Viscount Belinaye. There is little mention of slavery, aside from accounts of slave sales, as is usually found in the more normally encountered plantation archives. The archive presents a facet of commerce on Saint Domingue not generally encountered. However, Belinaye's business agent in Saint Domingue was a noted slave trader, Stanislas Foache (Le Havre 1737-1806), who began working for Belinaye in 1776. The collection includes twenty six letters by Foache. Rene Maurice Viscount de Belinaye was later condemned by the Revolutionary Council and his estate was liquidated which accounts for the termination of this archive in 1789. The Belinaye family's plantation in Saint Domingue was burned in 1791. The archive includes approximately 26 letters written from Cap Francais by Stanislas Foache, ship owner, factor, agent and slave trader, totaling approximately 60 pages mainly quarto, which are further amplified by 15 statements of accounts in the form of large, detailed folding tables, which contain financial statements pertaining to Belinaye's affairs, which are laid in to the letters. These detailed letters concern the management or properties and rents, trade news, also ships and shipping, the billeting of military officers due to the War with England. Stanislas Foache, nick-named "the Good" became Belinaye's agent in Saint Domingue. Foache made his fortune in the slave trade, along with his brother Martin Pierre Foache. He was secretary of the King in 1776 and attached to the Grand Council. He began trading in Cap Francais in Saint Domingue, under the name of Stanislas Foache, Hellot & Compagnie, which Foache, Morange & Hardivillier, in 1787. Foache is one of the best documented of the negociants, he made money by managing affairs of French absentee landlords, such as Belinaye, and he seemingly made as much off his quite large plantation in Jean Rabel as he did off his equally important mercantile house in Cap. Foache and his family owned some 584 slaves, in Saint Domingue, and the family also owned a concern in Le Havre back in France. He emigrated to London in 1796-1802. The archive includes an additional 18 documents which include statements of accounts in the form of folding tables, and some additional documents, including bills of lading, correspondence, partially printed circular letters, etc. These documents include account statements by Belinaye's former agent for the periods 1769-1771 and 1771-1775. There is a copy of the power of attorney given by Rene Maurice Viscount de Belinaye to Stanislas Foache "negotiant au Cap", May 1775 for the management of his business affairs. Folio, 8 pages. And an inventory of the papers left by M. de La Belinaye to Mr. Dufresne du Pontbriant, as his attorney in Saint Domingue "for the management of property which I have in Saint Domingue." Folio 6 pages. See: King, Stewart R., Blue Coat or Powdered Wig: Free People of Color in Pre-Revolutionary Saint-Domingue (Athens: University of Georgia Press, 2001) pp., 175, 208. The Foache sugar plantation is the subject of Gabriel Debien's Plantations et esclaves.

Venezia, Gius. Bettinelli, 1737, - in-8, pp. CXXXV, Legatura coeva in mezza pelle e angoli.

Goldornamentik am Rücken, sehr guter Zustand, durchgehend sauber, keine Stockflecken. Buchblock tadellos; ca. 900 Seiten, 19 Teile in 1 Band, jeweils neubeginnend paginiert, vollständig vorliegend. Frontispiz Portrait F.de Paris, 19 Kupfertafeln - davon 1 Falttafel (vorher - nachher bez. \" (Wikipedia). 19 x 26 Cm. 1,7 Kg. +++ Stichwörter: Jansenismus Jansénisme Kirchengeschichte Wunderbare Krankenheilung Medizin Transen Bibliophilie Blaise Pascal Port Royal Parapsychologie Spontanheilung Scharlatanerie Paris Abbé Nicole Esoterik Protestantismus Zauberei Französische Revolution Paris Mystérieux Versand D: 5,50 EUR Jansenismus Jansénisme Kirchengeschichte Wunderbare Krankenheilung Medizin Transen Bibliophilie Blaise Pascal Port Royal Parapsychologie Spontanheilung Scharlatanerie Paris Abbé Nicole Esoterik Protestantismus Zauberei Französische Revolution Paris Mystérieux

Published by Thomas Birth M.A., F.R.S. and member of the Society of Antiquaries. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION 1737, 2 volumes, complete set. 8vo, approximately 200 x 120 mm, 8 x 4¾ inches, title pages printed red and black, 6 engraved plates of which 5 are folding and 2 of the folding sheets bear 2 plates each, making a total of 8 engraved plates as required, (some copies were issued with 8 plates on 8 sheets of which 3 folding, possibly later issues with the 2 plate sheets cut in half see Copac, item 6 Chetham's Library), woodcut headpieces and decorated initials, pages: (6), lxxii, (2), ix, (1), 92, 89-356; (4), 359-540, (6), 591-800, the irregular pagination is present in all copies, collated and guaranteed complete, Parts I, II, III and IV have added title-pages, the first 3 dated 1736, Part IV dated 1737, bound in full antique calf, double ruled gilt border to covers, rebacked to style with raised bands, gilt rules and gilt lettered morocco label, edges speckled red, original endpapers retained. Covers and corners slightly worn, brief ink note on front endpapers which are age-browned, 2 leaves in Volume II have some pale brown staining, otherwise text and plates clean and bright, binding tight and firm. A very good set of a scarce work containing the first publication in any language of Sir Isaac Newton's study of the Sacred Cubit of the Jews. See Babson, Catalogue of the Works of Sir Isaac Newton, Second Supplement, page 20, No. 040. Newton's Dissertation is printed in Volume II from page 405 - 433 'Translated from the Latin of Sir Isaac Newton, not yet published'. According to Gjertsen, The Newton Handbook, page 6, it is the most elusive of Newton's published works, known in just two editions, the 1737 Greaves' Miscellaneous Works and a 1744 edition in Latin. 'Newton's argument is clear, detailed and precise; it is also without direction, a study in pure metrology'. John Greaves (1602-1652) mathematician and astronomer was Savilian professor of astronomy at Oxford University but this collected edition of his works published posthumously reflects very wide interests, from chicken hatcheries to the Pyramids with just two articles on astronomy. Since Newton's Dissertation was based on Greaves' measurements of the Great Pyramid the editor Thomas Birch saw fit to publish it in the collection and it is included in the partial list of contents on the title page of Volume I. Greaves earlier works published on his return from his travels, A Discourse of the Roman Foot (1647) and Pyramidographia (1646), were found in Newton's library.         Meijer, Hendrik - Dutch ice skating/winter scene.

The Hague: Henri Scheurleer, 1737.

THE HAGUE: HENRI SCHEURLEER, 1737 - 2° (ca. 54 x 38 cm). 42 engraved maps handcoloured in outline, 12 double-page or folding (80x45cm). Some maps repaired along inner and slightly soiled at outer margin. THE FIRST AUTHORITATIVE WESTERN ATLAS OF CHINA. Jean-Baptiste du Halde’s 4-volume work on L’empire de la Chine et de la Tartarie Chinoise had appeared in 1735, with 41 maps of the Chinese provinces, Tartary, Tibet and Korea. As Du Halde states in the preface, these maps were adaptations of Chinese originals produced for the Emperor and in co-operation with Jesuit missionaries. The adaptations were brilliantly executed by D’Anville, the royal geographer, who had also created four entirely new general maps. A separate atlas was issued in 1737, both in Paris by Dezauche under the title Atlas general de la Chine, and by Scheurleer (as above), the former containing 50 and the latter 42 maps. Besides depicting China in unprecedented detail, this was the first Western atlas to show Tibet and a separate Korea. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 5550

Including: D'Anville, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon.

The Hague, Henri Scheurleer, 1736-1737. - 4 text volumes & atlas. 4to (text vols) and folio (atlas). Title-pages printed in red and black, each with engraved vignette (2 variants), further with 53 engraved plates, maps and views (including an integral frontispiece in volume 2; 21 folding), 11 engraved illustrations in the text, including several headpieces. The atlas with 42 engraved maps (12 double-page or folding). Contemporary mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine, with gold-tooled yellow and blue title labels, red edges, paste-paper endleaves (text volumes); contemporary blind-tooled calf, gold-tooled spine, marbled endleaves (atlas volume). First quarto edition of Du Halde's encyclopaedic account of Chinese history and culture, also touching on Korea, Tibet and Alaska. "Historically, this work must be regarded as monumental. Its strength lies in the vast amount and variety of interesting details, which must have given its readers an impression of the magnificence of the Chinese empire , and the wide range of achievements of the Chinese people in literature, science, philosophy and art" (Löwendahl). The atlas was published to accompany the four text volumes. - Du Halde, who became a Jesuit priest in 1708, was entrusted by his superiors to edit the published and manuscript accounts of Jesuit travellers in China. The present work records the narratives of 27 of these missionaries. Also notable is the "Relation succinte du voyage du capitaine Beering dans la Sibérie", which is the first published account of Vitus Bering's 1728 voyage through the eponymous straits, whose importance he failed to recognize after sighting no land. Beerings depuis la ville de Tobolsk jusqu' à Kamtschatka" (bound at the end of the atlas) is based on Bering's manuscript map. Howes notes that Du Halde's account is "the first book describing any part of Alaska [.]". - Text volumes with small, contemporary(?) bookseller's ticket of Lausanne-based bookseller Mourer. Pi2 of vol. 4 bound in vol. 1; leaf 4H3 in 2nd volume remargined; a duplicate is bound in vol. 1. Leaf A1 of vol. 4 is present twice: with and without the engraved headpiece (the latter probably should have been cancelled and replaced by the first). Overall in very good condition, with a few waterstains and some browning. Bindings slightly worn and some corners slightly damaged. The title-page of the atlas volume slightly dirty, otherwise in very good condition, with the binding worn and the spine damaged at head and foot. Cordier, Sinica, col. 48-49; Howes D-546; Löwendahl 398 & 401; Walravens, China illustrata 26 & 37. [Attributes: First Edition]
