        ESSAI POLITIQUE SUR LA COMMERCE

Francois Changuion, Amsterdam 1735 - (4), (10=catalogue), 251 pp. small 8to (150*95 mm). Title printed in red, with engraved vignette portrait of Erasmus by B. Picart (1718). New black halfcalf with black and white marbled boards, red letterpiece with gilt title on spine. New endpapers. The second (pirated?) edition, preceded by a 12mo edition (in 3 issues) published in Rouen one year earlier. This work, "the inside account of the system of John Law (for whom the author was personal secretary), is important" (Palgrave). The publication of Melon's Essai resulted in his famous controversy with Dutot. It was a great success in France and abroad and exerted a considerable influence, claims Schumpeter, who notes that the misleading term neo-mercantilism was coined to describe Melon's economic theories. Actually, he stands as probably the first mercantilist theoretician in France, and his liberal ideas were praised by Voltaire: . PROVENANCE: Freie Universitaet Berlin (Stamp and cancel at verso of title, and as usual on p. 48), AGL (contemp. hand crossed out on title). Kress 4229. Schumpeter p.174

A MAP OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA WITH THE FRENCH AND SPANISH SETTLEMENTS ADJACENT THERETO

London, 1735. Folio. Expertly bound to style in half 18th-century russia over original 18th-century coated paper-covered boards, spine gilt, red morocco label. Very good. In a blue half morocco and cloth box, titled in gilt on the spine. A monument to 18th-century American cartography: a highly attractive fully colored copy of the first large-scale map of North America, and the first printed map to show the thirteen colonies. Popple maps with full contemporary color are exceedingly rare; we have handled only one other copy, and the only other comparable example to have appeared at auction in the past thirty years is the Siebert/Freilich copy. Popple produced this map under the auspices of the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to help settle disputes arising from the rival expansion of English, Spanish, and French colonies. "France claimed not only Canada, but also territories drained by the Mississippi and its tributaries - in practical terms, an area of half a continent" - Goss, p.122. The present copy of Popple's map, with its full contemporary hand-coloring, would have been particularly useful in these disputes. Mark Babinski, in his masterly monograph on this map, notes: "The typical coloring of fully colored copies...is described best by a contemporary manuscript legend on the end-paper affixing the Key map to the binding in the King George III copy at the British Library: 'Green - Indian Countrys. Red - English. Yellow - Spanish. Blue - French. Purple - Dutch.'" The careful demarcation of the disputed areas by color would have made the identification of whether a particular location was in one or another "zone" a great deal easier. Thus the coloring adds a whole new dimension to a map that is usually only seen in its uncolored state, and perhaps suggests that the copies with full hand-coloring were originally produced for some as-yet unrediscovered official use to do with the international land disputes of the time. Benjamin Franklin, on May 22, 1746, ordered two copies of this map, "one bound the other in sheets," for the Pennsylvania Assembly. It was the only map of sufficient size and grandeur available - and the map is on a grand scale: if actually assembled it would result in a rectangle over eight feet square. Its coverage extends from the Grand Banks off Newfoundland to about ten degrees west of Lake Superior, and from the Great Lakes to the north coast of South America. Several of the sections are illustrated with handsome pictorial insets, including views of New York City, Niagara Falls, Mexico City, and Quebec, and inset maps of Boston, Charles-Town, Providence, Bermuda, and a number of others. "Little is known of Henry Popple except that he came from a family whose members had served the Board of Trade and Plantations for three generations, a connection that must have been a factor in his undertaking the map, his only known cartographic work" - McCorkle. Babinski has made a detailed study of the issues and states of the Popple map. This copy is in Babinski's state 5: the imprint on sheet 20 reads, "London Engrav'd by Willm. Henry Toms 1733"; and sheet one includes the engraved figure "1" in the upper left corner just above the intersection of the two neat lines. The very rare small format table of contents is present. The key map is in Babinski's state 1, with only Toms' name below the border at the bottom and no additional place names in the 17 small insets.

Geometrical Lectures: Explaining the Generation, Nature and Properties of Curve Lines. Read in the University of Cambridge by Isaac Barrow, D D

London : Stephen Austen , 1735 A good copy of Issac Barrow's Geometrical Lectures - first delivered between 1664-1666 at Cambridge University and then published with Isaac Newton's revisions, corrections and amendments in latin in 1683, after Barrow's death in 1677. This is the first English translation of Barrow's work, by Edmund Stone FRS - a Scottish mathematician. In recent full panelled calf binding - classed as 'good' only because 4 of the 11 folding plates are in facsimile.Barrow is best known for an early use of calculus, by which he became credited for the development of the First Principle of Calculus - 'The definite integration of a function is related to its antiderivative, which can be determined by differentiation. Thus there is a guarantee that anantiderivative exists for any continuous function'. He applied this concept to solve the determination of the tangent of a Kappa Curve. This set of lectures, especially chapters 10 & 11, presented a series of proofs applying the principles that led to the development of modern day Calculus. He was studied by Isaac Newton who developed this further and came into conflict with Leibniz in 1693, whose 'Acta Eruditorum' a geometrical proof of the fundamental theorem of the calculus, claimed no links to Barrow's earlier work. Later study (see 'Barrow and Leibniz on the fundamental theorem of the calculus' by Michael Nauenberg, 2011) has shown that Leibniz' proof was drawn from Barrow's solutions as published in this work. Michael Nauenberg reproduces figure 109 of plate 5 in his analysis. The binding has raised bands and title label to spine, with panelled design to boards. it is in near fine condition. The binder has not replaced the front endpaper and has taped in the frontispiece portrait of Barrow. Title page dated 1735 again with archival tape; authors preface pp i-vi; errata; lectures with 11 folding plates - 4 in facsimile (plates 1, 2, 5, 11) 303pp; Addenda 4pp; Finis; notes 1p; Books printed for Stephen Austen 2pp.. Plate 3 has a frayed bottom edge and stamp to verso, plate 4 has very small loss to top; plate 9 has a frayed side and plate 10 has had a little repair. Text pages have some brown toning but are clean and generally in very good condition. A scarce and important work.

VOYAGES FAITS PRINCIPALEMENT EN ASIE DANS LES XII, XIII, XIV, ET XV SIECLES...ACCOMPAGNE'D DE L'HISTOIRE DES SARASINS ET DES TARTARES, ET PRECEDEZ D'UNE INTRODUCTION CONCERNANT LES VOYAGES ET LES NOUVELLES DECOUVERTES DES PRINCIPAUX VOYAGEURS

La Haye, 1735. Quarto. Contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked, retaining original ornately gilt spines, leather labels. 19th-century bookplates on front endleaves. Light age- toning and scattered foxing. Very good. This is a reissue of Bergeron's RECUEIL DE DIVERS VOYAGES CURIEUX EN TARTARIE (Leyden, 1729), including his important TRAICTE DE LA NAVIGATION, the latter containing many important American references. "Bergeron translated and edited many travels to Tartary, and wrote descriptions of that region. These works were published in Paris in 1634 and reprinted in Leiden in 1729 in two volumes entitled: RECUEIL DE DIVERS VOYAGES CURIEUX EN TARTARIE. Each part has its own title page and the text is in two columns. The TRAICTE DE LA NAVIGATION is printed at the beginning of the first volume..." - Borba de Moraes. Bergeron's TRAICTE DE LA NAVIGATION is described by Borba de Moraes as "one of the first studies of the history of navigation to be undertaken in France" and by Maggs as "the first scientific review of the history and results of geographical study." It contains much material on instruments and methods of navigation with reference to many early authors on the topics. There are detailed accounts of early voyages of discovery throughout the world made by the British, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, and Russians, with particular attention paid to the French in Canada and the discovery of America. Of significant interest are the accounts of the explorations and voyages of Champlain, Frobisher, Hudson, and Lescarbot, the search for a northwest passage, the development of the fur trade and establishment of New France, the discovery of Florida and Brazil, the activities of the Jesuits, and much more. The remainder of the work collects Asian travels from the 12th through 15th centuries, including those of Marco Polo, Benjamin de Tudele, Jean Du Plan-Carpin, Jean de Mandeville, Ambroise Contarini, etc. The folding maps relate to these Asian travels and the account of the Tartary mentioned in the title.

Compose 36 libretti d'opera d'argomento storico e mitologico, fra i quali Gli inganni felici, 1695, Faramondo, 1698, Lucio Vero, 1700, Merope, 1711, Alessandro Severo, 1716, Griselda, 1718, Teuzzone, 1719, Semiramide, 1725, e 17 azioni sacre per oratori. 18mo secolo [Attributes: First Edition]

Two volumes. Numbered columns (see Borba de Moraes for detailed collation) plus five folding engraved maps. Several in-text engravings. Quarto. Contemporary speckled calf, spines ornately gilt with leather labels. Neatly rebacked, retaining original spines. 19th century bookplates on front endleaves. Light toning and scattered foxing. Bergeron's TRAICTE DE LA NAVIGATION is described by Borba de Moraes as "one of the first studies of the history of navigation to be undertaken in France," and by Maggs as "the first scientific review of the history and results of geographical study." It contains much material on instruments and methods of navigation with reference to many early authors on the topics. There are detailed accounts of early voyages of discovery throughout the world made by the British, Spanish, Swedish, Portuguese, Dutch, French and Russians, with particular attention paid to the French in Canada and the discovery of America. Of significant interest are the accounts of the explorations and voyages of Champlain, Frobisher, Hudson, and Lescarbot, the search for the northwest passage, the development of the fur trade and establishment of New France, the discovery of Florida and Brazil, the activities of the Jesuits, and much more. The remainder of the work collects Asian travels from the 12th through 15th centuries, including Marco Polo, Benjamin de Tudele, Jean Du Plan-Carpin, Jean de Mandeville, Ambroise Contarini, etc. The folding maps relate to these Asian travels and the account of the Tartary mentioned in the title.
