Voyages et Avantures de Jacques Massé

Cologne: Jaques Kainkus, c., 1734. Duodecimo, frontispiece, title-page printed in black and red; contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments; bookplate and armorial gilt stamp on front board of F. Lachêvre. Third edition. A handsome copy of the third edition (Rosenberg edition 'C'), with frontispiece portrait of Massé and title-page vignette of Mercury. Friederich comments that the importance of mining and irrigation to the Australians makes it the only work 'to foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia'. Tyssot de Patot was a well-known Huguenot free-thinker, whose writings were a continual source of scandal: Voltaire thought that he had 'carried the torch of discord into their homeland'. Certainly the antagonistically anti-religious stance of this novel created much ill-feeling. Atkinson comments that because 'open criticism of the Bible is so frequent' he will have to content himself with listing just a few of the more extreme examples. Massé shipwrecks on the Southern continent at '44 South latitude, almost at the point where Kerguelen Island will be found to be on modern maps' (Atkinson). Whilst most of the survivors of the wreck are content to maintain a large presence on the coast, Massé and his friend Moret travel inland where they settle in an enormous and well-organised utopia, 'a plentiful, fruitful country, a land of blessing and peace … where human blood is sacred and safe from the rage and tyranny of great men'. They become so enamoured of their Australian hosts that they abjure their faith and their European heritage, and it is only when Moret is betrayed by his liaison with a treacherous queen that they reluctantly flee, escaping rather fortuitously by a subterranean river which deposits them close by the original settlement. They remain besieged in the camp for another twelve years before they are finally picked up by a Portuguese ship. Rosenberg argues for a date of around 1734 for this edition, to coincide with the renewed interest in Tyssot's work at the time (he cites 1733 English and 1737 German editions). His theory is that this renewal of interest 'arose because it was confused with Mandeville's Fable of the Bees which, by 1730, had achieved considerable notoriety'.

Les Princesses Malabares, ou le Célibat Philosophique . Ouvrage interessant & curieux, avec des Notes Historiques & Critiques

chez Thomas Franco", 'Andrinople 1734 - Duodecimo, title page slightly damaged at inner margin; a few stains but a good copy in old quarter calf. First edition of this allegorical satire on French society, an orientalist fantasy with Malabar princesses and many of the usual props including sultans and harems. Its author is believed to have been de Longue, an obscure writer who does not make an appearance in Nouvelle Biographie Générale, but it has also been attributed variously to the abbé Lenglet Dufresnoy, and to one Quesnel, who is mentioned in the preface, and who died in the Bastille. This is an odd book, its most curious feature the use of the anagram. Most of the satire remains allegorical (rather than directed at individuals or institutions): thus for example there are critiques of 'Raison' and 'Religion,' but they become 'Rasoni' and 'Roligine.' The subterfuge may seem redundant when the satire is of a concept, but anyway these rather blatant anagrams are explained in a key at the end of the book. Nonetheless, this enigmatic style did not save the book from the fire: its allegorical satire on French society together with its alleged atheism, meant that it was condemned to be burnt by an arrêt du Parlement in 1734, which adds to its rarity.         An Essay on Man. In Epistles to a Friend

      J. Wilford, 1733 -, London 1734 - Four volumes in one, small folio; a few upper margins cut close touching one or two page numerals; a good set in crushed red-brown morocco gilt by Morrell. Pope's great poem. A beautifully bound edition of one of the greatest long poems in the English language. Second edition of the first part, the others first editions. An Essay on Man is one of the best known poems by the poet and satirist Pope. It was widely read on publication, and occasioned a response from Voltaire, La Loi Naturelle of 1756. Pope was very attached to the work, and crushed by some of the negative responses it engendered, in particular its demolition by a Swiss professor, Jean-Pierre de Crousaz. Not until the 1735 publication of his Works did Pope firmly claim authorship of the work, commenting: 'If I could flatter myself that this Essay has any merit, it is in steering betwixt the extremes of doctrines seemingly opposite, in passing over terms utterly unintelligible, and in forming a temperate yet not inconsistent, and a short yet not imperfect system of Ethics'.         Kort beskrifning, om eld- och luft-machin, wid Dannemora grufwor dedicerad til respective herrar interessenterne, utaf samma importanta wärck.

Sthlm, B. G. Schneider, 1734. 4:o. (8),52 s. & 1 stor utvikbar grav. plansch. Frihetstidens optimistiska utilitarism personifieras i Mårten Triewald (1691-1747).

The Life of the Late Honourable Robert Price, Esq

London - Printed by the Appointment of the Family, 1734. London - Printed by the Appointment of the Family, 1734 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Full calf leather binding with engraved portrait of Price to title page. Appears to be a variant issue, without the dedication identifying Curll as the author, ora copy of the last will and testament of Price. One of the few early biographies of an English judge whose sturdy independence of the King was renowned. Edmund Curll (c. 1675 - December 11, 1747) was an English bookseller and publisher. His name has become synonymous, through the attacks on him by Alexander Pope, with unscrupulous publication and publicity. Curll rose from poverty to wealth through his publishing, and he did this by approaching book printing in a mercenary and unscrupulous manner. By cashing in on scandals, publishing pornography, offering up patent medicine, and using all publicity as good publicity, he managed a small empire of printing houses. He would publish high and low quality writing alike, so long as it sold. Condition: The binding is tight and firm and both covers are attached. The front and rear inner hinges are strained but holding. There is some wear to the extremities, including some rubbing of the boards and chips to the top and tail of the spine. Internally the book is clean and bright apart from some isolated spots. The top of the title page has been torn with loss that does affect the text. There is a copperplate inscription to the first front blank end paper, and some other isolated ink marks..

The Reasonableness and Certainty of theChristian Religion

London - Printed for J. J. and P. Knapton et al, 1734. London - Printed for J. J. and P. Knapton et al, 1734 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The Reasonableness and Certainty of the Christian Religionby Robert Jenkin (1656 - 1727) an English clergyman, a nonjuror of 1698, later Master of St. John's College, Cambridge, Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity, and opponent of John Locke. Intwo volumes complete. The sixth edition, corrected. ' The first edition of The Reasonableness and Certainty of the Christian Religion appeared in 1696-7. In this work Jenkin defends Christian belief against sceptics and critics such as Blount. He also criticises Lockes notion of thinking matter. . . The first volume presents the usual arguments for the necessity of revelation, and for the truth of the revelation recorded in the bible as authenticated by miracles and prophecy. What is less usual isthat Jenkin also discusses the defects, as he sees them, of heathen faiths and in particular of Islam. . . In the second volume Jenkin considers suchmatters as the competence and limitations of human reason, the notion of inspiration, the character of the bible and problems in using it, the nature of creation, whether there are other inhabitableworlds, the harmony of the bible and what science discovers, and the doctrine of the trinity. ' [from the catalogue of D. A. Pailin]From the antiquarian library of Emeritus Professor David Arthur Pailin, with bookplates to front pastedowns with further ink inscriptions dated April 1973. Contemporary previous owner's ink inscriptions to titles. Condition: In contemporary calf bindings. Externally, sound with good colourbut with some wear to extremities and marks to boards. Two joints starting one cracked withsome straining to hinges. Internally, text blocks firmly bound. Bright but withmarginal offsetting from bindings to first and last pages and odd slight spotting and handling marks. Slight evidence of past worming throughout volume two. Overall: GOOD.

The Usefulness, Truth and Excellency of the Christian Revelation

London - J. Noon, 1734. London - J. Noon, 1734 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce edition of James Foster's criticism of the work of Matthew Tindal. Third edition, corrected. Foster makes it clear that he does not disagree with Tindal in considering, for instance, that the supreme and immutable excellency of the religion of nature is by far the greatest and best part of Christianity, is as old as creation, and is as extensive as human nature, nor does he doubt that the chief design of revelation is to explain and restore this primitive religion in its original purity (p. 4). Nevertheless Foster considers it important to argue, against Tindal, for the advantages of a revelation, especially the Christian one, the good reason for Providence not declaring it universally, the authority of the New Testament, and the justification of the elements in Christianity that go beyond the dictates of natural religion. (From the library catalogue of David Palin)From the antiquarian library of Emeritus Professor David A. Palin of the University of Manchester (signature and bookplateto front pastedown), collected over a period of almost forty years. CONDITIONIn a mottled calf binding. Externally, sound, though with wear to the head and tail of the spine and some slight rubbing. Rearjoint cracked, with front joint failed and board detached. Boards are slightly warped. Internally, textblock is splitting and tender (may split fully in the post, despite careful packing). Institutional labels to front pastedown. Pages are generally bright and clean, with just the occasional patch of foxing. Overall: GOOD ONLY with a VERY GOOD interior..

Diccionario Nuevo de las Lenguas Española y Francesa

Pierre (Pedro) Foppens, Brussels 1734 - THIRD EDITION. Rare. 2 vols. in 2. Bound in whole leather over raised bands with gilt detail on the spines. There is some edgewear on both volumes, especially to the bottom corners of vol. 2, where the leather is completely worn away. The leather is splitting from the spines at the hinges, but the boards are still firmly attached. The pages are of inconsistent color: browned pages alternate in bunches with bright white pages. There is moderate foxing throughout and waterspots on a few pages. The pages have been cut, and the frontispiece, still the original size, has been folded at the bottom to fit, with a slight tear at the fold. Very little is known about Sobrino's life or work. He is thought to have been a Spanish-language teacher at the court of Brussels. The first edition of this dictionary was originally published in 1705. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Oktober 1694.
