(title in Italian and English), [1] (blank), 2-67, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Bass figured. "No. 342" printed to lower right corner of title. Signature, "Ino. Cracroft 1800," to label on upper board; "R. Cracroft 1829" to upper pastedown. Binding rebacked and recornered; label slightly defective with remnants of red sealing wax. Some minor soiling and occasional stains. A very good copy overall. . Rare. First English edition, later issue. Not in BUC. Walsh II, no. 29. RISM A732 (two copies of this issue only, one at the Library of Congress and one in the collection of André Meyer). The first issue was published in 1718 (with Walsh and Hare imprint; Walsh I, 541). "Albinoni's reputation has fluctuated, but is probably higher now than at any time since his own age, when his instrumental music was much in demand all over Europe, particularly among amateurs, and was ranked with that of Corelli, Vivaldi and (in France) Mascitti... Albinoni's earlier instrumental works in particular were reissued and reprinted as much as any in the first three decades of the century... His sonatas, which (with two exceptions) are in four movements, are conservative in layout... Albinoni's strongest asset is the pronounced individuality of his music, to which the insularity of his life may have contributed." Michael Talbot in Grove Music Online.

Beautiful copy.

A COLLECTION OF VOYAGES AND TRAVELS, SOME NOW FIRST PRINTED FROM ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPTS, OTHERS NOW FIRST PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH. In Six Volumes

London, 1732. Folio. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, raised bands, manuscript paper labels. Bindings rubbed and edgeworn, marbled paper scuffed, paper labels chipped. Very clean and fresh internally, and overall a handsome set. Untrimmed. This set bears the contemporary ownership inscription of John Leveson Gower on each titlepage. Gower (1694-1754) was a notable British Tory politician of the 18th century, a member of the Privy Council, and a member of a powerful aristocratic family long influential in British politics. This is the second edition of this significant collection of voyages, and an important continuation of the work of Hakluyt and Purchas. "This is a very valuable collection, both for its range and for the fact that it gives the original accounts" - Cox. Among the accounts included that relate to America are Brawern and Herckemann's voyage to Chile in 1642-43; Capt. John Monck's voyage to Hudson's Straits in 1619-20 to discover a passage between Greenland and America to the West Indies; Nieuhoff's travels in Brazil; Capt. John Smith's TRUE TRAVELS AND ADVENTURES IN EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA AND AMERICA DURING THE YEARS 1592-1629; the journal of a sailor who wintered at Spitzbergen in 1633-34; an account of Greenland by La Peyrere; James' search for a northwest passage in 1631-32; Ovalle's HISTORICAL RELATION... of Chile; Techo's history of the provinces of Paraguay, Rio de la Plata, Parana, Chile, Guaira, and Urvaica; Barbot's relation of Guiana; Col. Norwood's voyage to Virginia in 1609; John Gatonbe's VOYAGE FOR A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE in 1612, among others. Extensively illustrated with fine copper plate engraved maps and plates, many showing eastern ports and harbors, native peoples, natural history specimens, plants, etc. Although Sabin describes this 1732 second edition as containing "new title-pages only" in comparison with the first edition of 1704/32, in fact the pagination for the first four volumes is entirely different.

They travelled via Madras, through the Malay peninsula and along the coasts of Indochina and China. Part 1 gives an account of the voyage itself and part 2 an account of their stay in Johor at the southern tip of the Malay peninsula, where they played a role in a Sumatran adventurer's coup d'état. The two parts of the text are not bibliographically separate, part 2 beginning on p. 187, halfway through quire M. The publisher Jaime (or Jayme) de la Te y Sagau, better known for his musical publications and his own musical compositions, dedicated the book to the Duke of Cadaval, ending the dedication with a sonnet. It mentions the first Duke, Nuno Álvares Pereira de Melo, but he appears to have died in 1725 or 1727, so it may be directed to the third Duke Jaime (1684-1749). - Printed on thick paper. With a 1732 inscription on the title-page. The first few leaves are slightly tattered at the fore-edge, not approaching the text, and have been professionally restored, and there are some stains on the fore-edge. Boards show a few minor cuts and scrapes, but binding remains in good condition. A valuable eye-witness account of India, Southeast Asia and China in 1718. Howgego A47. Cordier, Sinica 3219. Löwendahl 377. PorBase (4 copies). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Then swänska Argus. [I]-II.

1732 - Stockholm, B. G. Schneider, 1732-34. 4:o. (419) + (420) pp. With woodcut vignette in volume I.Contemporary calf, worn, with raised bands, richly gilt but oxdized spine and brown label. Sprinkled edges. Endpapers lacking. Foxing and minor spotting throughout, minor tears to margins. Upper corners torn off in no. XI, volume I. No. XXXVI in volume l I heavily soiled in upper corner. Minor loss of letters due to paper thinning on the fourth leaf in no. 24 in volume II. Signature on title and initials "H. C. M." stamped on front cover. Lundstedt Sveriges periodiska litteratur 28. Complete with indexes in both volumes. "Then swänska Argus" was published with C. Carleson as a middleman and some of the material may also be written by him. The censor Johan Rosenadler is said to have been responsible for the content in no. 33 in the first volume. The journal has a confusing history of publication; Lundstedt has found up to six different editions of some issues. "Then swänska Argus" was modelled on English publications such as Tatler och Spectator and a large part of the content consisted of translations from these journals, but also from Le Misanthrope, an imitation published in Holland. However, the gifted writer Olof von Dalin (1708-83) soon put his mark on the translated texts and "Then swänska Argus" became a vehicle to modernize the heavy-handed written language which was customary in 18th century Sweden and make it more similar to the cultivated spoken Swedish which could be heard among the upper classes in Stockholm at the time. In the history of Swedish literature Dalin therefore stands out as one of the great linguistic renewers. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Laws of Maryland, enacted at a session of Assembly, begun and held at the City of Annapolis, on Tuesday, the Eleventh Day of July, in the Eighteenth Year of the Dominion of the Right Honourable Charles, Lord Baron of Baltemore [sic]

Printed and Sold by William Parks, and Edmund Hall, Annapolis 1732 - (11 1/2 x 7 inches). [2], 43pp [i.e. 45] pp. Title with woodcut arms of the colony of Maryland. Interleaved with blanks at a period date. Period manuscript inscription dated 1732 signed by Samuel Ogle. Contemporary sheep, bordered in blind, bound by William Parks. Housed in a black morocco box. Provenance: Sheriff of Somersett County, Maryland (presentation inscription by Ogle dated 1732); Thomas Hayward (d. 1751, period inscriptions and signatures); Capt. Levin Adams (early signature); William Davis Allen (signature dated 1790) A highly important early Maryland imprint, printed and bound by famed colonial printer William Parks, notable for both the printing and binding. William Parks arrived in Maryland in 1725, after an early printing career in Ludlow, Shropshire. He became the fourth printer to work in the colony, although only fifteen imprints from his predecessors actually survive, generally in unique copies. Parks was a well-schooled printer, according to Wroth, who stated "the office of public printer of Maryland assumed a dignity which formerly it had not possessed". Parks quickly developed a newspaper and became official printer of the colony in 1726. As this imprint demonstrates, he also had a bindery. The present work encompasses the laws of the provincial Assembly passed during the session beginning 11 July 1732, comprising thirty acts on subjects ranging from the establishment of towns, duties and regulation on tobacco, rules governing courts, the encouragement of iron works, the prohibition of raising swine and cattle in certain areas, and other local matters. Among the more interesting Acts is one "to prevent cutting up Tobacco Plants destroying of Tobacco and Tobacco Houses," the text of which begins: "Whereas several evil-minded Persons, have of late gone about, in many Places, in great Numbers, and violently cut up the Tobacco plants growing on several Plantations." The crime of willfully burning tobacco was hereby proclaimed to be punishable by death. The binding on the present example is a rare example of a Maryland binding from this very early period and is attributed to Parks, who advertised himself in a 1729 issue of the Maryland Gazette as one "Who binds old Books very well and cheap." This copy inscribed and signed by Samuel Ogle, the Governor of Maryland, sending the laws to the Sheriff of Somerset County and with provenance to the clerk of Somerset County, Thomas Hayward (d. 1751). Wroth records five extant examples (British Library, British Museum, Maryland Historical Society, Maryland State Library and Library of Congress); ESTC adds a copy at the Huntington Library.       NP: Paris?: Prault (?). 1732. Hardcover. Very Good. Published 1732, 6 volumes (bound in six volumes). 8vo, late 18th Century calf, flat spines heavily gilt decorated. First volume with engraved title page, 3 folding engraved plates and folding map of the Chinon region. Very good, light wear to corners, front joint of first volume shows crack but all hinges and boards sturdily attached, contents clean. With a note in old brown ink on the half-title of the first volume indicating that this set came from the library of MADAME DE POMPADOUR: 'Bib. de Mme de Pompadour cabiner [?]' Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764), official chief mistress to Louis XV and an important saloniste, patron of Voltaire, etc., had a a major library of nearly 4,000 titles, a catalog of which was published in 1765. The so-called Duchat edition is listed in that catalog as number 1942, but with the date listed as 1733 and bound in 5 volumes rather than 6. It could be that these were later bound in 6 volumes by its new possessor, and the date might have been misprinted by the publisher of the catalog, but we have no further evidence that this is the set that came from Mme de Pompadour's library other than the browned ink notation.
