Engraved with period outline colour. Printed on thick laid paper. In excellent condition. 20 x 26 3/8 inches. An important early map of south eastern France by the celebrated French cartographer, Guillaume de L'Isle. Guillaume de L'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are also invariably elegant and attractive. This map is from an edition of De L'Isle's Atlas de Geographie, which was reissued posthumously from 1730 to 1774. This was the France that Louis XIV had secured by the time he died in 1715. The Universal Etymological English Dictionary

London,: Thomas Cox, 1731.. Thick octavo, numerous small woodcut illustrations throughout and appendix of proper names bound in; title-page thumbed with old manuscript notations, some water-staining of the preliminaries and appendix, two text leaves chipped at fore-edge margins with slight loss yet good overall in worn early nineteenth-century roan with gilt lettering. Dictionary from the working library of Ludwig Leichhardt, with the rear endpaper inscribed 'L. Leichhardt' in the explorer's distinctive hand. Any relic or manuscript associated with Leichhardt is exceptionally rare: Hordern House has never before been able to offer any Leichhardt manuscript or signature, and they seem most uncommon on the market. As Leichhardt's inscription is undated it is not possible to ascertain whether he brought the dictionary to Australia upon emigrating in 1842 or if it was gifted to him after arrival. Nonetheless, it is particularly appealing to have a book from the library of such an avid reader, not least one which may have been used in Leichhardt's writing. That Leichhardt owned an etymological dictionary comes as no surprise given his considerable scholarly curiosity and his awareness that his journals would be published in English (as is well known the explorer Phillip Parker King helped prepare Leichhardt's journals of his overland expedition to Port Essington for publication).Nathan Bailey (d. 1742) was a pioneer English lexicographer, who first published his dictionary in 1721. Thie revised second edition is an enlivened publication filled with historical and anecdotal information on the history of words. The work is endearing for the numerous woodcut illustrations depicting heraldic devices, architectural details, military defences, mathematical principles, ancient deities and other diverse subjects.

[Empire of China and the Christian culture of the Society of Jesus, taken from the accounts of P. Alvaro Semmedo]

Lisbon: Officina Herreriana, 1731 Book. Very Good. Leather Bound. 2nd Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Lisbon: Officina Herreriana, 1731. Second Spanish Edition. Small Folio. [xix], 252 pp. Period style dark brown gilt tooled full calf with a red gilt morocco label. A few leaves with minor repair to blank margins, otherwise a very good copy. Rare work. Semedo was the Portuguese Procurado General for China. This is a general description of Chinese society which describes the foreign missions and the Manchu campaigns. The manuscript was written by Semedo in Goa in 1638 and contains the first description of tea in a European work on China. "Semedo first arrived in China in 1613, and worked there for the next twenty-four years. During this time he was associated with Johann Adam Schall von Bell, whom he joined at Xian in 1628, and was responsible for the first European translation of the engraved pillar commemorating the arrival of the Nestorian Alopen. Sent back to Europe as procurator in Rome for the China mission, he called at Goa, where in 1638 he completed his Relacao da propagacao de fe no regno da China e outras adjacentes, a valuable account of the conditions in China at the end of the Ming dynasty. The Portuguese original of the work eventually reached the hands of the Portuguese historian, Manuel Faria y Sousa, who edited it into an historical form and had it translated into Spanish"(Howgego S81). "This work gives a long account of China, its various provinces, inhabitants and their manners and customs, Government and Military Art, propagation of the Gospel, and more particularly an account of the labours of the Jesuits there" (Cox. I, p. 323); Cordier Sinica 23-24; "On 29 March 1608, [Semedo] left for Goa and the Far East aboard Na. Sra. Do Vencimento. He arrived to Macau in 1610, and to Nanjing in 1613. Along with another Jesuit, Alfonso Vagnoni, he was imprisoned during an anti-Christian campaign in Nanjing in 1616, and then sent back to Macau, where he stayed till 1621. As the persecution campaign in the mainland China abated, Fr. Semedo changed his Chinese name from Xie Wulu to Zeng Dezhao and re-entered China, now working in Jiangsu and Jiangnan provinces. He spent most of his term in China in the central and southern provinces; perhaps his only trip north was the one he made to Xi'an in 1625, during which he was the first European to see the recently unearthed Nestorian Stele" (Wikipedia)..

Tchemerzine (1977) III, 232b; Linde 107.
Provenance: Stamp of Alfonso Cassuto on title.
Much of the work is devoted to an attempt to combat the perceived atheism of Spinoza’s philosophy. Paul Janet suggests that Bayle’s Dictionary was Fenelon and other French critics’ principle source of information on Spinoza’s work, and that the loss of Spinoza’s subtleties in the reduction was the root of much of the criticism. Poikile Istoria, Varia Historia, cum notis integris Conradi Gesneri, Johannis Schefferi, Tanaquilli Fabri, Joachimi Kuhnii, Jacobi Perizonii, & interpretatione latina Justi Vulteji, innumeris in locis emendata. Curante Abrahamo Gronovio.

Antiporta calcografica sontuosamente figurata. Frontespizi in rosso e in nero. JURISPRUDENTIA PUBLICA IMPERII ROMANO GERMANICI nova et scientifica methodo concimmata in tres tomos distincta et juris publici facta... Adjuncto duplici Indice, quorum primus in principio prospectum operis, alter in fine seriem rerum & verborum....

He also established that plants lose water continuously during transpiration through leaves. His quantitative measurements of these phenomena enabled him to show the rate of transpiration varied with temperature. Hales established that plants do not have true circulation system, and developed techniques of measuring the varying growth rates in different plant structures. The second volume, or Haemastaticks, 'contains the studies on blood pressure which make Hales one of the founders of modern experimental physiology. The application of the principle of the pressure-gauge or manometer enabled him to measure blood pressure during the contraction of the heart. He computed the circulation rate and estimated the velocity of the blood in the veins, arteries and capillary vessels and by showing that the capillary vessels are liable to constriction and dilation he made an important contribution both to the study of physiology and the practice of the physician of today ... Hales' work marked the greatest advance in the physiology of the circulation between Harvey and the introduction of the mercury manometer and other instruments for the measurement of blood pressure by J.L.M. Poiseuille in 1828' (PMM)..

Pierre Joseph Buchoz (1731-1807)Illustrated plate from Les Dons Merveilleux et Diversement Coloriés de la Nature dans Le Règne VègètaleParis, 1779-1783Hand-colored copperplate engravingSheet size: 18 ½? x 11 ¼?Pierre Joseph Buchoz (also spelled Buc'hoz) was a French lawyer, physician, botanist and naturalist and was very interested in the medicinal virtues of various plants. He was also a prolific author of botanical books in the latter half of the 18th century. Born in Metz (France), Buchoz was meant for a career in law, but soon turned to medicine, and was appointed as the physician to King Stanislaus of Poland when he was 28. Accused of not fulfilling his duties, Buchoz quit, and devoted his energies to the study of botany, medicine, economics and mineralogy, eventually publishing over 300 volumes on these subjects. Although he is held in low esteem by the scientific botanists, due to his persistence in re-using plates with different attributions, his decorative and artistic sense places him high in the ranks of eighteenth-century flower book authors.

FAITHFULLY TRANSCRIBED FROM THE DRINKING GLASSES AND WINDOWS IN THE SEVERAL NOTED TAVERNS, INNS, AND OTHER PUBLICK PLACES IN THE NATION. AMONGST WHICH ARE INTERMIXED THE LUCUBRATIONS OF THE POLITE PART OF THE WORLD, WRITTEN UPON WALLS, IN BOG-HOUSES, &C. [bound with:] THE MERRY- THOUGHT ... PART II

London: Printed for J. Roberts in Warwick-Lane ..., [nd. but ca. 1731].. [8],24;[2],28pp. Octavo. 19th century pebbled morocco. Identical engraved frontis to each part, signed "H. Burgh Sculpt." Binding worn at extremities and joints (but sound), internally quite nice, very good or better. Bookplate. First edition of each part. A fascinating collection, in two independent parts, of jests, graffiti and doggerel, represented as collected from public houses, bog houses and store fronts about Britain and Ireland. Some of the examples are barbs aimed at public or private figures, others are coarse or sexual, many relate to the writers' state of drunkenness, and yet others are simply the exercises of amateurs with a thought to express (sometimes while occupied otherwise). Third and fourth parts also appeared, conjecturally dated by ESTC the following year, as did subsequent editions or reissues. All are uncommon, and the first edition of the first part is rare. Case records the first editions of the first and second parts only from notices/adverts in the GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE (October and November 1731) and FOG'S WEEKLY JOURNAL, but did locate copies and collates the later parts and editions. ESTC locates three copies of the first part (Advocates Library, BL and the Bodleian - none in North America), and nine copies of the second (Huntington, McMaster, Princeton and Illinois in North America). CASE 369(I)(a) and 369(2)(b) note. ESTC T141567 and T141568.

THE NEW TESTAMENT OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST TRANSLATED OUT OF THE LATIN VULGAT BY JOHN WICLIF, S.T.P. PREBENDARY OF AUST IN THE COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF WESTBURY, AND RECTOR OF LUTTERWORTH, ABOUT 1378. TO WHICH IS PRÆFIXT A HISTORY OF THE SEVERAL TRANSLATIONS OF THE H. BIBLE AND N. TESTAMENT, &C. INTO ENGLISH, BOTH IN MS AND PRINT, AND OF THE MOST REMARKABLE EDITIONS OF THEM SINCE THE INVENTION OF PRINTING

London: Sold by Thomas Page and William Mount ..., 1731.. [2],iv,[4],108,[2],[3]-156,viiipp. Folio. Old calf, rebacked and recornered in the 20th century to style in brown calf, raised bands, lettered in gilt. Two fine engraved portraits, one folding plate. Three bookplates on front pastedown, modest tanning, some very tiny worm tracks in extreme edges of the portrait of Wycliffe, divisional title and first leaf of text of the NT nearly detached at gutter and a bit creased, light occasional foxing, a few short tears at the fore-edge of the folding plate, otherwise a very good copy. First printing in book form of Wycliffe's translation of the New Testament, accompanied by the extensive prefatory "History..." by John Lewis. At Wycliffe's instigation, a group of scholars prepared this translation into Middle English of the New Testament from the Latin Vulgate in 1380, and though popular, it circulated only in manuscript until this edition. Over two hundred manuscript versions are known, many of them of the revised version prepared by John Purvey. In 1409 the Wycliffe version was condemned as heretical and outlawed in Britain. This edition was published by subscription, and the edition, including some copies on large paper, is reported to have consisted of only 160 copies. An advertisement leaf, a list of subscribers, and a page of errata follow the dedication. The frontis portrait of John Lewis and the portrait of Wycliffe are signed in the plate by G. White, and the engraved folding plate is based on the frontis of the Cranmer Bible. While well represented in institutions, copies of this edition are uncommon in the market place: ABPC records only three appearances since 1999, and only one of them, the Macclesfield copy sold in 2006, was complete with both the portraits, as is this copy. ESTC T95000. DARLOW & MOULE (HERBERT) 1011. MACCLESFIELD SALE vii:2452.
