Bibliotheca Lambertina: seu Catalogus Librorum Bibliothecae Nicolai Lambert

Woodcut arms of Lambert on title. 2 p.l., xii, 376, [32] pp. 8vo, 19th-cent. maroon morocco, double gilt fillet round sides with gilt crowns in each corner, central arms in gilt on each cover of Joaquín Gómez de la Cortina, Marqués de Morante, spine lettered in gilt, many lower edges untrimmed. Paris: G. Martin, 1730. A fascinating copy, heavily annotated throughout in two contemporary hands, of this uncommon sale catalogue of the library of Nicolas Lambert (1666-1729), councillor to the Parlement of Paris and a high government official. This was a fine general library, rich in the best 17th and 18th-century editions of history, geography, and law. One of Martin's scarcest catalogues; 3169 lots with an excellent authors' index at end. This is perhaps the most heavily annotated auction catalogue we have ever encountered. Two hands are at work here. The first has very largely priced the catalogue. The second, smaller hand has filled many of the margins with details of additional items sold not in the printed catalogue, with prices; corrections and additions to the printed lots; and other bibliographical details. Fine copy. With the leather bookplate of Gomez de la Cortina, one of the greatest Spanish bibliophiles of the 19th century, and A.R.A. Hobson. ❧ Bléchet, pp. 82-83. Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 33. Guigard, II, p. 279. Peignot, p. 106. .

De Morbo Gallico, Treatise of the French Disease bound with The Force of the Mother's Imagination upon Her Foetus in Utero

Thomas Warner; John Clarke; J. Walthoe, [et al.], London 1730 - 2 volumes in 1. Hardcover. [12], 110, [2] p.; 192 p. Bound in contemporary Cambridge-style leather. 4 raised bands. Good binding and cover. Wear to extremities. Signature on title page, corner of title pages removed to excise another signature. Pages lightly tanned, with scattered foxing and toning. Surg-Gen. Daniel Turner (1667-1741) was a London surgeon best known for his treatment of venereal disease and other diseases of the skin, later recognized as one of the founders of British dermatological studies, had become engaged in a pamphlet war with James Blondel on maternal powers of imagination shortly after the Mary Toft scandal, in which a women stated she gave birth to rabbits in 1726. Blondel took aim on a new chapter in Turner?s 1726 Third Edition of "De Morbis Cutaneis. A Treatise of Diseases Incident to the Skin." Blundell confuted the plastic power attributed to the imagination of the mother during pregnancy and twelfth chapter of the treatise by Daniel Turner, devoted to maternal fancy as the cause of molae, and the theory in general. This dispute would continue for the next 4 years, with Blundell advocating the ovist and preformationist position (associated with Harvey), in which all parts of the fetus already exist in the egg before conception. Turner and the imaginationists would employ Newtonian ideas and terminology to show that a thoughts and imagination would affect their offspring and such actions, especially birthmarks on children could not be removed. 12 Bl., 613 S., 1 Bl. Mit gestoch. Frontispiz. Gr.-8°. Halbpergamentbd d. Z.

Leipzig, Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf, 1730. – VD18 11394609; Goed. III 361, 38; Faber du Faur 1762 (ohne Frontispiz). Vgl. Jantz 1167 ff (nur spätere Ausgaben). [Attributes: First Edition]

Artist: Homann JB - Doppelmayr JG; Issued in: Nuremberg; date: c 1730 - Artist: Homann, J.B. - Doppelmayr, J.G.; Issued in: Nuremberg; date: c. 1730; - Condition: Very good; Decorative map of the zodiacs of the southern hemisphere constellation, with decorative vignettes of celestial monsters and animals. The tables along the sides identify and describe the constellations on the chart.Homann was born in Oberkammlach near Kammlach in the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch. Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

1730 1ed Drapier Letters by Jonathan Swift Ireland Numismatics Hibernian Patriot

[London] : Printed at Dublin. London: reprinted and sold by A. Moor in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and the Booksellers of London and Westminster, MDCCXXX. [1730] - 1730 1ed Drapier Letters by Jonathan Swift Ireland Numismatics Hibernian Patriot Very Important Irish Economics compare@$2,000 Originally the Drapier’s Letters were issued in pamphlet form, but today virtually unobtainable. This very rare collected edition was published in London, five years after the Dublin first edition published by George Faulkner in 1725. Drapier's Letters is the collective name for a series of seven pamphlets written between 1724 and 1725 by the Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Jonathan Swift, to arouse public opinion in Ireland against the imposition of a privately minted copper coinage that Swift believed to be of inferior quality. William Wood was granted letters patent to mint the coin, and Swift saw the licensing of the patent as corrupt. In response, Swift represented Ireland as constitutionally and financially independent of Britain in the Drapier's Letters. Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. Swift is remembered for works such as Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier's Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity and A Tale of a Tub. He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry We find this same book for sale elsewhere for over $1,905! Berlin, Verlegts Christ. Gottl. Nicolai, 1730-(1721)-1738. 13 parts (bound in 1 volume). Royal-8vo (202 x 165 mm). pp. (6), 40; (4), 45; (6), 39; (8), 45; (6), 51, (5); (12), 34; (10), 31; (8), 42; (8), 38; (8), 25, (5); (8), 34; (8), 44; (10), 35, (5), with 13 printed titles, the first in red and black, 13 charming engraved vignettes and 274 engravings on 40 plates (in a few cases there are 2 plates on one leaf). Contemporary vellum (some skilfull repairs). The first important German treatise on insects' (Miall p. 240). Johann Leonard Frisch (1666-1743) was director of a Berlin gymnasium and author of several dictionaries. He is remembered as the introducer of the mulberry into Prussia. The present work was issued over a period of 18 years describing some 300 different insects. The fine plates were engraved after Frisch's own drawings, some by Philip Jacob his son./'Frisch was a careful and diligent observer, bent not merely upon observing, but upon interpreting the facts of structures and habit. He takes one insect at a time, describes its external features, figures it in all stages, if possible, and tells all that he has been able to discover about its mode of life' (Miall pp. 240-1). It is very rare to find a fine copy of this book, which is mostly found in poor condition, like the present copy. Our copy is somewhat browned and the upper margins at the beginning and end of the book have been grawned by mice, not affecting the text. The first part is a second issue as is often the case with this book, the other parts are in the first issue.//Hagen I, 254; Nissen ZBI, 1436; Miall, L.C., The early naturalists, their lives and work (1580-1789), pp. 240-244).
