Carte de l isle de Saint Dominigue

Artist: Anville d Jean Babtiste (d) ; issued in: Paris; date: (d)1730 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 28,5 x 40,5; - description: Map shows the island Hispaniola with Haiti and the Caicos-, Turcs-and Inagua-islands; - vita of the artist: Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 ?1782), was both a geographer and cartographer who greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography, characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, are especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such; compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked empty. His first serious map, that of Ancient Greece, was published when he was fifteen. At the age of twenty-two, he was appointed one the king's geographers, and began to attract the attention of first authorities. D'Anville's studies embraced everything of geographical nature in the world's literature, as far as he could muster it: for this purpose, he not only searched ancient and modern historians, travelers and narrators of every description, but also poets, orators and philosophers. One of his cherished subjects was to reform geography by putting an end to the blind copying of older maps, by testing the commonly accepted positions of places through a rigorous examination of all the descriptive authority, and by excluding from cartography every name inadequately supported. Vast spaces, which had before

Mappa Geographica totius Insulae et Regni Siciliae cura graphio et impen sis Matth. Seutteri, S.C.M.G. August

1730 - By: Matthias Seutter Date: 1730 (circa) Augsburg Size: 19.75 x 22.75 inches (50.2 cm x 57.8 cm) This bold map of Siciliy by Matthias Seutter is one a series completed by him featuring Italy and the principal islands which are in close proximity to the mainland. Seutter expresses obvious interest in the volcanic activity in these maps, and this one is no exception. Etna is depicted as if ready to erupt, while other volcanoes in the region are also included. Sicily is rendered in high detail, with all topographical features boldly delineated. Natural features are included, as are all inhabited regions. A number of forested areas are included as are routes between cities, most of which are based on roads from antiquity, they circle the island and transverse it. Seutter has included his traditional list of features, in both Latin and French. The list includes cities, chateau, archbishoprics, bishoprics, churches and chapels, a number of abbeys, principalities, duchies and some designation of ranks of the aristocracy. Seutter also had an eye for remains of antiquity, and provides a key for places such as cities in ruins, castles in ruins, and aqueducts in ruins. There also appears to be a healing center dating to antiquity in the region of Castro Giovanne. It is indicated by a small (very possibly sulfurous) lake around which Seutter has included fourteen miniature Rods of Asclepius. He also lists a number of important ports. Below these lists is located the distance legend. The title cartouche contains characters from mythology including Neptune seated at water’s edge with trident on hand. Demeter stands behind him with a basket of fruit, a full to overflowing cornucopia, and some other agricultural products nearby. Dionysus stands opposite her with his staff entwined by a grape vine. Mermen emerging from the sea appear to bring offerings to the gods, and myriad sea-going vessels of various types sail the seas near the island. The lower left quadrant contains an inset map of the islands of Malta and Gozo labeled “Carte Particuliere del Isla de Malte et des Isles Voisines”. Both islands are depicted with their countless castles and other architectural edifices. Condition: This map is in C condition. Tears which enter the map have been repaired with archival material on the verso. Staining (blood?) does not detract from the appearance of the map, rather adds an air of mystery to it.

Cfr. Iccu; Edizioni giuridiche antiche in lingua italiana, II, 1, p. 233..

In the mid-1670s, a French translation appeared of Nicholas Sanders' De origine et progressu schismatio Anglicani libri tres (1585). Sanders attacked the English Reformation which he considered the political act of a corrupt king. Several of Gilbert Burnet's friends wished him to publish a rebuttal of the work so in 1679 the first volume of this work was published, covering the reign of Henry VIII. Vol. II, appearing in 1681, covers the reign of Elizabeth. Vol. III consists of corrections and additional material. Parliament voted thanks for Burnet after the publication of the first volume and, in 1680, Oxford awarded Burnet the degree of doctor of divinity. Burnet's literary reputation was greatly enhanced by this publication which remained the standard reference work in the field for over a century. Catholics, not surprisingly, dispute some of its content.

De rivier de Merwede, ... Including: No. 3. An engraved map of the river Merwede, the main map (53.5 x 124.5) on two sheets at a scale of 1:10,000, together with a separate engraved overview map (22 x 63 cm) with diagrams showing river depth and dike profiles, and tidal and seasonal changes in the water level. Framed (64.5 x 134 & 64.5 x 74 cm).

V.d. Brink, Hollandse rivierkartog. 8; Koeman, Handleiding, p. 103, no. 123. Engraved map commissioned by the Provincial Council of Holland, of the river Merwede by Nicolaas Cruquius, showing the area between Sliedrecht/Hardinxveld to Gorinchem, including parts of the Biesbosch, accompanied by an overview map showing the river though a larger area from Dordrecht to Gorinchem. This map, the most influential river map of its time, demonstrates the high quality of Dutch institutional cartography in the 18th century. It set a standard for Dutch river mapping and, closely related, determined the parameters of the topographical research that should always accompany it. The main purpose of the map was to help find a solution to the frequent flooding in a vast low-lying area along the south river bank called the Biesbosch, problems that had plagued the region chronically since a 15th-century dike breach that was never fully rectified. A fine of an unsurpassed river map and a landmark of Dutch cartography.

Seutter Chalcogr. August. Vindel.

1730 - By: Matthias Seutter Date: 1730 (Published) Augsburg Size: 19.4 x 22.7 inches (49.3 cm x 57.7 cm) This splendid map of Italy by Matthias Seutter affords an interesting perspective of the lines of defense formed by the cities of the major polities of the mid-eighteenth century which are featured on the map. Starting from Mantua, Cremona, Piacenza, Ferrara in the north this striking map features and extends southward to Rome, including Ancona on the Adriatic. Many other well-known cities are featured as well. Each designated polity contains at least one historic city state, or fortified city, and all are connected by a well-delineated system of roads based on ancient well-established routes. Elba and part of Corsica are also featured. Directly under the compass rose in the lower left quadrant is the scale legend and beneath it a list explaining the meanings of the various illustrations employed by Seutter, and includes depictions of Major cities, minor cities, villages, fortifications, archbishoprics, universities and even lone castles in the countryside. The extravagant title cartouche fills the area covered by the Adriatic Sea in the upper right quadrant, and includes a merman and mermaid, with four putti also included.
