Insula Ceilon olim Taprobana.

Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. Bibliografia: Koeman, C&M 7, 91. Dimensioni 585x480. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son and pupil of the cartographer Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers-in-law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed much of its success to his access to French publishers, whose publications he re-issued in handsome editions. The elder Mortier died in 1711; his wife continued the firm until she died in 1719. In 1721, Covens and Mortier formed a partnership, Covens having married Agatha Mortier in the same year. They continued the business by publishing enlarged editions of Sanson, Jaillot, and De L'Isle, as well as some of the later Dutch cartographical masters such as De Wit and Allard, and of course Pierre Mortier. This map is from an edition of De L'Isle entitled, Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. Par Guillaume de l'Isle. Premier Géographe de sa Majesté. It delineates the island in great detail. At the time the map was made, the coastal areas were ruled by the Dutch East Indian Company, who were undoubtedly responsible for the soundings indicated around the island and for mapping the roads depicted. Copper engraving, contemporary colour, in perfect condition. Koeman, C&M 7, 91. Dimensioni 585x480. Dimensioni

Chiaroscuro woodcut, printed in blue tones on black lines, from four blocks. On contemporary laid paper, in very good condition. Engraved by Nicolas Lesueur after a drawing executed by Paolo Farinati, showing Apollo and Phaethon in chariot drawn by four horses. The plate is from the series "Recueil d'estampes d'après les plus beaux tableaux et d'après les plus beaux desseins qui sont en France". Also known as 'Recueil Crozat', is a series of plates commissioned by the collector Pierre Crozat and reproducing famous paintings and drawings of the era; 140 plates were published in 1729. A second volume formed by 42 prints (instead of the 110 plates initially planned) was issued in 1740. After Crozat's death, the plates were sold to a company of booksellers who commissioned Mariette to reorganize the 'Recueil'; Mariette divided the plates into two volumes, added some missing descriptions, and advertised the set to the public in 1742. In 1764, Basan bought the plates and the text, and republished the 'Recueil', but replaced the woodcuts by intaglio prints. Basan also published the 45 plates reproducing the Italian paintings from the collection of the Duc d'Orléans in a volume entitled 'Recueil d'après la gallerie du palais royal' Le Blanc 23 Dimensioni 272 397mm

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Insula Ceylon olim Taprobana. "Carte de l'Isle de Ceylan..

Asia: Amsterdam Covens et Mortier c1741. Copper engraved map of Ceylon, Sri Lanka from Covens & Mortier's " Nieuwe Atlas, Inhoudennde vier Gedeeltens der Waereld.. " Original full wash colour; verso blank. The map after Guillaume de l'Isle shows the island of Sri Lanka, Ceylon, with part of the coast of India, it first appeared in 1730 Black & white [as issued], strap work title cartouche and strap work mile scale. Dark impression; full wash colour; printed on heavy paper; minor paper faults (thinning) to sea, only perceptable when held to light; old red crayon number to verso Covens & Mortier as a firm existed between 1721-1778, taking over the business of Pierrre Mortier. Johannes / Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier were brothers- in- law following the former's marriage to Mortier's sister Agatha in 1721, when they also formally went in to partnership. Under the Covens and Mortier imprint, Cornelius and Jean republished the works of the great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, & De Wit. The firm would become one of the most prolific Dutch publishing concerns of the 18th century. The company would pass down through the Covens family as Mortier had no children, changing the name to Covens & Zoon until Pieter Mortier IV a great grandson of the original founder joined the firm and saw the name restored to Mortier Covens & Zoon. ( See Koeman I p45). Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. The French cartographer Guillaume de l'Isle (1675−1726) was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences when he was 27 years old and subsequently became the first person to receive the title Premier Géographe du Roi (principal geographer to the king). At the time de l'Isle was engaged in cartographic research, the prestige of a cartographer and the authority of his maps were gauged by the veracity of the cartographer's sources, i.e., the explorers and travelers who reported details of their travels to geographers and cartographers in Europe. Many of de l'Isle's maps were reissued by the publishing house of Cornelis Mortier and Johannes Coven in Amsterdam in their Atlas Nouveau, which was published in multiple editions, the earliest of which dates to 1730. I send it FROM ISRAEL EMS, INSURED The Dictionnaire Historique et Critique (English: Historical and Critical Dictionary) is a biographical dictionary written by Pierre Bayle (1647-1706), a Huguenot who lived and published in Holland after fleeing his native France due to religious persecution. The dictionary was first published in 1697 ( two volumes, each with two parts, as four physical books: A-B; C-G; H-O; P-Z), and enlarged in the second edition of 1702 (three volumes: A-D; E-M; N-Z). An English translation was first published in 1709.[1] The overwhelming majority of the entries are devoted to individual people, whether historical or mythical, but some articles treat religious beliefs and philosophies.[2] Many of the more controversial ideas in the book were hidden away in the voluminous footnotes, or they were slipped into articles on seemingly uncontroversial topics. The rigor and skeptical approach used in the Dictionary influenced many thinkers of the Enlightenment, including Denis Diderot and the other Encyclopédistes, David Hume, and George Berkeley. Bayle delighted in pointing out contradictions between theological tenets and the supposedly self-evident dictates of reason. Bayle used the evidence of the irrationality of Christianity to emphasize that the basis of Christianity is faith in God and divine revelation. But at the same time Bayle sought to promote religious tolerance, and argued strongly against inflexible and authoritarian application of religious articles of faith.[3][4] This led to a bitter argument with his fellow French Protestant Pierre Jurieu Pierre Bayle (French: [bɛl]; 18 November 1647 - 28 December 1706)[2] was a French philosopher and writer best known for his seminal work the Historical and Critical Dictionary,[2] published beginning in 1697. Bayle was a Protestant. As a forerunner of the Encyclopedists and an advocate of the principle of the toleration of divergent beliefs, his works subsequently influenced the development of the Enlightenment

Collection of 89 Acts of Parliament Passed During the Reigns of George II and George III.

Charles Eyre and William Strahan, Mark Baskett & Others, 1730s-1770s., London: - Bound volume of 89 acts, folio (11 3/4" x 7"), period full calf, 446 pp. Various paginations actual page count is done by hand, and a manuscript index at the front lists the acts and indicates the page it is on. Binding is worn, backstrip is gone, hinges are cracked (covers almost detached) and some signatures are loose, some early ink notations and page numbering are on top of pages, it appears there are some remnants of wax seals on the margin of the last page, some soiling at endpapers, normal aging and browning, but internally pretty clean; despite the mentioned flaws, the contents are in very good shape, but the binding needs work. While this collection of Acts passed under George II and George III is not sequential, a previous owner has provided a useful index as to the contents and location of various acts. The laws cover a very broad area of issues, from the more mundane, such as, dog stealing, punishments for disorderly houses, and preventing abuses in making bricks and tiles, to more important issues, including the raising and training of the militia, regulating the price of corn, preservation of public highways and the punishment for selling ale and apiarist without a license. Other important acts include regulating places of entertainment, regulating the trials of controverted elections, establishing trade agreements in the East Indies, changing some of the rules passed by Queen Elizabeth on providing relief to the poor, and wildlife preservation. A fascinating glimpse at another time, and issues of the day.
