Robert Furber, London 1730 - A fine example of this celebrated image from Furber's renowned series titled "Twelve Months of Flowers", here with excellent contemporary hand colouring From the first edition of "a celebrated flower catalogue published by Robert Furber, a nurseryman from Kensington, then on the outskirts of London. Twelve Months of Flowers presented almost 400 different flowering species, grouped according to the month in which they flower. Reflecting in style the grand manner of the Baroque period, the flowers are arranged in elaborate bouquets and placed in elegant urns. Next to each flower appears a number, which corresponds to a name in the key printed at the bottom of the plate on either side of a cartouche inscribed with the name of one of the months of the year. Twelve Months was conceived as a flower catalogue, but its commercial function was adroitly veiled and the artistic quality of its illustrations distinguishes it from the more modest pamphlets generally produced by floriculturalists, including Furber himself, in this period. For the work Furber sought the collaboration of Pieter Casteels (1684-1749), an artist from Antwerp who had achieved great renown throughout England for his paintings of birds and flowers, which decorated the walls of many aristocratic homes. Casteels designed the plates, which were then engraved by Henry Fletcher. Dunthorne 113; Great Flower Books (1990) p.95; Henrey II, pp.343-346 & III, 733; Nissen BBI 674; Oak Spring Flora 37. Engraving, coloured by hand, by Henry Fletcher. [Attributes: First Edition]

Le Nouveau Gulliver, ou Voyage de Jean Gulliver, fils du Capitaine Gulliver

Paris: Clouzier & F. Le Breton, 1730. Two volumes, faint waterstains to a few leaves of the second volume, but a really pretty set in contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, double red labels. Gulliver's son. First edition of this sequel to Swift's Gulliver's Travels by the first French translator of the work. The impressive success of Desfontaines' heavily bowdlerised 1727 translation of Swift's famous novel no doubt provided the impetus to this unofficial sequel. The fiction that it was translated from an original English text is exposed in the preface, where its relationship to Gulliver's Travels is said to be akin to that of Fénélon's Aventures de Telemaque with the Odyssey. As Gove comments, this is one of the very few works to use Gulliver as a model for imitation (unlike the endless array of Robinsonades after Defoe) and thus occupies an important position in the history of Swift's novel. Here, Gulliver's son Jean travels to four lands. He is at his most spirited describing the Island of Babilary in which women are superior, but the other lands have some of the inventiveness, if not the venom, of Swift: the hunch-backed Crump-backs who regard their own form as the ideal, or the Letalispons, who 'live to be 120 yet always look attractive because they begin a second innings at 60' (Dunmore). The work quickly went through many editions, including translation into English as early as 1731.

Amsterdam, die Weltberühmte Haupt- und Handel Statt.

Seutter Augsburg ca 1730 - Double-page engraved plan (49.5 x 58cm) with full contemporary body wash colour. Framed dimensions: 63 x 71cm. A bright and detailed plan of Amsterdam, in full contemporary colour with a panoramic view of the harbour. The plan presents Amsterdam as the leading global merchantile city in Europe, highlighting her extensive canal systems, and using an extensive key to detail the city's principal buildings. Amsterdam's position as an important trading city is emphasised by the many ships anchored in the harbour in the fine prospect of the city and by the allegorical figures in the bottom corners. Seutter (1647-1756) was one of the most important and prolific German map publishers of the 18th century. He was apprenticed in Nuremberg to Johann Bapist Homann, the leading German cartographic publisher of the period. Having finished his training he left to establish his own independent cartographic publishing house in Augsburg. By 1732 Seutter was one of the most celebrated publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI with the title of "Imperial Geographer".         Wien.Die Welt berühmte kayserl. Resid. Stadt.

Seutter Augsburg ca 1730 - Double-page engraved plan (49 x 58 cm) with full contemporary body wash colour. Framed dimensions: 63 x 71cm. Very small hole on the top right border of the illustration and small paper defects under the hinge, but otherwise a strong impression in fresh original colours. Bright and decorative map of Vienna, in full contemporary colour with a panoramic view of the city. Bird's-eye plan of Vienna and its adjoining suburbs, a city famed as the residence of the Habsburg dynasty and capital of the Holy Roman Empire. It contains a detailed key highlighting imperial, civic and religious buildings. The plan is surrounded by ornate decoration including a title cartouche, held aloft by a goddess and mounted by the imperial eagle, and a panoramic prospect of the city 'as it would be seen at midnight'. This prospect is rich in allegorical detail- the left hand side depicts an angelic figure striking down Ottoman invaders who have threatened a figure emblematic of the Danube river. Meanwhile, the right shows a figure emblematic of the city presenting the arms of Vienna underneath a floating figure laden with fruit, suggesting the city's agricultural prosperity. This example is an early state without the printer's privilege. Seutter (1647-1756) was one of the most important and prolific German map publishers of the 18th century.         Colonia Agrippina. Cölln.

Seutter Augsburg ca 1730 - Double-page engraved plan (49x56.5 cm) with full contemporary body wash colour. Framed dimensions: 63 x 71cm. A bright and detailed plan of Cologne, in full contemporary colour with a panoramic view of the city from across the river rhein. Seutter's plan emphasises the city's status as a major harbour and flourishing trading city, demonstrated by the many ships entering and exiting the city and the shipbuilding site in the plan's vignette. It also highlights Cologne's security thanks to its strong city walls and towers, in contrast to the area of Deutz across the river, which lacks fortifications. As well as the city's major ports, the plan's key primarily notes the city's important churches. Cologne was considered a 'daughter of Rome' due to its position as a sovereign state within the Holy Roman Empire. The most important of Cologne's 'magnificent 365 churches' are marked, including the Church of Saint Ursula, the site upon which the 11,000 virgins associated with Saint Ursula are said to be buried. &c. &c

Don Luis le Maingre ?, Rotterdam 1730 - Duodecimo, with both errata leaves; an excellent copy in contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands, crimson morocco label. First edition and very rare. Although rarely commented on, this work concludes with the hypothesis that Hercules discovered the golden apples in continental America. Although the bulk of the work is a zesty farce with an exotic cast of courtiers, pirates, and a Turkish eunuch, its great interest lies in the extensive notes on the figure of Hercules, which include a concluding account of the so-called Monde par Hercule. In the classical account of Hercules' twelve labours, he is commanded to retrieve the golden apples from the garden of Hesperides, which lies far to the north of Europe. This story is denounced by Boucicault as a transparent fiction: Hercules, far from doing a deal with the father of the Hesperides Atlas, in fact found them himself, whilst visiting America. The story is that, having sailed through the straits of Gibraltar, Hercules was caught in a fierce storm, and blown towards the east, discovering a vast and fertile country in the uncharted seas. Although Boucicault hints darkly that the Greeks had their own reasons for maintaining this deception, he concludes 'l'Enigme s'est enfin dévelopée, après que Christofe Colomb, l'Alcide des Espagnes, ût fait en 1492 la Découverte de ce Nouveau-Monde'. The work was known to Barbier only from the later 1738 edition. Some ten copies of this 1730 edition are listed on Worldcat, but there are very few sales records in recent decades.       London. [1712] c1730 - 2 sheets joined. Size: 615 x 1020 mm. Some skilful paper restoration to map folds and to worm holes. Very good condition. Copperplate engraving with original outline colour. Herman Moll produced a wonderfully detailed and informative map of the German Empire, highlighting among other things; the route taken, and the battles fought by John Churchill, during his battles and campaigns during the Spanish War of Succession in 1704. Moll dedicates this fine map to him. 'To his Grace Duke of Marlborough, Prince of Mindelheim &c.' Moll features a flattering cartouche depicting him astride his horse crushing his military adversaries beneath him. The top right corner features a large cartouche of 'The General Diet of the Empire or its Parliament, with the order of its different Colleges'. It shows a gathering of princes of the empire, ecclesiastical figures of the empire sitting opposite each other together with and the assorted electors of Germany seated in the background. In the foreground sits a gathering of all the deputies of the towns of The Rhine and of Swabia.

De Groenlandse vissery, of walvis vangst.

(No pl., Schenk, ca. 1730).4to. Later half calf with marbled boards. A series of 16 engravings on 8 leaves (18,5 x 12,5 cm).* 'The following set of sixteen is among the classics of whaling prints. The exceptional comprehensiveness, historical accuracy, maritime detail, and artistry are rare in the history of the pictorial documentation of the industry. Their publication history is rather confusing, however, because of a lack of precise information on the three generations of Petrus Schenck publishers. It is believed that Sieuwert van der Meulen made the original drawings for the set around 1720, just after the Dutch entered Davis Strait, opening new whaling grounds and bringing renewed vitality, prosperity, and interest to the industry. In 1721, the Dutch sent 258 whaleships to the arctic. .. Whatever its publishing history, the set's popularity must have been somewhat exceptional, for it appears in innummerable variations, copies, and extractions' (Ingalls, Whaling prints in the Francis B. Lathrop Collection, p. 9). The sixteen scenes show different stages of whale fishery with Dutch text and are unsigned.- Fine impressions of the plates.Ingalls 15-30; Brewington 72-87.

A New & Exact Map of the Coasts, Countries and Islands within the Limits of The South Sea Company.

London. c1730 - Size: 675 x 510 mm. Some skilful paper restoration to map folds and to worm holes and to some margins. Fair to good condition. 2 sheets joined. Copperplate map with original outline colour. A truly fascinating and unique historical map depicting the infamous eighteenth century phenomenon known as the 'South Sea Bubble'. Moll highlights his map with a series of inset plans and miniature maps together with the prevailing trade winds of the region. The map extant is from southern California (still shown as an island) the area bordering the Gulf of Mexico, Central America and all of South America. The South Sea Bubble had its origins with the South Sea Company, a company set up (1711) as a British joint stock company, trading in South American commodities. The company was granted a monopoly to trade in Spain's South American colonies; a condition imposed on Spain as part of the peace treaty arising out of the War of Spanish Succession in 1704. The company, in return for the trading monopoly, had to assume the English government's Spanish war debts, which approximated to about £10m - a colossal sum in those days. By 1720, continued speculation in the companies activities had led the stock to rise dramatically from £100 per share to £1000 per share, before falling suddenly and rapidly back to £100 per share, thereby leading to the ruination and bankruptcy of many stockholders, and the extreme discomfort of some banks. The 'bubble' had well and truly burst!

Biblia, Das Ist; Die Ganze Heilige Schrift Alten Und Neuen Testaments Von Herren D. Martin Luther

Peter Conrad Monath, Nuremberg 1730 - 17, 1120, 320. Very rare. Only two recorded copies of the Morl edition (Erlangen, Nuremberg); none on OCLC. Second corrected edition. Introduction by Gustav Philipp Morl (1673-1750), Doring notes in The Learned Theologians of Germany in the 18th and 19th Centuries was important both for his studies in Descartes as well as Confessional Theology. In the four page introduction he notes that Nuremberg is fortunate in this time. There is a pastedown of showing Jesus examining the 10 Commandments (though the fifth apparently is missing from the tables) and below is a panorama of the city. The other endpaper has a full page of Professor Morl (the same as in the NYPL digital collection of famous personages). The following preliminaries list the entire Augsburg Confession (it was the 200 anniversary of its first appearance). A very nice copy in original full leather binding with only a small 1/2" tear at bottom of spine. Both title pages of Old and New Testament are present. The Apocrypha is included as a continuation of the Old Testament. Octavo
