A Rotterdam, M D CC XXX., (1730), - in-8vo, 4 ff. (titre - personnages - l?idée du sujet + 1 f. blanche) + 274 p. + 4 ff. (2 ff. d'errata: fautes a corr. - autres fautes + 2 ff. blanches), reliure pleine veau, dos richement orné or, coins touchés, pages de gardes d?origine, tranches rouges. Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl.         Autograph Letter Signed Portsmouth, July 10, 1789 to John Langdon, New York City

folio, two pages of a four page bi-folium, some splits along folds, remains of sealing wax on integral address leaf, docketed "Jo Whipples Letter." In very good, clean and legible condition.Joseph Whipple, collector of customs at Portsmouth, (brother of General William Whipple 1730 - 1785 revolutionary War General and Signer from New Hampshire) writes to John Langdon (1741 - 1819) Senator and first President pro-tem of the Senate, thanking Langdon for his help and influence in obtaining a post in the new government and comments upon the recent establishment of the Federal court and judicial system. Langdon, a Portsmouth native, was the right person to ask as he was also a friend of the President, George Washington. "Dear SirI have the Honour this moment to receive your favour of the 5th & am much obliged by your kind assurances of attention to my business and also for having seasonably lodged my name with the President - I should have wrote now to him agreeably to your intimation but am discouraged from the consideration of his having no personal knowledge of me and that it might on that account appear and interested application which might operate to my disadvantage - and I conceive also that your influence with the President on which I have rested my expectation is such as I need wish no other. - But if you conceive that it would be of use to hand my name with your recommendation to Mr. Vice President, to Mr. Morris, Mr. R H Lee, Mr. Dalton, your Colleagues or others as you may think proper, I should consider myself further & greatly obliged - but I think your interest requires no aid - as it will of course be represented by you that I am in the office of Colltr. - To some of the names that I have mentioned I am known - others of them were formerly either officially connected or intimately acquainted with my Brother on which account I should have applyd to them for their influence - I imagine also that all appointments will be completed tin a few days if not by this. - You will hear that the Judiciary bill is not relishd this way, I have not seen it, but think that the plan of one Judge to the District Court would be an objectionable one to most people in the Northern states - and the joining the Prov of Maine to N. H. districts no less so to N. H. - However the Acts may be finishd I hope & trust they will terminate in a system that will insure Peace and a happy Government.."John Langdon (brother of Woodbury Langdon) was a merchant, Delegate and Senator from New Hampshire. He was active and prominent supporter of the revolutionary movement, member of the Continental Congress 1775-76, participated in the Battle of Bennington and commanded a company at Saratoga and in Rhode Island. Member of the State senate 1784, President of New Hampshire, 1785, 1788; again a member of the Continental Congress 1787, delegate to the Federal Constitutional Convention in 1787; member of the state ratifying convention elected to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1789 until March 3, 1801. He was elected the first President pro tempore of the Senate on April 6, 1789, in order that the Senate might organize to count the electoral vote for President and Vice President of the United States.American National Biography, vol. 13, pp.138-139Dictionary of American Biography, vol. 5, pt. 2, pp., 587-588

Traduit d'un manuscrit anglois, par monsieur L.D.F. 2 volumes bound in one, small octavo (98 x 160 mm). Contemporary brown calf, dark green and brown morocco labels, raised bands, compartments elaborately decorated in gilt with central floral tools, all edges red, marbled endpapers. Complete with the half-titles. Gathering of signature e in first volume misbound in the wrong order but complete. Hand-coloured woodcut head- and tailpieces and historiated capitals. Late 19th or early 20th-century ownership stamp to front free endpaper verso. Some insect damage to boards and spine, front joint cracked but still holding firm. Gathering of signature e in first volume misbound in the wrong order but complete; a good copy. First edition of Desfontaines's imitation of Gulliver's Travels, preceding the Amsterdam edition of the same year. Pierre Desfontaines's unauthorised sequel followed on the success of his translation of Gulliver's Travels (published in 1727, the first Paris edition of Swift's work). The Nouveau Gulliver's title pages' spuriously claim that it was "traduit d'un manuscrit anglois". However, the preface states that Le Nouveau Gulliver is not a continuation of Swift's Gulliver, "ce n'est ni le même Voïageur, ni le même genre d'avantures, ni le même goût d'allegorie. Ironically enough Le Nouveau Gulliver was translated into English by J. Lockman the following year, as The Travels of Mr. John Gulliver, Son to Capt. Lemuel Gulliver.

Although the book is a work on entomology, the depicted insects are unidentified. However, each plate features a number of moths, butterflies, flies and their associated larvae and caterpillars. The colouring of the plate is modern. Bibliographical reference: *Nissen, BBI, 1342; *Landwehr, Col.pl., 136.Artists and Engravers: Maria Sibylla Merian (Frankfurt, 1647-Amsterdam, 1717) was a naturalist and scientist who studied plants and insects. She also made detailed paintings of the subjects she studied. Her biological father was the engraver and publisher Matthaus Merian, and when he died, Merian's mother married Jacob Marrel. It was Marrel who encouraged young Maria Sibylla to start painting, and at the age of 13 she had painted her first insects and plants. Her study of insects, and especially the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly, was much celebrated in high society. It contested the notion that insects were "born from mud" in spontaneous generation. Merian studied specimens (partly in her own captivity), and described the life cycles of 186 insect species. Although she was correct in her notion of caterpillar metamorphosis, and several scientists in her time already adhered to this idea, the contemporary scientific language was still Latin. So, although her work was widely read and praised by the gentry as it was written in the vernacular, scientists took little notice of Merian's hard work. She wrote a similar work on the insects of Surinam during her stay there, from 1699 to 1701. Shortly before her death, Tsar Peter the Great saw (and greatly admired) her work in Amsterdam. This resulted in the acquisition of a number of Merian's works into the collections of the Tsar. Merian's works are admired and collected until today for their artistic merit. Especially since the end of the 20th century interest in her work has been revived. Condition: Very good considering age. Some general age-related toning and occasional light staining or foxing, please study scan carefully. Storage location: C19-01 The overall size is ca. 6.7 x 8.3 inch. The play was nevertheless a modest success, running for nine nights and sporadic revivals thereafter: "Fielding's career as dramatist had begun in earnest" (ibid).         The Hibernian Patriot: Being a Collection of the Drapier's Letters to the People of Ireland, Concerning Mr. Wood's Brass Half-Pence

[London] Printed at Dublin. London Reprinted: A. Moor [i.e. William Bowyer], 1730. First London edition. [viii], 264 pp. 8vo. Contemporary Cambridge calf. Lacking spine label, rubbed, front cover detached, rear joint cracked. First London edition. [viii], 264 pp. 8vo. First London Edition of the Drapier Letters. The first London edition of Swift's pseudonymous letters, first issued separately in 1724, then collected first by the Dublin edition of 1725 under the title Fraud Detected. In 1722, the English Parliament granted to one William Wood, mine-owner and iron-monger, the right to coin the extravagant sum of £100,000 in copper half-pence. Swift was outraged at what he perceived not only as a swindle to advance the interests of a particular moneyed class, but also as one more example of the monstrous tyranny exercised by England over the Irish. In the persona of a humble shopkeeper, Swift attacked the proposal on several sound economic grounds and pushed his conclusions to their logical and absurd consequences. Having calculated the real (as opposed to the nominal) value of Wood's half-pence, and taking it for granted that bad money drives out good, Swift concludes hilariously that a lady going out shopping will need to be "followed by a Car loaded with Mr. Wood's money," and that a banker will need twelve hundred horse to carry the cash he needs in his bank. But there is also a thunderously Swiftian appeal to freedom: "Were not the people of Ireland born as free as those of England? How have they foreited their Freedom? Is not their Parliament as fair a Representative of the People, as that of England? And hath not their Privy Council as great or a greater share in the Administration of publick Affairs? Are they not subjects of the same King? Does not the same Sun shine over them? And have they not the same God for their Protector? Am I a Free-Man in England, and do I become a Slave in six hours by crossing the Channel?" Swift's "Drapier" urges a boycott of Wood's coins upon his countrymen: "If a Madman should come to my Shop with a Handful of Dirt raked out of the Kennel, and offer it in payment for Ten Yards of Stuff, I would Pity or Laugh at him, or, if his Behaviour deserved it, kick him out of my Doors. And if Mr. Wood comes to demand any Gold or Silver, or Commodities for which I have payed my Gold and Silver, in Exchange for his Trash, can he deserve or expect better treatment?" Swift's publication fanned the flames of controversy both in Ireland and England; and his victory was complete when by the end of August 1725, Wood's grant was withdrawn. "Precisely to what extent Swift had been instrumental in bringing it about can never be assessed. It is certain that he had many able helpers, as it is clear that the populace gave him pre-eminence, so that for the rest of his life he was the people's idol..." The Coffee-House Politician; or, the Justice Caught in His Own Trap. A Comedy, as it is Acted at the Theatre Royal in Lincoln's Inn-Fields

London: J. Watts, 1730. First edition, third issue, first state. [viii], 78 pp. 8vo. Disbound. Gatherings sprung, stab holes. In custom gray card folder. First edition, third issue, first state. [viii], 78 pp. 8vo. The third issue of Fielding's fifth play, Rape Upon Rape, a re-issue of the first edition sheets with a cancel title and preliminaries. "This is the new title given to Rape upon Rape when revived in the winter of 1730 … It was withdrawn after four performances and never staged again" (Battestin, Fielding Companion, p. 179). Rape upon Rape was inspired by the scandal of Colonel Francis Charteris, who received a royal pardon after raping his maid. The events earned Charteris the moniker "Rape-Master General of Great Britain." The play was first performed at the Hay-Market to only modest success and was revived the following season under the title The Coffee-House Politician (though the running titles retain the original title). The first edition is one of Fielding's rarer plays. Masengil, in "Variant Forms of Fielding's "Coffee-House Politician" (SB 5, pp. 178-183) identifies three issues of the play, the first under the title Rape upon Rape, and the second and third issues with the new title. They can be distinguished by certain typographical differences, the most apparent being the number of hyphens between Coffee and House in the title (one in the second issue, two in the third). In addition, the third issue exists in two states, distinguished by the cast list on A4v. Cross III, p. 291-2; Masengil, "Variant Forms of Fielding's "Coffee-House Politician," Studies in Bibliography 5, pp. 178-183

Cfr. Iccu; Edizioni giuridiche antiche in lingua italiana, II, 1, p. 233. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
