The play was nevertheless a modest success, running for nine nights and sporadic revivals thereafter: "Fielding's career as dramatist had begun in earnest" (ibid).         The Hibernian Patriot: Being a Collection of the Drapier's Letters to the People of Ireland, Concerning Mr. Wood's Brass Half-Pence

[London] Printed at Dublin. London Reprinted: A. Moor [i.e. William Bowyer], 1730. First London edition. [viii], 264 pp. 8vo. Contemporary Cambridge calf. Lacking spine label, rubbed, front cover detached, rear joint cracked. First London edition. [viii], 264 pp. 8vo. First London Edition of the Drapier Letters. The first London edition of Swift's pseudonymous letters, first issued separately in 1724, then collected first by the Dublin edition of 1725 under the title Fraud Detected. In 1722, the English Parliament granted to one William Wood, mine-owner and iron-monger, the right to coin the extravagant sum of £100,000 in copper half-pence. Swift was outraged at what he perceived not only as a swindle to advance the interests of a particular moneyed class, but also as one more example of the monstrous tyranny exercised by England over the Irish. In the persona of a humble shopkeeper, Swift attacked the proposal on several sound economic grounds and pushed his conclusions to their logical and absurd consequences. Having calculated the real (as opposed to the nominal) value of Wood's half-pence, and taking it for granted that bad money drives out good, Swift concludes hilariously that a lady going out shopping will need to be "followed by a Car loaded with Mr. Wood's money," and that a banker will need twelve hundred horse to carry the cash he needs in his bank. But there is also a thunderously Swiftian appeal to freedom: "Were not the people of Ireland born as free as those of England? How have they foreited their Freedom? Is not their Parliament as fair a Representative of the People, as that of England? And hath not their Privy Council as great or a greater share in the Administration of publick Affairs? Are they not subjects of the same King? Does not the same Sun shine over them? And have they not the same God for their Protector? Am I a Free-Man in England, and do I become a Slave in six hours by crossing the Channel?" Swift's "Drapier" urges a boycott of Wood's coins upon his countrymen: "If a Madman should come to my Shop with a Handful of Dirt raked out of the Kennel, and offer it in payment for Ten Yards of Stuff, I would Pity or Laugh at him, or, if his Behaviour deserved it, kick him out of my Doors. And if Mr. Wood comes to demand any Gold or Silver, or Commodities for which I have payed my Gold and Silver, in Exchange for his Trash, can he deserve or expect better treatment?" Swift's publication fanned the flames of controversy both in Ireland and England; and his victory was complete when by the end of August 1725, Wood's grant was withdrawn. "Precisely to what extent Swift had been instrumental in bringing it about can never be assessed. It is certain that he had many able helpers, as it is clear that the populace gave him pre-eminence, so that for the rest of his life he was the people's idol..." (Dobrée, English Literature in the Early Nineteenth Century 1700-1740, p. 439). Goldsmiths' 6798; Kress 3901; Rothschild 2095; Teerink 22

The Coffee-House Politician; or, the Justice Caught in His Own Trap. A Comedy, as it is Acted at the Theatre Royal in Lincoln's Inn-Fields

London: J. Watts, 1730. First edition, third issue, first state. [viii], 78 pp. 8vo. Disbound. Gatherings sprung, stab holes. In custom gray card folder. First edition, third issue, first state. [viii], 78 pp. 8vo. The third issue of Fielding's fifth play, Rape Upon Rape, a re-issue of the first edition sheets with a cancel title and preliminaries. "This is the new title given to Rape upon Rape when revived in the winter of 1730 … It was withdrawn after four performances and never staged again" (Battestin, Fielding Companion, p. 179). Rape upon Rape was inspired by the scandal of Colonel Francis Charteris, who received a royal pardon after raping his maid. The events earned Charteris the moniker "Rape-Master General of Great Britain." The play was first performed at the Hay-Market to only modest success and was revived the following season under the title The Coffee-House Politician (though the running titles retain the original title). The first edition is one of Fielding's rarer plays. Masengil, in "Variant Forms of Fielding's "Coffee-House Politician" (SB 5, pp. 178-183) identifies three issues of the play, the first under the title Rape upon Rape, and the second and third issues with the new title. They can be distinguished by certain typographical differences, the most apparent being the number of hyphens between Coffee and House in the title (one in the second issue, two in the third).

The seasons. By Mr. Thomson [Subscribers Edition]

London: [none given], Printed in the Year M.DCC.XXX [1730]. Thomson's masterpiece, and perhaps the most popular English-language poem in blank verse (running to some 5500 lines in its final form) from Milton to the Romantics, as well as "one of the earliest, longest, and finest nature poems in the English language." (Literary Encyclopedia) Large 4to: [8],250,[4, half title and Argument for Spring, final page of subscribers list, and errata misbound],251-252,16,8pp, with title page in red and black with engraved vignette, five full-page allegorical plates by William Kent (one for each season and one for the valedictory to Newton),and head- and tail-pieces and historiated initials by Samuel Richardson. Contemporary full speckled English calf, flat spine in seven compartments divided by gilt rolls, red morocco lettering piece gilt, board edges gilt-tooled, armorial engraved bookplate of James Grove Wood, Castle Grove, on front paste down. Wood (1803-1891) lived at Castle Grove, Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. An excellent wide-margined copy; joints, caps and corners very skillfully restored; pages generally clean and bright (final four leaves lightly toned; unobtrusive marginal worm track, far from text, through Spring). Foxon T237. Rothschild 2423 for first collected edition). Lowndes 2671. ESTC Citation No. T141597. Three quarto editions (ESTC Nos. T153055, T141596, and T141597) were published in London in 1730; ours is the most complete. It is a reissue of the First Collected Edition (which includes the first appearance of both "Autumn" and "A Poem Sacred to the Memory of Sir Isaac Newton"), with the addition of "Britannia" (2nd. ed. corrected) and "A paraphrase on the latter part of the sixth chapter of St. Matthew," both with separate pagination and register ("Britannia" also has a separate title page). Not to be confused with any of the three smaller, non-subscription octavo editions , also published in 1730. Thomson treats each season in succession, describing changes in the weather and landscape of the Scottish border country (where he was born) and its inhabitants, human and otherwise, occasionally ranging as far afield as Africa, Surinam, the Arctic, Lapland, and Russia. Each poem devotes particular attention to rivers, rural pastimes and industries, as well as to assorted insects, birds, and beasts. "Winter" was first published in a brief version, in 1726. By 1727, Thomson was composing "Summer," followed by "Spring" (1728), and finally "Autumn," in 1730, the year all four appeared together in this collected edition. According to Lowndes, "about 360 copies were subscribed for at £1.1s." The list of subscribers includes many members of the landed gentry as well as the poets Alexander Pope (3 copies) and Richard Savage, the Scottish artist Alan Ramsay, and the antiquarian Horace Walpole.         London.

Georg. Balthasar Probst Augsburg c. 1730 - Hand-coloured engraved birds' eye view on two sheets, joined, key in German and English, one or two very small rust holes, otherwise very good. Dimensions: 390 × 1125 mm (15.75 × 44.25 inches). A beautiful large, coloured panorama of 'post fire' London by Friedrich Bernhard Werner, a German printmaker and a skilled draftsman - who specialized in panoramic views of towns in Europe in this format. From left to right, it graphically depicts all the major houses, buildings and churches from Somerset House to the Tower of London, with St.Paul's Cathedral dominating the skyline. London Bridge is seen resplendent with houses along its entire length (the houses were finally cleared in 1756). A key below the panorama is in English, German and Latin, and lists 70 of the most important sites and buildings and landmarks - including some 40 churches. The Thames is extremelly busy with numerous sailing and maritime craft. Above the map is the title on a ribbon banner, flanked by the Royal Arms, and those of The City. During his working lifetime, Werner worked for a number of well known German publishers - including Probst family. The city of Augsburg was a major European publishing centre during 17th and 18th centuries.

Imperatorum Romanorum numismata a Pompejo Magno ad Heraclium ab Adolfo Occone olim congesta; Augustorum iconibus, perpetuis historico-chronologicis notis, pluribusque additamentis jam illustrata a Francisco Mediobarbo Birargo; nunc vero ab innumeris.

ex aedibus Societatis Palatinae, Mediolani 1730 - [26], 624 p., Latin text, 1 leaf of plates, frontispiece and engraved dedication, title printed in red and black with a fine medallion engraving; superbly engraved oval portrait plate of Mediobarbi; woodcut initials; 235 very fine engravings of Roman portrait coins in the text, opening leaves a bit tattered; barring occasional spotting, bulk of text is rather near fine, cover repaired with later vellum spine & new endpapers. This 1730 issue, expanded by Filippo Argelati, is the best edition of Occo’s landmark work. Adolph Occo (1524–1606), was a German doctor and humanist from Augsburg whose work in the field of Roman numismatics is acknowledged as a major factor in the early development of numismatics as a science. Imperatorum romanorum numismata is particularly important as it abandons the grouping of Roman coins by metal and adopts, instead, a chronological classification. Cunnally observes that Occo’s Numismata served as a model for the great nineteenth-century catalogues of Roman imperial coins written by Theodore-Edme Mionnet and Henry Cohen, "a lineage that culminates in the Roman Imperial Coinage begun by Mattingly and Sydenham in 1923." While paying tribute to his numismatic prowess, Babelon observes that "the eccentric doctor Adolphus Occo of Augsburg (1524-1606)" was an advocate of the use of rhubarb, who declared that his conscience would not permit him to accept the change to the Gregorian calendar." Babelon 78-79. Bassoli 17 & 63. Brunet 29825: "Bonne édition." Hennin 186. Lipsius 253 & 292. Renauldin 64-71. Strandberg 118. Size: Folio [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

O.H.R., 1042-1.
