Sweet William’s Farewell to Black-eyed Susan

1730 - Paul Fourdrinier after a painting by Peter Monamy (1681-1749); Sweet William’s Farewell to Black-eyed Susan; London: circa 1730 - 1743; Hand-colored engraving; 19 ½" x 22 ½" framed Peter Monamy was an English marine painter born and active in London. He began his artistic career as a decorative painter with the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainer’s, a London painter’s guild, in 1703 following a seven year apprenticeship under the house-painter William Clarke. Monamy developed a natural interest in painting marine and naval scenes. It was probably through his friend the artist William Hogarth that Monamy was commissioned to create at least four paintings for the Vauxhall Gardens, a resort in London, which illustrated John Gay’s patriotic naval ballad Sweet William’s Farewell to Black Eyed Susan. The paintings are now lost, but known from the engravings of the paintings by Paul Fourdrinier. This engraving shows verses 4 and 8 of the ballad.

Manuscript Document, signed ("A. Hamilton"), being a stipulation in a legal case "in the Common Pleas of Philad."

Philadelphia, september, 1730 - "In the Common Pleas at Philad. September 1730, Sarah Griscom v Richard Crookshank - by consent of parties the matter in controversy is referred to Thomas Bourne, Peter Bayntun and James Mackey or any two of them who are to audit and make report of their doings to the next court." Hamilton (1676-1741) was a colonial lawyer who settled in Philadelphia sometime around 1715. In 1717, he was appointed attorney general of Pennsylvania; in 1720 he became a member of the provincial council. Hamilton spent 1724 and 1725 in England on business for the proprietors, and he played an important role negotiations that ultimately led to the settlement of the boundary dispute with Maryland. He returned to Philadelphia in 1726, at which point he became increasingly involved in public affairs. In 1727 he was appointed master of the rolls, recorder of Philadelphia, and prothonotary of the supreme court. In October of that same year he was elected to the assembly, representing Bucks County, and two years later he was elected Speaker of the assembly, an office he held until his retirement in 1739 except for the year 1733, when he was not a member. "Hamilton's independence and integrity won him the confidence of all factions in the assembly. On one occasion at least he was elected to the Speakership unanimously. Most of the measures passed during his Speakership dealt with fiscal and administrative matters, with one notable exception. In 1730 the assembly passed a law for the relief of insolvent debtors, a sensible and progressive measure that became a model for similar legislation in other colonies. Prior to 1729 the assembly had no regular meeting place, and Hamilton played a leading role in providing it with its own building. He not only purchased the land but designed and personally supervised the construction of the building later known as Independence Hall - The loss of court records makes an objective analysis of Hamilton's legal career impossible, but to his contemporaries he was a towering eminence, the most formidable trial attorney of his time. His defense of Zenger did not change the law of seditious libel or free the colonial press from the threat of prosecution, but it did have a powerful effect on the political consciousness of Americans" - ANB Hamilton will forever be remembered, however, as the lawyer who successfully defended John Peter Zenger against all odds, in the most important freedom of the press trial in colonial America. His victory is the origin of the slogan "Get a Philadelphia lawyer." His autographs are rare 3-3/4 x 8 inches. 8 lines in ink. Trimmed from a larger document, dampstained. In white linen chemise

The Method of Fluxions both Direct and Inverse. The former being a translation from the celebrated Marquis de L’Hospital’s Analyse des infinements [sic] petits: and the latter supply’d by the translator.

Printed for William Innys 1730 - FIRST EDITION of this translation, with 15 folding engraved plates, repair to marginal tear in last leaf of the preliminaries, and this leaf also with a splash mark and a small hole resulting in the loss of the page numeral, title-page a bit stained just at the edges, a little minor staining elsewhere, pp. xix, iv, 238, [i], 212, [2], 8vo, contemporary calf, double gilt fillets on sides enclosing a roll tooled border in blind, rebacked and re-rebacked somewhat crudely, corners worn, ownership inscription of William Gartland of Dublin on title, and various notes by him (see below), sound Not a rare book in terms of library holdings (not super-abundant either), but extremely scarce in commerce: there was no copy in the Macclesfield Library, and there has not been a copy at auction since at least 1975.‘The rift between British and Continental mathematicians during the eighteenth century was not sufficiently wide to prevent Stone in 1730 from publishing an English translation of L'Hospital's Analyse des infiniment petits, ten years before Buffon reciprocally prepared a French translation of Newton's Method of Fluxions The translator opens with praise of the author's work, "the Character whereof is so well establish'd", but adds that out of regard to Sir Isaac Newton he has altered some of the language and notation of the original to conform to the Newtonian. Increments or differentials, for example, are taken as fluxions, inasmuch as they are proportional to the latter; and [Newton's dot notation is used instead of Leibnizian differentials] ‘Stone's translation, in part I, does not depart much from the original, and the diagrams are faithful reproductions of those of L'Hospital. Some new material is added, however, on logarithms, exponentials, and trigonometric functions. The second part or appendix (separately paginated) is on the inverse method of fluxions [i.e. integration], and this constitutes a new work. L'Hospital apparently had hoped that his treatise would sometime be completed by a second part on the integral calculus. The pages of the Analyse (even in later editions) carry the heading I. Part, but the author never completed another part. Stone was but one of several who undertook to compose a suitable second half. His attempt was so successful that it was translated into French and published in 1735, "servant de suite aux infiniment petits de M. le Marquis de l'Hospital."‘The Analyse des infiniment petits continued throughout the eighteenth century to be the standard elementary manual on higher mathematics’ (The European Mathematical Awakening, by Frank J. Swetz, pp. 203-4)The Analyse of L'Hospital (1696) was the first published book on the calculus, but it treated only differential calculus, and did so using Leibnizian differential notation. Provenance: William Gartland of Dublin. There was a surveyor of this name working in the city in the 1840s, and certainly the exquisitely neat notes in his hand would grace any engraved map. The notes fill the front free endpaper and occur sporadically amoung the preliminary pages. They concern the history of fluxions, the authors concerned, and the books. (ESTC T110037)

A New & Exact Map of the Coast, Countries and Islands within ye Limits of ye South Sea Company

      H. Moll, T. & J. Bowles, P. Overton & J. King, London 1730 - A fascinating and historically important map relating to the infamous "South Sea Bubble" and English piracy on the Spanish Main This fascinating map represents the synergy of one of the most sensational economic phenomena in British history and the intrigue surrounding the designs of London-based pirate adventurers. In 1711, as Britain was gaining the upper hand over Spain in Queen Anne's War (1702-14), the Lord Treasurer, Robert Hartley granted exclusive trading rights to commerce with Spanish America to a society of investors known as the South Sea Company. While some of the Company's members were actual corsairs who wished to attack Spanish galleons, by 1713 the Company was given official legitimacy as it was granted a privilege by Madrid to send one trading vessel a year to the region in question, in addition to being granted some involvement in the 'Asiento,' the African slave trade. While the Company did not actually make its first trading voyage until 1717, and even then only made a modest profit, wild speculation consumed London as thousands of investors came to believe that the Company promised to deliver astronomical riches in Andean silver and gold and slave sales. The Company's association with respected politicians and merchants added justification to the ebullient media campaign launched on numerous broadsides. The Exchequer loaned the Company over £11.7 million in public funds (an outrageous sum) and by August, 1720 individual shares reached a staggering high of £1,000. Described as "a company for carrying out an undertaking of great advantage, but nobody knows what it is," the share price began to rapidly plummet all the way down to a low of £100 per share once a few commentators began to ask the obvious question. The so-called "South Sea Bubble" had burst, leaving both the Exchequer and numerous investors with massive debts, based on loans leveraged against the share price while it was at a high. As we know today, it was not the first, and by no means the last occasion that the public had been swept up in such irrational exuberance. After its near collapse the Company managed to reconstitute itself, and it continued to maintain a limited trade with the Spanish Main until the 1760s, and from then until 1850 it served as debt management agency for the Exchequer. The main section of this magnificent map embraces all of South America, the West Indies and the southern portions of North America, including Florida and California (which is assumed to be an island). Spanish America is shown divided into its numerous captaincies and all aspects of the coastlines are labelled in great detail. A dotted line located far out into the ocean denotes "The Sea Limit" of the Company's exclusive operational space. The detailed lines of ocean currents are derived from Edmond Halley's revolutionary hydrological world map. This principal map is accompanied by nine exquisitely engraved cartographic insets detailing harbours and islands, which might be especially important to any aspiring corsair who may wish to stalk Spanish treasure fleets in the region. These sites include Acapulco, the Gulf of Fonseca, the Galapagos Islands, Juan Fernando Island, the Panamanian Isthmus, the Straits of Magellan, Pepys's Island and a general overview of the trans-Atlantic Passage from England. Above the main section, are three large and highly detailed inset maps of the important harbours of Chiloe, Valdivia (both in Chile) and Guyaquil (Ecuador). As suggested in the very lower part of the map, in addition to Halley, Moll based most of his geography on the works of the Parisian royal cartographer Guillaume De L'Isle. The present map was part of Herman Moll's magnificent folio work, a New and Compleat Atlas . Moll was the most important cartographer working in London during his era, a career that spanned over fifty years. His origins have been a source of great scholarly debate; however, the prevailing opinion suggests that he hailed from the Hanseat [Attributes: Soft Cover]
