Maxims of Equity, Collected From, And Proved by Cases, Out of the Books of the Best Authority, In the High Court of Chancery. To which is Added the Case of the Earl of Coventry, Concerning the Defective Execution of Powers Latlky Adjudged in the High Court of Chancery. [London]: Printed by E. and R. Nutt, and R. Gosling, 1728. [x], 72, [12], [2], 20 pp. Folio (12" x 8"). Recent period-style calf, blind panels to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Moderate toning and occasional light foxing to text, internally clean. * Second edition, a reissue of the first edition (1727) with an altered titlepage and a preliminary advertisement leaf. This was the first textbook on equity published since St. Germain's Doctor and Student (1523). It is generally considered to be the book that founded the field of equity jurisprudence. Francis outlines fourteen maxims, such as "Equality is Equity" and "Equity suffers not a right to be without a remedy." Each maxim is followed by a brief summary of cases that illustrate its application. As Roscoe Pound observed, Francis created a precursor to the casebook: "his maxims for the most part are independent attempts to state principles derived from the study of cases.": Pound, "On Certain Maxims of Equity" in Cambridge Legal Essays 261-262.         The Natural History of the Human Teeth.London: J. Johnson, 1771. First edition.

An exceptionally fine copy of "the first scientific study of the teeth and the basic to all modern dentistry" (<i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i>).<br/><br/> ❧Norman 1116; Lilly, <i>Notable Medical Books</i> 131; <i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i> 968; Garrison-Morton 3675. <br/><br/> "Hunter's work on the structure and diseases of the teeth began a new era for dentistry in England, placing what had been an empirical art upon a basis of careful scientific observation, and providing a foundation for further research. In the <i>Natural history</i>, Hunter gave detailed accounts of the anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity and jaw, introduced the modern scientific nomenclature for the teeth, established the tooth's construction of bone, pulp and enamel, and examined the processes of tooth development in fetuses and children" (Norman).<br/><br/> "John Hunter (1728-1793) was brought from Scotland to London as a rough, uncouth twenty year-old to learn dissection at his brother William's school of anatomy. John showed such a striking aptitude for the new activity that, within a year, he was demonstrating the art of dissection. Although he never had a traditional medical education, he began to study surgery at the age of twenty-three under William Cheselden (q.v.). John Hunter's superb background in comparative anatomy and pathology and his ability to relate structure to function made him one of England's greatest surgeons and perhaps the founder of experimental surgery. Among his innovations was a technique for treating aneurysms without amputation by use of a single ligature to tie off the artery in the healthy tissue. He is said to have elevated surgery from an art to a science by showing that the proper route to the operating room led through the laboratory. In a busy life devoted to research, teaching, and the practice of surgery, Hunter found time to study the structure, development, and diseases of the teeth and to collect and arrange a series of dental specimens. Hunter's two treatises on the teeth rank him as one of the founders of modern scientific dentistry. In the first book (1771), Hunter classified the teeth in the system still used today and was the first to state definitely that the human teeth 'are never more than thirty-two.' He traced their development in the fetus and the child and established their structure of pulp, bone, and enamel. At the end of the book are descriptions of devices to correct malocclusion and even suggestions for a method of transplantation. The second volume (1778) dealt with pathology. Hunter discussed the diseases of the teeth, the alveolar processes, and the gums; abscesses; and nerve pains in the jaws. He concluded that tooth decay starts on the surface of the tooth and not in the interior. Like his brother William, John founded a famous museum. Housing more than 13,000 specimens demonstrating comparative anatomy and the physiologic processes in animals and man, it was also a menagerie that contained numerous live mammals. After his death, the great Hunterian Museum became the property of the Royal College of Surgeons. It was partially destroyed by Nazi bombs in 1941. John Hunter was a student of Percivall Pott, a teacher of Edward Jenner, and, with William Heberden, a consultant on an illness of Benjamin Franklin. Originally buried in St. Martin's-in-the Fields, his body was moved to Westminster Abbey sixty-six years after his death."         ]. Designatio iconographica Oberleutensdorfenses Pannarias Officianas, vulgo Fabricas, penicilli arbitro repraesentans

Prague: s.n., 1728. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio [49 x 35.5 cm]. 20 engraved and numbered plates [plate marks between 33.5 x 23 cm and 35 x 26.5 cm], some with titles and captions printed above and below image using separate plates. Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf, boards slightly too long for leaves, suggesting at first glance remboîtage, although remnants of a manuscript title label on spine confirm the marriage is quite old as is the sewing; raised bands, marbled paste downs. Boards scuffed, patched and stained in places, corners renewed; repairs to spine. Broad-margined engravings, some marginal fingersoiling, minor marginal repairs to plates 2, 6 and 18, clean tear into plate 14 unobtrusively repaired; library stamp of Jesuit College at Linz on title page. Overall, very good. Only edition of the Designatio iconographica Oberleutensdorfenses - a very rare work of 20 large engravings illustrating the early 18th-century textile manufacture, industrial architecture, and labor practices of Waldstein Woolen Mills - privately printed in Prague in 1728 for the Habsburg Count Johann Joseph von Waldstein (1684-1731), the Mills' proprietor. The work commemorates his transformation of Oberleutesndorf in Bohemia (now Horní Litvínov, Czech Republic) from a small village of "thirteen miserable huts" in 1715 into a "company town" with 388 employees by 1728 (Freudenberger, 15, 61). Although little is known about the circumstances surrounding the publication of this work, great pride on the part of Waldstein is suggested not only by its scope but also by the quality of the engraving executed by well-known Bohemian artists - presumably at some expense - who produced both the designs and cut the plates. The proto-factories of the Waldstein mills, built in 1715, were among the first to collect laborers (who before would have worked in a cottage-industry system) within purpose-built structures, and so apparently predated even John Lombe's water mill at Derby (operational in 1721)-- a building often cited as the first example of true factory architecture. Remarkable is that Waldstein seems to have conceived this industrial venture ex nihilo, establishing a woolen factory where before there was scarcely a cottage industry, training workers specifically for his enterprise, and conceiving a novel infrastructure to fit his vision. ..........         Atlas maritimus & commercialis; or, a general view of the world, so far as relates to trade and navigation / Sailing Directions for All the Known Coasts and Islands on the Glob, with a Sett of Sea-Charts

James Knapton, London 1728 - This commercial sea atlas was published in 1728 as a guide to British global commerce. Today, it is a historically significant English overview of world trade during a rapid period of development of the British Empire's trading power. The atlas consists of two parts. The first is the "Atlas Maritimus & Commercialis" proper, which provides a geographical overview of the world as it relates to trade and navigation. It also gives an account of contemporary commerce, including the traded commodities of each country. The second part is "A General Coasting Pilot" by Nathaniel Cutler, which provides sailing directions. The volume was published anonymously, though the maps are often attributed to Sir Edmond Halley, the Astronomer Royal of Britain, who also wrote the prefatory note discussing the charts' use. The atlas's emphasis on commerce in addition to geography distinguishes it from "The English Pilot," the period's standard in maritime charts. It was also notable for covering the entire globe, including the south and west coasts of America, in one volume. This is an early issue of the Atlas, with A Chart of the Coast of Scotland on a globular projection. London: 1728.Sir Edmond Halley (1656--1742) was an English astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist, and physicist known for computing the orbit of the eponymous Halley's Comet. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain after John Flamsteed. John Senex (1678-1740) was a kind of Renaissance man of the 18th-century map world, working at times as a scholar, surveyor, engraver, astrologer, book seller and publisher of maps, atlases and globes. In a short period, he developed from an apprentice into one of the most important cartographers of the period and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, as well as Official Geographer to Queen Anne of Great Britain. A wonderful rarity about 'Globular Projection" maps which was invented by Halley, Harris and Senex. Includes the unforgettable large four sheet map "A Chart of the Atlantick Ocean Shewing the Coast from Texel to C. Cantin". Two parts in one volume. Illustrated with 53 of 54 fine uncolored copper plate maps, (last celestial chart is missing with a full size facsimile version provided from the British Library edition), and 5 fold-out diagrams tipped into the second text. Title page printed in black and red, foreword, preface, list of subscribers, and list of charts. Dedication page has a repair to the margin. "Atlas maritimus & commercialis," 340 pp. plus index. "General Coasting Pilot," 195 pp. plus maps. Page numbers written in ink. Elephant folio (21.25" x 13"), scuffing and corner wear to original brown leather binding, gilt spine in 8 compartments. Some toning and light scattered foxing to text and maps. Repairs to World Chart, North America chart and Celestial map along bottom fold out, small abrasion in margin of China map.
