Fair impression, some what light to cartouche & vignette, prospects could be darker ; light soiling to blank margins; old tape to lower centrefold in blank margin causing discolouration [not entering image]. Johann Baptist Homann (1664 ?" 1724) from 1687 Homann worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece "Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt" Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, in business until 1848, known as "Homann Erben", "Homanniani Heredes", "Heritiers de Homann" abroad. Africa Morocco Marrkesh Meknes Canary Islands

a single sheet containing thirteen mounted cut signatures, of some of the most eminent scientists of the eighteenth century being

      1. HUNTER, John ( 1728-1793 ). Anatomist, biologist, and founder of scientific surgery. Author of many important medical treatises, his most influential work was " A Treatise on the Blood, Inflammation, and Gunshot Wounds, " published in 1794. 2. JENNER, Edward ( 1749-1823 ). Pioneer of vaccination, his experimental work on immunisation against smallpox led President Thomas Jefferson to write to Jenner, " Future generations will know by history only that the loathsome smallpox existed and by you has been extirpated." He was elected F.R.S. in 1788. 3. CAVENDISH, Henry ( 1731-1810 ). Made discoveries in composition of gases, electricity, geophysics. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1760, and his important paper " Experiments on Air," was read before the Society in 1784.In the course of his his experiments he made the discovery that when hydrogen is burned in the air, water is produced. His name is commemorated in the great Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. 4. HERSCHEL, Sir William ( 1738-1822 ). Astronomer he discovered the planet Uranus, the intrinsic motion of the Sun, and the form of the Milky Way. He is also remembered for his discovery of infra-red radiation in the light of the Sun and for some remarkable conjectures as to the properties of this radiation. 5. PRIESTLEY, Joseph ( 1733-1804 ). A great experimental chemist, a theologian, educationist and political thinker, and known as the " discoverer " of Oxygen. He was elected F. R. S in 1766, and his " History and Present State of Electricity " was published in 1767. His important work on gases " Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air " was published in 1774. 6. BANKS, Sir Joseph ( 1743-1820 ). Botanist; President of the Royal Society for forty-two years; statesman of science. He accompanied Captain James Cook on his great expedition to the South Pacific, on board the Endeavour, on what is recognised as one of the great voyages of exploration and observation. 7. SOLANDER, Daniel ( 1736-1782 ). Botanist. He accompanied Sir Joseph Banks on Cook's voyage in the Endeavour. 8. RUMFORD, Count ( Benjamin Thompson ). ( 1753-1814 ). Social scientist; measured relationship between work and heat. His chief interests in science were in gunpowder and firearms. Through experiments, which he conducted in the boring of a cannon, he found that it was possible for the temperature of a quantity of water to be raised to the boiling point by friction, without fire. This is discussed in his famous paper " An inquiry concerning the sources of heat which is excited by friction." A friend of the President of the Royal Society Sir Joseph Banks he was elected to the Society in 1779. Eventually the Society named the Rumford Medal in honour of him, one of it's highest awards. 9. DIMSDALE, Thomas ( 1712-1800 ). Physician. He wrote several works on inoculation, including in 1767, " The present method of inoculation for the small-pox," which passed through many editions. 10. ABERNETHY, John ( 1764-1831 ). An eminent surgeon. He held popular lectures on anatomy, physiology, surgery and pathology. Much of his importance as a teacher lies in his recognition of the importance of comparative anatomy in the study of anatomy and physiology. A devout student of John Hunter, he continued his key work on ligation with great sucess . The other three signatures are of Charles Cavendish: this we believe to that of Henry Cavendish's father, Lord Charles Cavendish, third son of the 2nd Duke of Devonshire; and of Thomas Tyndall, possibly he who built the Royal Fort in the Clifton area of Bristol around the year 1767. The final signature intriguingly is that of Benjamin Franklin, while we are sure it is in Franklin's own hand, it looks to have been cut from the contents of a document, so is not his actual autograph as such.
