        Letter signed ("Eugenio di Savoya").

Vienna, 27. III. 1728. - Folio. 1 p. To the balio (bailiff) Portocarrero in Palermo, discussing the delicate matter of arresting a Tunesian pirate in Messina, and the advice of Simon Pilarino (d. 1733), Austria's capable consul in Tunis: "Illustrissimo, et eccellentissimo signore mio osservantissimo. - Oriental matters were the precinct of the Imperial War Council, over which Prince Eugene presided, thus uniting the offices of Minister of War and of Foreign Affairs. The Tunesian corsairs were pirates and privateers who operated from the North African "Barbary Coast", in particular the ports of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli. In addition to seizing ships, they engaged in raids on European coastal towns and villages, mainly in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, capturing Christian slaves for the Ottoman slave trade as well as the general Arabic market in North Africa and the Middle East. Following the Treaty of Passarowitz, Emperor Charles VI had in 1725 entered into a Treaty of Peace and Navigation with Tunis: captured ships and their enslaved crew were to be released; navigation and use of ports was to be unrestricted for all Imperial subjects. The present communication is part of the larger context of an affair that would trouble Tunesian-Imperial relations for years to come: earlier that year, the corsairs had captured a Venetian ship (not protected by the 1725 treaty) which, however, foundered near Catania in a storm. Although the Tunesian crew were equipped with passports issued by the Imperial consul, the Sicilians stole their prize and arrested the Muslims, whom they subsequently sold as slaves - a breach of international law which, outrageously, found approval with the maritime court of Messina. To avert massive retribution by an immediate all-out corsair raid on Sicilian and Neapolitan ships and ports, Pilarino had to bribe his way to an audience with Hussein Bey and arrange a Tunesian mission to Vienna, where an envoy might formally put forth the Bey's complaints - a visit which eventually took place in 1732/33.         Lust-Stück der Gärten. Parterres ou Broderies des Jardins.

Augsburg, Johann Andreas Pfeffel, [1728], [1740s].. Oblong folio (245 x 375 mm). 2 engr. title pages and 22 + 20 engr. plates by Pfeffel after Danreiter. (Bound with) II: Steingruber, Johann David. Architecture civile. Erster Theil [= all published]. Architecturally engr. title-page, engr. preface (misbound before title-page), and 25 numbered engr. plates by J. D. Ringlin after Steingruber; explanatory text engraved within the plate in German and French. - (Bound with) III: Charmeton, Georges. Plans de divers edifices et corniches choisies. Abriße unterschiedener Gebälcke und Kronwercke. 12 engr. plates, including the title-page. Contemp. German half vellum over paste boards and beige paper covers (a little foxed); slightly faded red stained gilt lettered label tooled directly onto spine. Red speckled edges.. A remarkable sammelband of three rare architectural and garden ornament works (the first in two parts), all of which were published by the important Augsburg print publisher Johann Andreas Pfeffel. I: First and only edition of a very scarce ornamental garden pattern book by the newly appointed court gardener and inspector of the Salzburg gardens, Franz Anton Danreiter (1695-1760). In 1728 Danreiter was appointed court gardener and inspector to related buildings by the ducal bishop of Salzburg. He translated Dezallier's "La Theorie et la Pratique du Jardinage" into German and became one of the more important mediators of French garden design to the German-speaking countries. His own designs issued in the present work, in two parts, with the second part particularly rare, show more than 100 ornamental and fanciful planting patterns on 42 plates. This was his first and rarest model book with garden plans for parterres. They show that far from endlessly repeating the strict symmetrical canon of French Baroque garden design, Danreiter developed a never-ending variety in ornamental designs which herald the German rococo. Danreiter served five successive bishops in Salzburg. Between 1727 and 1735 he also engraved a number of large-scale views of the city which represent a unique documentation of Salzburg in its 18th century baroque glory. - II: First edition of Steingruber's first published architectural book, showing designs for town houses and palaces. In total Steingruber shows seven scaled designs from a garden pavilion in an aristocratic park (2), several ever more lavish town houses for the haute bourgeois (4), and finally a ducal residence (1). Each design is shown in as much detail as possible with elevations and plans, but also several sections. The grander houses are shown with views of street and garden elevations; some designs have differently laid out plans. The architect J. D. Steingruber (1702-87) was appointed court architect by the Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach in 1734. In the course of his near sixty-year tenure of this position he was able to transform the townscape of Ansbach after his own designs. He is best remembered for his playful "Architektonisches Alphabet" (1773), a remarkable series of designs in which each building has a ground plan based on a different letter in the alphabet. - III: Scarce 18th century copy of Charmeton's rare "Diverses corniches choisies sur l'anticque", originally issued in 30 plates in c. 1670 (cf. Guilmard, 68). Pfeffel decided to issue only a selection of the designs. - Very rare: the only three complete copies of Danhauser's work located in libraries worldwide are at Augsburg (cf. KVK), Dumbarton Oaks (cf. OCLC), and the National Gallery, Washington (cf. Millard, Northern, no. 18). The Bavarian State Library and the British Library have only the first part; Olschki, Choix, 645 offered a copy with the second part, but lacked 2 plates in that part. - First leaf with near-contemporary aristocratic illegible ownership stamp. A fine architectural sammelband in excellent fresh condition with the plates in strong impressions, all printed an thick paper. - I: Kat. der Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 3332 (wrong collation). II: Kat. der Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 2006. Cicognara 676. OCLC records copies at Avery and Getty; as well as 4 copies in Germany (including Berlin). III: Kat. der Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 3929.

To which is Added the Case of the Earl of Coventry, Concerning the Defective Execution of Powers Latlky Adjudged in the High Court of Chancery. [London]: Printed by E. and R. Nutt, and R. Gosling, 1728. [x], 72, [12], [2], 20 pp. Folio (12" x 8"). Recent period-style calf, blind panels to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Moderate toning and occasional light foxing to text, internally clean. * Second edition, a reissue of the first edition (1727) with an altered titlepage and a preliminary advertisement leaf. This was the first textbook on equity published since St. Germain's Doctor and Student (1523). It is generally considered to be the book that founded the field of equity jurisprudence. Francis outlines fourteen maxims, such as "Equality is Equity" and "Equity suffers not a right to be without a remedy." Each maxim is followed by a brief summary of cases that illustrate its application. As Roscoe Pound observed, Francis created a precursor to the casebook: "his maxims for the most part are independent attempts to state principles derived from the study of cases.": Pound, "On Certain Maxims of Equity" in Cambridge Legal Essays 261-262.         The Natural History of the Human Teeth.London: J. Johnson, 1771. First edition.

An exceptionally fine copy of "the first scientific study of the teeth and the basic to all modern dentistry" (<i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i>).<br/><br/> ❧Norman 1116; Lilly, <i>Notable Medical Books</i> 131; <i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i> 968; Garrison-Morton 3675. <br/><br/> "Hunter's work on the structure and diseases of the teeth began a new era for dentistry in England, placing what had been an empirical art upon a basis of careful scientific observation, and providing a foundation for further research. In the <i>Natural history</i>, Hunter gave detailed accounts of the anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity and jaw, introduced the modern scientific nomenclature for the teeth, established the tooth's construction of bone, pulp and enamel, and examined the processes of tooth development in fetuses and children" (Norman).<br/><br/> "John Hunter (1728-1793) was brought from Scotland to London as a rough, uncouth twenty year-old to learn dissection at his brother William's school of anatomy. John showed such a striking aptitude for the new activity that, within a year, he was demonstrating the art of dissection. Although he never had a traditional medical education, he began to study surgery at the age of twenty-three under William Cheselden (q.v.). John Hunter's superb background in comparative anatomy and pathology and his ability to relate structure to function made him one of England's greatest surgeons and perhaps the founder of experimental surgery. Among his innovations was a technique for treating aneurysms without amputation by use of a single ligature to tie off the artery in the healthy tissue. He is said to have elevated surgery from an art to a science by showing that the proper route to the operating room led through the laboratory. In a busy life devoted to research, teaching, and the practice of surgery, Hunter found time to study the structure, development, and diseases of the teeth and to collect and arrange a series of dental specimens. Hunter's two treatises on the teeth rank him as one of the founders of modern scientific dentistry. In the first book (1771), Hunter classified the teeth in the system still used today and was the first to state definitely that the human teeth 'are never more than thirty-two.' He traced their development in the fetus and the child and established their structure of pulp, bone, and enamel. At the end of the book are descriptions of devices to correct malocclusion and even suggestions for a method of transplantation. The second volume (1778) dealt with pathology. Hunter discussed the diseases of the teeth, the alveolar processes, and the gums; abscesses; and nerve pains in the jaws. He concluded that tooth decay starts on the surface of the tooth and not in the interior. Like his brother William, John founded a famous museum. Housing more than 13,000 specimens demonstrating comparative anatomy and the physiologic processes in animals and man, it was also a menagerie that contained numerous live mammals. After his death, the great Hunterian Museum became the property of the Royal College of Surgeons. It was partially destroyed by Nazi bombs in 1941. John Hunter was a student of Percivall Pott, a teacher of Edward Jenner, and, with William Heberden, a consultant on an illness of Benjamin Franklin. Originally buried in St. Martin's-in-the Fields, his body was moved to Westminster Abbey sixty-six years after his death."         ]. Designatio iconographica Oberleutensdorfenses Pannarias Officianas, vulgo Fabricas, penicilli arbitro repraesentans

Prague: s.n., 1728. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio [49 x 35.5 cm]. 20 engraved and numbered plates [plate marks between 33.5 x 23 cm and 35 x 26.5 cm], some with titles and captions printed above and below image using separate plates. Bound in contemporary sprinkled calf, boards slightly too long for leaves, suggesting at first glance remboîtage, although remnants of a manuscript title label on spine confirm the marriage is quite old as is the sewing; raised bands, marbled paste downs. Boards scuffed, patched and stained in places, corners renewed; repairs to spine. Broad-margined engravings, some marginal fingersoiling, minor marginal repairs to plates 2, 6 and 18, clean tear into plate 14 unobtrusively repaired; library stamp of Jesuit College at Linz on title page. Overall, very good. Only edition of the Designatio iconographica Oberleutensdorfenses - a very rare work of 20 large engravings illustrating the early 18th-century textile manufacture, industrial architecture, and labor practices of Waldstein Woolen Mills - privately printed in Prague in 1728 for the Habsburg Count Johann Joseph von Waldstein (1684-1731), the Mills' proprietor. The work commemorates his transformation of Oberleutesndorf in Bohemia (now Horní Litvínov, Czech Republic) from a small village of "thirteen miserable huts" in 1715 into a "company town" with 388 employees by 1728 (Freudenberger, 15, 61). Although little is known about the circumstances surrounding the publication of this work, great pride on the part of Waldstein is suggested not only by its scope but also by the quality of the engraving executed by well-known Bohemian artists - presumably at some expense - who produced both the designs and cut the plates. The proto-factories of the Waldstein mills, built in 1715, were among the first to collect laborers (who before would have worked in a cottage-industry system) within purpose-built structures, and so apparently predated even John Lombe's water mill at Derby (operational in 1721)-- a building often cited as the first example of true factory architecture. Remarkable is that Waldstein seems to have conceived this industrial venture ex nihilo, establishing a woolen factory where before there was scarcely a cottage industry, training workers specifically for his enterprise, and conceiving a novel infrastructure to fit his vision. ..........
