Vegetable staticks and Statical Essays Containing Haemastaticks

London: W. & J. Innys; Innys & Manby; Woodward, 1727-1733. <p>Hales, Stephen (1677-1761). (1) Vegetable staticks: Or, an account of some statical experiments on the sap in vegetables. . . . 8vo. [7], vii, [2], 376pp. (roman-numbered pages have even-numbered rectos and odd-numbered versos). 19 engraved plates. London: W. & J. Innys, 1727. 193 x 121 mm. Paneled calf c. 1727, gilt spine, label renewed, light wear. (2) Statical essays: containing haemastaticks. . . . 8vo. xxii, [26], 361, [23]pp. London: W. Innys. . . , 1733. 197 x 122 mm. Mottled calf, gilt-ruled spine c. 1733, skillfully rebacked, label renewed. Together 2 volumes. Very good. Bookplate of distinguished British pathologist Alastair Robb-Smith (1908-2000) in <i>Statical Essays</i>.</p><p>First Editions. Hales initiated a new stage in physiological experimentation with his "statical" methods, which were characterized by precise quantitative measurements, repetition and the used of controls, and were based on the assumption that that the known laws of matter operated in the bodies of plants and animals as well as in non-living materials. In his investigations of plant physiology, described in Vegetable Staticks, Hales studied the movement of water in plants, determining that leaf suction is the main force by which water is raised through a plant, and showing that plants lose water constantly via transpiration through their leaves. He also demonstrated that plants do not have a true circulation, and developed techniques to measure the varying rates of growth in different plant structures.</p><p><i>Vegetable Staticks</i> is the first volume of Hales&#39;s <i>Statical Essays</i>, the second volume of which (<i>Haemastaticks</i>) appeared in 1733. <i>Haemastaticks</i>, which was published to accompany the second edition of Hales&#39; Vegetable Staticks, records "Hales&#39; invention of the manometer, with which he was the first to measure blood-pressure. His work is the greatest single contribution to our knowledge of the vascular system after Harvey, and led to the development of the blood-pressure measuring instruments now in universal use" (Garrison-Morton 765).</p><p>In the course of his work Hales indirectly discovered vasodilatation and vasoconstriction. Concluding that the force of the arterial blood in the capillaries could not be sufficient to produce muscular motion, he suggested a force regulated by the nerves, and perhaps electrical. "Hales was therefore the first physiologist to suggest, with some evidence to support it, the role of electricity in neuromuscular phenomena" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).</p><p>The title <i>Statical Essays</i> does not appear in the first edition of <i>Vegetable Staticks</i>; it was first applied to the whole work on the publication of the second edition (1731). Horblit 45a (<i>Vegetable Staticks</i>); 45b (<i>Haemastaticks</i>). Printing and the Mind of Man 189. DSB. Dibner, Heralds of Science, 26. Henrey 777. Morton, History of Botany, pp. 246-54.</p>

THE CASE OF SIR ROBERT AUSTEN AND SIR ROBERT FURNESE, PETITIONERS FOR NEW-ROMNEY IN THE COUNTY OF KENT.

No printer or date but, [1727], [London] - Folio. Single sheet letterpress broadside. 9.75 x 15 inches. With a docket title to otherwise blank verso, The Case of Sir Robert Austen and Sir Robert Furnese } Barts. At some time bound into a volume and subsequently removed, inner blank margin partly cut away, traces of previous folding, and some foxing. Four lines, contemporaneously deleted in ink, but still legible. Decorative initial. A rare printed broadside concerning the disputed New Romney parliamentary election of 1727. As a Cinque Port, New Romney returned two MPs (Barons) to Parliament from 1371 to 1832. The right to vote in elections was restricted to the Mayor and the Common Council or, as the broadside states, 'by the Mayor, Jurats, and the Commonalty of the Corporation, and there are only two Ways of obtaining such Freedom; the one by Birth, being the Sons of Freemen, and Resident within the Corporation, and the other ex Gratia, by Election of a Common Assembly of the Corporation.' At the election held on 17th August 1727, the two petitioners, Sir Robert Austen and Sir Robert Furnese stood against David Papillon (who had been MP since 1722) and John Essington. All four candidates secured eleven votes each, the Mayor, John Coates, voting for Papillon and Essington. The Mayor then voted again for these two and declared them elected as MPs for New Romney. Disputing this result, the two losing candidates drew up the petition. They also pointed out that the Mayor had omitted the vote of John Mascall, an elected freeman, but had allowed the vote of Jeremiah Smith who had been refused admission as a freeman in 1724. If these irregularities were set aside, the petitioners, Austen and Furnese, would have been returned by a majority of one. It should be noted that although the petitioners claim that both Papillon and Essington were the sitting members, the list of New Romney MPs indicates that only Papillon had already been MP, whereas the other sitting MP was no less than Furnese (elected 1710, 1713 and 1722). The Petition was evidently granted for in 1728, the election results were set aside and Austen and Furnese were declared the winners. Austen therefore served as one of the New Romney MPs, 1728-34. In the case of Furnese, however, a further complication arose when he was also elected for one of the Kent county seats, which he chose to represent, rather than New Romney. Consequently the recently unseated Papillon was returned again, this time as the legitimate MP for New Romney. Papillon was re-elected in 1734 but had also been elected for Dover, which he chose to represent instead of New Romney. Austen, who had been unseated in 1734 was returned again in 1736 to serve until 1741. About seven years later John Coates was playing the same game again. As outgoing Mayor he irregularly swore in two additional freemen, without the consent of the commonalty as required, and then used their votes, with the addition of two non-residents (thereby not entitled to vote), including David Papillon, then still MP, to elect Mr Wightwick as the new Mayor. The opposing faction, however, chose Richard Elles, leading to unseemly scuffling at the swearing-in ceremony: 'For upwards of a year there were, in fact, two Mayors acting in New Romney for part of the time two Town Clerks, and indeed something like two rival and independent administrations. It must of course, be remembered that the main functions of an eighteenth century municipal corporation were to return burgesses to Parliament, to spend the corporation property, and to feast its members'. Both sides filed writs against each other, and after three separate court hearings, judgement was passed against both mayors. After the new election of 1735 Richard Elles was sworn Mayor and Sir Robert Austen and Henry Furnese (presumably the heir of Sir Robert Furnese) were invited to come to the town and partake of an entertainment: 'New Romney had returned to normal conditions, and the Corporation was resuming one of its three essential

THE HERMIT: or, the unparalleled sufferings, and surprizing adventures, of Philip Quarll, and Englishman: who was discovered by Mr. Dorrington, a Bristol merchant, upon an uninhabited island, in the South-Sea; where he lived above fifty years, without any human assistance. Containing I. His Conference with those who found him out; to whom he recites the most material circumstances of his life; as, that he was born in the parish of St. Giles, educated by the charitable contribution of a lady, and put 'prentice to a locksmith. II. How he left his master, and took up with a notorious house-breaker, who was hanged; how, after his escape, he went to sea a cabin-boy, married a famous whore, listed himself a common soldier, turned a singing-master, and married three wives, for which he was tried and condemned, at the Baily. III. How he was pardoned by K. Charles II. turned merchant, and was shipwrecked on a desolate island on the coast of Mexico. With a curious frontispiece. The Fifth Edition.

272 pages. Engraved frontispiece. Contemporary full sheep, paneled spine with red title label. 12mo. Binding worn and cracked at joints; frontispiece off-set to title; date and cost of book [2d] on endpaper. A very good copy. The Hermit, or The English Hermit, as it was more correctly known, was a highly popular work of fiction throughout the 18th and early nineteenth century, rivaling the popularity of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, with which it has much in common. While searching for food on a seemingly uninhabited island Edward Dorrington and his crew stumble upon a settlement. They soon discover that the buildings and everything in them belong to a single man who has been living on the island alone, but for the company of a succession of monkeys, for more than fifty years. Dorrington offers to rescue the man from the island, but the hermit declines, and offers the group a fine dinner while he recounts the tale of his adventure-filled life. The book was first published in 1727, but nothing is known of the author.

MÉMOIRES DE FRANÇOIS DE PAULE DE CLERMONT, Marquis de Montglat. [4 volumes].

(Barbier, III, 195 ? OHR, planche 2292 ? Michaud, "Biographie Universelle", T. XXIX, p. 130). Two well preserved and scarce religoustexts in Latinbound in one. &#39;Glossarium Graecum in Sacros Novi Foederis Libros Ex Mss&#39; and &#39;Joannis Alberti Periculum Criticum In Quo Loca Quaedam Cum Veteris Ac Novi Foederis Tum Hesychii & Aliorum Illustrantur Indicantur, Emendantur&#39;. Glossary of Greek manuscripts of the sacred books of the New Covenant and a criticallookat the Old and New Testament. Includes index, addresses to the reader and dedication to Men of the Church of Hamburg, John Christopher and Albert Fabricius who was a professor of rhetoric and moral philosophy and theology. In 1721, Joannes Albertiwas confirmed as minister in Hoogwoud; here, he collected from heathen texts passages and sayings that were similar to those used in the Greek language New Testament to defend the style of the Evangelists and Apostles against those who considered their style as poor and full of Hebrew sayings. This work highlights some aspects of the holy books, when compared with other Greek writers, explaining where needed the language used in the Old Testament and indicating the best reading according to Alberti, without ignoring the explanations of other theologians. He was widely known to be an excellent theologian and one of the best scholars of Biblical hermeneutics of his time. Condition: In a full vellum binding. Externally, sound with fading. There is a library label and library number to the tail of the spine and also mark to spine from previous label.         Vegetable staticks and Statical Essays Containing Haemastaticks

      W. & J. Innys; Innys & Manby; Woodward 1727-1733, London - Hales, Stephen (1677-1761). (1) Vegetable staticks: Or, an account of some statical experiments on the sap in vegetables. . . . 8vo. [7], vii, [2], 376pp. (roman-numbered pages have even-numbered rectos and odd-numbered versos). 19 engraved plates. London: W. & J. Innys, 1727. 193 x 121 mm. Paneled calf c. 1727, gilt spine, label renewed, light wear. (2) Statical essays: containing haemastaticks. . . . 8vo. xxii, [26], 361, [23]pp. London: W. Innys. . . , 1733. 197 x 122 mm. Mottled calf, gilt-ruled spine c. 1733, skillfully rebacked, label renewed. Together 2 volumes. Very good. Bookplate of distinguished British pathologist Alastair Robb-Smith (1908-2000) in Statical Essays.First Editions. He also demonstrated that plants do not have a true circulation, and developed techniques to measure the varying rates of growth in different plant structures.Vegetable Staticks is the first volume of Hales's Statical Essays, the second volume of which (Haemastaticks) appeared in 1733. Haemastaticks, which was published to accompany the second edition of Hales' Vegetable Staticks, records "Hales' invention of the manometer, with which he was the first to measure blood-pressure. His work is the greatest single contribution to our knowledge of the vascular system after Harvey, and led to the development of the blood-pressure measuring instruments now in universal use" (Garrison-Morton 765).In the course of his work Hales indirectly discovered vasodilatation and vasoconstriction. Concluding that the force of the arterial blood in the capillaries could not be sufficient to produce muscular motion, he suggested a force regulated by the nerves, and perhaps electrical. "Hales was therefore the first physiologist to suggest, with some evidence to support it, the role of electricity in neuromuscular phenomena" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The title Statical Essays does not appear in the first edition of Vegetable Staticks; it was first applied to the whole work on the publication of the second edition (1731). Horblit 45a (Vegetable Staticks); 45b (Haemastaticks). Printing and the Mind of Man 189. DSB. Dibner, Heralds of Science, 26. Henrey 777. Morton, History of Botany, pp. 246-54.         Jesu Christi Heilsame Versohnung Fur Die Sundigen Menschen

Berlegis Johann Heinrich Russworm, Stockholm Und Leipzig 1727 - Jesus Christ's Wholesome Reconciliation for Sinful Mankind. Sermons by a popular preacher at the time, though I have found out very little about him. This is a remarkable and very rare book, consisting of 3 large parts, paginated separately; 660 + 535 + 416 pp. + an index for all 3 parts which is 50 or more pp. long. All are bound together in a massive tome of unadorned vellum, in good-only condition; the front board is warping, beginning to split at the bottom near the spine; vellum soiled, and the page edges have turned very dark. May have been rebound some time long ago; the endpapers are thicker than the text pages, though they are laid paper; and the headbands are remarkably whole and unworn. The binding is quite tight. Front pastedown is marred with a few odd, probably recent stains. Text pages are darkened to a deep cream but are free of foxing and quite legible if you can read the German Fraktur typeface. Has a frontispiece portrait, probably of the author, with a caption in Latin. Title page in red and black, and has a complex woodcut vignette which I think is a publisher's device. Le interessantissime tavole sono quasi tutte più volte ripieg. e includono una grande carta geografica del Giappone e piante di città (Nagasaki, Jedo, ecc.). Questa importante storia del Giappone ?gives an account of the ancient and present State and Government of that Empire; of its temples, palaces, castles and other buildings; of its metals, minerals, trees, plants, animals, birds and fishes; of the chronology and succession of the emperors, ecclesiastical and secular; of the original descent, religions, customs, and manufactures of the natives, and of their trade and commerce with the Dutch and Chinese. Together with a description of the kingdom of Siam. "Prima edizione" di estrema rarità. Cfr. .
