Eerste handleiding tot de bloem- teken- schilder- en borduurkonst, in XXIV. voorbeelden van bloemen en vruchten, in omtrekken en kleuren, nevens eene tafel der onderscheidene verwen. Amsterdam, W. Holtrop, 1802. Oblong 8vo (text) and oblong small 4to (plates) (12 x 17.5 cm). With loose full-page engraved colour-key plate showing 66 numbered small rectangles, hand-coloured as samples of watercolours, and 24 loose full-page engraved plates, each with a pair (or in one case 2 pair) of nearly identical flowering or fruit-bearing plants (plate size 9.5 x 14 cm), the left-hand examples left uncoloured and the right-hand examples coloured as a guide. Complete with the undated prospectus (one 8vo leaf, 22.5 x 12.5 cm, printed on both sides) with an engraved tulip at the head, nearly identical to no. 13 in the plates, but differently coloured. Loose in (later?) green paper wrapper, in contemporary slipcase covered with marbled paper. The 25 prints with gilt edges.

Saalmink, p. 1195 (1 copy); Picarta (same copy); WorldCat (same copy). Rare first and only edition of an exceptionally beautiful model book for painting, colouring and embroidery, mainly of flowers and fruits, designed by a painter from the famous Saxon porcelain factory at Meissen. The title-page merely calls him "Lück", but he must be either Johann Heinrich Lück (1727-1797), one of the most famous Meissen porcelain painters, or (since it does not indicate that he had recently died) possibly a son. The booklet accompanying the prints includes 11 pages of instructions and advice, and a numbered list of the 66 pigments used for the colour key.The prospectus includes a numbered list of the flower plates (and notes the colour key), a French poem by De Lille (both also present in the album itself), and a letter by the publisher addressed to "Nederlandsche Juffers" (Dutch young ladies), especially recommending Lück's models for their "creations with brush and needle". If accepted gratefully, the publisher would consider a second volume as well, but none appeared. We have located only one other copy (at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam). In fine condition. Rare popular guide to flower painting, intended for young ladies, by a leading painter of Meissen porcelain.

Amsterdam: Michel Charles Le Cene 1727 - Folio. [2] 12,., 439 pp.,; [2] pp. 445-808p (pagination continuous), 43 of 44 plates. 2 Volumes in One Bound in contemporary vellum. 7 raised bands. Leather spine label. Good binding and cover. Spine and hinges restored. Faint soiling to vellum. Pages tanned with a several pages with some offsetting and foxing. Lacks frontis and added title. All 27 plates & 16 maps are present. New edition revised, corrected and greatly enhanced the French translation due to the Sieur de Wicquefort. Brunet IV, 178; Cordier, Japonica, 367-68; Cordier, Sinaca 2077; Lust 342 Jean Albert Mandeslo set out in 1636 with the Embassy that the Duke of Holstein sent to Russia and Persia. He visited India, Ceylon, Madagascar, West Africa (Congo), and returned four years later. His story gives a very vivid picture of luxury, vices, curiosity and absolute disregard for life under the despotic tyranny of the Moghul Empire under Shah Jahan. In the port of Surat he arrived in April 1638 after he went to Ahmedabad and Agra. Although his observations of life in the capital are useful, he apparently did not hear anything about the Taj Mahal, which at that time was in the sixth year of building. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Voyages en Europe, Asie & Afrique.

Den Haag, Johnson & van Duren, 1727. - Folio (200 x 315 mm). 2 vols. (14), 472, 23 pp. (6), 496, 39 pp. With 2 engr. frontispieces, 2 engr. title vignettes, 47 engr. plates (some folding) after Hogarth, Picard and others, and 4 folding engr. maps. Modern half calf. First edition in French. "This important work describes La Mottraye’s travels over a 26-year period which took him through Northern Europe to Tartary and the Levant. The plates are of particular interest and include many signed by Hogarth which form part of his early work. They illustrate antiquities, objets d’art, and scenes of the eastern life. Especially interesting is a plate showing a dance at a Greek wedding, with each member of the party dressed in a different costume" (Blackmer). Chapter XII of vol. 1 discusses the Quran, and the Appendix contains extracts from a manuscript on the Muslim faith as well as a section on the Islamic calendar. "Aubry de la Mottraye, a Huguenot, travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Africa during the years 1696 to 1729, beginning in Scandinavia, where he became a confidant of Charles XII. He then went on to Tartary and the Levant. The work contains several notable costume plates, particularly relating to the Levant, some of which may have been inspired by Ferriol and Le Hay's 'Recueil de cent estamped représentant différentes nations du Levant' (1714)" (Atabey). - Occasional edge defects, repaired. Slight brownstaining. Formerly in the Ottoman collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer. Blackmer 946. Weber II, 443. Röhricht (Palästina), p. 287. Tobler 116. Chatzipanagioti-S. 504.         Memoires de François de Paul de Clermont Marquis de Montglat Mestre de Ca EDITION ORIGINALE

à Amsterdam: S.n., 1727. Fine. S.n., à Amsterdam 1727, 4 tomes en 4 Vol. in 12 (9x16,5cm), relié. - First Edition. A title vignette repeated on four volumes contained Erasmus. Title pages in red and black. Full brown calf time. Back to nerves ornate. Part of title and volume number in red morocco decorated with wheels. A lack in head cover of volume I had to work worm, ditto the last box. Wetness on the top plate of Volume II (blackened). 3 corners bumped. Essentially historical memories, the Marquis de Montglat gets very rarely scene, carefully gathering the facts of his time from 1635 to 1668; although memories provide military details (campaigns between France and Austria), Montglat seeks to thwart the mechanisms of the court; the troubles of the Fronde are skillfully described and with more impartiality in all the memories of the time (Retz et al.) The preface that the book is recommended Bougeant father, writer and Jesuit historian considered strong, which strove to edit very carefully these memories. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

INDIAN CONVERTS: or, Some Account of the Lives and Dying Speeches of a considerable Number of the Christianized INDIANS of Martha's Vineyard, in New-England. Viz. I. Of Godly Ministers. II. Of other Good Men. III. Of Religious Women. IV. Of Pious young Persons. To which is added, Some Account of those ENGLISH MINISTERS who have successfully presided over the Indian Work in that and the adjacent Islands. By Mr. Prince

Printed for Samuel Gerrish, Bookseller in Boston in New-England, and sold by J. Osborn and T. Longman in Pater-noster-Row, London 1727 - xxiv, 310, [2], 16 pp. Prince's account [pp 277 - 310] with a separate dated t.p., though pagination & registration continuous. 2 publisher sale lists comprise last 18 pages. Experience Mayhew was the fourth generation of Mayhews who preached to the Indians of Martha's Vineyard, his great-grandfather being Thomas Mayhew, to whom Sir Ferdinando Gorges granted the patent in 1641, along with Nantucket and the Elizabeth Islands. At the time of writing there were upwards of three thousand "praying Indians" on the Vineyard and Nantucket.Field's comments on this work are interesting enough that we quote, in-full, his remarks: "In this extraordinary relation of the effects of the Gospel upon the aborigines, are narrated biographical sketches of one hundred and twenty-nine Indians, who gave unexceptional tokens of conversion by Christian lives. The humane labors of this noble missionary contrast so strikingly with the bloody massacre of the Cheyennes in 1863, by the forces under the Rev. Colonel Chivington at Sand Creek, that we cannot but wonder if their religion was the same. [Resp.:] Justinus Gerhardus Duising - Hamberger, Georg Erhard (1697-1755) (Pr?ses); Duising, Justinus Gerhardus (1705-1761)(Resp. - - "Recent data on intercostal muscle function, largely electromyographic, tend to confirm the ideas of Hamberger, who, in 1748 (recte 1727), proposed a theory of intercostals muscle action upon the rib cage. Hamberger's scheme was based upon a consideration of the ribs as levers and the vertebral column and sternum as fulcra, and of the directions in which the internal and external intercostal muscle fibers ran. He proposed that the external intercostals were inspiratory and that the internal intercostals were expiratory, except in the parasternal regions where the internal intercostals (there are no other intercostal muscles) are inspiratory. Careful selective electromyographic studies in both animals and man (using small bipolar needle electrodes) by Draper et al, Taylor et al, and Sears et al have amply confirmed Hamberger's ideas".
