Mexico Folio (32 cm; 12.5"). 48 pp.. 1727–28 Arnedo de Marín was the accountant of the Inquisition in Mexico and the collection agent of the Conde de la Enjarada. He here gives the required accounting of income and expenses of the encomienda of the Conde de la Enjarada, Bernardino Carvajal Monctezuma y Vivero, and the collection of the share due to the Crown and now in the coffers of the Holy Office awaiting shipment on the Serrano fleet. The encomienda in question was located in regions of Metepeque and Tacuba. Even as late as the 1720s the encomienda seems to have been generating at least 4000 pesos per annum for the conde. His bloodline included as ancestors both Tezozomoc and Moctezeuma II. Provenance: Maggs, Bibliotheca Americana, part IV, 2912. Written in a very clear ecclesiastical notarial hand; stitched.

The Hague and Leiden, widow of Engelbrecht Boucquet and sons, Jan van der Deyster, and Boudewijn and Pieter van der Aa, 1727. - 8 volumes. 1mo and folio. With 7 (of 8) engraved frontispieces (lacking that of volume 4), 4 engraved dedications, 117 engraved maps on 61 leaves, 7 engraved plates and 502 engravings in text. Further with 127 (of 128) title-pages (including a general title-page, a title-page to 7 (of 8) volumes, lacking that of volume 4, and 118 for the separate works). Volume 1-3 & 5-8: contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine and board edges; volume 4: modern calf. Large paper copy of the so-called "folio-edition" (although here mostly printed as 1mo) of Van der Aa's voluminous collection of important voyages to the East and West Indies and other countries, undertaken by all European countries, other than the Dutch. Including voyages by Acosta, Balbi, Cabot, Cavendish, Chester, Columbus, Cortes, Coutinho, Da Cunha, Drake, Evesko, Frobisher, Gallonye, Da Gama, Garay, Garcia, Gilbert, Jenkinson, Harcourt, Herberer, Magallanes, Mildenhal and Cartwright, Mouette, Petelin and Andrasko, Raleigh, Saris, De Soto, etc. - The work is falsely attributed on the title-page to Johan Lodewijk Gottfried, by Van der Aa, most likely because he made good money publishing Gottfried's "Chronicle" in 1702. In reality Gottfried had nothing to do with the present work. The work was edited and co-published by Pieter van der Aa, known for his ambitious projects. Where other publishers were primarily concerned about the profits, Van der Aa wanted to publish outstanding books. For the present series of travels he either reused and revised older Dutch translations or had the original accounts translated for the first time into Dutch. In 1706 he already started publishing the translated voyages both in small (8vo) and large instalments (folio or 1mo), and a year later he published a 28-volume set of the 8vo editions. The folio editions were afterwards issued and divided in four large collections of two volumes each. The present issue, is a reissue of these four collections with their own independent tile-pages and frontispieces, and ads a new general title-page and list of subscribers. - While all sets seem to be described as "folio" the present set is printed mainly as 1mo, with some occasional quires in folio. And as the large editions of the two volume sets were available on normal paper (80 guilders) and on large paper (100 guilders; Hoftijzer, p. 43), it seems very likely the present set is one printed on large paper. All leaves are unwatermarked and the 1mo leaves are only slightly trimmed (measuring 396 x 238 mm with the tranchefiles often still visible) the folio leaves are trimmed more and don't have visible tranchefiles. The fourth volume is from a different set which is trimmed down much more, but also combines both 1mo and folio leaves. - Some occasional spots, a couple minor restorations and a few wormholes; a very good set, but with the fourth volume from a different and heavily trimmed set (though printed on the same large paper), in a modern binding and lacking the frontispiece and the title-page to the volume. The seven volumes with contemporary bindings slightly worn along the extremities and with some minor wear on the sides, but otherwise very good. Cordier, Sinica, cols. 1942-1943; Muller, America 1889; Sabin 3 note; Tiele, Bibl. 10; for Van der Aa: P.G.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jesu Christi Heilsame Versohnung Fur Die Sundigen Menschen

Stockholm Und Leipzig: Berlegis Johann Heinrich Russworm, 1727. Jesus Christ's Wholesome Reconciliation for Sinful Mankind. Sermons by a popular preacher at the time, though I have found out very little about him. This is a remarkable and very rare book, consisting of 3 large parts, paginated separately; 660 + 535 + 416 pp. + an index for all 3 parts which is 50 or more pp. long. All are bound together in a massive tome of unadorned vellum, in good-only condition; the front board is warping, beginning to split at the bottom near the spine; vellum soiled, and the page edges have turned very dark. May have been rebound some time long ago; the endpapers are thicker than the text pages, though they are laid paper; and the headbands are remarkably whole and unworn. The binding is quite tight. Front pastedown is marred with a few odd, probably recent stains. Text pages are darkened to a deep cream but are free of foxing and quite legible if you can read the German Fraktur typeface. Has a frontispiece portrait, probably of the author, with a caption in Latin. Title page in red and black, and has a complex woodcut vignette which I think is a publisher's device.. Hard Cover.

"Sébastien Vaillant is honored in France as the man who first understood the nature of sex in plants. He spent many years on the preparation of his Botanicon parisiense, in which he developed his study of sexual characteristics, but died before the work could be published" (Hunt). Plesch, p. 445-446. Nissen 2033. Hunt n° 470. DSB XIII, p. 553-554.         ACTS OF ASSEMBLY, PASSED IN THE COLONY OF VIRGINIA, FROM 1662, TO 1715. VOLUME I [all published].

London: Printed by John Baskett, 1727. - xxiv,391pp. Folio. Early 20th-century three-quarter morocco and cloth, gilt. Some rubbing to leather, light soiling. Faint ink library stamp and embossed blind-stamp on titlepage, minor chipping to edges of titlepage and first handful of leaves. Otherwise, a bright, clean copy. Very good. A rare and important London edition of early Virginia colonial law. Here, the Crown lays the foundation for legal proceedings in Virginia, setting up courts, law enforcement, trials by juries, a system of measurement by English weights and measures, numerous acts regarding slaves and Indians, and much more. A voluminous collection of over 600 legal acts, among which the most curious are several pertaining to rewards for killing wolves, one for punishing "Scandalous Persons," and an act to prevent the "destroying and murdering of Bastard Children." Brinley writes that this imprint "is extremely rare. It was not known to Jefferson or to Hening - who had seen no printed revisal or body of Virginia laws, between Purvis's Collection (1682) and the Williamsburg edition of 1733. Hening alludes to the fact that thousands of the descendants of Indians had been made Slaves, under a decision of the supreme court of Virginia, in the belief that an Act of 1691, 'For a Free Trade with Indians,' - which he printed from a manuscript copy - was not passed before 1705. It is found, in its proper place, with the Acts of 1691, in this volume (p. 160)." The Brinley copy brought $25 in 1880. Not in Evans. SABIN 100383. SWEM 22502. BRINLEY 3692.

GIBRALTAR: DAS VON DENEN SPANIERN IN ANNO 1727. BELAGERTE GIBRALTAR.

      - This very rare view depicts ‘The Rock’ during the Siege of Gibraltar of 1727, when Spanish forces unsuccessfully attempted to take the British enclave. The view is highly stylized for artistic effect and shows the peninsula from a westerly perspective, while Spanish forces bombard the town from the north and ships of the Armada Real, plying the bay, attempt to enforce a maritime blockade. A key in the lower corner identifies 8 principal sites; including A. the Town of Gibraltar; B. the Castle; C. the Fortifications around the Harbour; D. the Harbour; E. the Road up to the Castle; F. the Hinterland of Gibraltar; G. the Spanish positions at La Línea de la Concepción; and H. the Lighthouse. In 1704, the Britain’s Royal Navy seized Gibraltar and peninsula was subsequently heavily fortified as a key British base guarding the mouth of the Mediterranean. Spain found the seizure of what was traditionally a part of its metropolitan territory absolutely intolerable and vowed to take it back. In 1727, during the Anglo-Spanish War (1727-29), Spanish forces besieged Gibraltar, in a blockade that lasted from February 11 to June 12 of that year. At its height over 25,000 Spanish troops squared off against a British garrison that never numbered more than 5,000 men. The bravery and resilience of the British garrison, under Sir Charles Wager, won the day and the exhausted Spaniards called off the siege. The Rock has remained British territory ever since, although it would have to endure the much more challenging Great Siege of Gibraltar, which lasted from 1779 to 1783. The present view is very rare and highly unusual. It is the only example of which we are aware as having been offered on the market during the last 25 years. It was devised by the Augsburg publisher Gabriel Bodenehr the Younger (1664 – 1758), the scion of a great publishing family. Extraordinarily the view is printed from two plates (respectively forming the upper and lower part of the view). The lower scene is a conventional view of the siege, while the upper part, featuring a roundel baring the portrait of King George I of Britain (reigned 1714 -1727), is surrounded by an elaborate Baroque tableau, and which seems to have been borrowed by Bodenehr from a plate designed by the late French engraver Sébastien Pontault de Beaulieu (c. 1612 - 74), although the portrait of George I was obviously added by Bodenehr.
