1727. Arnedo de Marín was the accountant of the Inquisition in Mexico and the collection agent of the Conde de la Enjarada. He here gives the required accounting of income and expenses of the encomienda of the Conde de la Enjarada, Bernardino Carvajal Monctezuma y Vivero, and the collection of the share due to the Crown and now in the coffers of the Holy Office awaiting shipment on the Serrano fleet. The encomienda in question was located in regions of Metepeque and Tacuba. Even as late as the 1720s the encomienda seems to have been generating at least 4000 pesos per annum for the conde. His bloodline included as ancestors both Tezozomoc and Moctezeuma II. Provenance: Maggs, Bibliotheca Americana, part IV, 2912.

Bowyer, for the Editor, MDCCXXVII [1727] First edition of the third English version of Castiglione's classic treatise on etiquette, the most celebrated instruction manual on the courtly manners of the Italian High Renaissance. 4to: [62],480,473-508pp [470, 471 misnumbered 471, 470 respectively; 473-79 repeated but text continuous and complete], with fine copper-engraved frontispiece by Vertue after the portrait by Raphael and parallel texts in Italian and English. Bowyer ledgers 1296 (showing "printing on three sizes of paper: 970 copies on demy, 24 on royal, 7 on writing royal"). PMM 59 (Venice, 1528). Fine ¶ First printed in Venice by Aldus, in 1528, and reprinted innumerable times since in every major European language. The earliest version in English, that of Sir Thomas Hoby, appeared in 1561; the second, by Robert Samber, in 1724. Castiglione's Il libro del cortegiano (The Book of the Courtier) "is a classic of Western literature: a conduct book describing the ideal courtier of the Renaissance (and to some degree the ideal court lady too); it is also a highly polished literary dialogue rich in classical lore and representative of the avant-garde culture of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italy. Responsible for transmitting fundamental cultural ideas abroad, among them the notion of the all-rounded, or 'Renaissance', man or woman, the stress on grace and elegance as part of the striving for perfection, and the details of the Neoplatonic love-theory then in vogue; it is also credited with having given rise in France to the concept of the gentilhomme and in England to that of the gentleman. . . . Interwoven into the fabric of the text is a wide spectrum of topics ranging from a theory of humor to an ethically grounded view of politics. . . . Truly encyclopedic in scope, The Book of the Courtier has been hailed as a veritable compendium of Renaissance culture." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B.         Les Voyages de Cyrus, avec un Discours sur la Mythologie.

Paris: Gabriel-Francois Quillau, 1727. Two volumes bound in one, small octavo, contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt. First edition of this influential description of an ideal kingdom, populated with figures from classical Greece.Ramsay was born in Ayr, Scotland in 1686, the son of a baker. As a young man he fought with the English in the war of the Spanish Succession, and while on the Continent sought to reconcile his religious qualms by journeying to see the renowned French divine, Fénelon. Deeply moved, he converted to Catholicism and remained with Fénelon until the mystic's death in 1715. Ramsay continued devoted, writing a life in 1723. He also became a tutor to the two sons of the Pretender, and continued to write philosophical tracts addressed to his pupils. The Voyages de Cyrus, his best known work, consciously imitates Fénelon's Adventures of Telemachus by integrating figures of classical Greek mythology into an ideal kingdom. Here, Cyrus journeys through the ancient world, continually appraising his own society. Although the work was widely reissued and enormously popular in the eighteenth century, it is not often discussed in the secondary works. Thus, Gove shows an awareness of the work and its debt to Fénelon, but contents himself with the grumpy assertion that it is merely an 'educational romance'. Small wormhole near the gutter of the opening pages but a very good copy.

None of the Honeyman, Freilich or Macclesfield copies comprised all three parts. As normal, there is no plate 11 in the second part. "Important work on mineralogy and mining; it contains two extensive sections on the mines of North and South America, with an early reference to the discovery of gold in California. Brückmann has written this work based on studies in the mining regions of Germany and Hungary and a rich knowledge of the entire mining literature. He treats the mines of all European countries, as well as Africa, Asia and America (e.g. gold washing, silver mines in Potosi, each with ills.). There are also short sections on Brazilian mines in both volumes. The supplement exclusively treats Swedish mining. Beside minerals, the plates show numerous plans of mines as well as views of mining towns in the Hartz region (e.g. Goslar, Sankt Andreasberg, Claustal etc). Franz Brückmann practised medicine in Weferlingen while also devoting himself to his interests in the natural sciences. He then moved his practice to Braunschweig and later came into a considerable inheritance, after which he travelled and became interested in minerals, fossils, and geology. In 1725 he returned to Braunschweig and from 1728 on he lived in Wolfenbüttel where his association with the Duke of Brunswick additionally afforded him the opportunity to practice medicine and author many scientific books and articles on the natural sciences. - Tl. II wie in sämtl. Hales applied his training in biology and mathematics (including physics) to make important scientific investigations presented in these separately published volumes. The first volume, Vegetable staticks, Hales describes his investigations of plant physiology, including the movement of water in plants and determining the three factors of water movement: root suction, root pressure and leaf suction. He also established that plants lose water continuously during transpiration through leaves. His quantitative measurements of these phenomena enabled him to show the rate of transpiration varied with temperature. Hales established that plants do not have true circulation system, and developed techniques of measuring the varying growth rates in different plant structures. -- The second volume, or Haemastaticks, 'contains the studies on blood pressure which make Hales one of the founders of modern experimental physiology. The application of the principle of the pressure-gauge or manometer enabled him to measure blood pressure during the contraction of the heart. He computed the circulation rate and estimated the velocity of the blood in the veins, arteries and capillary vessels and by showing that the capillary vessels are liable to constriction and dilation he made an important contribution both to the study of physiology and the practice of the physician of today ... Hales's work marked the greatest advance in the physiology of the circulation between Harvey and the introduction of the mercury manometer and other instruments for the measurement of blood pressure by J.L.M. Poiseuille in 1828' (PMM). Very Good.

Nor was circulation of Gibson's work limited to Great Britain and the continent: in a list of supplies ordered from England in 1759 for his Virginia farm, George Washington specified 'Gibson on the Horse' along with 40 shilling's worth of medicines (see J. Bound in early (possibly contemporary) quarter sheep with marbled boards, rubbed along spine and corners; red morocco lettering piece, chipped but clearly legible; all edges marbled. Bookplate of Buddle Atkinson to front paste down. A sturdy, unsophisticated copy, frontispiece slightly foxed along folds, sporadic light soiling and browning, otherwise clean and bright. ESTC Citation No. T116211. Lowndes 526. Bindley pt. vi, 1039. Very Good Fourth Edition (reissue, with altered title page, of sheets from third edition). Full of fascinating information relating to the etiquette and procedure of royal ceremonies. Buddle Atkinson's bookplate appears in Hugo's Catalogue of Thomas Bewick's works, but it is, in fact, engraved on steel, not wood, and came from the workshop of Mark Lambert, one of Bewick's pupils. The plate was designed and engraved by George F. Robinson, who joined Lambert's workshop in 1841 and who, in the course of 50 years, became chief engraver and director of all art works carried out by the firm. The plate was produced when Atkinson (b.1841) was a young child, perhaps for putting in books that had been owned by his father, John Buddle, so it likely dates from 1845-1850. N. B. The first volume covers the period from the founding of the Society of Jesus (1541) until 1590; The second from 1591 until 1600. The work is important because it is based on documents - the archives of the Jesuit houses concerned - which are now missing. Rare first and only edition of an exceptionally beautiful model book for painting, colouring and embroidery, mainly of flowers and fruits, designed by a painter from the famous Saxon porcelain factory at Meissen. The title-page merely calls him "Lück", but he must be either Johann Heinrich Lück (1727-1797), one of the most famous Meissen porcelain painters, or (since it does not indicate that he had recently died) possibly a son. The booklet accompanying the prints includes 11 pages of instructions and advice, and a numbered list of the 66 pigments used for the colour key.The prospectus includes a numbered list of the flower plates (and notes the colour key), a French poem by De Lille (both also present in the album itself), and a letter by the publisher addressed to "Nederlandsche Juffers" (Dutch young ladies), especially recommending Lück's models for their "creations with brush and needle". If accepted gratefully, the publisher would consider a second volume as well, but none appeared. We have located only one other copy (at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam). In fine condition.

Engraved vignette on title, folding map, & 60 engraved plates. Title-page printed in red and black, 7 p.l., 420 pp.; 1 p.l., 421-630 pp., [27] leaves. Two vols. in one. Thick 8vo, cont. speckled sheep, spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Leiden: J. van Abcoude, 1727. First edition in French (1st ed., in German: 1718), of this richly illustrated and scarce book; it is one of the best guides to Paris of the early 18th century. Nemeitz (1679-1753), a German scholar who traveled widely in Europe, served as a tutor for various members of the Italian and French nobility. Due to his profession, Nemeitz was familiar with many of the great cities of the Continent, where he sought out lesser-known "curiosities" as well as the standard sights. Following a two-year residence in Paris, he wrote the present work as a detailed guide. Not only does he provide "touristic" suggestions to go to gardens and cathedrals, he also instructs the reader on the skills necessary to ingratiate oneself with Parisian high society - fluency in German, French and Latin is essential, as well as a wide-ranging knowledge. The present work also contains profiles of prominent aristocrats and public figures such as Louis XV, the Duke of Orléans, the Prince of Condé, and the Archbishop of Paris. This book offers a rich perspective on the life of the upper-class in early 18th-century Paris with chapters discussing: "how one must dress," "conversation with the fairer sex," "coffee shops," "visiting public and private libraries," "necessary expenses," "preservation of health," and "in what season and what way one must see the royal chateaux around Paris." The 60 engraved plates depict the most famous buildings in Paris and its environs, accompanied by histories and architectural descriptions. Nice copy. This was a rather popular work which underwent several editions in both German and French. Unidentified 19th-century bookplate on front paste-down and early 20th-century engraved bookplate on verso of title. ? N.B.G., Vol. 37, cols. 649-50.

CHINA, TAIWAN, KOREA AND JAPAN: A MAP OF THE SEA COASTS OF CHINA FROM TONQUIN TO COREA, ALSO OF THE ISLANDS OF JAPON.

Edinburgh 1727 - Copper engraving on fine watermarked paper (Very Good, old soft folds, barely noticeable small hairline tear just entering map at left-hand border, lower left-hand blank margin professionally instated to fill former binding gap), 33 x 39.5 cm. A rare and unusual map of coastal China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan made by the Scottish adventurer and privateer Alexander Hamilton. This rare and curious map of coastal China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan was made by Alexander Hamilton, a larger-than-life Scottish adventurer, privateer and pirate-hunter, who spent 35-years in Asian waters as an affiliate of the English East India Company (EIC). The map is of a very unusual style that was seemingly influenced by the sea charts made by the ‘Thames School’ of cartographers in London who operated in the second half of the 17th Century and were closely associate with the EIC (as a long time EIC affiliate Hamilton was almost certainly familiar with their work). The coastlines are delineated in a somewhat stylized manner, with major ports and cities of interest labelled, while the interior is mostly left intentionally blank. The large quarter compass rose is a signature feature of manuscript sea charts, such as those done by the Thames School. China’s coasts are shown from southern Guangdong, labelled here as ‘Quantung’, northwards, with the ‘Canton R.’ and ‘Maccoa’ (Macao) labelled, along with the old Portuguese names for various coastal features. Further north, is Fujian, labelled here as ‘Foquin’, which features the port of ‘Amoy’. Further north still, is labelled ‘Chequian’ (Zhejiang) with ‘Limpo’ (Ningbo) and ‘Xantung’ (Shandong), while ‘Nankin’ (Nanking) appears in the interior. Taiwan is labelled a ‘Formosa I’, while the city of Taoyuan is labelled as ‘Teywan’. Korea is shown in partial outline, seemingly as a peninsula, and is labelled as ‘Corea unknown’. Indeed, during this period the Joseon Dynasty of Korea absolutely forbade Westerners from visiting their country, making it one of the last major coastal nations to remain an almost complete enigma to Europeans. Turing to Japan, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu are easily identifiable to the modern observer, although Hamilton makes a mistake common to many contemporary Westerners in misidentifying Kyushu as ‘Chicoco’ (Shikoku, which is here labelled as ‘Tonsa’). Major cities are labelled, such as ‘Nanguesaak’ (Nagasaki), ‘Osacca’ (Osaka) and, of course ‘Jedo’ (Yedo, modern Tokyo), which is pictographically represented. Hokkaido is partially depicted, far distant from the northern tip of Honshu and is labelled as ‘The Coast of Eso unknown’. Captain Alexander Hamilton (fl. 1688 - 1733) was a Scottish adventurer, merchant, privateer and pirate-hunter. He spent the years 1688 to 1723 largely based out of India, but often sailing throughout the Indian Ocean, Southeast and East Asia. The present map appeared in the first edition of his highly entertaining and informative memoir of his time in Asia, written while he was in retirement in Scotland, A New Account of the East Indies: being the observations and remarks of Capt. Alexander Hamilton, who spent his time there from the year 1688 to 1723, trading and travelling, by sea and land, to most of the countries and islands of commerce and navigation, between the cape of Good-hope, and the island of Japon, 2 vols. (Edinburgh, J. Mosman, 1727). In his book, Hamilton recounts his early years as privateer off of the Barbary Coast and the West Indies. In 1688, he arrived to Bombay, then the main British base in India, and indeed all of Asia. He was briefly pressed into military service by the EIC during Child’s War (1686-90), the Company’s ill-fated contest against the Mughal Empire. After that, he went out on his own as a free agent merchant mariner and privateer, scouring the seas for opportunities, based out of the port of Surat (Gujarat). He made frequent trips to Southeast and East Asia and traded out of Canton, China, sailing as far as Nagasaki, Japan. Th

        Lettre critique

Garrison & Morton 302. Ouvrage très rare
