The Life of Sir Thomas More Kt. Lord High Chancellor of England Under K. Henry the Eighth ... by His Great Grandson

London: Printed for James Woodmand and David Lyon, 1726. Printed with very wide margins. full blue morocco, extra gilt, double ruled border on covers with central French fillet panel and large oblique foliate cornerpieces, raised bands, spine compartments densley and beautifully gilt with semicircles formed by stippled rules arching down from the top and up from the bottom, etc., inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, by Rivière. Pristine internally, very light wear to edges, else fine. Octavo. xxxi, [1], 336, [15] pp Illustrated with engraved frontispiece of Thomas Moore, woodcut tailpiece at end of text With circular morocco bookplate of Dudley C. Marjoribanks and with bookplate of H. Harvey Frost The author of Utopia and one of the major figures of his time, Thomas More (1478-1535) served Henry VIII as chancellor. A friend of Erasmus and a believer in church reform, More disagreed with Henry’s severance of ties with the Catholic Church, and was executed for his refusal to acknowlede Henry as Supreme Head of the Church of England. Our preface tells us that Thomas More, the great-grandson of Sir Thomas, was the author this work and that the first edition of it was published within two years fo the author’s death. But Lowndes correctly points out that in our edition, as in the first printing of 1631, this work is “assigned to a member of the family of More who could not have been the writer of it”. The book is actually the work of Cresacre More (1572-1649), younger brother of Sir Thomas [the younger Sir Thomas]. An arden Catholic, Cresacre dedicated his work to the French queen of Charles I, Marie Henriette. The biography, which includes a number of letters written by More to his family, has always been considered a principal source for More’s career[Lowndes II, 1603 (citing the 1828 edition)].

Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World

London: Benj[amin] Motte,, 1726. In four parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, first a surgeon, and then a captain of several ships. 2 volumes, octavo (184 x 114 mm). Skilfully rebound to style with contemporary sprinkled calf boards, red morocco labels to spine lettered gilt, gilt raised bands and decoration to spine, gilt rules to covers, gilt roll to board edges, all edges gilt. Frontispiece portrait of Gulliver (second state, as called for), 4 maps and 2 plans. Faint ownership inscription to foot of p. 163. Some occasional spots to contents, Vol. I with small repair to foot of half-title, and foot of p. 55, worming to last few pages of volume I in margin neatly repaired and not affecting text. An excellent set, attractively bound. First edition, Teerink's A edition with all the necessary points to distinguish it from the two later printings (Teerink AA and B) also dated 1726. Teerink's A was published on 28 October, AA some time in the middle of November, and the B edition in December. The first five editions of Gulliver's Travels (three octavo editions in 1726, one octavo and one duodecimo edition in 1727) were all published by Benjamin Motte. "The clandestine business of getting into print a pseudonymous and satirically explosive political satire entitled Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World (known from the start by its more popular title, Gulliver's Travels) was managed chiefly by Pope, with the assistance of John Gay and Erasmus Lewis. For speed, and to counter the risk of piracy, Motte used five printing houses (those of Edward Say, Henry Woodfall, James Bettenham, William Pearson, and, for the greatest share, that of Jane Ilive). The first edition appeared on 28 October 1726 in two octavo volumes at the price of 8s. 6d., but with unauthorized deletions and insertions by Andrew Tooke (the brother of Benjamin Tooke jun.), and sold out within a week. Gay wrote: 'From the highest to the lowest it is universally read, from the Cabinet-council to the Nursery' ? Motte followed up with two more octavo editions in 1726 and a duodecimo in 1727, and there was a serialized version which began in the Penny Post (25 November 1726). There were two Dublin editions before the end of 1726, each set up from Motte's first edition... The book sold well in French: the first complete translation appeared at The Hague in January 1727, and an abridged adaptation by the Abbé Desfontaines in Paris in April ? Swift received from Motte £200 and possibly more from the sales of the book, largely due to Pope's effort at instilling into his friend the principles of 'prudent management' ? Gulliver's Travels is the book by which Swift is chiefly remembered, and it is the record of his own experience in politics under Queen Anne as an Irishman in what G. B. Shaw called 'John Bull's other island'" (ODNB).

Patrick Lamb (c.1650-1708/9), Royal Cook. Lamb served in the royal household for more than 40 years, and was responsible as Master Cook for the preparation of several monarchs' ordinary and extraordinary meals from 1683 until his retirement during the 1700s, including elaborate coronation feasts for James II, William and Mary and Anne. First published 1710 and featuring recipes for elaborate and prestigious meals alongside descriptions of the fashionable modes of serving and place-setting, the second edition is greatly expanded with the addition of 'above five Hundred new Receipts'. As well as the very substantial increase in the number of recipes in the 1716 edition, the number of plates was also increased to 40 from the original 35 for the second edition. This third edition includes the same 40 engravings, but was, somewhat ironically given the presence of this book in the library of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792) aimed at a wider audience; not merely 'calculated only for the Kitchens of Princes and Great men' but slightly extended by a number 'of new Receipts, which not being so expensive as the others, may be useful in those of private Gentleman. ESTC T92201. Oxford p52, Bitting p271 (both citing 1st ed., 1710). . Third edition. 8vo.

        The artificer's looking-glass:

8vo., in half-sheets, (8) 62pp., without the advertisement leaf, upper margins cropped up to p.24 with loss or partial loss of several page numbers (but in no case affecting the text), bound in early 20th century black half roan over marbled boards, neatly rebacked to match, spine gilt lettered. Sometime in the library of The Surveyors' Institution with its 1908 bookplate on front pastedown but with no other obvious marks of ownership. This seems to be a graphic portrait of London tradesmen, their grievances and temptations, written, from a moral point of view, as if it was a confession to "Mother Art" herself. The grievances are, of course, about wages and working conditions, the temptations (by which so many tradesmen are ruined) including drink, sex, gambling and debt. "The intention of this treatise", writes the author, "is to paint virtue and vice in their proper colours and distinct lights". It is relevant also to note that Chester Noyes Greenough consulted this book, but rejected it for not matching his criteria, in his Bibliography of the Theophrastan character in English. (p.189).

A playne and godly Exposytion or Declaration of the Commune Crede (Which in the Latin tonge is called Symbolum Apostolorum) And of the .x. Commaundements of goddes law

N.P. 1726 - A little catechism of Erasmus on the Apostle's Creed and the Ten Commandments, requested by Sir Thomas Boleyn, father of Anne Boleyn's, and first published in March of 1533 in Basel under the title: Dilucida et pia explanatio symboli quod apostolorum. Explanatio symboli apostolorum. The book was then "quickly submitted to Cranmer and translated into English by William Marshall, a Lutheran lawyer was also published an English version of Marsilius of Padua's Defensor pacis (1533) and Lorenzo Valla's Donation of Constantine (1534) as part of a print campaign to support the supremacy. Yet Erasmus' writings, indeed the doctrine described in the Explanatio symboli itself, still had the potential to speak to traditionalists, including men like the king's cousin, the theologian Reginald Pole (1500-1558), whom the regime wanted to win over." (Pollnitz, Aysha. Princely Education in Modern Britain). The book offered here is an 18th century reprint of the original 1533 English translation, done in Roman rather than the original Gothic type. Very rare. We could locate only four copies worldwide. The publication date was probably sometime between 1720-1730. 8vo (20 x 13cm), 187 (i.e. 178) leaves. "H.M." inscribed on title-page. A very good clean copy. Bound in later half calf over marbled boards, rubbed.

; Johannes Veldius sculp. ; R.& I.Ottens Excud.

A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD BY WAY OF THE GREAT SOUTH SEA, PERFORM'D IN THE YEARS 1719, 20, 21, 22...

London, 1726. Contemporary dark brown calf, gilt, expertly rebacked with original label preserved. Very good and clean. First edition of "the fullest account of California, the natives and other features, of any of the old voyages" (Cowan). Shelvocke was engaged in a privateering expedition against Spanish shipping on the Pacific Coast of America. He sailed as far north as Baja California, and two of the plates depict Indians of Baja. He also reported gold in the region. The folding map depicts the world in two hemispheres with the route of the voyage traced. An important English Pacific voyage. "Captains Shelvocke and Clipperton led a privately financed privateering expedition to attack Spanish shipping. Shelvocke gave his superior officer the slip in a storm and proceeded to Brazil and thence to the west coast of South America, where in two months he sacked Payta, Peru, and captured several small prizes. His vessel, the Speedwell, was wrecked at Juan Fernandez Island, but a ship was built out of the wreckage, and he sailed up the coast to Baja California. After crossing the Pacific via Guam and Macao, Shelvocke returned to England, where he was accused of piracy and embezzlement, and then acquitted. He soon left for the Continent a wealthy man. Shelvocke wrote this account, in part, as a vindication of his conduct. In it he mentions the gold of California and the guano of Peru, more than a hundred years before their rediscovery in the 19th century. An incident in the narrative describing the passage around Cape Horn, in which a sailor kills an albatross, is said to have inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner" - Hill. HILL 1557.         A compleat body of divinity in two hundred and fifty expository lectures on the Assembly's shorter catechism wherein the doctrines of the Christian religion are unfolded ... and a great light thereby reflected on the present age.

Boston: Pr. by B. Green & S. Kneeland for B. Eliot & D. Henchman Folio (35 cm, 13.75"). [2], iv, 3, [3], 666, 581–914, [2] pp. (pagination erratic, skips 160–76); complete as issued.. 1726 First edition of the Rev. Willard's collected sermons on the Westminster Shorter Catechism, originally delivered as monthly lectures over 20 years' time. This posthumously printed volume opens with an account of the author, written by the Rev. Ebenezer Pemberton; Willard, one of the last of the great orthodox Puritan preachers of New England, was a clergyman noted for his => opposition to the Salem witchcraft trials and for serving as => acting president of Harvard between the tenures of Increase Mather and John Leverett. Evans notes that this is "the first folio volume, other than Laws, and => the largest work up to this time printed in the United States." This was a subscription printing, and includes Benjamin Franklin's father and brother, among other dignitaries, in its list of names; the sheets came from several different presses, and thus "it has fallen out . . . that the Pages for a considerable way, are numbered over again" (p. 666). The title-page is printed in red and black. The binding features => a very unusual 18th-century repair job: to reinforce the joints, an early hand stitched along either side of the front joint and part way down the back. Provenance: Title-page with inked ownership inscription of T. White, dated 1726, and with inked presentation inscription to Susanna White, dated 1782. Front pastedown with inked inscription of Timothy Badger, 1782; also with 19th-century institutional bookplate and presentation inscription. Contemporary mottled sheep framed and panelled in blind fillets with corner fleurons, a blind roll around the central panel; small scuffs, extremities rubbed, joints cracked and fragile, with early sewn repairs as above. Front free endpaper partially separated. Inscriptions as above; preface with additional early inked inscription in upper margin and inked numeral in lower margin, a very slim "mag strip" in one gutter margin and no other institutional markings. Pages age-toned and offset with varying degrees of spotting and staining; some corners dog-eared. Three leaves each with short tear from upper margin, just touching text without loss; a few leaves crumpled without tearing. First portion of volume with intermittent early inked marginalia, one note partially shaved. A milestone of early American printing and an interesting copy.

[2], 54 [i.e., 53] ff.. 1726 The third edition of this => uncommon and significant work on the language of the Aztecs, the first having appeared in 1689 and a second in 1693. A third edition of 1716 is listed in several bibliographies, but it is a ghost: The "2" in the date of this 1726 edition is often indistinct on the title-page, causing some to read it as "1716." Vázquez, a native of Puebla, was a professor of the "Mexican language" (i.e., Nahuatl) at the Royal College of San Juan and San Pedro; his local "take" is discernable here. 20th-century vellum over boards, vellum a little sprung and lightly soiled. Some upper and lower margins closely trimmed costing catchwords, signature signs, or portions of folio numbers, and just touching the base of one very large handsome tailpiece. Small ownership stamp in lower margin of verso of title. In all, a good copy of a difficult to obtain indigenous language book.
