        The Life of Cardinal Wolsey

London: Printed for John Barber, 1724. First edition. Cloth. A very good or better copy, modern rebinding, leaves very bright, small chip to lower margin of frontis else plates sharp and clean, overall contents near fine. Folio. Illus. with seven copper plate engravings and one in-text engraving. With a list of subscribers. Illustrations include portrait frontispieces of Fiddes, portrait of Wolsey, the Magdalen College Tower; two further portraits: of Bishop Tunstall and Bishop Fox, the House Of Lords; Christ Church College, Oxford (dbl. page); two views of Christ Church interiors; plus in-text engraving of coins. In this work, Fiddes ... "it attempted to vindicate Wolsey's memory from the obloquy which had persistently pursued it, and also that it took a view of the Reformation less unfavourable to the mediaeval church than that of most Protestant writers. Fiddes was immediately attacked both by the press and in the pulpit. He had been faithful to the Earl of Oxford after his fall, and had frequently visited him in prison; further, in the preface to the ' Life of Wolsey,' he said that Atterbury had offered him the opportunity of writing it in his house, and he paid a warm tribute to Atterbury's abilities. It therefore suited Atterbury's assailants to accuse Fiddes of popery, and represent him as employed by Atterbury to write his work," DNB XIX, 398. ESTC T76228. Lowndes 796.

Par J. F. Ostervald.

With 2 engraved titlevignettes and 2 large engraved head-pieces. Contemporary full calf over wooden boards. With 1 of 2 clasps. Spine richly gilt. The corners of binding are neatly repaired. Headband somewhat worn.. French Geneva version, slightly revised and annotated by the swiss theologian Jéan Frederic Ostervald (1663-1747).He attained a position of such influence that he and his friends J. A. Turretin of Geneva and S. Werenfels of Basel were known as the 'Swiss triumvirate'. His writing won great popularity among French protestants, and were translated into various languages. Before 1723 Ostervald's 'Arguments et Réflexions' had existed only in manuscript, and in an English translation which had been printed in 1716 at the request of his London friends and under the auspices of the Archbishop af Canterbury. The succes obtained by this English book made the Amsterdam printers demand the author's leave to publish the French original. They obtained his permission only by threatening otherwise to have the English version retranslated into French. These 'Arguments et Réflexions' appeared separately in 1723 and again in 1724, accompanying the text of the French Geneva version, which was slightly revised by Ostervald. The 'Reflections' are printed at the end of each chapter. Darlow & Moule 3793

Bishop Burnet's History Of His Own Time, 2 Volumes

Thomas ward/Joseph downing/Henry Woodfall, London, 1724, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good-, Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine, 1st EditionSize: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall, The restoration looks superb to my untutored eye. The books measure 14" x 9", collation is folio. The previous owners notes read , "1/2 morocco." The style is spine and tips(diagonally) done in leather, balance in marbled green/tan paper, pastedowns and endsheets are heavy cream tone stock. Printing data on volume 1 "Printed for Thomas Ward in the Inner-Temple lane-1724." the collector has penciled, on the first pastedown, "2 vols, first edition, RCTY" (sic). Book commences with title page, verso blank, 1 page advertisement to reader, verso blank, 5 leaves(10pages) of subscriber names, followed by a TOC numbered from 827 to 836. Following this the actual text begins at page 1 with a 4 page preface followed by text numbered to 826. After this 10 leaves(20 pages) of index, last of which is a "Proposal" advertisement. Reviewing the text for flaws beyond the customary waviness and age darkening, some light staining of text upper areas is noted at 1st page of TOC, some smudge elsewhere noted, no noting in text seen (excepting old owner name under title title page) wonderfully legible, no dog ear seen.Volume 2 printing data, "Printed for the editor by Joseph Downing in Bartholomew-Close and Henry Woodfall in the Strand-1734." After replaced endsheets, title page, Verso has penned note "The original manuscript of both volumes of this history will be deposited in the Cotton library by T. Burnet" boxed in double red lines. After this come a 10 leaf(20 page) subscriber list. Following comes TOC of the 2nd volume numbered 729 to 740. Actual text commences running page 1 (no number) thru 764 pages including a long index.Reviewing the text, the first 40 pages or so have large but mild ancient stain at upper area. The entirity of the upper text is also affected, same, but more mildly so. This darkens again at the end of the work. A similar stain affects the lower back pages. Also the piece has more fleck, smudge and corrected dog era than its brother, yet, spendid in its considerable age. Both items text edges have much edge darkening but a clean, unsmudged appearance.Looking at the exteriors they seem fine, excepting volume one which has 2 tiny imperfections where the paper meets the spine leather. one is a tiny chip out, pencil eraser size, and a tiny upper area ripple. Volume II has variegation of leather color on spine, suspect this is as the leather/cow was made.Books will weigh around 18 lbs for shipping, we will pay 1/2 of domestic media mail shipping and provide insurance and delivery confirmation at our expense, as we do with all expensive items. Leichte Gebrauchsspuren. Etw. bestoß. Zwei Ecken etw. beschädigt.. Christian Zickermann (27. Delle Novelle Di Franco Sacchetti (2 Volumes in one)

Firenze (Florence), 1724. Three Quarters Vellum. Fine. Book. (8) + 49 + 240 + 230 + (18) pp. Collection of 258 stories from Medieval Italy. Stories vary from being mere anecdotes, jokes, arguments and rebuttals, playlets to short stories along the lines of Boccaccio, who was roughly his contemporary (about 15 years older). De Sanctis, the seminal critic of Italian literature, considered Sacchetti "the true echo of his time," which was not necessarily meant as flattery. The contemporary vellum and red title label on the spine have minor soilage. The binding is tight, and the leaves generally clean, with minimal soilage. Overall, near fine or fine.

        Nova Anglia Septentrionali Americae implantata.

Nuremberg 1724 - Fine original wash color; a crease, few faint stains, else excellent. An excellent, original-colored example of one of the few collectible maps of the Northeast of the early 18th century. This attractive work is an interesting blend of older, Dutch sources and more recent English ones. The map shows that as the number of English settlements increased in the area, Native American tribal names are notably less plentiful than on Dutch maps of the previous century. Nonetheless, the attractive cartouche shows a European bartering with an Indian for an animal pelt, one of the mainstays of the early New England economy. The cartouche also reveals what the European was offering for trade, including beads, a barrel (presumably filled with liquor), guns, hatchets, tools, and textiles. The cartography of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket is still quite distorted, but the coast of Maine is well detailed. Curiously, the map shows a strait in Cape Cod connecting Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound in the area of Eastham and Wellfleet. Historical accounts and early maps and charts indicate that there existed a water passage in this area from the mid-17th to the first part of the 18th century. New Jersey is divided into East and West Jersey on the map. McKorkle, B. New England in Early Printed Maps, Map 724.1.

Three uncommon works by Daniel Turner, a London-based physician, and member of the Barber-Surgeons' Company and the College of Physicians. He published numerous works on the diseases of the skin, venereal diseases, and surgical practice, many of which include important records of specific cases. In The Force of the Mother's Imagination upon her Foetus in Utero Turner argued against the current popular belief in the occurrence of maternal impressions, invariably negative, on the unborn child.
