Capolettera e testate in xilografia. Perfetta legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida, dorsi a piccoli nervi con titoli in oro su tasselli. Tagli spruzzati. Observationes anatomicae

Giovanni Battista Recurti, Venice 1724 - First edition, with three engraved folding plates, of Santorini's most important contribution to medical science, containing the "major discoveries for which Santorini is known eponymically" (Garrison-Morton). The text is accompanied by three folding copperplates which beautifully illustrate the musculature of the face, the pelvic musculature and genitalia of a sixteen-year-old girl with a tubal pregnacy, the external muscles of the ear, and detailed anatomy of the male genitalia and larynx" (Heirs of Hippocrates).         Obeliscus Flaminus (Rome, Italy)

The Hague, Rutgert Christophle Alberts 1724 - Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) Illustrated plate from Nourveau Theatre d’Italie, our Dexcription Exacte de ses Villes, Palais, Eglises, Principaux Edifices, etc. (New Theater of Italy, or Description of its Towns, Palaces, Churches, Principal Buildings, etc.) The Hague, Rutgert Christophle Alberts: 1724 Hand-colored copperplate engraving Plate size: 28” x 24 1/2” Arguably the most celebrated mapmaker and draftsman of the 17th century, Joan Blaeu was responsible for the splendid 11-volume Atlas Maior, published in Amsterdam in 1662. The Atlas Maior was such a symbol of status that it became the traditional state gift presented by the Dutch government, its prestige derived mainly from the remarkable standards of production involved. After the completion of the atlas, Blaeu turned his attention and considerable drawing talents to an equally sumptuous publication, this time devoted to views of Italian cities and monuments. For quality of draftsmanship, evgraving, beauty of ornament, typography and quality of paper, these images have never been equaled, with the possible exception of Piranesi’s views of Rome. Each is depicted with extreme technical precision, with great esthetic conern for composition. The engravings from Blaeu’s Theatre d’Italie illustrate the highest standard of accuracy and beauty, bearing witness to the excellent craftsmanship of engraver, printer and papermaker in Northern Europe during the Baroque era.

Description de l'isle des hermaphrodites.

(8) 352pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Moeurs des Sauvages Ameriquains, comparées aux moeurs des premiers temps

Paris: Saugrain and Hochereau, 1724. Two volumes, quarto, with 42 engraved plates and a map; contemporary French calf, joints repaired. In the beginning all the World was America. First edition: pioneering anthropology based on direct observations made by Lafitau over six years in Canada, particularly of the Iroquois people. Lafitau's study influenced, among others, Rousseau and Chateaubriand, and drew the vituperation of Voltaire. Lafitau, a Jesuit priest, spent the years 1712-1718 in Canada, at least part of the time living among the Iroquois. 'In his endeavour to prove American aborigines were of Tartar stock, he prepared an encyclopaedic work describing in great detail and accuracy their customs, religions, beliefs and social organisation' (TPL). The social scientists of the Enlightenment saw Lafitau's book as 'a convincing demonstration of the fact that contemporary American society could be regarded as a kind of living model… of human society in the 'first' or 'earliest' stage of its development. Lafitau, in other words, had in their view vindicated the hypothesis that in the beginning all the World was America…' (R.L. Meek, Social Science and the Ignoble Savage, 1976; p. 57).

        Observationes anatomicae

Venice: apud Jo. Baptistam Recurti, 1724. Venice: apud Jo. Baptistam Recurti, 1724. <p>Heavily Annotated by an 18th-Century Medical Scholar </p><p>Santorini, Giovanni Domenico (1681-1737). Observationes anatomicae. 4to. [12], 250 [i.e., 252]pp. 3 folding engraved plates, the second plate signed by the artist Marcus Galli and the engraver Carlo Orsolini (ca. 1710-ca. 1780). Venice: Giovanni Battista Recurti, 1724. 286 x 208 mm. (uncut). Original carta rustica boards, spine repaired, slight wear. Minor dampstain in upper margins of plates and last approx. 15 leaves, otherwise very good to fine. Extensive scholarly annotations in a legible and attractive 18th-century hand in the margins of several leaves; note on Santorini&#146;s death in the same hand on the front pastedown. </p><p>First Edition. &#147;Santorini was generally acknowledged as the outstanding anatomist of his time, carefully dissecting and delineating many difficult and complex gross features of the human body, such as facial muscles involved in emotional expression, accessory pancreatic ducts, and duodenal papillae. His name has been given to some of these structures, such as the arytenoid cartilages (1724), the risorius muscle, and the plexus pudendalis venosus . . . His most important work was Observationes anatomicae, a valuable exposition of details of human anatomy&#148; (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The four major anatomical discoveries for which Santorini is known eponymically&#151;Santorini&#146;s cartilage (larynx), Santorini&#146;s vein, Santorini&#146;s duct (pancreas) and Santorini&#146;s caruncula (pancreas / bile duct)&#151;are described in this work. </p><p>This copy of Santorini&#146;s Observationes anatomicae bears numerous marginal annotations and corrections in Latin by an anonymous but remarkably erudite 18th-century medical scholar. Many of the notes are so long and detailed that they appear to represent an ongoing writing project&#151;possibly in preparation for a future corrected edition, although no such edition was ever published (the text in the 1739 second edition of Santorini&#146;s work is unchanged from the first edition). The manuscript notes appear on 34 pages throughout the text; the most extensive notes are on pages 4-5, 63, 98-99, 108, 147, 148-149 and 160. The notes on pages 98-99 are of particular interest in that they comment on (and possibly dispute) Santorini&#146;s description of the laryngeal cartilages. Also remarkable are the notes on pp. 148-149, which comment on Santorini&#146;s description of pulmonary circulation. The notes cite the works of over a dozen medical writers, including Eustachius, Morgagni, Falloppio, Fabricius, Heister, Valverde, Vesalius, Columbo, Cesalpino, Diemerbroeck, Bartholin and Estienne. A few of the notes are dated 1738. The inscription on the inside front cover gives the date of Santorini&#146;s death as May 7, 1737 (&#147;die Maij septima A.D. MDCCXXXVII&#148;) and states that he died of a periodic intermittent fever (&#147;febre periodica intermittente&#148;). Garrison-Morton 392.</p>

The revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and the death of his father led him to come to England. From there he went to the Netherlands where he enlisted in a company of French volunteers at Utrecht. He accompanied Willem III to England in 1688, and during the Williamite war in Ireland he took part in the siege of Carrickfergus and the Battle of Boyne, and was wounded at the Siege of Limerick (1690). He resigned in 1693 in order to become tutor to the Earl of Portland's son. After travelling with the boy, he settled with his family in Holland, first at the Hague, then, to save money, at Wesel, in 1707; there he began his great work L'Histoire d' Angleterre. It renews officially, by naming specific individuals, under the reign of Louis XV the interdictions, made by Louis XIV, for Protestants to exercise the trade of booksellers and printers. Frère (Manuel de Bibliographie Normande, I, p. 171, col. 1) devotes a whole page to this affair of forbidding booksellers to work and the suspension of the brothers Calloüe and the family Le Tourneur - a suspension which nevertheless did not impede the Calloüe family being one of the most famous families of printers in Rouen where they worked from 1612 to at least 1753; printing and edition not only many Protestant works but also books in Spanish or translated from the Spanish. There is also a widow Calloüe who died at the Bastille and Jean Calloüe himself fled to England where another member of his family, Denis, translated into French, works that were favorable to King Charles II.z

Contemporary half calf, spines gilt and with black title-labels (later boards). With engraved allegorical frontispiece, printed title-page in red and black, folding portrait of Valentijn, 19 portraits of the Governors-General, and 326 illustrations, maps, plans, bird's-eye views and plates (most of them double-page or folding; including fragments of Javanese manuscripts).* First edition. - One of the most extensive works on the history of the Far East (including Persia), which never can be superseded as many of the documents of which the author made use, do not longer exist. François Valentijn (1666-1727) was a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church who lived for many years on Amboyna and Java. During this period he collected an enormous mass of information, especially in the fields of history, geography and ethnology, concerning all parts of the world where the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was active: Indonesia, with large parts on Batavia and the Moluccas, Persia, Malacca, Ceylon, India, Cape of Good Hope, Japan, China and Formosa. The work is profusely illustrated with fine engraved maps, plans, portraits and spectacular views. They are engraved by the best artists of the time like F. Ottens, J.C. Philips, G. Schouten, J. Goeree etc. mostly after designs by M. Balen. Apart from the fine engravings the work is of particular interest for its cartography. It contains interesting maps of Australia, probably drawn after manuscript maps now lost. For his descriptions of the natural history of Amboyna Valentijn used i.a. the unpublished 'Amboinsch Dierboek' by the famous naturalist Rumphius, of which the original manuscript has been lost. - (Not inserted and also not mentioned in the plate-index is the portrait of Governor General De Haan). - With bookplates of J.C. Contents good and tight, paper toned with occasional spotting, the odd finger mark, a little dust soiling to the top edge of some pages. A good set of the first ten volumes, ideally in need of rebinding. The first edition of the complete work was published in 14 volumes in the Haag 1724-39, concerning the years 1696-1718, collected together by the political writer Guillaume de Lamberty (1660-1742). A later edition was published in Amsterdam 1735-40. .
