Inked edges. The paper has very slight darkening. After a three-year journey through Europe to avoid the ecclesiastic fate they wanted him to take on, he spent four years accompanying Gassendi when he fell ill. A little surprisingly, during this time he obtained, after only one quarter of the way through his studies in Montpellier between May and July 1652, authorization to practice medicine outside of France. After the death of Gassendi in 1655, he undertook a trip to the East - he had been to Syria and Palestine in 1654- but after going through Palestine and having problems in Egypt (he caught the plague) and not managing to work out a way to travel to Abyssinia), he changed direction and embarked on a trip to India, to the land of the Great Mogul -India: these territories are not be confused with the Great Mogul s-, where he spent the next ten years and Voyages provides an account of this time. Bernier arrived in Hindustan just after the emperor Shah Jahan (Chah-Jehan, in Bernier s writing)- who had the wonder known as the Taj Mahal built (Taje-Mehalle, in the Bernier s text) to honour his late wife- fell ill. So he witnessed the civil wars caused by the rebellion of his third son against his brother who was designated the successor, which ended with the victory of rebel, Aurangzeb, who would later become emperor for almost fifty years. He decided to stay on as court physician for over ten years and was the first European to describe Kashmir and the first to draw a map of that territory. The work is also largely structured as letters addressed to the intellectuals of progressive media, such as the La Mothe Le Vayer, Chapelain, Merveilles letters, together with one addressed to Colbert on the working of the precious metals trade and the causes for the decline of Asian nations. Voyages was originally published in 1670 in four volumes, two on the civil wars, Histoire de la derniere revolution des Etats du Gran Mogol y Evenemens particuliers, ou ce qui s est passé de plus considerable aprés la guerre pendant cinc ans, ou environ, dans les Etats du Gran Mogol, and two more, descriptive texts, which he entitled Suite des memoires du Sr Bernier sur l empire du Gran Mogol. The work was enormously successful: it was translated into English in 1671, into Dutch and German in 1672 and into Italian in 1675 (1). After Bernier s death, a printer from Amsterdam, Paul Marret, published it in 1699 and, although he reprinted it no less than five times, it is very difficult to find it complete all its engravings, possibly due to the success of two of them: the fold-out of the Court of the Great Mogul, used as an illustration in many subsequent works, and the map of Kashmir, created by Jan Janssonius for the short Dutch edition of Bernier s text, also printed by Marret in 1672.- // (1) The first exhaustive bibliography of Bernier can be found at p XXV-XLII of Bernier s travels English edition, edited and published by Archibald Constable, François Bernier: Travels in the Mogul Empire. Westminster: Archibald Constable, 1891.- // Refs.: Boucher de La Richarderie, V, 65-67; Brunet, I, p. 802. "

Quelques rousseurs. «In the period bounded on one side by Viète and Descartes and on the other part by Newton and Leibniz, Huygens was Europe's greatest mathematicians. In mechanics, in the period after Galileo and before Newton, he stood for many years on a solitary height. His contributions to astronomy, time measurement, and the theory of light are fundamental, and his studies in the many other fields to which his universal interest directed him are of a very high order. » (Biographical dictionary of mathematicians).

1724 1ed Alchemy & Occult Chemistry of Paracelsus Archidoxes Colonna Archidoxa

Published: A Paris : Chez d'Houry fils ., 1724. - 1724 1ed Alchemy & Occult Chemistry of Paracelsus Archidoxes Colonna Archidoxa Edited by Famous Colonna of Philosopher’s Stone Elixir An absolutely incredible work of the doctrines of Paracelsus and Archidoxes including philosophy on alchemy and chemistry! Paracelsus (1493 – 1541), born Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Paracelsus Bombastus von Hohenheim, was a Swiss German philosopher, physician, botanist, astrologer, and general occultist. He is credited as the founder of toxicology. He is also a famous revolutionary for utilizing observations of nature, rather than referring to ancient texts, something of radical defiance during his time. He is credited for giving zinc its name, calling it zincum. Modern psychology often also credits him for being the first to note that some diseases are rooted in psychological conditions. Francesco Maria Pompeo Colonna (1649 – 1726) was one of the most famous 17th-and-18th-century alchemists and was among one of the many seeking the philosopher’s stone and elixir of life – which helped pave the way for modern chemistry.         The Religious Philosopher: or, the Right Use of contemplating the Works of the Creator . Design’d for the Conviction of Atheists and Infidels. Throughout which, all the late discoveries in Anatomy, Philosophy, and Astronomy, . Are most copiously handled by that learned mathematician Dr. Nieuwentyt. Translated from the Low-Dutch. To which is prefix’d, a letter to the translator [John Chamberlayne] by . J. T. Desaguliers. The Third Edition. Adorned with cuts. London : printed for Tho. Longman, 1724.

      - Third English edition of Het regt gebruik der werelt beschouwingen, Nieuwentyt's main work of 1715 directed against Spinoza and his followers. This translation was reprinted in Amsterdam in 1727 and again in 1760. John Chamberlayne's translation had first been published in 1718. 'Nieuwentijt (1654-1718) published his main works later in life. Het regt gebruik (The Right Use of Contemplating the Works of the Creator) was explicitly directed at people who, under the influence of Spinoza, felt that nature was nothing but chance and necessity and that the Bible was not the infallible word of God. It seems likely that Nieuwentijt was indeed familiar with such ‘atheists’. In the very comprehensive Het regt gebruik he demonstrated that the investigation of nature, far from leading to irreligion, demonstrates at all places the hand of an all-wise, almighty and benevolent God. Referring both to scientific literature and his own experiments, he reviewed the latest discoveries on the human body, the elements, the heavens, animals, plants, and so on, and showed that they all pointed to plan and purpose, and could not possibly have come into being by a merely fortuitous concurrence of particles. Just as a watch needs a watchmaker (a metaphor much elaborated), so things in nature point to an allwise Creator. The argument by itself was an old one, but was used in works on theology, hardly in works of science. British authors like Ray and Derham had developed it more or less in the way Nieuwentijt does. Nieuwentijt may have been aware of their work, but appears to have conceived of the view put forward in his own book independently' (Dictionary of Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Dutch Philosophers). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes, 4to, viii, [xxviii], xxix, 234; [ii], 235-585 pp., 29 folding plates, contemporary panelled calf, rubbed and with some minor scrapes, slight loss to spine caps, front joints starting but firm, small circular Selbourne Library stamps on title versos, a very good copy. Prijs: € 1.250,-.

BESCHRYVING VAN DE KAAP DER GOEDE HOOPE

Dordrecht, Johannes van Braam 1724-1726. ISBN or SBN Number: n/a. Important and rare volume by an author, who had access to the archives and source documents of the VOC when he compiled this report. This volume contains matters relating to the Cape, Madagascar and Mauritius. The first chapter deals with the discovery and early European arrivals, as well as outlying areas. The next describes the Company Gardens, botanical matters as well as the administrative structure of the settlement, and lists of administrative personnel at the Cape. The next handles the free burghers and burghers and health matters. The fourth chapter contains the first printed version of Governor van der Stel's 1685 journey to Namaqualand, as well as the journal of Landrost Starrenburg's trek up north in 1705. The next chapter deals with the Hottentots, their economy and lifestyle, as well as a vocabulary of their language. The next chapter is once more dealing with early European interaction at the Cape until the then present time. Included is a short description of Mascarene islands. A full chapter is devoted to Mauritius, its discovery, colonisation, fauna and flora. The last chapter once more deals with the Cape and its religious structures. A valuable snapshot of early 18th century Cape - some seventy years after the arrival of Europeans., 160 pp with 10 text illustrations (one full page and one double page) full folding map of the Cape 58 x 48 cm, full folding map of Mauritius, as well as a further four folding sketch maps and a single page map The book has been re-bound in plain brown linen and endpapers have been repaired. Generally in good, clean condition, especially folding plates and maps, but one major defect is the presence of (NOT LIVE) bookworm damage between pp 117-160 in the bottom right-hand corner of the textblock. Most tunneling is minimal, but some tracks are up to 50 mm long - none obliterating any significant amount of text. The maps illustrations are not affected. All books are shipped from South Africa. We will email with price quote for shipping.

(Caillet n°2506. Dorbon n°825. Duveen, p.455. Ferguson, I. 439. Wellcome, II, p. 375). [Attributes: First Edition]
