        THE RELIGION OF NATURE DELINEATED

Lintott ...,. 1724. Hardcover. Contemporary panelled calf. 4to. 218 pages; 26 cm. In English with bibliographical footnotes in English, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin. Mottoes on title page in Greek by Plutarch and Plato. William Wollaston “was a school teacher, a Church of England priest, a scholar of Latin, Greek and Hebrew, a theologian, and a major Enlightenment era English philosopher. He is remembered today for one book, which he completed only two years before his death: The Religion of Nature Delineated. Yet despite his cloistered life and his single book, due to his influence on eighteenth-century philosophy and his promotion of a Natural Religion, he may be considered one of the great British Enlightenment philosophers, along with Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. His work contributed to the development of two important intellectual schools: British Deism, and ‘the pursuit of happinessÂ’ moral philosophy of American Practical Idealism, which appears notably in the United States Declaration of Independence” (Wikipedia 2017) . Benjamin Franklin wrote that he worked as a compositor on this book, which prompted him to publish his pamphlet, 'A Dissertation on Liberty and Necessity, Pleasure and Pain. Â’ The Library of Congress keeps their copy in their Benjamin Franklin collection. SUBJECT(S) : Natural theology, Early works to 1800, Philosophy. Moderate pencil markings that affect parts of text. Decaying of leather. Some dampstaining and slight toning. Minimal edgewear. Good condition. (BR-12-5) .

Oeuvres Meslees (meslées) de Mr. De La Grange

Chez Chrles Le Vier, The Hague / A La Haye 1724 - First printing, 1724. 8vo, bound in full later 18th century maroon morocco gilt, with leather bookplate of well known American book collector Robert Hoe, whose collection was sold at auction in 1912, pp. (8) 157 (3), a number of small vignette copperplates. Very good clean copy. Lagrange-Chancel was heralded as a dramatist who would be a worthy successor to Racinet, when he published a series of odes called the Philippiques in 1720, accusing Philip the Duke of Orleans of terrible crimes including incest with his own daughter. Consequently he was thrown into jail, and it was while he was incarcerated that the current volume was published. He escaped, heading to Spain, Sardinia and Italy, only returning to France upon the death of the duke. His literary career never recovered. The catalogue of Robert Hoe's library features a number of books by LaGrange-Chancel but notably not this title. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Portugese synagoge - Bernard Picart, 1724-1727.

Prijs: ?750,-.

Erfurt, Funcke, 1720-, 1724. - circa 17 x 10,5 cm. Mit gestochenem Frontispiz, 2 (statt 3; 1 gefalt.) Titeln in Rot und Schwarz, doppelblattgr. Titel in Schwarz, 17 Frontisp. in Holzschnitt, 2 gefalt. Tafeln (aus typogr. Elementen zusammengesetzt) sowie zahlreichen Textholzschnitten Pappe d. Zt. Hayn-G. Freinshemii, Joh. Schefferi, Christoph. Cellarii, Nic. Heinsii. Selectis & excerptis Ph. Rubenii..., auctioribusque Indicibus. Curavit & digessit Henricus Snakenburg. Delpis Lugduni Batavorum: A Beman, S Luchtmans 1724. With copperengraved frontispiece, 1 folded map and 17 copperengraved plates, some folded. Title-page printed in red and black. [74] + 824 + [225] pp. Weakly foxed though well-preserved copy bound in contemporary full vellum with leather-label on spine. Red edges. Flyleaf restored. Quintus Curtius Rufus was a Roman historian, writing probably during the reign of the Emperor Claudius (41-54 AD) or Vespasian. His only surviving work, De Rebus Gestis Alexandri Magni, or Historiae Alexandri Magni, is a biography of Alexander the Great in Latin in ten books, of which the first two are lost, and the remaining eight are incomplete. His work is fluidly written, and while superficial study reveals the authors errors regarding geography, chronology and technical military knowledge, a detailed study reveals his focusing instead on character and protests against those Emperors of his times whom he considered tyrants. Lafitau's study influenced, among others, Rousseau and Chateaubriand, and drew the vituperation of Voltaire. A Jesuit priest, Lafitau spent the years 1712-1718 in Canada, at least part of the time living among the Iroquois. 'In his endeavour to prove American aborigines were of Tartar stock, he prepared an encyclopaedic work describing in great detail and accuracy their customs, religions, beliefs and social organisation' (TPL).The social scientists of the Enlightenment saw Lafitau's book as 'a convincing demonstration of the fact that contemporary American society could be regarded as a kind of living model... of human society in the 'first' or 'earliest' stage of its development. Lafitau, in other words, had in their view vindicated the hypothesis that in the beginning all the World was America...' (R.L. Meek, Social Science and the Ignoble Savage, 1976; p. 57). New spines and labels on old French binding, original sides rubbed.

        Observationes anatomicae

Venice: Giovanni Battista Recurti, 1724. First edition, with three engraved folding plates, of Santorini's most important contribution to medical science, containing the "major discoveries for which Santorini is known eponymically" (Garrison-Morton). "This work records a number of new anatomical discoveries and corrects many errors of earlier anatomists. Santorini's skill and expertise were so outstanding that his name lives on in such anatomical structures as the accessory pancreatic ducts, risorius muscle, arytenoid cartilages, and duodenal papillae, several of which are described in this book. The text is accompanied by three folding copperplates which beautifully illustrate the musculature of the face, the pelvic musculature and genitalia of a sixteen-year-old girl with a tubal pregnacy, the external muscles of the ear, and detailed anatomy of the male genitalia and larynx" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Garrison-Morton 392; Norman 1887; Waller 8474. Venice: Giovanni Battista Recurti, 1724. Quarto, contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards rebacked. Some scuffing to contemporary marbled boards, very minor dampstaining to margins at rear (not affecting text); otherwise fine. Very Good.

Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

A Modest Defence of Publick Stews: or, An Essay Upon Whoring, as is now practis'd in these Kingdoms. Written by a Layman.

Printed by A. Moore near St. Paul's. 1724 [4], xii, [4], 78pp. Half title; sl. worming in lower margin, not affecting text. Contemp. full panelled calf, at some point neatly rebacked. v.g.ESTC T114402, with 'layman' spelled correctly on titlepage. The work examines the issue of prostitution in England, and broadly supports a system whereby prostitution is legalised and regulated, allowing for the existence of licensed brothels, or as the anonymous author terms them 'publick stews'. He suggests that the 'incouraging of publick Whoring, will not only prevent most of the mischievous Effects of this Vice, but even lessen the Quantity of the Whoring in general, and reduce it to the narrowest Bounds which it can possibly by maintain'd in.' The dedication is signed by 'Your Fellow-Reformer, and Devoted Servant, Phil-Porney'. It has been attributed to both Bernard de Mandeville & George Ogle. BL indicates that the imprint is fictitious.
