        Summa Tripartiti, 125 ff.

1723 - Eighteenth-Century Manuscript on the Constitutional Law of Hungary [Manuscript]. [Kingdom of Hungary]. [Summa Tripartiti]. [N.p, c. 1723]. [125] ff. Octavo (8" x 6-1/4"). Contemporary three-quarter vellum over patterned paper-covered boards. Moderate rubbing with wear to extremities, scuffing to boards, corners bumped, some chipping to spine ends. Light toning, text in Latin, written in a fine secretarial hand, ownership inscription (of Ignatius Modrovich, "Advocati," dated 1811) to front free endpaper. * Free of cross-outs or other signs of revision, and with a detailed alphabetical table of contents, this appears to be a fair-copy of an outline of the Hungarian Tripartitum. Compiled in 1514 by Istvan Werboczy [c.1465-1541], a Hungarian jurist and statesman, this collection of early customary laws, though never incorporated formally, was regarded as the second pillar of the Hungarian constitution. It was a de facto law-book of Hungary until 1848. According to the doctrine of the Holy Crown, which appeared in the Tripartitum, the king and the legally equal noblemen formulated the "corpse of the Holy Crown," which symbolized the Hungarian state. Contemporary blue boards with printed title.

Bolten, Dutch and Flemish drawing books, p. 152 (second ed. 1723); Bridson-White E45 (first ed. Amsterdam, F. de Wit, ca. 1700) and E49 (other ed.); Cat. Kunsthist. Bibl. Rijksmus. Amst. I, p. 222 (the only other copy of this edition we could trace); Thieme- Becker IV, pp. 125-6; not in STCN . Third (?) edition of a famous model drawing book by Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651), a very influential and prolific Dutch Mannerist painter, print maker, and art teacher. After a journey to France, he went to Amsterdam in 1591 and three years later he seetled finely in Utrecht where he founded the Guild of St Luke. The plates are accompanied by two pages of text in French and Dutch and intended for (art-)students, however this leaf is not recorded in the copy of the library of the Rijksmuseum. This series of plates was firstly published under the title 'Nieut teeckenboeck inhoudende alle de principaelste fondamenten om te leeren teeckenen (Amsterdam, F. de Wit, ca. 1700) and later by Hendrick Bosch in 1723. Both editions contain an engraved title and 23 plates. The title is after a drawing by Bloemaert, the 23 other plates are after A. Carracci's drawings and partly originally engraved by L. Ciamberlano (1586-1641). Some of these plates were also published in Ciamberlano's 'Fondamento del latre sic desgenia ... Fondamenten der Teyckenkonst ... (Amsterdam, C.J. Visscher 1651).For his numerous pupils Bloemaert, assisted by his sons, published in about 1650 an very extensive drawing book, Artis Apellae liber, which became very famous and was republished, selected from and copied after for centuries. At the hand of these models Bloemaert taught gifted pupils like Hendrik ter Brugghen, Gerard van Honthorst, Andries and Jan Both, Dirk Hals, Hendrik de Keyser, and Paulus Moreelse with whom he founded a Drawing Academy in Utrecht. His son Frederik Bloemaert often engraved after his father's drawings, and so did Hendrik Goltzius, Jan Saenredam, Jacob Matham, and others. His model book was originally based on the idea that the art of drawing could be learned by imitating the good example. Bloemaert also believed that the apprentice would be able to achieve a good representation of the human figure by first learning to draw the individual parts of the human body from his book. An early nineteenth/century edition of this manual for school boys and students, published under the famous name of Bloemaert, testifying of the broad and pervasive influence this artist still had at the time. Good copy, with ownership's entry in ink in ms. on inside front cover: 'B. de Langhe'.- (Binding dam. & re/backed; some water stains, first plate soiled and stained)..

Les Indes orientales, ou sont distingues les Empires et Royaumes qu'elles contiennent, tirees du Neptune Oriental.

Artist: Vaugondyde Robert ( - 1786 ) Paris; issued in : Paris; date: 1751 1723 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Perfect condition; size (in cm): 48,5 x 56,5 - description: Map shows India with Sri Lanka-Ceylan with Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Kambodscha and Malaysia. - vita of the artist: Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723 -1786) also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material, which they combined with maps and plates acquired after Hubert Jaillot's death in 1712 to form the basis the Atlas Universel.         Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica

1723. NEWTON, Isaac. Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. Amsterdam: Sumptibus Societatis, 1723. Quarto, contemporary full paneled brown calf rebacked and recornered in elaborately gilt-decorated calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $15,000.Second Amsterdam edition (the second continental printing), based upon the 1713 second edition, with the addition of the Analysis per Quantitatum Series, Fluxiones, ac Differentias: cum Enumeratione Linearum Tertii Ordinis, in contemporary paneled calf boards.""The Principia is generally described as the greatest work in the history of science. Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had certainly shown the way; but where they described the phenomena they observed, Newton explained the underlying universal laws… [F]or the first time a single mathematical law could explain the motion of objects on earth as well as the phenomena of the heavens. It was this grand conception that produced a general revolution in human thought, equaled perhaps only by that following Darwin's Origin of Species"" (PMM 161). Three authorized editions of Newton's Principia mathematica were issued during his lifetime, but demand for the work was so great on the Continent that two unauthorized reprints were also published in Amsterdam in 1714 and 1723. ""These Amsterdam reprints were a major undertaking, requiring the cutting of new wood-blocks for the figures and a new setting of type. The second reprint (1723) contains not only four tracts by Newton and W. Jones's 'Praefatio Editoris,' but also extracts from four letters of Newton's. These tracts are: De analysi per aequationes infinitas (first published by Jones in 1711), De quadratura curvarum and Enumeratio linearum tertii ordinis (published with the Opticks in 1704 and the Optice in 1706, but eliminated from the second English edition of the Opticks in 1717/18), and the Methodus differentialis. But this whole collection—the four tracts, the extracts from Newton's letters, and Jones's 'Praefatio'—was merely a reprint, without alteration, of a collection that was first published as a small book in London in 1711. It was reissued separately in Amsterdam in 1723 as well as being included as a supplement to the reprint of the Principia. How curious indeed that Newton's long-cherished plan of publishing De quadratura together with the Principia should have been realized only in this presumably unauthorized Amsterdam reprint of 1723!"" (Cohen, Introduction to Newton's Principia, 257). ""This edition re-set, with the plate and diagrams re-engraved. In the Analysis per Quantitatum Series, head and tail-pieces and woodcut initials are used. One tail-piece used several times has in the oval centre the initials G.W. with the 4 mark"" (Gray, 10). Wallis 12. Extensive notes and underlining to Preface.Interior generally quite clean, expert restoration to contemporary paneled calf boards. An extremely good copy.

April 1728. Stahl was the originator of the phlogiston theory, which dominated chemistry until the end of the 18th century. Stahl took the structure of his theory from Becher, who had stated air, water and earth to be the three elementary principles with water and earth the basis of all material things, and who had further subdivided the principle of earth into the three principles of substantiality, combustibility and weight/ductility/volatility. Stahl elaborated from Becher's "second earth" a new chemical principle, phlogiston, a substance representing the principle of combustibility that combined with other chemical substances to form compounds. Experimental evidence for the existence of phlogiston came largely from metals and minerals, particularly from the reversible relationship of metals and their calces: when a metal was heated intensely, its phlogiston was driven off and a calx appeared, but when phlogiston was reintroduced to the calx (by heating it with carbon, oil, pitch or other phlogiston-rich materials), the metal reappeared. Air did not combine with phlogiston but received it when it was liberated during combustion; air could absorb only a limited amount of phlogiston, and when that limit was reached, combustion could not longer take place. The flaws in the phlogiston theory are obvious, and it did not survive the 18th century; however, it served as an important link between the older chemical concepts and the new, an attempt to modify the existing intellectual framework in order to account for new experimental observations (Norman). "Johann Samuel Carl, a student of Stahl's, arranged these lecture notes of Stahl's for publication with the author's approval. The lectures were first delivered in 1684 and manuscript copies being "abroad led to this authorized version. Very Good.
