The Fatal Legacy; A Tragedy. As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal in Lincolns-Inn Fields

London: Printed for E. Symon, J. Roberts and A. Dodd, 1723, 1723. First edition. ESTC N9868. First and final leaves a little dust-soiled; very good copy.. 8vo, disbound, 79 pages. Half-title present. A translation and adaptation of Racine's La Thébaide. The anonymous dedication states "This tragedy was writ by a young lady, and entrusted to my management . . . The four first acts are taken chiefly from Racine; but the last is (excepting a few lines) entirely new." The Fatal Legacy had a short run at Lincolns-Inn Fields, with Anthony and Anna Maria Seymour Boheme in starring roles. It is apparently the only publication by Jane Robe, about whom little else is recorded. The attribution to Robe comes from Allardyce Nicoll's A History of English Drama.

Housed in a modern cloth binder, with gilt-lettered spine title. This rare item is the first statute establishing New York chancery fees, thus curing "the Inconveniences that may thereby ensue" from their absence. No Chancery Officer "shall exact, demand or ask any greater or other Fee or Fees" than the amounts enumerated herein. These regulations limit the "Governour's Fees, as Keeper of the Great Seal of this Province," as well as fees of Masters, Registers, Clerks, Examiners, Solicitors, and other officers.         The History of Timur-Bec, known by the name of Tamerlain the Great, emperor of the Moguls and Tartars. (TWO VOLUMES).

      J. Darby, London 1723 - Volume: xxxi, 542 pp./ Volume II: 428 pp. [20], repaired half-title in volume one, 5 folding maps, some worming occasionally with little loss of text, initial blanks remargined, re-backed set with new spine & endpaper. This is Darby's translation of the French edition by François Pétis de la Croix that had appeared the previous year. Timur (1336 - 1405), historically known as Tamerlane. He conquered West, South and Central Asia and founded the Timurid dynasty. Timur envisioned the restoration of the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan. As a means of legitimating his conquests, Timur relied on Islamic symbols and language, referring to himself as the Sword of Islam and patronising educational and religious institutions. Timur emerged as the most powerful ruler in the Muslim world after defeating the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria, the emerging Ottoman Empire and the declining Sultanate of Delhi. Timur also decisively defeated the Christian Knights Hospitaller at Smyrna, styling himself a Ghazi. By the end of his reign, Timur had also gained complete control over all the remnants of the Chagatai Khanate, Ilkhanate, Golden Horde and even attempted to restore the Yuan dynasty. Timur's generally recognised biographers are Ali Yazdi, commonly called Sharaf ud-Din, author of the Zafarnameh, translated by Petis de la Croix in 1722, and from French into English by J. Darby in the following year; and Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abdallah, al-Dimashiqi, al-Ajami (commonly called Ahmad Ibn Arabshah) translated by the Dutch Orientalist Colitis in 1636. In the work of the former, as Sir William Jones remarks, "the Tatarian conqueror is represented as a liberal, benevolent and illustrious prince", in that of the latter he is "deformed and impious, of a low birth and detestable principles." But the favourable account was written under the personal supervision of Timur's grandson, Ibrahim, while the other was the production of his direst enemy. Among less reputed biographies or materials for biography may be mentioned a second Zafarnameh, by Nizam al-Din Shami, stated to be the earliest known history of Timur, and the only one written in his lifetime. The Tuzuk-i timuri or Malfuzat-i timuri, supposedly Timur's own autobiography, is actually a later fabrication. More recent biographies include Justin Marozzi's Tamerlane: Sword of Islam, Conqueror of the World (2006)[90] and Roy Stier's Tamerlane: The Ultimate Warrior (1998).         Summa Tripartiti, 125 ff.

1723 - Eighteenth-Century Manuscript on the Constitutional Law of Hungary [Manuscript]. [Kingdom of Hungary]. [Summa Tripartiti]. [N.p, c. 1723]. [125] ff. Octavo (8" x 6-1/4"). Contemporary three-quarter vellum over patterned paper-covered boards. Moderate rubbing with wear to extremities, scuffing to boards, corners bumped, some chipping to spine ends. Light toning, text in Latin, written in a fine secretarial hand, ownership inscription (of Ignatius Modrovich, "Advocati," dated 1811) to front free endpaper. * Free of cross-outs or other signs of revision, and with a detailed alphabetical table of contents, this appears to be a fair-copy of an outline of the Hungarian Tripartitum. Compiled in 1514 by Istvan Werboczy [c.1465-1541], a Hungarian jurist and statesman, this collection of early customary laws, though never incorporated formally, was regarded as the second pillar of the Hungarian constitution. It was a de facto law-book of Hungary until 1848. According to the doctrine of the Holy Crown, which appeared in the Tripartitum, the king and the legally equal noblemen formulated the "corpse of the Holy Crown," which symbolized the Hungarian state. (Skilfully rebacked, extremities of sides a bit chafed, browned paper, text slightly foxed, but a good and clean copy). Bookplate with coat of arms of Rumsey (device: "Virtue only has claim to honour"),.This is an edition of a historical work by the famous Syrian prince, historian and geographer of the family of the Ayyubids, Isma’il Ibn Muhammead Abu’l-Fida. Born in Damascus in 672/1273, Abu’l-Fida was publicly invested with the insignia of the Sultanate and the title of al-Malik al-Mu’ayyad by the ruling Mamluk Sultan Muhammad in 720/1320. He remained a close friend of the Sultan and enjoyed a great reputation as patron and man of letters until his death in 732/1331. Abu’l-Fida’s reputation rests on two works, both largely compilations, but rearranged and supplemented by himself. One of his descriptive geography, the Taqwim al-Buldan, which was completed in 721/1321 and which largely replaced all earlier geographical works. The other is Mukhtasar Ta’rikh al-Bashar, portion of which were edited and translated for the first time by Gagnier in the present volume. This universal history covering the pre-Islamic period and the Islamic history down to 729/1329 is based, especially in its earlier part, on Ibn al-Athir. Its contemporary popularity is shown by the continuations to it written by Ibn al-Wardi, Ibn Habib al-Dimashqi and Ibn al-Shihna al-Halabi. Through this edition of Gagnier, it became a major of the 18th century orientalism. Bibliographical reference: Brunet I, 18: "Ouvrage estimé". The book weighs around 2Kg with packaging. I, p. 222 (the only other copy of this edition we could trace); Thieme- Becker IV, pp. 125-6; not in STCN . Third (?) edition of a famous model drawing book by Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651), a very influential and prolific Dutch Mannerist painter, print maker, and art teacher. After a journey to France, he went to Amsterdam in 1591 and three years later he seetled finely in Utrecht where he founded the Guild of St Luke. The plates are accompanied by two pages of text in French and Dutch and intended for (art-)students, however this leaf is not recorded in the copy of the library of the Rijksmuseum. This series of plates was firstly published under the title 'Nieut teeckenboeck inhoudende alle de principaelste fondamenten om te leeren teeckenen (Amsterdam, F. de Wit, ca. 1700) and later by Hendrick Bosch in 1723. Both editions contain an engraved title and 23 plates. The title is after a drawing by Bloemaert, the 23 other plates are after A. Carracci's drawings and partly originally engraved by L. Ciamberlano (1586-1641). Some of these plates were also published in Ciamberlano's 'Fondamento del latre sic desgenia ... Fondamenten der Teyckenkonst ... (Amsterdam, C.J. Visscher 1651).For his numerous pupils Bloemaert, assisted by his sons, published in about 1650 an very extensive drawing book, Artis Apellae liber, which became very famous and was republished, selected from and copied after for centuries. At the hand of these models Bloemaert taught gifted pupils like Hendrik ter Brugghen, Gerard van Honthorst, Andries and Jan Both, Dirk Hals, Hendrik de Keyser, and Paulus Moreelse with whom he founded a Drawing Academy in Utrecht. His son Frederik Bloemaert often engraved after his father's drawings, and so did Hendrik Goltzius, Jan Saenredam, Jacob Matham, and others. His model book was originally based on the idea that the art of drawing could be learned by imitating the good example. Bloemaert also believed that the apprentice would be able to achieve a good representation of the human figure by first learning to draw the individual parts of the human body from his book. An early nineteenth/century edition of this manual for school boys and students, published under the famous name of Bloemaert, testifying of the broad and pervasive influence this artist still had at the time. Good copy, with ownership's entry in ink in ms. on inside front cover: 'B. de Langhe'.- (Binding dam. & re/backed; some water stains, first plate soiled and stained)..

Les Indes orientales, ou sont distingues les Empires et Royaumes qu'elles contiennent, tirees du Neptune Oriental.

Artist: Vaugondyde Robert ( - 1786 ) Paris; issued in : Paris; date: 1751 1723 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Perfect condition; size (in cm): 48,5 x 56,5 - description: Map shows India with Sri Lanka-Ceylan with Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Kambodscha and Malaysia. - vita of the artist: Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723 -1786) also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material, which they combined with maps and plates acquired after Hubert Jaillot's death in 1712 to form the basis the Atlas Universel. (Jammes). Brunet, II, 1237. Conlon, 23 : 348. Bigmore & Wyman, pp. 215-216: Very curious and esteemed work. Barber, French Letterpress printing, p. 8: Important and detailed work. Goldsmiths'-Kress, 6197.1. NLG, 5200.
