        Histoire de l'Amerique Septentrionale

Jean-Luc Nion and François Didot, Paris 1722 - (8 1/8 x 3 5/8 inches). Titles in red and black. [12], 1-10, 15-370, [4]; [2], 356, [8]; [12], 310, [6]; [2], 271, [5]pp., with errors in pagination as issued. Engraved frontispiece additional title by I.B. Scotin, 28 engraved plates and maps (12 folding), including a double-sided plate of music. Nineteenth-century roan-backed mottled paper boards, flat spine tooled and lettered in gilt. Provenance: Society of Jesus, Leyden (stamps on titles) Rare first edition of an important illustrated contemporary history of the Indian nations in Canada and their relations with the French, including among the earliest printed views in Canada. Claude-Charles Le Roy de la Potherie, also called Bacqueville de la Potherie, arrived in New France in 1698 as comptroller of the Marine and of the fortifications in Canada. His work, published some twenty years before Charlevoix's great history, provides an eyewitness account and historical record of the region. "Bacquevilles account is in the form of letters, one of them describing the Cartier expedition and summarizing the next century and a half, but the history is mostly of the administrations of Frontenac, De la Barre, and Denonville, and as such is a contemporary account of that great period. The work contains much on the relations of New France with the English colonies and with the Indians" (Streeter). The first volume includes a detailed account of the capture of Fort Nelson. "His letters on the governments of Quebec, Trois-Rivieres, and Montreal offer a fairly complete picture of Canada. The descriptions of places and of the settlers way of life, the notes on individuals, the statistics on population and sources of revenue show that nothing escaped La Potheries attention and that he wanted his readers to be well informed" (Canadian National Biography). The second volume is devoted to descriptions of the principal Indian nations and their relations with the French. The author relied on information from Louis Jolliet, the Jesuit missionaries, and from Nicolas Perrot, and includes information provided to him verbally and not found in other accounts. The remaining two volumes are devoted the Iroquois wars and of the peace discussions which led to the general treaty of 1701, including extracts from the speeches to the chiefs of the various nations. Among the illustrations are a prospect of Quebec, a view of the taking of Fort Nelson, images of fur traders and Indians, and three folding engraved maps of Hudsons Bay, Montreal and La Nouvelle France. Although described by Sabin as "the earliest views taken in Canada" they are preceded by those of Champlain and Lahontan. Nevertheless, the engravings provide the best, and arguably most accurate, iconography of the customs and costume of early Native American culture in Canada. As noted by TPL and OCLC, although volume one contains a gap in pagination between pages 10 and 15, the text is continuous and was issued with at least one cancelled leaf between; the gap in pagination, without the cancelled printer's error, as is found in most extant examples. Howes B23; Field 66; Lande 21; European Americana 722/10; Sabin 2692; TPL 131 (1753 edition); Streeter sale I:120; Rich, I., 31; Boucher VI., 22; Siebert sale 11; Graff 133; Bell B2; Jones 413; Leclerc 98; Brunet 28506.         Justini Philosophi & Martyris Apologiae Duae Et Dialogus Cum Tryphone Judaeo

Londini : Impensis Richardi Sare 1722 - Folio. 468 p. Latin and Greek. Bound in contemporary full leather. Handsome binding. Gilt lettering on spine. 6 raised bands. Beautifully restored. Red and gold leather spine label. Rebacked. Good binding and cover. Bookplate of Sir John Chester, 6th Baronet on inside board. Clean, unmarked pages with tanning. Contents: The First Apology addressed to Antoninus Pius, his sons, and the Roman Senate; Second Apology of Justin Martyr addressed to the Roman Senate; Dialogue with Trypho. Justin Martyr, also known as Saint Justin, was an early Christian apologist, and is regarded as the foremost interpreter of the theory of the Logos in the 2nd century. Most of his works are lost, but two apologies and a dialogue did survive. The First Apology, his most well known text, passionately defends the morality of the Christian life, and provides various ethical and philosophical arguments to convince the Roman emperor, Antoninus, to abandon the persecution of the fledgling sect. Further, he also makes the theologically-innovative suggestion that the seeds of Christianity actually predated Christ's incarnation. In the Dialogue with Trypho, after an introductory section, Justin undertakes to show that Christianity is the new law for all men. In this work, Justin associated Satan with the Serpent that induced the fall of Adam and Eve in Genesis. He was the first interpreter of the Scripture to make this association.       Oxford: Printed at The Theater, 1722. First edition in English. Engraved title vignette. [8], 232, [7, list of subscribers]. 1 vols. Nineteenth-century half brown morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, t.e.g. Lynn bookplate and two others. Extremities lightly rubbed, else a fine clean copy, custom morocco-tipped slipcase. "The labor of translating this Greco-Roman author was divided between Mr. Diaper (Pt. 1, Books I and II) and John Jones (Pt. 2, Books III to V). The latter contributor also wrote an account of Oppian"s life and writings and compiled a catalogue of his Fishes. The contests between rival factions in the sea are amusingly drawn in the lines relating to the Lobster, the Lamprey, and the Preke (octopus). The remarkable color-changes of the last named were well know to the ancients (Book II). " - Wood.

The first is essentially a four-part pastoral novel about love and life while the second is an eight-part novel concerning a pair of young lovers whose parents oppose their friendship with the expected result of the youngsters running away together and having adventures and misadventures.Provenance: No individual's name appears, but the title-page is inscribed in an 18th-century hand with the name of a little town in southeast Puebla, Sto.         Carte de L'Isle de Ceylan

Paris: Chez l'Auteur Sur le Quai de l'Horloge, 1722. Map. Engraving with modern hand coloring. Image measures 20" x 25.5". Beautiful map of the island of Ceylan from 1722 with two ornate cartouches. Includes part of southern India. Nautical soundings and banks noted, including a large pearl bank. Some staining to margins and small repair to margin lower left. Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726) was one of the cartographers who propelled the French school of map-making away from Dutch dominance. The French school emphasized science and accuracy over ornament. His family took over the business and kept publishing maps well into the late 18th century. He used astronomical observations to determine locations and draw more precise coastlines. He continually updated his maps and dispelled prevailing geographical inaccuracies throughout his life. Engraved by Claude-Auguste Berey who was the official engraver for the Royal Academy of Sciences.

Two Test Oaths, The First Combating Catholic Doctrines and the Second Rejecting James III?s Claim to the Throne

An extremely rare pair of broadsides offering a series of oaths pledging fealty to the reign of George I. The first attests to George I as rightful King of England, rejects any influences of the Pope and Roman Catholicism (shown below), and rejects transubstantiation (turning bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ) as an article of faith. The second broadside is a complete rejection of James III?s or his progeny?s claims to England?s, or anyone else?s, throne. [KING GEORGE I] Broadside. ?Oaths Appointed to be taken instead of the Oaths of Allegiance and Supremacy, and Declaration,? pledged and signed by Josiah Wolcot[t], Salem, Mass., March 26, 1722. Also pledged and signed: Thomas Burrill, May 20, 1722; William Gedney, July 19, 1722; and John Williams, August 7, 1722. Includes witness signatures.[KING GEORGE I] Broadside. ?Declaration? [to the reign of King George], pledged and signed by Josiah Wolcot[t], Salem, Mass., March 26, 1722. Also pledged and signed: Thomas Burrill, May 20, 1722; William Gedney, July 19, 1722; and John Williams, August 7, 1722. Includes witness signatures.Excerpt of the Second Oath, Rejecting the Pope?s Authority ?I...Do Swear, That I do from my Heart, abhor, detest and abjure as Impious and Heretical, that damnable Doctrine and Position, that Princes Excommunicated, or deprived by the Pope or any authority of the See of Rome, may be Deposed or Murthered by their Subjects, or any other whatsoever; And I do declare that no Forein [sic]Prince, Person, Prelate, State or Potentate, hath or out to have any Jurisdiction, Power, Superiority, Preeminence or Authority, Ecclesiastical or Spiritual, within the Realm of GREAT BRITAIN. So Help me GOD.?Historical BackgroundExcept in Maryland, most colonial Americans (and their English forefathers) found Catholicism anathema. Catholics were excluded from voting and holding public office, forbidden to have churches and schools, and were subject to numerous other legal disabilities. Public officials were required to take ?test oaths? attesting to their rejection of Catholic doctrine and loyalty to English monarchs. The English Civil War, beginning in 1642, threw the nation into nearly a century of political turmoil. While the both monarchy and the Church of England returned with the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants continued to dominate the political landscape. When Charles II died, James II, a Roman Catholic, became king. James?s Catholicism led English noblemen to invite William III (of Orange) to invade. James would prove to be the last Catholic King of England, and abdicated during the Glorious Revolution (1688). Protestants William and Mary ruled Britain until their deaths, hers in 1694, and his in 1702, at which time Mary?s daughter Anne ascended the throne.Upon James II?s death in exile in 1701, his son James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766),declared himself King James III and was immediately recognized by the predominantly Catholic nations of France, Spain, the Papal States, and Modena, his mother?s birthplace. He mounted his own invasion in 1708, which failed. The 1701 Act of Settlement forbade Catholics from attaining the throne, so when Queen Anne died in 1714, George I, a German Protestant, ascended the throne and established the Hanoverian line. In 1715, James III (who was also James VIII of Scotland) joined the Jacobite Uprising, returned to Scotland, and challenged George I for the throne. When popular support withered, he returned to France and eventually moved to Rome, where he died in 1766, having lived to see his son, ?Bonny? Prince Charlie?s 1745 effort to regain the throne also end in failure at the Battle of Culloden. These particular loyalty and test oaths followed in the wake of James III?s (the ?Old Pretender?) final, failed attempt at the English throne. In the 1721, officials uncovered the plot, led by Bishop Francis Atterbury and fellow Scottish Jacobites, with the goal of deposing George I and returning James III from exile. Atterbury was arrested in 1721 and by 1722 was imprisoned in the Tower of London. In this Oath, Wolcott and the others are actually pledging their loyalty under provisions of the 1715 Oath Act, which Parliament passed in the wake of James III?s attempt at the throne in that year. This 1715 act required British clergy, political and judicial officeholders, schoolmasters, and constables to pledge their allegiance to King George I as England?s legitimate King, to the Church of England as its national faith, and to reject anything that smacked of Popery?"even to the point of murder! The Oath Act was amended in 1723 to require loyalty oaths from all British subjects, not just officeholders. These two pieces represent a time of intrigue during the reign of George I?"the period between uncovering a serious threat to his power and Parliament tightening the law requiring oath-taking. There are many examples of earlier oaths to Charles II, William III, and Anne; and later oaths to George II and III, but none pledging loyalty to George I appear in Worldcat, COPAC, or the catalogs of the Library of Congress, British Library, National Archives of the U.K., American Antiquarian Society, Boston Athenaeum, or Massachusetts Historical Society. After contacting a number of the above institutions, we could not locate another similarly-dated example. One comparable oath from c. 1714 appears in the collection of the National Archives of the United Kingdom when searching in the English Short Title Catalog (ESTC) of the British Library, but not in the actual catalog of the National Archives. We are currently in discussion with them to locate it.Josiah Wolcott, Esquire, was born in England in 1658 and died in 1729. He was a town Selectman and Judge of the Common Pleas in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. Theophilus Burrill, (1669-1737) was a businessman, court officer, and Justice of the Peace in Lynn, Massachusetts. Along with his brother, he donated silver sacrament vessels to the First Congregational Church in Lynn. He sold his inherited tannery in 1721. In 1725, he was a special justice to the Inferior Court of Common Pleas for Essex County and in 1733 he was named a full Judge of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. The Burrill family was known as Lynn?s royal family on account of their famous connections. William Gedney, Esquire, (1668-1729) was a Salem merchant, Sheriff, and prominent in public affairs. His uncle Bartholomew Gedney presided over the Salem Witch Trials of 1692-93.

L' Asie dressee selon les dernieres Relations et Suivant les Nouvelles Decouverts?

Paris: 1722. Engraved double page map, 28" x 20", wide margins, hand colored in outline, two uncolored pictorial cartouches. Expert and nearly invisible repairs along centerfold, normal aging; about near fine. Impression is bright and clean. Nicholas De Fer (1646-1720) was a highly respected and prolific French cartographer whose maps were valued for their decorative appeal. Around 1690 he was made the geographer to the Dauphin, and published his first atlas. He would become geographer to other high-ranking individuals in French and Spanish society. The present map is detailed and attractive map of Asia, with a cartouche showing Chinese at the upper left, and Indians in the upper right. The map covers a lot of territory showing Arabia and the Persian Empire in the West, and Japan in the east, but goes as far south as the Isle of Borneo and Java. Finely printed with decorative woodcut headpiece, initials, and engraved chapter vignettes depicting author’s optical experiments (white on black background -- see sketch of vignette in Guerlac, pp. 158 and on dust jacket of his book). With 12 folding engraved plates. Full vellum; faint water stains on the blank fore-edge of a few leaves. Bookplate of Arnold Thackray as well as a very interesting contemporary wax armorial stamp used as a bookplate. An especially nice, crisp copy, important for its illustrations and typographical execution. This second French edition is greatly superior to the first Amsterdam edition of 1720 (which was published in 12mo.) not only textually but for its beauty. According to Guerlac, it is the handsomest edition of the Opticks printed in Newton’s lifetime, or indeed later. This edition, quite rare, was edited by Pierre Varignon, and included changes proposed by de Moivre and authorized by Newton.

NUOVO LIBRO DI CARATTERI DIVERSI DE SCRITTURA FORMATA, E CORSIVA PERFETTA. AD USO PRATTICO E MODERNO . ED INTAGLIATTI DA DE BEREY IN PARIGGI

Reycends & Guibert, Torino 1722 - oblong folio. contemporary blue wrappers. 26 engraved leaves (of 28). Text in Italian. A manual by Italian writing master Pitois. One of a number of his works produced in Turin by Reycends Brothers and the book/mapseller firm Guibert. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Rome-Venice hegemony in penmanship was waning, due to growing French influence in calligraphy. This slant towards French taste is revealed in the "Moderno" of the title and the fact that most of the twenty-six leaves are marked as engraved in Paris by artist Claude-Auguste de Berey. From 1690 to 1730 de Berey, or Berey, engraved the plates for several well-known French works on calligraphy. All the firm's writing manuals printed at this time were engraved in Paris (Barker, p. 147). Two leaves lacking. Soiled, margins chipped, old fold at center. Marks in ink throughout.
